SAFARI WEEKEND

6

A reminder that the Safari weekend is coming up in November. This year is somewhat special as it will be our 41st safari. Special because one of our founding safari member's,' Don Campbell' had not missed attending any of these Weekends. It will seem strange not to have 'Stick' on Safari this year! This year we will be camping at O'Neills Reserve, Cave so any of you camping stalwarts who wish to join in for the weekend feel free to rock up with a tent and stay a night --or two! The facilities are 5star compared to 40 years ago with a His and Hers Long Drop!!. For any further information contact Barry Smith on 684 7405 or 027 307 9631.

Sporting Trial’s With concern about the way the weather was looking (very dry) our preparations changed and we decided to hold some Grasskana events as well as Trials. With a lastminute change in the weather, and with a reasonable amount of rain we decided to still carry on as planned with both events. The day dawned dry and stayed that way until a shower at lunch time. With low entry numbers I advised the entrants to bring a good supply of fuel as they would get more time in the seat. Our entrants came from Dunedin, Rolleston and Kaiapoi with a few keen young local members and some older ones, lining up on the day for the Grasskana. The trials allow for two drivers per car, so we ended up with 6 cars and 8 drivers for the trials and 2 extra cars for the grasskana. Following the briefing and scrutineering the action started, because we had a field of mostly newcomers we allowed a practice run, then 2 runs per driver, to attempt to achieve the same time for each run, the winner of this section was David Bright from Kaiapoi with 2 of the 4 runs on identical time. After an early break for lunch, some of the more standard vehicles even struggled a bit getting along the track to the start for the trials, this brought back memories of our first try at Reefton, it was so wet that we got stuck several times just in the waiting areas to commence the events. Event one was the simplest with the exception of the first 10m, with several of us using the first run as a practice to get stuck in the very deep ruts, these did not improve but everyone mastered these and most made it to the finish which involved crossing over a steep knob which did create some bellying issues and some managing to get some air under the wheels without stopping. The second event was slightly more Technical with quite a steep climb with tightish bends with not much grass and a few gum leaves thrown in, 3 cars scored the max of 20 points. Event 3 was relatively easy, with one section quite greasy and the entrants run the risk of sliding down hill into a rather large pond, however this area had dried out considerably since Saturday morning when it was hard to get a good footing just walking around. Number 4 again had some technical challenges with very slippery surface and tight turns while climbing steeply, 2 cars managed the possible points, the rest had great fun trying. A simple prize giving and after match function finished the day, most of the spectators and drivers had a great day and it has been asked that we continue the event next year and several of our onlookers have indicated that they are keen to participate in the future. Trials winner was Robert Trompetter from Dunedin. Thanks to Active Electrical for sponsoring the prizes, Bently Downs for use of their property and Garth Luscombe, Grant Stewart, Bruce Washington and Andre Kraenzlin for assistance with setting up and time keeping on the day. 2023 Mt Cook Rally – by Shannon Stevenson

