Chairman's report

Hello everyone,. Well it's Sunday night I'm writing this and Nola and I have just arrived back from the Blossom Festival Rally in Cromwell. Pleased to see 4 other South Canterbury Branch members in attendance as well. Its a pity not many ever come to our rallies. We are working on that. It was a rally with a difference and one we might try out at some stage in the future.

A huge thankyou to the Swap Meet committee and for all those that helped with the set up, Clean up, and on the day. A mammoth effort, especially for Colin Johnstone who had the local knowledge to organise a new venue at such short notice. Michelle Munro had a huge headache with having to contact all the site holders to advise the change of venue. She was helped with this by Krystle Munro as well. A very trying time for the Swap Meet committee and they all deserve a pat on the back for their achievements. An easier venue to set up, but of course always teething problems with a new venue. There will be 50years presentations to come, but we are not sure on a date as this all has to go to head office and things have changed with how this is now managed. You will be advised. Our CHRISTMAS PARTY WILL BE HELD ON DECEMBER 3rd. Mark your calendars as we need a minimum of 50 people to attend for catering purposes. You can pay at the NOVEMBER NOGGIN, as the final numbers need to be in by 20th November. If you want to pay on line then the account number is SC VCC 03 1355 000647203 00 and please use your name as reference plus Xmas Dinner. Tickets will be $45 per person. Because of the Canterbury Swap Meet on the Friday of Noggin Week we will not have a speaker for the October Noggin. The noggin will still be on and parts shed open. We do have a speaker organised for November.

The Mt Cook rally is on at Labour Weekend, so please help the organisers and get your entry form in ASAP. Don't forget that we have the club rooms open on the Friday night with a supper and we need a good number of Local members to attend, as we know we have a contingent from the North Island arriving to do the Mt Cook and we don't want them to feel that they are the only ones there. Show your support even if you're not doing the rally. A lot of work goes into the preparation of all rallies for the club members benefit, so PLEASE show your support and appreciation.

Keep a watch on the coming events in your Tri Car. There is a lot of events on during November, and your support is very much appreciated. There is a 3 day rally in December, and the entry forms are at the club rooms, or you can email Nola or download from the website. Remember if you know of any speakers, let me, Colin or a committee member know, and we can do the organising.

Thanks to all those who contributed to the Cancer Rally, a very successful and financial day. You will see the report further in this Tri Car. Keep a watch on Seven Sharp as they are supposed to be running a section on C W Wood who was the original maker of the Tri Car (our one is supposed to be featured) and one of the earliest car manufacturer's of Motor Vehicles in New Zealand, and made right here in Timaru.

That's it from me. See you at Labour Weekend.. Cheers Alistair

Parts Shed Report for September 2022

Things were happening this month:

Donated parts include:

From Ivan Patterson

Ford Anglia guards, bonnet, 13-inch wheels (2) A40 bonnet, as new Bosch Alt, sealed beam headlights, headlight covers, chrome grill inset.

From Ivan Beswarick: We were given several clutch plates, brake cylinders, plus numerous small items.

Alvan Jones: Front Shroud (truck) and a tidy radiator off ? car. It is with great thanks to these persons who donate what would normally go to the scrap man, as they assist our members to complete or maintain their project in hand.

At last our Swap Meet finally happened so the Wednesday prior to this saw two large trailers being loaded in anticipation of making some returns on our labour. Thanks to John Campbell and Jim Geddes for towing these the extra distance to our different venue this year which was the Orari Racecourse. Our sales site a little different too! It was' beside the hedge' (with apologies to Bill Weir).

Ably manned by John, Jim and Norm Bunt, our Parts Dept did benefit from the revenue collected.

Our Parts Department always open from 9 a.m. To 12 noon each Wednesday at back of our clubrooms, 19 Redruth St, Timaru.

Cheers, Barry Smith,

When something calls for an effort the South Canterbury VCC shows how its done. The rally was a big success thanks to the input of our members. Special thanks to Nola Day and Colin Johnstone for an effort above and beyond what could reasonably be expected in supporting this cause. It was a lovely place to visit and I think everyone appreciated the opportunity to have a close up view of Orari Gorge Station and Homestead and surrounds. Our grateful thanks to the Peacock family for letting us have the use of their property. John Foster

CANCER RALLY DONATION.

Hi everyone, Just to let you all know that we made an amazing deposit to the Cancer society following the Cancer Rally. $3800.00 Plus they also receive $500 donation from the Temuka Lions who manned the Bar B Que. A huge total of $4300. A really great effort from all concerned. Sincere thanks must go to John Foster and to Colin Johnstone who made it all happen after 2 previous years of trying. Thanks to Peacock family at Orari Gorge Station who allowed us to use their magnificent venue, and to Waipopo Orchard who donated all the apples.

