Chairman’s Report
Neil Chave Chairman’s Report – June 2019 In May the AGM was held and as there were no nominations for the positions of Chairman, Club Captain or Secretary, the current members have agreed to stay on in these positions to ensure the club functions over the next 12 months. We are pleased to see we had 3 nominations for the committee and we welcome Trish Jefferies, Murray Stanley, and Marty Sutherland to the committee. This will mean we have a full and effective complement of members on our committee, and the workload can be shared around. As mentioned during the AGM the club will need to continue to build up the cash reserves to ensure we can meet both our current and future obligations on maintaining our club rooms and keeping our costs to an acceptable level. The new committee will also look again at reinstating the club night roster, so all members get a chance to provide some direct input into club activities. My report to the AGM has already been circulated to all members. We held the Navigation Run on Sunday 19th May, and this was very well attended, and we welcomed our news members Dan & Judy Millar with their Essex Terraplane. More in detail on this run and who was the winner in Tony’s report. June will be a busy month with the annual Brass Monkey run this year set by Joe & Beryl Ridley. Also, the Mid Winter Pot Luck Dinner is scheduled for Saturday 8th June and is usually one of the most popular clubs nights for the year. Neil

Club Captain’s Report
Tony Mannington Club Captain’s Report – June 2019 It was a great turn out to our May AGM but looks like Neil and I are saddled for another year. Thanks to everyone for the support and we will do our best to keep things running smoothly. Welcome to our new committee members, Murray, Trish, and Marty, and we look forward to working with you. Also, thanks to the existing committee that have stayed on. My special thanks to Kelvin, who has stepped down. Kelvin has put a lot into the committee over a number of years, specifically helping me out with the 2019 Rally and plotting a great Navigators Run last year. Thank you Kelvin. Sunday the 19th our Navigators Run was run, thanks to Jocelyn and Norman who were given the task of setting this years run. All was well until we received a phone call on the Thursday prior to the run, telling us that Norman was in Rotorua Hospital. Norman was also hosting the Federation of Motoring, AGM at our Clubrooms the same weekend, so there was a lot of effort required to fill his shoes. The team of Neil, Chris, Tony, and JUNE 2019

Pam swung into action to help out Jocelyn. Ray and Shona also helped Jocelyn with lunches for the delegates to the Federation of Motoring AGM. Fortunately, Norman recovered sufficiently to be able to be discharged late Saturday afternoon, so was still able to attend the Federation of Motoring AGM on the Sunday. Again a great turn out of members for the Navigators Run, some 15 cars including a couple of moderns. Great to see new members Dan and Judy in their Essex Terraplane taking part in our Club Run. The route was plotted solely as Straight Line navigation, with questions Marilyn and Bill Dawson. along the way. The run was set in our beautiful Country Roads, and we ended up at the Kinloch Golf Country Club Cafe for afternoon tea. The Questions set for the run were a little challenging for our markers, so we decided to put the top 5 into the hat and draw out the “winner.” Thank you Brent and Marty. They now get the honour of setting the run next year. I’m sure they are up to the challenge?

Straight Line Navigation is challenging for most of us, so if you wish, there are members out there, willing to help you learn how to do it. Call a committee member, and I am sure they will put you in touch with someone to help you, maybe even take you for a drive around our last Navigators Run and explain the system line by line. Dinner will be served from 5.30 pm, so if you arrive early, just have coffee. The meal this year will be a Roast Pork or Seafood Chowder. Dessert may be purchased out of the Food Cabinet.
Saturday/Sunday 13/14th July, Hobbies Expo. We would like to display VCC eligible light trucks this year. We need a maximum of 5 vehicles. If you are willing to display your vehcile and it meets this criteria, please ring a member of the committee, and we can fill you in on what is required. Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring is to be held in New Plymouth, January 2021. JUNE 2019

As a Club, we should be supporting this event. It’s not often that we get a VCC Motoring Festival this close to our region. The committee is looking into block booking a Motel in New Plymouth. Would you be interested? Let us know. We have made contact with the Festival Organizers and have asked them to attend our Club Night on the 11th of September to speak about what’s happening. Again if you are interested “Please” attend this Club Night for further discussion and information about what is required of you and how you and your car fits in. Does your car need a VIC to attend? Find out on the 11th of September. That’s all from me, Tony. A presentation at the Federation of Motoring Clubs AGM. Mark Stockdale explaining a point about the Crash Analysis System that was being presented by Chris Butler Representatives of 27 clubs attended the meeting The Federation represents 106 different clubs from traction engines to the more modern car clubs and was founded in our club rooms in 1996 by the late Phil Andrews and friends. The Federation has working relationships with respective Ministers, government departments and agencies. The current President is Harry Duynhoven a previous Minister of Transport in a earlier Labour Government

