This month’s club meeting was a great success with around 100 people in attendance; this number included the visitors who gave us a wonderful insight and presentation into their electric cars and what the future has in store for us. Thanks to John White for organising this event. We really needed more time for it; unfortunately we had to cut it short to allow our meeting to proceed. The club also welcomed two new members Bryan and Denise Keen. The last few months have been extremely busy with all the car shows and rallies etc. These have been well attended and enjoyed by our members. They have given the public a great insight into the club and what we are about. It has been a little disappointing that the motor bikes have not joined us. At the Supercheap Auto Spectacular Graeme McKenzie was there displaying his magnificent BSA but why was he the only one there? These events are not just for cars but are for all club vehicles, so come along join in and show off your magnificent machines be proud and let the public know what the club is all about. The Swap Meet is on 14 March and there are still a few vacancies where help is needed on the gates, parking etc. Most of these slots are only for an hour at a time, they are easy and pleasant jobs with a great chance of meeting and greeting the public. So if you haven't volunteered already put your name forward now. Next the Easter Rally 10-13 April. An unbelievable amount of preparation and effort has gone into this event and it is probably the largest event that the club has ever organised. There will be cars attending from all over New Zealand. The success of this event needs your help so if you haven't done so already contact Colin Brooks, Mike Khull or myself. Help is needed for kitchen duties, stewards, referees, etc most of these positions will most probably only be for one or two hours at a time. Sadly and unfortunately Mark Gibson has decided that after 6 years as the Spark Editor he wants a break so will resign this position at the coming AGM. Mark will be hard to replace however we must realise that 6 years is a long time. He has done an excellent job and his retirement is well deserved. Mark has offered to assist and to show someone who would like to step into this position what and how it is done. With this kind gesture it would make it far easier for a new person to adapt to what needs to be done. Spark is a very important part of the club and needs to be kept going so if you can or know someone who is able to take it on please let Mark or myself know. The Saturday morning Working Bee was another well attended morning, l counted about 30 people there for morning tea. I don't say that they were all working but they were certainly there for the social side, that's what it is all about. Come along on the following Saturday morning after each club meeting, look like you are doing something and enjoy a friendly chat over morning tea! Hope to see you all at the Swap Meet. Cheers.

It has been great fun being the Editor and putting each month’s Spark together! I’m into my seventh year by the June AGM. I think that’s about enough. The time has come for someone else to put their mark on this important role within the club. I have found it is important, as many members don’t rely on email or the website and I know myself I refer to the printed copy all the time. This job gets you meeting members and learning about some of how the club ticks. Sending the finished item for posting on the website is as simple as an email. At the AGM I will stand down. I would like someone else to come forward and pick the role up. It’s time Spark received a tweak or two, some new impetus, even go back to basics and give it a freshen up. The choice will be up to you. So please come forward, you require a minimal amount of computer experience and you will learn more as you go. I did! Spark has been simplified for easy compilation and I will assist the new Editor to understand how the process works. It will not be dropped in your lap and left. I offer a Help Desk service, free of charge! The members are very good at volunteering material and there never seems to be a shortage. In my opinion this demonstrates their willingness to help and they obviously read it. A new Editor may wish to take Spark in a different direction, change the format and perhaps go paperless. The club may want a say first! It’s up to you. Have a go, commit to a year and then reconsider. I have accumulated so much detail now it is easy to determine what is included each month in preparation for the following months. The system works.

GENERAL BUSINESS: Swap Meet - Pete reminded members that this is the clubs main fund raiser and thanked all those who have volunteered for their support. Still need 5 people for gate and BBQ. Linda has asked for donations of scones/cakes etc. There will be a ladies planning meeting this Saturday. Set up 9.00am on the Friday.
Easter Rally- 86 entries. We need Marshals and helpers for the main rally, including 8 people for competitive section, 2 people for off-road section. On the Sunday at the Gymkhana will need members to keep public safe. Colin also mentioned how supportive the local business community has been. Please contact Colin to volunteer.
Hand Sanitisers are now around the club. Please use. Des/Don have fairy lights to go around veranda for Easter Rally. The new Garden Rubbish bins for green waste only. Absolutely no general waste. Mark Gibson will be stepping down as Spark Editor after 7 years at the AGM. Mark will mentor anyone wishing to keep the club informed. Please speak to Mark or Des. Callum is still following up Geoff Fox on the insurance valuation of the building for 2019. Super Cheap debrief was a lively meeting. Approx. $10,000 raised, 770 vehicles, traffic issues. We may be asked to be far more involved next year.

