Welcome to the New Year 2019 has gone and 2020 has arrived, not only that but it’s almost February and only 11 months of this year left, so, we’d better make the best of it, will it be as exciting as the 1920’s? Probably won’t be roaring, there are noise abatement notices these days. Well what has been happening? I didn’t attend the New Year picnic or the visit to Racetech, but my wife and I did do a day trip to Wanganui on the Saturday of anniversary weekend. The day didn’t start well with my wife’s 5-month-old Mazda having a fit just past Porirua; A scraping noise then a severe vibration and more noise. We returned home, the noise was gone but there was a strong smell of burnt biscuits. It turned out to be a failed Air-con compressor.

Off again in my car for a great day in Wanganui. The trip home took us along the 3 Valleys Trail, a lovely relaxed cruise.

The following weekend I helped with marshalling on the Biennial Motorcycle Rally and then attended the dinner. The rally was a great success in the 30 degree plus sunshine of the Wairarapa, even travelling to the allocated checkpoint, I went on some roads that I have never been on before. Norm Willis and I were placed way out in Ngaumu Road with little shelter from the Sun. this was the midpoint of the regularity section of the rally, so bikes were parked up there for 15 minutes, good chance for us to see them. A good variety of bikes, some had travelled a long way to get there. I am sure Trevor will provide the details.

This is the second time I have attended the dinner and I would like to commend them on the organisation and running of the event and thank them for inviting me to attend the rally and Dinner.

Well how has the year been so far?

The New Year’s Day picnic at Queen Elizabeth Park was a pretty good day out, the park was nothing like as crowded as Kaitoke usually is, and with much the same facilities. I didn't get sunburnt either which is a bonus.

The Monte Carlo to Whanganui meant that several entrants got to see a few places they wouldn't usually go to or even know existed. How many of you know there is a capped oil well in the Wairarapa for example. Once again we welcomed our friends from Horowhenua along, and once again they beat us at our own game, but not by much this year.

Whanganui's Vintage Weekend seems to get better every year; plenty to do and see all around the city. While the Saturday car display was on Joanne and I went on a riverboat cruise aboard the Waimarie.

It’s a coal fired paddle steamer that was literally dredged up and restored back to life.

The car display filled the CBD section of Victoria Street with large crowds of people in attendance all day. Later in the afternoon we took part in the charity car cruise, there were probably 100 plus cars of all sorts that turned up. We took the long route. This took us out to Castlecliffe, Kai-iwi Beach and back to the city past Virginia Lake. In the evening Diane had organised a good meal at the St Johns Club near the motel most of us were staying at.

While most of the Wellington team took part in the Burma Rally on Sunday, we decided to make up our day as we went along, visiting a great pottery gallery we saw the evening before at Castlecliff, had a look around Bason Botanical Gardens, climbed the towers at Durie Hill and drove out to Fordell, amongst other places. I understand the Burma Rally was equally good, travelling almost to Patea. Yes. we have already rebooked our motel room for next year.

The Bi annual motorcycle rally was recently held attracting around 50 riders, the back roads of the Wairarapa were ideal for the event.

The next couple of months are also busy in the world of old cars, American Car Day, British Car Day, Twilight run, our fantastic Gymkhana and the North Island Easter Rally, so there should be something for everyone in that lot.

The Rally Team and I look forward to seeing you out and about in 2020 Neale.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

Over many years Martin Ferner developed a handicapping formula that he used at VCC motor sport events. Our Branch used these at events in the 1966 National Easter Rally and the Belmont Hill Climb. In 1967, they were used at the Maungatukutuku Hill Climb and at the Levin Motor Racing Circuit, in 1969.

This donation of Martin’s research and event records come to the archive via Club Captain Neale Ryder.

These are a valuable record of Branch events and so many thanks to Martin and Neale.

THE WHANGANUI VINTAGE WEEKEND and the WVCC Club Captain’s Monte Carlo Rally.

