Greetings Members

FROM THE EDITORS DESK

Greetings Members and welcome to this October edition.

Wasn’t the unveiling of the plaque on the parts shed a moving occasion and especially for the late Eds lovely wife, Hinemoa. Please see more in this edition.

Also, as promised, Shane and Noeline Hobman open their garage doors and give us an insight over their love for VCC eligible vehicles and their race cars. Next month Peter Powell showcases Sunbeams.

I would like to give readers an insight over recent motoring events that I have had the pleasure in attending over the last month.

Firstly with the Military Vehicle Cub. Shane Whittaker, our VCC club member Dale Whittaker’s son, led a band of Military Vehicle Club members on an excursion ending up at a steam tractor collectors site in the outskirts of Feilding. What a dedicated group these steam people are! On the way we firstly visited VCC member Tom Clouston’s car and memorabilia collection in Turakina. Absolutely out of this world! Tom has agreed for me to do an article about his inspiring collection in a future RIVET. We also visited the Rush automotive collection in Feilding. Brilliant. It makes quite a sight to see us “military men” travelling on convoy like a platoon of soldiers going into battle! Ukraine, here we come! Then we had the Sunbeam Club 50 year anniversary Race 4 Life run from Cape Reinga to the Bluff. Our VCC Branch Auditor and member, Peter Powell, came with me in my Imp to join the group last Monday in a day trip to Hawera to visit three car collections. I replaced my hearing aids with ear plugs to reduce noise in the harsh riding hot Imp, which sounds like a deranged screaming lunatic on the open road. Peter, like me, is also a little deaf so conversation was rather difficult. Cardonal Classics Ltd, in the centre of Hawera, has 25 30 mint 1970s-80s classics, mainly English with a splattering of Australian and European models. Incredible. Proprietor Don buys and sells selected vehicles from the site. But his pride and joy, P76 Leyland's, are definitely not for sale. We followed South Road out of Hawera to view a 13 car Studebaker collection, some restored, plus dozens of mainly British classic bikes in an old Dairy factory. Amazing.

Before squeezing into the noisy Imp to join other Sunbeamers back to their Marton overnight base, we viewed a massive collection of unrestored cars housed in several adjoining buildings in the heart of Hawera. Never seen so many cars all jammed in. Looked a little like Horopito, but all under cover. Well over a hundred cars, perhaps two hundred, but impossible to count them. Unbelievable. No photographs permitted though.

There were a hardy few among the Sunbeam group who were to travel around the South Island after this. Too far for me though, especially in the race tuned Imp. Donations were being collected for Race 4 Life, a charity fulfilling the wishes of palliative care patients. Such a worthy cause. Safe travels and trust that other Sunbeams will join in as you travel south.

Incredible to come across all of these sheds full of cars from yesteryear. Some looked like complete wrecks while others were like new. I was politely told that they were all waiting to be restored. I hope that the proprietors live for a considerable time in order to achieve this. Good luck. That’s all for now. Yours in cruising Editor Ian

Chairman's Report

October 2022

Greetings Members

It is very interesting that if you drive around in your vintage car, folk seem to come out of everywhere to tell you about how:-

They were conceived in the same model car!

Some relative drove one for years

They have one in the back shed and do you want to buy it?

Well our last speaker wasn’t one of the above but does enjoy driving her Dad’s bright red 1966 Sunbeam Alpine Sports. We have become friends since we moved back to Marton 4 years ago as the family own the only Shoe Shop in New Zealand where my wife, Sue, can go and buy shoes which actually fit and are comfortable. Nicola Stevens gave us a short history of the business and who they cater for. If you missed her don’t fret as I believe the family are going to become members as she now lives in Wanganui but works in Marton. Those that saw the boot she brought in were absolutely amazed at the sheer scale of it, and that is actually for a customer.

I want to remind folk that the first three carparks by the door should be reserved for those of us that would normally use the disability parks in town. At this time of year trying to move walkers or use walking aids on our soft grass is definitely more difficult.

Bill James has done some sterling work on researching the correct colours and processes to carry out the necessary repairs to our Clubrooms.