Life Membership - Norman Pointon At the recent AGM of our club, life membership was bestowed upon Norm. This well-deserved honour is in acknowledgement for the time, effort, and guidance Norm has given to the club. Although not members until 1996 after Norm had retired from his position as Principal of Tauhara College, Norm & Jocelyn had been taking part in club activities and events with Loris & Ray Perry, his sister & brother in law. Life members (left to right), Joe Ridley, Norman Pointon Not too long after joining Norm and Graham Mock became club chairman, guiding the club through the last building extension after convincing the opposition the investment of just on $58000 would be of benefit to all club members. The end result, including new kitchen, library, extending the meeting area and parts shed extension have proved to be a tremendous asset and well-used facilities appreciated by all members. Norm was responsible for writing job descriptions for the club executive, the new membership booklet and induction kit. He also reintroduced the annual rally, the Chairman’s overnight run, the Hospice morning and the Foundation for the Blind run. He organised a joint run with the King Country Branch to Pureora Forest and another with King Country, South Waikato and Rotorua clubs to Whakamaru for coffee. Not only did Norm find the time to commit to the Taupo club, he was also President of the NZ Riley club for 6 years, an executive member for 18 years and recently the Waikato area secretary for four years. An executive member of the NZ Federation of Motoring Clubs (23 years), and a member of the VCC Technical committee (8 years). A person truly dedicated to things automotive. It was very satisfying to share in the occasion of the bestowing of Life membership on Norm. Congratulations to a dedicated and deserving member. Brent Davidson JUNE 2019

After a beautiful wedding and the overseas honeymoon, Tom was occupied doing some welding in the garage. His new wife was standing there by the bench watching him. After a long period of silence she finally said: "Honey, I've been thinking; now that we are married, maybe you don't need to spend so much of your time out here working in your garage. You could consider selling some of your machinery, tools and things like your gun collection, fishing gear, boat and get rid of all those stupid model cars. How about selling that old classic car that’s in the garage that only goes out once a month? " Tom got a most horrified look on his face and silently stared at her. She said, "Darling, what's wrong?" He replied, "Nothing … but for a minute there, you were starting to sound like my ex-wife." "Ex-wife!?" she screamed, "You NEVER told me you were previously married!” Tom replied, “I wasn’t”...

Gentle Annie - Or Not So Gentle? Norman and Jocelyn Pointon
I always knew that RM’s had great road holding capabilities– but I found out exactly how good they were! That will come later. On Sunday 3rd March we had a BBQ at home there were sixteen Riley members present, the evening was very warm and calm so everyone sat on the deck overlooking Lake Taupo. As you can imagine, people were talking about the next day’s run to Waiouru and then through the Gentle Annie before travelling on to Dannevirke. It was good to meet up with friends again and we all had a very pleasant evening. On Monday the group of eight cars met at the Lake lookout near the Taupo Airport and set out for Waiouru for the first stop of the day, some visited the Army Museum Cafe others enjoyed their coffee in the sun. Tanks and guns were viewed, no doubt army experiences were related before setting off to the meeting point, the intersection of SH1 and the Gentle Annie road. We passed through some very steep country where man and horse would be challenged to reach the peaks. Some stations were very large, well established and looked prosperous No doubt much hard graft had made them that way. It was a vastly different style of farming compared with the Waikato rolling hills and flats.

We stopped for lunch at the Springdale suspension bridge that was built in the early 1900s, some ventured in for a swim, others rested or walked across the bridge to get better photos. Then it was off towards Hastings and further south to Dannevirke. I noticed that the brake pedal was a bit soft but thought that it was just a case of making an adjustment when we reached Dannevirke. How wrong I was! We coped with braking until we started the descent from the summit – then it all happened. I quietly said to Jocelyn that “we had no brakes!” I managed to change down through the gears to get into second and pulled the hand brake on as hard as I could. This slowed the car slightly, but we were taking corners at breakneck speed that frightened me. In second gear we were doing 4200+ revs! I had no way of bringing the car to a halt, and we just had to ride it to the bottom of the hills. We came to a sharp right-handed corner far too fast to get around, and I could see us piling into the bank and the car rolling over on its right side. With my right hand fully engaged pulling on the handbrake, steering with the left – I somehow managed to throw the car around the corner just before we reached the bank. It was too close for comfort; the tyres were squealing, and we were out of control. I do not know how we reached the bottom of the hills where the car came to a halt in a gravel runoff placed there for runaway trucks. The Hosking’s, Nordell’s and Hans in the Bugatti had been following us – they sailed past with a blare for horns thinking that Jocelyn was administering drops to my eyes. We waited to see if anyone had noticed our nonappearance, meanwhile we hailed a passing car and asked them when they gained cell phone cover to please contact Brian Baker with a request for brake fluid. The Hosking’s had waited for us further on for some fifteen minutes and decided to return to see what was holding us up? Brian asked why I had the brakes on all the way down the hills and why the tyres were smoking and squealing? We soon found out when we filled the brake reservoir with water, there was a stream of it coming from the top left wheel cylinder. Next decision was for Brian H to get a message through to the AA which he did. When he caught up with David Nordell and Brian Baker, they thought the best solution was to cancel the AA, hire a trailer and recover the RM, take to Havelock North to Bill Riley’s home and sort it out later. With all of the Nordell luggage and four people, there was not sufficient space for our luggage as well. So off we went for Dannevirke with the RM in tow. Anja and Hanna had