The Monte Carlo Rally from Wellington to Whanganui on the Friday before Wellington Anniversary Weekend is quite different from the average. Participants are given a list of pointcarrying towns to visit, around the lower North Island. The idea is to collect the most points between 8am and 5 pm with an hour off for lunch at Woodville. Photos of places visited with time as proof are all that are required. Sometimes the only other cars on the rally you see are at lunch and Whanganui.

It is great fun and you can make it as hard or as easy as you want depending on how much preparation time you have and/or the desire to win. But even the best preparation can be ruined by a wrong turning, road works, or hitting a cow on a bridge (as has happened to one participant).

A wrong turn happened to be our ruin this year. Too much reliance on maps from the navigator and the reluctance of the driver to turn around, contributed to us losing over half an hour between Peep’o’day (where the hell is that you may ask) and Ohingaiti. We had to cut out 4 towns losing two hundred points and any hope of a prize. I am thinking that next year we will make it a cruise from café to café and just enjoy the scenery. Prizes presented at the BBQ that night were unfortunately dominated by the Horowhenua VCC again this year, but it was a great day just the same. So that was the beginning of Old Blue’s run to Whanganui.

Saturday and an early rise to park our vehicles with other types of collectible vehicles in the main street. Many people, including some VCC members dressed in period costumes to add to the atmosphere, and there were several other activities, and some great bands throughout the day. A fantastic display, it is commendable for its free access to the public.

Having ensured our vehicles were safe, we found a café to have breakfast followed by a relaxing day. The main feature for us VCC members was the Burma Rally on Sunday.

The rally this year started at the Anzac Hall in Featherston. It went to Wainuioru where the riders started a regularity ride to Ngaumu Bridge and return. After lunch they headed towards Masterton before doubling back through Gladstone and Martinborough, to the Anzac Hall. There were two breakdowns; first was Simon and Sylvia Clearwater (From Whangarei, on their Matchless) while climbing the Remutaka Hill, to the start – primary chain failure.

They were rescued by Mac McLeod from Maidstone Yamaha, who loaned them the shop Scorpio to get back to their digs in Lower Hutt. Well done Mac! Peter Simpson supplied a replacement chain. The only breakdown on the run was the Bade BSA C10, which went onto their trailer so the backup team had an empty trailer at rally’s end.

The meeting gave a big vote of thanks to the marshals, backups, and morning tea ladies (Margaret Blair and Debbie Palmer) and special mention to Pauline Gwynn who organised and delivered the excellent lunches – there were many compliments on the lunches. Also a special thanks to Tasi for the dinner table decoration and nibbles – far classier than motorcyclists expect and greatly appreciated. Thanks to John Appel who suggested the route.

Coming Events: British and European Car Day 9th February: 10am to 4pm. Trentham Memorial Park. BSA Club will be there with the Shelter. All British and European bikes welcome-$10 towards Wellington Free Ambulance.

Thirty four VCC members from Wellington, Horowhenua and Manawatu branches gathered at the Winemaker’s Daughter restaurant for Christmas lunch. The weather was brilliant and tables had been set up for us under a glorious pink bougainvillea and clematis. After tasty nibbles had circulated we all sat down for roast pork, chicken, ham, fish pie and vegetables, followed by a selection of desserts. Good company, lots of chatter, a lovely setting and a great menu; what more could one want. I, for one, did not need to cook dinner!

JANUARY CLUB NIGHT This month, we visited Racetech in Seaview, instead of having a regular club night, as it was a chance to see the manufacture of racing seats from start to finish.

We were met by the owner of Racetech, David Black, who has spent many years in motor racing, starting in his early 20’s and moving on to rallying in the mid 80’s. In 1998, David bought a company in Christchurch, moved all the stock and equipment up here and started making his own seats for motorsport.

During a trip to Indianapolis in 2001, for the launch of the Dodge Viper, David learned that Dodge couldn't find seats safe enough for their customers and he came back and made some seats which were considered safe after rigorous testing by the FIA. Later, in 2012, Racetech USA was formed and 2 years later, Racetech Europe. In between those years, the factory in the Hutt was destroyed by fire, including all the moulds. Luckily some seats were salvaged from the showroom and new moulds were able to be made after the current premises were found. Racetech now make seats for Porsche RSR and GT3R, Aston Martin and McLaren GT3 cars. Production is very technology-based and involves robots to trim the seat moulds, and a computer generated cutter for the coverings, increasing productivity markedly. Thank you David, for showing us the ‘Hi tech’ world of racing seat manufacture.