Neil Farrer and Andrew Johnson are working on a replacement water heating system that is both economic and theft proof after two gas bottles in one year have been stolen from the club.

Club Captain’s report

Greetings members

October 2022

Our shinny parts auction was a huge success with a good final total. Thanks to everyone who helped, donated and bought lots of goodies.

My Club Captains run (18th September) was very well supported with 28 cars and crews. It was great to see so many of the older cars.

After the run we had a small ceremony to formally name our parts shed after Ed Boyd. Ed was a driving force behind so many club achievements. The current committee felt it was an honour to acknowledge him. It was wonderful to have Hinemoa continue her contact with the club and be with us for that special occasion. I know we will remember Ed fondly as we visit the Ed Boyd Parts Shed to hunt for allusive treasures.

Our October club night featured a very impressive guest Nicola Stevens talking about her family shoe business. In spite of strong overseas completion, it is great to see a driven family carving out a niche for local business. Thanks Nicola, it was very interesting having you speak to us.

Sunday the 16th is our regular club run finishing with afternoon tea at the clubrooms.

October is Heritage Month and is going to be a very busy month. We have committed to support several events over Labour weekend

Firstly the Heritage parade for pre 1950 cars on Saturday and the Heritage Display at the Racecourse on Sunday for all or vehicles. Also on Sunday we will be displaying vehicles at the Whanganui Heritage Collectors Fair at the Jubilee Stadium.

Please see our Club Calendar for more details.

If that wasn’t enough we are also displaying at the Whangaehu School 150th Reunion. Chairman Andrew has organised Marton vehicles to cover this. If you have a desire to join this group please contact Andrew D. I’m sure he would love to hear from you.

What’s new and what’s nice in Whanganui

After a trip down some of my favourite Wanganui East streets, it was over the town bridge, up Drews Ave, past the Sarjeant Art gallery then on to Fitzherbert Ave extension and a few new nearby streets. I included Bamber St as the original plan was for the extension to go all way to the top of Bamber St. A chance then to admire Rangiora St and then the new large factories in Mill Rd. Another drive through Fitzherbert Ave, Springvale, St Johns Hill, the Avenue and back to the clubrooms via our much loved Kowhai Park for afternoon tea. I would like to see a run every spring to celebrate the end of winter and get the older cars out.

Our Ed. Never forgotten

Ed Boyd was an extraordinary man who did so much for the VCC movement and our Branch in particular. To the extent he was awarded the John L Goddard award for services to the VCC. He was in his 50th year of VCC membership when he was sadly taken from us.

Frances and I joined the VCC in 2010. It was Ed who made us particularly welcome and instructed us on various points on our first rally. He had our cars valued for insurance purposes. Courtesies such as these do stay with you.

Ed’s forte or superpower was in fundraising and delegation as far as our Branch was concerned. I am relating this article mainly to his input into the Parts Shed. Neil informed me that when the Branch moved to the present location, there was no building in which to store and sell parts. Enter our Ed. Interest bearing bonds were initiated where members loaned whatever they wished to the Branch in order to quick start the necessary capital to commence building the new shed. Some $50,000 was required. Ed approached various institutions and businesses for financial assistance, along with holding raffles. Neil informed me that it took less than three years to pay back the bond holders.

All very well having a new building but nothing or very little to put in it. Ed contributed heavily here. During this period he was purchasing cars for his and Hinemoa’s Autobarn. He was always on the look out for spare parts which found their way onto the Parts Shed shelves.

Ed initiated a scrap collection ( now GOME) to assist in funding the new shed and the contents. $41,000 from scrap alone made a huge contribution and enabled Members bonds to be paid back to them.

Obviously not one individual can take credit for our well equipped Parts Shed, but it does take one individual to get the ball rolling.

That individual was Ed Boyd.

VCC Rubber Duckie Motorcycle Rally

Recently Heather and I travelled to New Plymouth for the Rubber Duckie VCC Motorcycle Rally and although we were unable to ride owing to my injured arm we helped and really enjoyed meeting all the other riders. Here are some of the motor bikes at the lunch break.

