Editor’s Notes • We need to appoint some helpers to the Social Conveners positions, as the people in these positions were not in attendance at the AGM. • There also needs to be confirmation for the Journey Through Time Rally in October. • Also the cost of the meal for Club Captain’ tour Group on Thursday 22nd of September. The Ford Model Y If you ever wondered how Ford got to dominate Britain’s car market then meet the car that started it all. The Model Y That’s right: Henry Ford Model T is the subject of all the legends and the world wide acclaim. But from 1920,its British popularity took a pounding. The Draconian rules of the new Motor Car Act levied an annual tax of One pound on each RAC-rated horsepower ( as oppose to brake horsepower) Model T’s had large unstressed engines for covering vast American-style distances, and were rated by the RAC at 22hp. So the Model T utilitarian and cheap to buy, suddenly became costly to run. For the subsequent Model A Ford Came up with a rule-bending small –bore engine especially for Britain, cutting the tax from 22pounds a year to 15 pounds per year. But when the Depression hit in 1929,sales of this thristy and gutless Model A imploded anyway. Henry Ford hadhad 15 popular British small cars shipped to the USA in 1928 for his close examination, but he was relucant to build a car specifically to suit the United Kingdom. He finally relented but it wasn’t until October1931 that his Detroit staff began work on a proper rival, with the old boy himself helping to build the prototypes. Amazingly, just five months later the Model Y was unveiled in London. There was an all-new, and resolutely unadventurous, four cylinder engine of 933cc RAC- rated at 8hp, and all-new transverse-sprung chassis, and an elegant, practical four- seater saloon body. It looked good and drove well, thanks partly to being the first sub1-litre car with synchromesh gears. By August 1932 Model Ys were flowing down the production line at Ford’s newly erected Dagenham factory. The one hundred and twenty pound Model Y gave the Ford Motor Company instant dominance in the crucial 8hp market sector and alone saved the Essex-based enterprise from closure. It truly set