Notes from the Library

October 2022

The stall at the Swap Meet proved successful in moving on some of the duplicate holdings particularly the duplicate magazines which were offered free, though not all were taken. A Canterbury enthusiast took a lot of them having lost all his many years collection in a fire. He has contacted me since and plans to visit again and look through what is still left so if any of those members who approached me at the Swap Meet but didn’t get to the site should take a look quickly. Some books and manuals were sold so there is a small petty cash holding again for stationery purchases etc.

There has been a reshuffle of the layout to fit in a display cabinet obtained gratis by Ashley. This will allow another rationalization of the display items in due course.

I have had recent visits from the Librarians of Waimate Branch (Brett O’Rourke) and North Otago (Robert Hutton). Both gentlemen were impressed by, and envious of, the space we have available. Donations continue to arrive and I thank Norm Bunt for facilitating the donation of 3 books on Minis from Stuart McKnight who has had to go into care and wanted a good home for his books which were important to him.

Tony McGillen has brought along a copy of the Magpie Temuka Community News which featured a fulsome report on Tony’s vehicles. This is displayed on the lecturn by the Library door so make sure to have a look at it when next in the Club Rooms

Just arrived are a number of books and magazines from Bernie Fairbrass who has also recently had to move and downsize. One notable book among these is the Morris Minor Restorers Guide by Paul Skilleter. At the same time arrived another pile of books from Les Wenlock’s Estate which I have not yet had the time to investigate fully but Jaguar related ones are conspicuous. Many thanks to Bernie and to Ros Wenlock.

Among these latter donations are a number of publications not related to our activities so you will see some of these on the duplicates table which members are invited to take away. The Library is a resource for all members. Do come and check it out. Feel free to ask me if there’s something you are looking for.

The Continental Run by Shannon Stevenson

The Continental Run, a firm fixture in our Annual Calendar, took place on Sunday September 25, organised by Kevin and Ngadia Manchester, and Ron and Linley Hammer.

The Run attracted a variety of cars from across Continental Europe this included a Saab from Sweden, Peugeots and - several - Renaults from France, BMW and Mercedes Benz from Germany, and from Italy, Fiat and an incredibly rare anywhere in the world 1966 Iso Grifo. An interesting difference with this run was the abundance of modern machinery the run being for all ages of vehicle. The oldest entrant, a rear engined Renault 4CV entered by the Lester family, travelled all the way from North Canterbury for the weekend.

The Iso and its hand made bodywork took the interest of many of us it was interesting once the key was turned, the engine roar being the familiar one of Chevrolet's 327 V8. In addition, there were two supporter cars originating from off the French coast in the spirit of things a scale model Citroen DS was placed on this author's Ford Escort (actually an Anglo German design) dashboard.

With a briefing had, it was on the 'route' by 10:30 headed out south of Timaru, up into Fairview and down into Holme Station crossing the first water filled river ford of several. Headed into the Manchester's stamping ground, Southburn we soon found ourselves in Lyalldale passing the old school, closed 1929. After Lyalldale our cars chassis all had a wash at Gray's Crossing, before headed up dusty gravel roads into the Otaio region. It was at this point I found myself in with several others on the run travelling at open road speeds this included the Renault 4CV.

With travels on a number of winding back roads through Hunter, and more trips through fords, it was into the outer reaches of Waimate, and onto the gorge and the end venue the forever home of Ted's bottle, Waihao Forks Hotel.

Though a small country pub, it ably fitted us all in amongst the locals the variety of drink on tap, the various sandwiches and the home cooked oversized pizzas going down a treat. On the back wall, Ted's bottle held pride of place, still awaiting him to come back on the now long since closed railway to Waihao.

With a full meal, a number of us took in a bout of automotive hill-climbing to the White Horse monument above Waimate the view being an awe inspiring sight for many.

'Merci' to the Manchester's and Hammer's for organising a great country continental outing.

Daffodil Rally by Shannon Stevenson

On an overcast late August Sunday morning, a fair few South Canterbury car enthusiasts were out in force at Caroline Bay in support of the Cancer Society with the annual Daffodil Day run.

With a number of vehicles awakening from winter hibernation, and with COVID-19 curtailing the last two years proceedings, this was a chance for many to blow out the cobwebs, and power through the gears through the scenic back-blocks of South Canterbury. There were a wide variety present of ages and sizes of vehicle a mix of standard and modified, a fair few from various local clubs, the raffle sellers doing a roaring trade.