VCC AGM and Executive meetings in Auckland

I drove up in the Vanguard Estate, picking up Andrew and Sue Dittmer in Hamilton. All told I covered 660 miles Comfortable in the Vanguard and petrol consumption averaged 28 MPG which I thought was ok.

EXECUTIVE meeting – Friday evening and on Saturday after the AGM

1. Matters arising from last Minutes Hawkes Bay proposal for name change not required

Address Labels for some of the mail outs had been in Full names now corrected

Heritage & Classic problems with the definition withdrawn - Executive Zoom Meeting generally members felt that a lot was achieved with minimal disruption and travel. This may happen again from time to time.

2. Membership Status Wanganui Branch now has 165 Members plus 71 Joint members = 236. Overall membership is fairly constant with new members covering resignation and deaths. Overall membership of VCC is 8529 members.

3. ON line membership joining - further refinements but overall is working well. Some problems with Branches not reacting quickly enough to welcome new members. It is important that each Branch quickly make contact with a new on line member and welcome him or her to a branch meeting. There is an increasing number of applications each month. We have received a number for our Branch.

4. BUDGET VCC for 2023 24. Budget was accepted no change proposed to subs. Beaded wheels are assigned $17 from VCC sub towards Beaded Wheels production. This may not be enough as prices of paper, postage and production are rapidly increasing. The Vero share on income for last year was a welcome surprise almost double the usual amount.

5. Calendar of events chart was tabled for 2023 and beyond. Branches had the opportunity to correct or add events.. In our case Gumboot, Burma , Motor Cycle, and Annual Rally dates were already recorded.

6. NZTA. There is ongoing discussion on registration and especially 12 months WOF. It is a lengthy process , especially with Govt staff changes and Covid. It is likely that vehicle over 40 years may receive approval for 12 months WOF provided they have a VIC.

7. NZTA as part of the request for 12 months WOF gave Management accident reports from 2000 to 2018. Of those less than 2% were VCC Club members vehicles which helps our requests. It was a large task to search through our database to identify members cars but the VIC system (which is now 14608) plus the total vehicles of 26543 enabled Management to comprehensively respond to NZTA. However our older drivers are at risk in an accident as the reports show that persons over 60 have a higher rate of serious accidents or death.

8. Incorporated Society – Constitution Changes. Research is being done for VCC main constitution and recommendations for Branches. There will be a number of changes required under the new Act. We will get further advice in due course.

VCC AGM and Executive meetings in Auckland continued

9. National Office Systems the new software has enhanced many uses and facilities. The 50yr and 60yr are now on line with the 25 & 35 year awards. Previously there were 12 types of certificates new style only one to cover all situations. There have been many changes and the Branch Manual needs extensive revision a work in progress. There is provision for Branch Secretaries to download extensive information on their members for mail outs etc. It may be possible for Branch Secretaries to update Address , phone , and email details in the future. This is a problem within our Branch where many of the phone numbers are incorrect.

10. VCC Facebook. The usage is growing now 4192 members are using it. I rarely get onto this site but other members spoke on the VCC site and our own Branch Facebook site.

11. Promotion. There will be a new VCC Banner provided to Branches , likely this week. We were handed out new pamphlets so as to have them for Daffodil Day runs etc.

12. Vero International Festival. Management have asked for indications from any Branch seeking to organise the next international Rally. It should go to the South Island but will depend on applications received. President Diane stated that it is difficult to ask Vero for grants etc for National Rallies when we do not have the next large festival rally staring to organise.

13. Meeting closed AT 9.30pm – resuming after the AGM.

14. Meeting resumed Saturday afternoon after the AGM

15. Strategic Plan. 5 years ago a plan was presented some of the issues have been addressed. We split into working groups to discuss

(a) Does your Branch have a dedicated publicity/marketing person to help publicise events and market your branch and if so , what are some of the things they do to enhance the Club’s public image and awareness.

(b) How does you Branch build and maintain relationships with other similar groups or clubs

(c) Does your Branch appoint someone to specifically look after new members and what do you do to welcome them and retain their membership.

(d) How does your Branch encourage the interest and engagement of current and potential members.

