NOGGIN AND NATTER

First Thursday of the Month

Coffee break while waiting for Cruise ship guests.

Hi everyone,

February has been and gone, and the year seems to be flying by real quick. Only a few more cruise ship visits, (3 in March) and I certainly thank each and everyone one of you who have contributed to the success we have had. It has been a real learning curve for us all and you have coped admirably. Thankyou.

Thursday night at the Noggin remember that there will be the ongoing discussion regarding whether we change to the new system that management want us to do. Ie that is to have only 3 representatives from the North Island and 3 from the South Island. You will have all received the information regarding this in previous emails and Tri-Car postings. This concern YOU.

Colin and I welcome your feedback. We need to know how you want us to vote at the executive meeting 16/17 March.

Nola and I have had a visit to Blenheim for the Vintage Rally ( Dodge ), then a change of vehicle (MG) to go to the Art Deco in Napier. After the Executive meeting we will go to Greymouth for the Scenicland Rally in the Chev Coupe, then a couple of days break in St Arnaud before we head up to the South Island Easter Rally in Nelson.

We are certainly helping the economy fuel wise. While in Blenheim we had 3 vehicles, The Campbells Chev, the Martins (from Cromwell) in their Alvis and us in the Dodge. All at the NPD at Redwoods at the same time. $180 for our days motoring. And that was after our seniors discount. Ah well Petrol to Pleasure as we had said before.

More on our recent touring in the next Tri-Car.

Don’t forget the Mid Island on Sunday the 3rd. Its free entry for South Canterbury members, thanks to the Claire Collett fund.

At this stage I am planning on having the Chairmans Rally on Sunday 21st April. More on this in the next Tri-Car.

Hope to see a good number of you on the Mid Island.

Remember the Swap Meet is 6th April with the cleanup after the swapmeet that day. We need ALL members to help with the laying out of the grounds on Friday 5th and your lunch will be provided.

Our Swap Meet is at the ORARI RACECOURSE from now on. A new site layout and better car parking this year. No road issues this time. Cheers Alistair

Open Day 2024

Wanted

Someone to co-ordinate the annual All American weekend 2024

If you would like to know more please contact our chairman Alistair Day for details.

This month has seen more of a clean out of non useable parts and scrap steel and castings to the extent we filled two skips for the recycler.

We have also been stripping the upholstery off old car seats, and scrapping the frames whilst the material had to be transported to the dump.

This has opened up more storage space for us .

The Swap Meet is looming once again so we will soon be sorting out parts for the Trailers.

Meanwhile parts keep coming in from donors which is much appreciated. We are open each Wednesday from 9am till noon.

Magazine articles

I’m always looking for articles, even short ones, for the Tricar, or a photo or two of an event that you have attended in your club eligible vehicle.

Eel feeding was a highlight.

The South Canterbury Branch Ladies Rally took place on Sunday 28 January, organised by the Munro family.

With over 15 cars outside the club rooms of varying ages, it was on the road by mid morning, firstly through Timaru streets, before Pleasant Point and Raincliff. The end stop was Witton Lodge, at the north of Geraldine, where we set up our picnic tables in the vast landscapes and forested grounds in front of the double storey stately home, having been developed by successive owners, the current owners Bill and Lee Burdon having done great things.

Flowing through the property was a stream, the eels swimming upstream for their afternoon feed of dog roll meat created a lot of interest.

Library Report

February 2024

The last month has been fairly quiet though some items came in via the Parts Shed, which included quite a few motorbike books. The donor did not want to be acknowledged which is just as well for Alistair could only recall he was a former member and not his name! There are a couple of books of note among these. One is a little magazine type book entitled “The Book of Motorcycles” Published in Australia in about the late 60s it is largely American in content but covering mostly English and a few continental machines. There is a comprehensive article on sidecar riding which is hard to follow as it is written to cover sidecars fitted for driving on the other side of the road so to make sense of it you have to read left for right and vice versa. An article entitled “What’s ahead in Motorcycle Design” was reasonably accurate given the trend of most futuristic forecasts of motoring in the future to be wildly inaccurate when viewed many years later. The prediction that 4 cyl motors would be too wide to fit transversely across a motorcycle frame proved to be quite inaccurate and it would be interesting to have seen the writer’s reaction to the transverse CBX 6cyl Hondas! As the author of Modern Motorcycle Mechanics first published in 1942 he may never have had the opportunity to react!

The other book “Ford Model A album”, published in 1960 is by Floyd Clymer and renowned Model T and Model A expert Leslie R Henry.

It covers in detail all the Ford A body styles available from 1928 to 1931. Something I did not know was that the early 1928 standard phaetons (tourers) and roadsters did not have any exterior door handles and the early cars only had a hand operated windscreen wiper before the introduction of an electric wiper. I knew there were a lot of body styles but did not realise just how many were on offer, nor that the rare but highly desirable Victoria coupe and convertible sedans were not available until 1931. The book refers of course to American production and the Canadian built cars which we got in NZ were probably different, (in addition to the obvious one of location of steering wheel) to their US built counterparts. Don’t know if Canadian production also included the rarer body styles.

Bruce Brown brought in some publications to the Parts for the guys to pick over, not all motoring related but I grabbed a few manuals and another motoring book to add to the collection.

Brian Grace brought in a variety of mostly English classic car magazines and there were among them quite a few later issues added to the collection while the remainder are out on the duplicates table.

The Open Day saw a number of visitors coming through. All were complimentary of our facilities and I managed to sell 1 book and an owners handbook while another visitor took some Hot Rod magazines.

With the Swap Meet coming up the plan is to again take out most of the duplicated stuff with magazines free, while hopefully the books and manuals might bring in a dollar or two for the Library. So check out the duplicates table before they are all gone!
