From the chair…
Great to have the 50th Far North Tour return to the Far North to celebrate this milestone. Good to have the turnout of numbers on it and pleasing to have 4 Far North couples taking part.
Having Neil and June Beckenham come to the celebrations and present the 50 year badge to me and Peter White’s 25 year badge, was a pleasure.
The trip to the Cape went well. I thought it would be fitting to take the 27 Chev on it, as it was my vintage car, 50 years ago, the only problem was…?
We are indebted to Ray Sanders, Whangarei branch chairman, for organising this tour to make it all a success.
Many thanks to all the helpers on the day shifting cars both out and in to the museum, setting up tables and decorating them, selling spare parts, parking cars, and of course making punch, providing nibbles and then the clean up afterwards.
I hear Dave wore out his hands washing dishes.
A great effort and once again, many thanks for all your help.
A good number turned out for the look in at Peter and Judy’s collection on Sunday. It’s very impressive display of trucks and cars. Many thanks to Judy for providing morning tea to everyone. It was very much appreciated.
Moving on to the Dunny Run and about a dozen of us turned up to the Jack Morgan Museum and as I am sure there will be other reports, I will not go further but thanks to Ray Saunders for organising the Whangarei end and Peter Lovatt for meeting us at the museum and for making sure everything was all right at the Hundertwasser end.
I was pleased to go through the complex, a nightmare to build and I was probably most impressed with the view from the very top, of the surrounding area and the top of the building itself.
He certainly was a way out guy.
As this is the last newsletter for 2022. I wish you all a Merry Christmas, happy motoring and hope to see you at our next meeting and/or the Christmas event. Take care. Win
Vintage Car Club of New ZealandTom & I arrived at the Northland VCC club rooms before 8am, anxious not to be late for our 9am start! Only to find everything
locked up . Our hosts for the day arrived soon after and we were given a bag of goodies, along with instructions for the days rally.
9-10 am the first cars headed out, with a quick tour of main street of Whangarei then out to Kamo.
From there we headed to the west on Pipiwai Road, then onto Kokopu Road. This is the are proposed for the relocation of Whangarei airport.
It was then on to SH15 heading north, where there were quite a few flooded paddocks and crops.
We took a left turn .5k, to the Wairua Falls which was a sight to behold!!
It was in full flood; we were all in awe. They reminded us of Niagara Falls, it was so fierce.
Our morning tea stop was at Parakao store and museum. They managed with coffee and eats in a record time and we were on our way again to Kaikohe, then around Lake Omapere to Okaihau for the lunch stop.
The local Lions did us proud, providing each of us with a plate full of food plus teas and coffees, which were much appreciated by all.
A few late comers had joined us by this time and all the cars lined both sides of the main street, which looked very impressive!
We came through Mangamuka village and turned right off SH1 at Iwitaua road.
Vintage Car Club of New Zealand From: Tom & Margaret DeverallIt was on through the forestry for 15 kms when we turned left onto Fern Flat road. That defies its name, as it’s anything but flat!!! And it was narrow and quite steep, winding its way down eventually to Taipa.
We would like to say a big thank to them all, their team work couldn’t be faulted.
Sunday morning dawned with perfect blue skies and we met in Awanui, with Peter & Judy Matthews for morning tea and a look at Peter’s amazing collection of vintage trucks and cars. We also were able to see their horses with new foals at foot.
What a great days outing it was and to my knowledge, everyone made it to their destinations.
The weather was perfect until we hit Doubtless Bay, alas the skies opened and we had several minutes of torrential rain.
That cooled us all off.
At the dinner, Winston celebrated his 50th year as a VCC member and received his badge and certificate from Neil Beckenham. Win was thanked for all his years of service to our Club.
Glenis continues, with their trip to the Cape with the tour on Sunday morning
It was with great enthusiasm that Winston, Norah and I set out from Matthews' Museum in his 1927 Chevrolet to join the Far North Rally to Cape Reinga.
As hosts for the evening meal in Matthews Museum, the Far North VCC Club, did a great job setting up for the meal for about 130 folks and cleaning up after it.
A lovely fine day encouraged us to leave the side curtains off to enjoy the scenery, so equipped with picnic baskets, weatherproof and warm clothing we set off to the first stop near Awanui at Peter Matthews' amazing collection of Classic vehicles.
Vintage Car Club of New ZealandAfter viewing his collection and enjoying a sumptuous morning tea we departed for the Cape, enjoying the wind in our hair, panoramic views, and our own well-being. However, it wasn't long before we were happy to don our all weather gear because the further north we travelled the cooler the wind became.
It was over a two hour drive north, travelling at a leisurely pace. The Chev performed admirably and we received a warm welcome from a group of bikies and other admirers when we reached our destination.
Yes, we made it to the Cape!
We then cruised on down the steep incline to the scenic Taupotupotu Beach to join
An hour later we said farewell to the group and set off back up the hill, but oh those corrugations!
With our capable driver's guidance 'she' (the Chev) negotiated the rough terrain and took us safely back to the sealed highway.
Feeling very satisfied with a near perfect run home we were suddenly jolted into an unbelievable situation!
We were south of Waiharara cruising along when there was a muffled expletive from the driver, and we came to an abrupt halt!
Win managed to coax the vehicle into the drain so as not to be a traffic hazard, as it could not have happened at a more inconvenient place. It was on an uphill bend with a double yellow line!
We had run out of petrol!
But how convenient, Norah was on the phone immediately to her daughter, who lives nearby and within 15 minutes she had arrived with a can of fuel.
Thank you Vicki for being in the right spot at the right time.
Mishap aside, all in all, it was a truly wonderful day's outing.

Another great day for the November gathering with many machines to enjoy.
The 1925 Chev snapped the Repco prize.

Vintage Car Club of New ZealandHello Club Members. Margaret and I send you all, Seasons Greetings from Rangiora. How the year has flown, 12 months since we left the Far North. We have been very lucky in having been able to host a few of our friends from the North as they passed through and we would welcome any members to contact us should you be travelling past us.
We follow the club's activities with interest and look forward to receiving the minutes of the meetings and the "Focus" every month.
Enjoy the festive season and hopefully some fine weather that you can all get out and about possibly with the hood down, for a few.
Kindest regards and safe motoring. Graeme Moore and Margaret Cornwall.
In the Focus this month we have photos contributed by: Glenis, Rosco, Claude, Margaret D & Marg I.
Reports, notices, & contributions from Win, Tom, Glenis, Margaret D x2 and Graeme & Margaret Thank you for taking the time to add to the interest of our Focus.
Thanks for sharing this recipe with us, Marg D. It seems to make sponge making, look very easy.
Beat 4 eggs and add 2/3 cup of sugar and 2/3 cup flour top up with a good tablespoon of cornflour. Stir the flour into the mixture with a fork before using the beater… it saves a mess!
Lastly add 2 tsp of BP and a knob of butter.
Bake at 180c for 20 minutes
Vintage Car Club of New ZealandWishing
The Dunny Run brought with it a very tidy day weatherwise, which was appreciated.
The Jack Morgan Museum, the first of our 2 visits, provided plenty of local history of the Hikurangi area, for us to take in.
If you haven’t been in, it is worth a visit.
And then it was onto the Hundertwasser Art Centre for the tour at 1 pm. Photos best describe it.
The top level is cleverly designed and the lift to it, had many of our engineering ‘club minds’ working.