On an overcast spring Labour Weekend Saturday morning, around 45 entered vehicles descended upon our Redruth clubrooms ready for our annual trip into the mountains, organised this year by the Munro family and supporters – the smallest Chris Chambers' 1929 Austin 7, the largest Bob White's alloy bodied 1964 Land Rover forward control, complete with caravan. It was a round of loud cheers within the clubrooms, with members watching the Rugby World Cup AB's vs Argentina game – the end result being the Argentina team having a trip back home. With a briefing had, and Timaru Herald photographer John Bisset taking happy snaps of members and vehicles it was time to hit the highways, starting with a labyrinth of southern Timaru streets headed for Coonoor Road and Landsborough Road – Colin Hawke and Claire Munro seen with timer and pens in hand. Headed through Fairview, it was a trip east and south to Salisbury, where gravel and non-gravel diverged, the gravel route taking participants along Adair Road into Otipua, and across Brasell’s Bridge to Grant Stewart and another timer checkpoint, and west to Holme Station and through the Pareora River Ford, meeting sealed section participants at Taiko. From Taiko, gravel and sealed routes headed to Cave, with long lines were seen outside the shop, petrol pumps, facilities and looking at the greenery across the road. Heading west, for us gravel participants it was a trip up into the back blocks of Monavale, with sealed participants headed for Fairlie. At Albury the gravel section took us up into the awe-inspiring Mackenzie Pass, where a number of vehicles travelling through soon had a yellow dust respray. By midday or just after most of us had reached Tekapo, with Twizel, and a trip along the canals reached by mid-afternoon. With a night's rest, it was outside the ever-growing hydro display at the entrance to Twizel at 9:30 for the field tests, led by the Munro's with several members supporting. These field tests consisted of a 'drive your right wheel between the sticks' (or left wheel for the Weir's LHD International truck), 'guess the number of lollies', 'measure height of headlamps' and 'throw ball into hubcaps' tests – the only mishaps being squashed road-cones and a vintage who's radiator briefly took on steam train tendencies. With Twizel in the rear-vision mirror it was a trip in fine weather to the Mt Cook hermitage, with most arriving by 12pm, with cars parked across the grass in front and members either having picnics outside, or braving the mile-long cafe queue inside. While away from the cars, a number of members soon found their vehicles gaining the attention of little Aussie expatriates, toy Koala bears placed on aerials and wipers by South Australian visitors hosted by the Day's, Ken and Marie McAllan. By mid-afternoon most of us made the return to Twizel – a lineup of air-cooled rear engine Volkswagens at the side of the road taking the interest of many. The evening dinner was held at the Twizel Events Centre, where presentations were had and many a great story was told by various members. Unlike previous years there was fortunately no hard luck trophy presentation. The meal and pudding went down a treat - mentions by a member of the absence of cream had Krystal Munro running sans heels to the nearby Four Square to resolve the issue. Overall a great weekend had, thanks to the Munros and supporters for organising. Shannon Stevenson ( More photos and list of presentations in December Tricar— Editor )

Motorcycle Display My name is Grant Waters and I am liaising on behalf of CAMS to assist with organising the bike display at the Southern Classic at Levels Raceway 24-26th November. I am reaching out to see if you would be interested in displaying your bike over the weekend. The preference would be for the weekend but more than happy to accommodate you if only wish to display for either of the days. We have a 30m x10m marquee for the display in the pit area and free entry to the event for anyone that displays a bike. We can also accommodate any club banners you wish to display and can group the club bikes together depending on numbers. If this is something you would be interested in, please give me a call on 027 3251722 so we can discuss the details. I look forward to hearing from you. Notes from the Library (October) By Barry B The following notes sent for the last Tricar disappeared into the ether and only the relevant photos arrived. I hope this will help make those photos more relevant. We are back home now. We are now in Canada, British Columbia to be more precise, and the only thing Library related I have to report is that the small number of surplus magazines from the Library that I brought over on our last visit in 2019 were still in one of the cupboards in our 1980 Dodge campervan so still had some old car reading to call on, specifically when at son, Darren’s rustic lakeside cabin. It has been noticed that particularly inland where we went directly from Vancouver, old cars in the 50s 60s and 70s are prevalent in various stages of dereliction and a few restored and Restomod examples were also encountered on the road. One still in regular service is the 1955 Chevrolet panel delivery that sits outside the Copper Eagle Bakery in Greenwood, Canada’s smallest city, which only has a few hundred residents. It was incorporated back when mining in the Boundary Country was at its peak and it had a vastly larger population and a huge copper smelter, now long closed. It’s an appealing historic place to visit and amongst the relics observed around town were 2 decaying 240Z Datsun’s now highly sought after if corrosion free which the gold one certainly wasn’t! Also spotted was a very restorable 1949/50 Dodge 2 door sitting on someone’s lawn facing Highway 3 the main southern highway through to Alberta. Also on Highway 3 was a weather beaten looking Ford Thunderbird snapped as we headed back toward Vancouver. Our journey home was interrupted by the Dodge needing some emergency repair. Luckily, the problem occurred only a few miles away from the home of some good Datsun 240Z friends of son Darren. These wonderful folks not only arranged for a local repair shop to look at it but put us up for 3 nights when the needed parts did not arrive on time on the Friday. They also lent us their Chevvy Tracker so we could visit the nearby historic Grist Mill at Keremeos (Very interesting and superbly presented) and then the Apex Ski Field which Darren had always wanted to check out. They also shuttled us back and forth to the repair shop. This was a typical country affair with a yardful of dead or dying vehicles including a 1953 Chev 4door and 2 seedy ‘65 2 doors. Still they got us going again at a reasonable cost. The next step was to be Vancouver Island, but events conspired against us. I had a most unpleasant painful problem with my heel and it was difficult walking. Amazingly this resolved quickly but Carla hurt her back which severely restricted her mobility though thankfully she improved enough to get on the plane home. So the hoped for automotive sightings on Vancouver Island did not eventuate and the only local sighting I got was a big Cadillac 2 door which, if my suspicions are correct, was languishing in another property on the other side of the road when we were last there in 2019. Nothing much seems to have been done to it. At least I got to do a bit of restoration work on the Dodge removing and replacing some dodgy flooring. That of course meant all the vinyl floor covering had to be replaced too !!