Brucie’s Burblings This last month has certainly been busy in the vintage car world aided by some good fine weather. No excuse to leave that car or bike in the shed collecting dust. The Foxton “Bears ‘n’ Cars” Waitangi day event was attended by about 10 cars from our branch and also the local hot rod club. This will be a fairly low key annual event hosted by the Foxton promotion group. All that attended had a picnic lunch then headed home about 2.30 pm. Some members went to Art Deco in Napier and also had a great time joining the Hawkes Bay Branch in most of their activities. A chance to live in a different era for a few days. We also attended and assisted at the Shannon Supercheap Car Spectacular and some members attended the British Car day. Look for a report in Spark. Coming up fast is the Swap Meet followed by the North Island Easter Rally which we are hosting and then two weeks later we are running the Ted Green Memorial Motorcycle run. If you can assist with any of these events and are not competing please let Des or myself know. Other upcoming events are listed in Spark.

Around 20 of us attended a great day out at the Teddy Bears Picnic on the Waitangi Day celebrations. I was kindly invited by George McLean so was able to travel there in style in George’s World War 2 American Marines, Willys Jeep. It proved to be a very fresh and exhilarating drive and a great way to travel and you certainly have to have your wits about you when driving on the roads! Good job George you know what you’re doing!
On arrival it was great to see a grand display of vehicles from several clubs and individuals from in and around the Manawatu area! We were met with quite a brisk breeze that brought life to the famous Foxton Dutch Windmill “de Molen!” “de Molen” translates to “the mill” in English! The De Molen project was started in 2002 to the cost of one million dollars. It all began when a Dutch man Dick van Till arrived in Foxton with the dream of opening a Tulip Farm in partnership with Jan Langem. The land reminded them of the Netherlands but unfortunately due to the unsuitable climate the project was canned and Mr van Till decided to go to Australia to pursue his dream. Mr Langem however decided to stay and fulfil the dream of building the windmill with the help of the Foxton community, Dutch
descendants and donations from the public. It is now run by volunteers under the management of The Foxton Windmill Trust Inc. a charitable society! The plans and specifications were all obtained from the Netherlands enabling de Molen to be an exact replica of a 17th century Dutch flourmill, apart from a few New Zealand building code conformities! It opened on 13th of April 2003! It is a fully working mill with a shop of Dutch treats made on the premises and is currently manned by volunteers. Back to the day! Everyone enjoyed their picnic lunches or the great food from many of the cafes that were all open on the day! Even the Teddies were having a great time sharing their picnics and especially the children with looks of delight as they perused the many Teddy bear displays! Later there was a prize for the best Teddy bear display and our member Bruce Lawrie won the event with his Ted who was driving his own vintage car with a bit of a tow from one of the full sized vintage cars. For his efforts he won one of Foxton’s special Fox Toys seen in the photo sitting next to Ted in his car!

Shannon Supercheap Auto Spectacular Car show! Well Bob and I got out of bed early and were on site at 7 am! Far too early for a Sunday morning but once the gazebos were up, the coffee went on and things came into focus. A big thank you to our people who turned up to help with the parking. As Mike K said, “It’s like herding cats!” They all parked where they felt like it anyway! The big glitch which I am assured will be sorted next time is the long line of cars waiting to get in. There was a real bottleneck on that narrow lane, some cars were overheating while idling. It wasn’t helped by a few folks who wanted to exit the show against the tide! In numbers, there were 1400 cars, mostly display cars, with 3000 members of the public. Quite a successful show, especially for a first effort! The weather Gods smiled and gave us a 29 degree day! A big plus was a lot more trees for shade than the old venue, and generally a fairly spacious area. Thanks again to all our members who put on a good ‘club’ showing, those blue banners do look good! Keep up the good work members and on to our own Swap Meet soon!
Mike Khull received this lovely piece of water colour art as a gift from a friend of his who is an artist in Foxton Beach. Mike was suitably chuffed and it now sits pride of place in his vast collection of his other trophies, photos and memorabilia in his lounge.

