Well firstly thanks to Colin and Ashley for stepping up while Nola and I were away. Next is to say thanks to Gavin and Michelle Munro for setting the rally routes for Labour Weekend. Everyone thought they were terrific rally routes and a huge thanks to all those who helped me with field tests and results. A huge thanks to those who helped setup and put away at the Sunday evening dinner. All of this helped eased my load somewhat. We have a water leak in the clubrooms, (not the part that has been replaced) and it has a temporary fix in the meantime until permanent repairs can be carried out. We are still looking for speakers for the coming year. If you know of or have heard someone speak at anything else you have attended, let me or a committee member know and we’ll do the organising. Nola and I attended the Australasian Dodge Bros Rally in Busselton, West Australia and had a fabulous time. Terrific rally routes , and many places of interest to visit. Great to meet up with others that attend these rallies over the years. Normally held 2 yearly, but this one of course was disrupted by Covid.
Still no word from head office regarding the 50 yr, 35 yr, and 25 yr presentations. With so many changes around this, we will have to let you know when this is to happen. It has been a real nightmare. That’s it from me for now, Happy motoring, Cheers Alistair
I have been away for the last three Wednesdays but the Parts Dept. has been well looked after by Clive Merry and John Campbell. My thanks to them both for this. The visitors still came for their special items for their cars, and the usual Wed, crew as well. As summer is looming the lawns are now being attended to regularly by Wayne Young, and the gardens spruced up by Eric Robins. Cheers, Barry Smith.

Although I have been discouraging donations of certain magazines in particular Beaded Wheels I was pleased to collect from Terry Wilson, a 60 year plus member, a number of early Beaded Wheels among which were copies we did not have. As a result our collection of B W is now virtually complete.
Terry has also kindly donated a collection of the Veteran Car Club of New Zealand Bulletin which consistently features articles about historically important early motoring and for my money is actually a better publication than Beaded Wheels these days. I have used some of the recent funds from swap meet sales to put these into binders and I encourage members interested in early motoring in NZ. to borrow them.
We did already have some copies which means there are some on the duplicates table while I am wading my way through a quick perusal of the remainder before putting them out also. In addition, Terry also donated his collection of the quality Vintage and Veteran magazine and again our Club collection has been enhanced by filling holes amongst the early issues particularly, but there are a large number of issues surplus.
I have also been working my way through the recent donations from Bernie Fairbrass and Les Wenlock’s estate with Bernie’s dealt with while there is still a bit from Les to process. From Bernie, two interesting titles amongst this material are “Taking to the Road Motorcycling in NZ” and “The Book of the Morris Minor”.
The ex Les volumes include no less than 17 different publications relating to Jaguars! A couple of others are the prominent photographer Euan Sarginson’s book “Vintage Motoring in New Zealand” which was a prestige and expensive item when published in the mid1960s featuring many entrants in the 1965 “Haast” Rally, and the “Automobile Quarterly World of Cars” which includes quality photography and biographies of many different marques. Another somewhat different book is the 1971 publication “Military Vehicles in New Zealand“, and I would invite the enthusiasts for this type of vehicle to take it out. Amongst these donations were a number of items not relevant to our Library. Some of these books have already found sympathetic homes and the remainder will be heading for the upcoming Rotary Book Sale.
I thought some of the books may have some historical value so I visited the Museum, who unfortunately restrict their collection to books directly related to Timaru, so only took one book on the history of the Port of Timaru. Some examples were several technical books related to the building trade, NZ Stamp Monthly from 1937, NZ School Journals from 1928, “The Kauri” (1953), a 1937 promotional brochure “Sunny Oamaru.” If anyone is potentially interested in any of these, check out the Rotary Book Sale! Thanks to Bruce Bishop for the donation of a couple of Ford Zephyr manuals. At the Canterbury Swap Meet I was hailed by Canty Br member Alan Wills who has been a long time supporter of South Canterbury events and I was handed a folder containing copies of entry forms and other documents relating to our events of bygone years. These have now been placed in our archives which are a bit sketchy in terms of such holdings. I expressed my thanks to Alan on your behalf in passing this stuff on rather than just binning it. As a final word I would again remind members to check out the duplicates available free on the table in the Club Rooms.