(e) What non-formal gatherings does your ranch hold, such as car and coffee mornings, café runs, mid week runs etc. There were five tables and each group had 5 minutes to write down answers- then the question passed to the next table for ticking or adding new ideas. At the end all sheets were gathered in and we will see a report in due course. This is called Brain Storming !!!.

16. Voting on the logo - which was lost concern expressed that Management Members had equal votes to Branch delegates. Considerable discussion on this point.

17. P80 suggestion that this be capped at 2000. To be discussed.

18. 100 year old cars event - not a veteran or vintage as many vintage vehicles are now 100 years old. Nothing to prevent any Branch from holding such an event but Nationally there is nothing at present.

VCC AGM and Executive meeting in Auckland continued

19. Taranaki Branch sought payment of expenses from the Festival Committee This was not accepted by the meeting.

20. Insurance Waiver current VCC policy cover all VCC events from third party damages. But what about other non members participating. Provided these people have signed an acceptance of rally rules etc they will be covered. Tony Haycock will provide suitable wording for Branches to use.

Meeting closed at 4.08pm

VCC AGM Saturday.

It was disappointing that Auckland members did not come in their vintage vehicles. I counted only 8 in the car parks.

1. NZTA Meetings the working group have been talking about 12 month WOF, Heavy old vehicles, and lighting endorsements Harry Dynhoven (former MP) has been very helpful in discussions as he has been representing FMOC. NZTA compliance regarding registering back into the system of restored older vehicles is still a major issue.

2. Vero Insurance. Concern was expressed that members may not realise that if they cancel their membership that the Vero policies that they held with the VCC Benefits etc will be cancelled this could be expensive for replacement policies.

3. Election of Officers No election was required as only the required number of people stood. There is a vacancy for Secretary and Management will co opt someone for this role.

4. Correspondence Andrew Anderson had expressed his concerns over the editor of Beaded Wheels supplying articles and possibly jumping ahead of others. However in nearly all cases the Editor had supplied new stories when there was insufficient material. This is a reminder to members to write stories about their vehicles or some aspect of VCC. Contributions to Beaded Wheels are always sought.

5. NZTA Report. One area of concern is the lighting endorsement required for some older vehicles A new requirement has been issued where a WOF inspector may require special information on exhaust emissions. Also a new lighting endorsement will be required if the rear licence plate is not sufficiently illuminated. Some Veteran & Vintage vehicles may need a special endorsement on their VIC .

6. North Island Club Captain report – Forthcoming tour will cover 5 branches. For our Branch there will be close liaison between the 6th National Commercial Rally committee and Karen Smylie. It is possible that we may receive some funding from Vero allocation.

7. South Island Club Captain report South Island activities continue one highlight was the National Veteran Rally in Central Otago but covid restrictions did impact on the event.

VCC and AGM Executive meetings in Auckland continued

8. Andrew Anderson Speech - This year his theme was how to increase membership , and what about a North South tour? Possibly similar to the event run by Paul Collins in 2019 which I enjoyed. Members could come and go during the event or do the whole tour. It could be a stimulus for newer members.

9. Beaded Wheels report cost increases are a concern. National events are free advertising, and swap meets. There is a discount rate for members advertising. Currently a production run is 10000 copies.

10. Cancer Run this August Most branches are well prepared. Some asked if the VCC Membership should now consider an alternative cause. This will be debated at the March executive meeting.

11. President Awards –

John L Goddard award - granted to Rod & Ann Corbett for their work over the 5 years promotion of VCC vehicles in the Targa Rally.

Rod Brayshaw is standing down from his role with VIC and NZTA committee work due to health but will continue as an advisor. Presented with a special award.

Chris Leith is standing down - He was presented with an award thanking him for his dedication and service over 5 years.

12. Special report on changes in the database software, facilitating staff workload some points will take some time for Branches to get to grips with.

13. Next AGM to be held in Nelson August 2023.

14. Marlborough Branch have a special commemorative book on their history $40.00

15. Barry Birchall has produced a book “ The Early Years of the Motor Vehicle in Auckland”. This apparently covers motoring stories further afield than Auckland when the roads were almost non existent and vehicles between 1905 and 1915 had to contend with unformed roads and lots of mud even in Auckland City. Books available at $40 plus $10 postage. I have ordered a copy that will eventually end up in our library.

