Omaka Classic Car Museum

Club Captains Report I hope the weather will still be reasonably settled for the Roxburgh trip. Owen has gone to a lot of effort to organize this event and good fine days will make it a really great run. We had already organized a train trip to Blenheim to visit Omaka. Originally the air show, which was cancelled, so went to the open weekend instead. It was amazing, and we met up with a lot of people who, like us, used their weekend arrangements to see the static displays instead. So have to miss the Roxburgh trip. I believe the Wanaka weekend was a great success as well. If any members went, and took a few photos, forward to Barry for the Rolling Wheels The three passes and three gorges run.l am hoping we can do this on the 15th or 16th Of May. As it is getting late in the season if the weather is not conducive to travel through the area, we will wait until next year, rather than try for another day. Regards Suzanne.

Cars from the 50,s to the 70,s

Omaka Aviation Museum Over easter Suzanne and I were Blenheim and visited the aviation museum at Omaka and the adjoining classic car museum We recommend if you are in Blenheim visit these attractions. The aviation museum has 2 hangers one for WW1 and the other for WW2 aircraft. The highlight for us was seeing for the first time the mosquito aircraft on loan by the family of the late John Smith at Mapua and also the P40 Kitty hawk under restoration from John Smith also. Two of the aircraft recovered from John Smiths collection at Mapua a Mosquito and a P40 Kitty hawk

John Smith brought the aircraft in the 1950,s from Woodbourne in Blenheim , dismantled it by removing the engines and cutting of the wings which are ply wood and then towing it by his car to Mapua out of Nelson It took about 5 trips and being a carpenter he resembled it and kept it in a shed on his property.. He did manage to get a engine running in about 1970. Included in his collection were 2 Kittyhawk's, a mustang, a Hudson bomber numerous Harvard's and a treasure trove of parts , The aircraft were in amazing condition with a lot of their original equipment still on board.

Mosquito at John smith's prior to move to Omaka

New way of landing

Adjoining the aviation museum is the classic car museum featuring cars from the 50,s, 60,s 70.s well worth looking through.