London to Brighton Veteran Car Rally. Elisabeth and Fred Smits.

In 2013, when planning for our “Tour Around the World in a 1957 Mercedes-Benz”, the London to Brighton Veteran Car Rally was one of our “must see” rallies. It was on the 14th of November 1896, that this rally was held for the first time, to celebrate the cancellation of the Locomotive Act, which limited the maximum speed of vehicles to 4 miles per hour.

That year, 43 cars participated, of which 15 arrived in Brighton. Since then the rally has been organised almost every year for vehicles built before 1905, and is by far the largest veteran car event in the world.

We attended the 2019 rally, which was held on 3 November, as always, traditionally the first Sunday of November. At 5.30am we arrived at Hyde Park to ensure we were able to see the start at sunrise (6.46am). By seven o’clock over 400 veteran cars, motorbikes and a few bicycles were on their way aiming to complete the 59 mile route before darkness at around 4pm.

We followed the route from London through local towns, villages and the beautiful English countryside, to the finish in Brighton, admiring the cars for their beauty and capabilities despite their basic technologies. We loved to see the enthusiasm of the passengers sitting very exposed in the cold and rain, and having to dismount regularly to push their vehicles uphill or off the road. We admired the perseverance of the drivers in keeping their cars going; many broke down. We saw over 100 cars that had stopped for maintenance and repairs but only a few did not make it to the finish in Brighton.

The attached pictures tell the story of the day – please follow that story which we hope will give you a glimpse of one of the most fantastic days of our visit to the UK – we just loved every minute of it.

Well, WE did love every minute of it, but Abel did not! At the end he threw one of his (many) tantrums. He had heard that every veteran vehicle that finished the London to Brighton Veteran Run was given a badge. He insisted he was entitled to such a badge since he had completed the route and was also a veteran car – not necessarily a veteran car in age but a veteran road warrior; he shouted that he had driven many more miles than any of those other old buggers! Fortunately, we had been issued with “participant” tags that allowed us to enter the areas restricted to rally participants. When Fred gave Abel one of those he settled down a little. At times Abel is such a childish grump!

Drama aplenty en-route to the Targa NZ Matrimonial Award If the goal of the VCC Targa Time Trial was to attract new members to the Club, then it served its purpose. Duly signed up, we entered the five-day Targa NZ, and began to prepare our MGA. Come October, the car was set; however for the first stage of day one, we were not. Amid the excitement and pressure of our very first Targa stage, we mixed up the time and speed read-outs of the supplied RallySafe equipment, which resulted in us being 90 seconds adrift of the target time. The disappointment within the MGA cabin was palpable. At that point in time, the driver-navigator relationship was at low ebb, with any prospect of matrimonial award honours being bestowed upon us, considered low.

Quickly recalibrating ourselves for stage 2, we found our rhythm. By stage 5 we were on a roll, revelling in a prolonged period of winding roads that meant we could drive as fast as possible, without danger of breaching the stage’s cumulative average speed. Our passage of driving nirvana ended when a series of pot-holes unsettled the car, causing a coil connection to separate. Result: DNF for that stage, and DNS for the following stage.

Day One concluded with us positioned well to the rear of the field, though we felt that we could be competitive. By the end of Day Two, we were fifth, despite the starter motor failing. By tapping into the MG Club network we found a local workshop that could recondition the faulty item.

On Day Three, we threw a fan-belt while driving between stages. We were towed by an obliging competitor in a 4WD, even though they were under time-pressure to get to the next stage. Being towed at speeds of up to 100km per hour on a short tow-rope in a car with drum-brakes while having no visibility of the upcoming road, required maximum focus.

We were unable to get the car fixed for the next stage, but managed to end Day Three retaining fifth place.