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run For those of us who had not explored Foxton before, the Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom museum, library, cafe and windmill complex on Main Street was a delightful surprise. Twenty five of us had arrived on a hot, sunny day to find that staff had arranged, not only for us to be guided around the Anne Frank exhibition, but also, to the rest of the museum as well. The whole complex was buzzing with activity: a community volunteer event and a school visit to the exhibition in the amazing building. What I personally found most fascinating about the Anne Frank 'Let me be Myself' display was the detailed depiction of the Frank premises and how the secret hiding place was created. It was bigger than I’d imagined but, on the other hand, it did have to accommodate eight people. An important part of the exhibition was the story of six of today's young people and their experience of identity, prejudice and discrimination. Anne died in Bergen-Belsen in 1945, probably of typhus. A copy of her diary is on display. This exhibition, brought here by the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand, provokes some deep thoughts and sadness about Anne's life and similar problems in today's world. Afterwards, members dispersed to the cafes on site. Hal and I also visited the windmill where goods were being winched up through a hatch in the ceiling. The ground level shop has all sorts of Dutch delights, liquorice, biscuits, cheeses, as well as the stone ground flour ground at the mill (which I just had to buy for my home made bread). A fabulous day out!

The Swap Meet is just around the corner. Spares will be open on the 7th (Working Bee), 10th (Wolseley Car Club visit), 13th (Swap Meet set up day) and the 14th being Swap Meet day. So if any members wish to purchase any late treasures get in quick. With the Ferguson Collection out of the way, we turn our attention to the late Jim Baird. Jim was well known to Horowhenua members, especially to Spares as Jim purchased the remains and later with a lot of hard work did the restoration of the 1916 Buick Colonial Coupe, which came from the Disher collection back in 2007. The word is that Jim’s collection will be auctioned off sometime within the next two or three months. Spares in conjunction with the library had a working bee on 15th February in which we carried on working through the scrap metal and getting ready for the Swap Meet. Safe travelling everyone.

FOR SALE 1929 GRAHAM PAIGE Sedan Deceased estate. 3128cc side valve six cylinder engine. Original mileage is 40,690. The vehicle was manufactured with four wheel hydraulic drum brakes. There is no sign of any rust or metal deterioration anywhere on the vehicle. All the original fittings and handles are in the vehicle. VTNZ Tester, Timaru "This would be the best original car I have ever tested". It has current WoF and is VIN’ed ready for registration, including the original black plates. Many more photos and video available on request. The vehicle is in its original condition, 90 years old, and has worn very well, having been in the one family from new to 1983 in South Canterbury. Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run (last Wednesday of the month)
Wednesday 25th March Visit to Gill and Brian Ward’s home at 12 midday 73 Rosetta Rd, Raumati South (aka 73 Hydes Rd) Gill and Brian have again kindly offered to host our summer barbeque lunch at their home. Members attending are encouraged to bring their club-eligible vehicles to add to the display of Brian's interesting cars and memorabilia. All lunch food will be provided but please bring a donation of $10.00 per person to contribute to the cost. Please also bring your favourite tipple. Directions: From the south, take the first expressway exit then left at the roundabout to Raumati South on to Poplar Avenue. At the end of Poplar Avenue, right into Rosetta Rd. Left into Hydes Rd, opposite Tiromoana Rd. From the north, take the old SH1 to turn right onto Raumati Rd by the Chocolate Factory. At the end of the road, turn left into Rosetta Rd. Drive down Rosetta and when you pass the Rosetta cafe on your right look for Hydes Rd on your right opposite Tiromoana Rd. Parking: If you bring your club vehicle, please park on the driveway which leads into the garage. If you’re in your modern, there should be ample parking in front of the house but if this is not available (due to wet weather) there is plenty more parking in Hydes Road.