been transferred into the Bakers One Point Five and Anja drove them. We arrived at the Motel at ten pm. David left to find their accommodation down the highway and we agreed to meet him at 7.30 next morning at Jon Telford Autos just up the road from us. While we were en route to Napier, to return the trailer, a mechanic advised that the problem was not cups, but a leaking sleeve on a wheel cylinder. David used his travelling office in the Pajero to try to locate suitable parts. We thought that we had cracked it when we learned that there was a Landrover wheel cylinder at Palmerston North and that this would be in Dannevirke that afternoon. But alas it was a double action one for the rear and of no use to us. On Wednesday, we heard that there was a possibility of a retired local engineer being available to re-sleeve the offending part. As it transpired, the person was a friend of Norman’s – Ivan and Mary Mc McCutchen had served as Wolsely representatives on the Federation of Motoring Clubs for a number of years. Ivan had stayed with the Pointon’s when meetings were held in Taupo! So, the cylinder was duly re-sleeved and fitted, the RM was ready for the road on Friday in time to return the RM to Taupo where it will undergo a full brake rebuild including new wheel cylinders and relined brakes. We drove home via Vinegar Hill in steady rain all the way home. Upon stripping the brake drums off it was noticed that the rear right had oil over the shoes, an oil seal had popped so there was not much braking coming from that direction. A close inspection of the underside of the car established that the essential roller stop on the rod attached to the master cylinder to prevent the foot brake going right back was missing! If that had been there, we would have had some rear brakes from the foot brake. New Landrover wheel cylinders and front brake shoes have been obtained, and the rear shoes have been relined so that the car is back to original with all new brake components. Our thanks go to all that assisted, especially President David, Brian Baker and Brian Hosking, Ivan McCutchen and the team at Jon Telford Autos who enjoyed a special morning tea from the Pointons for their service. I had the pleasure over the weekend, to visit Don in his Tauranga studio, and see what he’s currently working on. A painting nearing completion, of a NZ owned 1930 Type 46 Bugatti, and soon to be on it’s way to the Queenstown Gallery. The Type 46 used a 5.4 L (5359 cc/327 in³) straight-8 engine with 3 valves per cylinder driven by a single overhead camshaft. Power was reported at 140 hp (104 kW). It was a large car, weighing 2500 lb (1134 kg) and riding on a 138 in (3505 mm) wheelbase. 400 examples were produced from the end of 1929 through 1936. The three speed gearbox was in unit with the live rear axle, resulting in high unsprung weight, and a relatively harsh ride. Despite this, the model was a favourite of Le Patron, and it remained in production longer than might have been expected.

CITROEN ID 19, 1964, 64,599 MILES, ONE FAMILY OWNER This vehicle suffered an overheating problem and has been in dry storage since 1979. It was purchased from Furlongs Ltd in Taumarunui in 1964 and used by the owner who farmed in the district. It has the usual Citroen features of sphere suspension which was changed 1972 by the specialist agent in Rotorua. Cloud white body colour with red leather seats , interior heating, discs on the front power steering with the integrated hydraulic system. Following the engine problem new parts were purchased from Citroen Parts in Palmerston North - these included a set of liners, rings, pistons, head gasket, gasket set, timing chain, water pump rotor, and full set of bearings. The liners have been fitted to the block in accordance with the Citroen workshop manual. The head was planed and found to have problem – hence a replacement head is being sought and if procured will be supplied with the car, valves and guides are in excellent order. THE OWNER IS KEEN TO SEE THE VEHICLE RESTORED AND IS PREPARED TO NEGOTIATE A SUITABLE PRICE FOR THE CAR WITH THE PURCHASER THE CAR IS LOCATED IN TAUPO. IT WILL BE ONE OF THE LOWEST MILEAGE ID 19’s IN THE COUNTRY. It can be moved from its garage quite easily and winched onto a trailer or transporter.