Sadly, we didn’t make the start of the first stage of Day Four, due to the seal in the oil filter rupturing, as a result of the oil filter having to be removed to get the starter-motor out, then removed again to get the reconditioned starter-motor back in. A tow behind our support vehicle through Fields Track to Taihape ensued. We were back on the road midafternoon, having missed five stages (of six) for the day. The final stage of Day Four went particularly well, which helped arrest our freefall in the rally placements. For Day Five, we started in ninth and finished in seventh, following a good run across all six stages. We were recipients of the Matrimonial Award, for the highest placed couple.

I was regaling a friend over lunch about the trials and tribulations of our Targa experience.

“It sounds a terrible time” they said; “no” I replied. “It was fantastic!”

————————————————————————————————————————Over 80 vehicles set off at one minute intervals from Motua Gardens, up the river then North West. We followed roads that wound around hills and valleys through the beautiful countryside. Lunch was in the school grounds at Whenuakura near Patea, then we wound our way back towards Whanganui, nearly touching the coast at Kai Iwi Beach. From there we followed a flattish back road on the South West side, almost to Castlecliff and up the riverside to finish at the VCC rooms. It made me think that we VCC members are incredibly lucky because we see so much of back country New Zealand on these rallies.

The weekend ended for us at a semi-formal dinner and prize giving. We were beginning to think that only Whanganui members had the local knowledge (or something) to win but right near the end Old Blue was announced as the winner of the Commercial section. Bruce and I went up to collect our prize cheered by the members of Horowhenua and Wellington Branches.

This great weekend is rapidly overtaking Napier’s Art Deco, for the participation by a large range of people and activities. It is very relaxing, less restrictive, and inexpensive.

The race season is well underway and we are looking towards a summer of excitement.

Following the article in Beaded Wheels (Written by Phil Pearce not me) we have had several enquiries from people wanting to come and join us.

As a reminder, all Pre December 1960 cars are eligible (with only period modifications allowed) or “continuation” models whereby the specification was not changed from December 1960 (eg 850cc minis are OK, 1275 Coopers are not !) The vehicles must have either a VCC VIC or an MSNZ COD for the correct year represented. We also accept both MSNZ and VCC Race licences. If you have any queries regarding the eligibility of your vehicle, please read the VCC Branch Manual Section 23 Appendix G, and if you are still confused, please contact me.

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run (last Wednesday of the month)

26th February 2020 Visit to Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom, 92 Main Street, Foxton Anne Frank 'Let me be myself' Exhibition The Museum is on Main St Foxton, right next to the windmill. Provision is made for a car display out in front of the Museum. Entrance to the exhibition: $5.

Meet at the museum at 10am for the guided tour: Roderick Kinghorn has organised this month’s outing and he says “Foxton as you have never seen it before. This is an opportunity for a pleasant day out. Bring your neo-classic vehicle, polish it and invite your friends to join you in your vehicle and others too who usually attend our outings to share with you your passion of what it is to be a part of the Motoring Spirit.

The museum, multi complex of local, Dutch, Maori and Exhibition Gallery featuring Anne Frank each displayed a meaningful story which I have not previously experienced within a museum setting. This complex display was put together with sensitivity and meaning. In discussion with the Museum complex people we are hopeful of having a guide, also for the windmill and wood carving building.”

The diary of Anne Frank captures the real-life story of a young girl in hiding from the Nazis in an attic in Amsterdam, during World War II. The dynamic and interactive exhibition created by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam has already visited 80 countries, and been seen by over 10 million people globally. It arrived in New Zealand in 2018 and opened at the Auckland War Memorial Museum in January where it engaged over 35,000 visitors in just three short months. Using a combination of excerpts from Anne Frank’s famous diary, historical artefacts, pictures, video and testimony, the exhibition walks you through the life of the Frank family and the history of the era. It also engages visitors in a discussion about how the same themes affect our modern world.

Coffee and/or lunch can be taken at your leisure within the complex where Millside Café offers refreshment including light meals. Next door is the Dutch Oven Café for a more substantial meal (cabinet food only after 2.30pm).