With a briefing held to the crowd by several of our members, cars hit the road before 11am, this author armed with phone camera filming the procession leaving the bay since placed on Youtube for the world to seeit was a trip through Timaru Central and out through to the rolling hills of Fairview encountering Munro's Ford Model A towing the SCVCC portable sound system - and Taiko, and onto Clelands Hill, Opihi and Pleasant Point regions.

Pleasant Point was a compulsory stop for many, with the lure of petrol pumps, pies and ice-creams from the dairy and a new empty shed awaiting a fire appliance display. After 'Point' it was a trip into Richard Pearce country, Waitohi before reaching Geraldine and Woodbury the cafe there doing a roaring trade. Travelling a criss-cross of local roads, our venue, Tripp Settlement / Orari Gorge Station was soon reached, Marion Foster handing out a printed history of the venue to participants as they arrived for picnics in the gardens.

As it was, Tripp Settlement, nestled in bush to the north west of Geraldine had quite a history Charles Tripp setting up a successful high country sheep farm run in the 1860s the 19th century homestead still in all its glory with a garden capably able to swallow up participants and their vehicles further gardens across a creek, and above the homestead, historic farm sheds and machinery adjacent to working farm station, currently running a mix of cows, deer and sheep.

Furthering the fun of the day the Tricar was present, and rides were had on it enthralling younger (6-14 years) and older 'kids' (above 50 years) alike.

A talk was had about Tripp Settlement, and raffles were drawn outside the homestead the property keeping many of us entertained for hours. Overall an enjoyable run, and we thank those who made it happen. Shannon Stevenson

Humber’s at Mt Cook. Barry B

Back in the early 1960s, probably 1963, when this photo was taken Mt Cook Rally was a popular event for veteran car owners and there were intermittent efforts to make it a solely veteran event, then subsequently a rear guard try at restricting it to vintage and veteran vehicles. I recall speaking out against such a proposal at the first AGM I attended in South Canterbury in June 1984 which failed to get accepted and at that point its future as an event for all club eligible vehicles seems to have become finalized. Undoubtedly, that has contributed to the lower numbers of veteran and vintage vehicles taking part, but I would say it still remains a great event to challenge the vehicles of those eras and their owners, while owners of later machines can still have the pleasure of participation.

Back to the picture:

The car on the left is a 1908 Coventry Humber entered by late Hugh Foster of Christchurch. It was restored from a wreck found in Kirwee which was largely complete by today’s standards but represented a major restoration back in the day. I believe the car is still in the possession of the Foster family.

18

The next is a Humberette (1913?) owned relatively briefly by former South Canterbury life member late Don Oddie. One of his sons, David I think, recalled the car as not very reliable and no flashing performer with its rather small V twin engine. Some were air cooled and some water cooled. Judging by what appears to be a functioning radiator this one would have been the latter. I think Don bought it in the North Island and where it went afterward I’m not sure. The brown car is a 1915 10.2 hp motored very briskly to many events by late Alan Baker from Christchurch, usually accompanied by his wife Jean whose Mt Cook party trick was to snip in half the tie of anyone who dared to wear one!. The car was found in Christchurch in the early days by Club founder Andrew Anderson and owned by his late wife Mollie before Alan bought it. When found it had a very low mileage something like 1500 from new and it was in basically original condition. It did have replacement aluminium pistons fitted and was fully balanced which was maybe one reason Alan could motor it at a steady 55mph. My Dad had a similar car and it never went that quick. Alan kindly cast a set of pistons for Dad and the little 1502 cc (65mmx120mm) motor propelled the car along at a good cruising speed of 40mph+, not bad for a quite large touring body but performance was nothing like Alan’s. His car is now part of the Gavin Bain collection.

Interestingly, Hugh Foster later restored a 2 seater version of the same car also painting it the original brown colour and this too may still be with the family.

OPENING RUN

The Opening Run was run by South Canterbury this year and was well supported with Ashburton members attending on Sunday 4 September. We had approx. 45 cars and it dawned a nice sunny day. After morning tea and the briefing the cars left the clubrooms and headed towards Timaru but turned off into Otipua Rd and down Coonoor Rd. We continued out through Holme Station and then Southburn. We ventured along a mixture of sealed and unsealed roads through Otaio and Hunter. Then after passing through Waituna we eventually headed up the hill to the White Horse Monument. It was very windy on top but most people tucked themselves over the north side of the hill for lunch out of the worst of the wind. The area has been recently renovated and improved with the local school helping with the planting and making totem poles as features. It is well worth visiting as there is magnificent views out along the coast towards Timaru and the surrounding areas. There have been viewing platforms erected and picnic areas plus new toilets. Everyone enjoyed the route with the shingle roads being well maintained. After lunch everyone made their way home at their own leisure.