AGM closed

Thanks to Neil and Chairman Andrew for representing our Branch. Sounds like it was a heavy couple of days!

Presenting

The Hobman’s Collection

This month I have great pleasure in showcasing Shane and Noeline’s fine collection. Shane is also a very keen circuit racer. I was really surprised that he also has speedway and stock cars. Amazing the cars that people have tucked away behind their garage doors. I get a real buzz out of seeing these, as I hope members enjoy reading this column. Shane, as you would be aware, assists Members with obtaining their VIC certification. They are a great couple and much valued members of the VCC. Without further ado, here is Shane and Noeline’s story about their joining the VCC and our Branch, plus what is lurking behind their garage doors

Editor Ian

Shane has been interested in cars since his early teens much to the worry he caused his Mum. Noeline was also brought up around cars with her father and 2 older brothers being into cars. We have done international rallies, the first being Christchurch with our 38 Chevrolet Sedan travelling with Graham & June Mock in their 1938 Chevrolet Sedan and then we went to Hamilton with the 1955 Chevrolet Sedan and Graham & June took their 1923 Durant. We also went to Art Deco with Graham & June in their Durant.

After we bought the 38 Chev Sedan, Shane joined Taupo branch on 22 June 1992 because he had the support of Graham & June Mock up there. Noeline joined Taupo branch on 20 April 1996 and transferred both memberships to Wanganui branch on 14 June 1996.

Currently we have in our collection of cars the following VCC eligible 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air 4 Door, 1928 Chevrolet Roadster, 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air 2 Door post, 1990 Toyota Coaster, plus soon to be eligible, in 2 years time, a 1994 Holden Commodore Acclaim that Noeline’s father bought new. The Roadster was a full restoration job, we bought it as a kitset in Christchurch and when we got it home we put most of it together on the trailer. Noeline’s parents called in about a month later, on their way the Christchurch, and took photos to show the cousins that it was more than a trailer load of parts. The 1957 Bel Air is in original condition and the 1962 Bel Air was fully restored when we bought it.

We have owned in the past 2 x 1956 Chevrolet Bel Airs, 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air, 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air, 1961 Chevrolet Bel Air, 1938 Chevrolet Sedan, 1937 Chevrolet Sedan, 1939 Chevrolet Truck, 1990 Chevrolet Corvette LHD, 1963 International Truck, 1979 Holden Sunbird SL/E, 1976 Dodge Maxi wagon, 1980 Holden Sunbird Hatchback, 1983 Chevrolet Camaro, 1980 Holden Statesman, 1963 Holden Sedan, 1961 Pontiac, 1978 Chevrolet El Camino, 1977 Chevrolet Monza, 1978 Chevrolet Monza, 1975 Chevrolet Monza, 1983 Holden WB Ute, 1952 Ford Twin Spinner.

Shane currently has as circuit race cars, a 1964 Holden EH Sedan, 1963 Holden EJ Sedan and a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe. Also a restored Speedway MK3 Ford Cortina 2 Door and an A Grade Stockcar 16V. He also built in 1992, a standard stockcar that is here in town and races as a classic stockcar.

When the Branch moved into the current clubrooms, we helped with alterations and supplying morning tea for many weekends. Shane was one of the parts custodians with the late Len Browell at the new clubrooms. Noeline and Shane.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor

Re Ed Boyd Parts Shed

Ed would have been humbled and chuffed that the Parts Shed has his name on it.

And in reflection it’s a bigger gesture than just on the face of it, Ed’s name will be seen by every car that enters our local branch.

It’s a huge nod to Ed’s contribution from our branch and I would like to pass on my thanks and appreciation from myself and Ed’s family. Thanks to the members who organised this, it’s such a lovely gesture.

And I want to acknowledge some of the guys Ed delegated to help him along the way on his fundraising projects over the years, he had quite a bit of help from his friends. The likes of Allan Osman, Allan Ashwin, Ray Alderton, Don Simpson, Ron Zander, Dick Mottram, Ian Chamberlain and Neil Farrer.

All the best