Notes from the Library

November 2023

During my time away overseas, the sad news reached me that 60 plus year member Terry Wilson had passed away. Terry kindly donated to the library his book about the Cars in his Life. If you have not taken the opportunity to peruse this volume it is available to take out and is recommended. Terry was an active member for many years and I have supplied Les with some photos from our archives that may bring back memories for older members. I am pleased to report that everything is in good fettle in the Library and offer my thanks to those who kept it open during my absence. Thanks to Phil O’Brien a regular donor who has given us several more items. Thanks too to John Campbell who has donated a number of books. Someone left a very old motoring badge which I could not positively identify. Shannon had a look at it and photographed it immediately posting it to the VCC Facebook Group page. Answers were almost immediate with the badge being identified as issued by the Otago Motor Club. It was one of the first being unnumbered issued during the period 1913-1920. The badges were manufactured by Anderson and Co. the wings at the top apparently signify the Club’s association with the A A. This information from motoring historian and VCC member Grant Taylor Barry Barnes Librarian (Photos remembering Terry Wilson can be found elsewhere in the Tricar)

AUTOMOTIVE NOSTALGIA Your committee, and attending members at the October Noggin & Natter, have agreed to a proposal to bus paying cruise-ship passengers from the upcoming Cruise visits to Timaru, between Monday 20 November 2023 & Sunday 17 March 2024, to our club-rooms for vehicle displays, arts & craft sales, and memorabilia = a total of 12 cruise ship visits at this stage, with likely more to be included. Our plan is to bring paying ship passengers to our club-rooms, where you, our membership, bring your vehicles/motorcycles along for each cruise ship day, for display, and remain with them to show them/explain to our guests - we want this experience to be as 'interactive' as possible for our visitors. We envisage 15 or so cars, with a 'mix' of styles and years to be on display at the club-rooms front and rear yards. We intend to have a morning and afternoon session, so we would like those attending on each date to be able to stay for lunch, and do BOTH displays. We would love to have some motorcycles on display in our club-rooms & possibly outdoors, along with the Cecil Wood Tri-Car. We have secured 2-3 'unique & eclectic' craft people to attend our club-rooms, to display and sell their wares to passengers - to entice not only those interested in our Automotive Nostalgia encounter, but to ensure we provide a 'point of difference' to what else is on offer to cruise passengers within our district. We also have the opportunity to sell some of our SCVCC memorabilia during each of the sessions. Our guests will also be offered morning/afternoon tea, access to our Library & Parts Dept, and we will run continuous old rally and other available footage via our TV systems. The cruise ship dates are also in the Tri car and we would like to hear from those of you yet to hear about, and then commit to this project. It needs full support from our membership, and not just committee members and the regular helpers please! Grant MITCHELL is handling the roster of people and their vehicles and he will likely contact many of you to get details of your vehicles and if/when you might be available. Should be good fun and not onerous at all... Grant's cell phone contact is: 021 296 1126 Maybe give him a text or a call around your availability please. An information sheet /photos about your vehicle on display would also be helpful.
