The North Otago Branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand Inc. Windsor Rally 2020

Chairpersons Corner February 2021 Happy New Year, Welcome to 2021. I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year. I spent time in the North Island with my family, was great to get away and visit some places I have not been to for a very long time. I would like to start my first Chairpersons report by thanking Peter for his work as Chairman of this branch for the last few years. I wish you all the best with your new life in Cambridge. I will continue with the work that Peter started with our clubroom renovations. The clubroom renovations are well and truly underway. The new wall between the library and main room has been built, ready for the library to be lined with new gib before we paint, and new carpet is laid. Thank you to Derek and Clive for your hard work over the last month. While a lot of focus has been on getting the clubroom renovations underway and completed this year, I would like to ask you all to think about what you would like to see happening within our branch over the next year, maybe you would like to see more runs and happy you are to help with the planning of them or you would like to think about coming on to the branch committee. Please come and chat to me about any ideas you may have. We have a busy month ahead of us with our All British on the 27th of February starting at the Historic Precinct area on Wansbeck Street. As this is part of our 60th Branch Anniversary celebrations We invite all makes to participate in this day of motoring. The cars will be on display before enjoying a run to the lunch venue. It will be a great opportunity to show the public a wide range of vehicles that are eligible to join the Vintage Car Club. Take the time over the next few weeks to makes sure your car is ready to participate in a great day of motoring. This will be followed by a dinner in the evening to celebrate our branches 60th Anniversary. Our National President Dianne Quarrie will be coming down to attend the dinner and present badges to our members who have been a member for 60 ,50, 35 and 25 years. There is still time if you would like to attend this dinner, please get in touch with Kathleen. I look forward to seeing you all at our first club night for the year on the 3rd of February, with a night run. Hopefully, the weather gods will bless us with a fine evening that I can enjoy driving my MG B. Happy Motoring Rebecca

Club Captain Report Christmas has been and gone, I hope everyone had a great time with friends and family. In my last report we were running up to the Windsor Rally. This turned out to be a great success with over seventy entries. The day started out brilliantly as people arrived at the start point for registration, cars were flagged away a little late but the atmosphere was pretty light hearted. Everyone arrived at the Five Forks hall destination with only one vehicle requiring a little assistance to make the end point. The field tests and lunch were held in brilliant weather. Thanks to the Young Farmers Club for their efforts running a BBQ lunch. Luckily we had hired the hall as the forecast thunderstorms arrived as everyone assembled in the hall for prize giving. For near on an hour it poured down and some of those that had left early to escape it were caught in the middle of it. By the time prize giving had been completed the storm had all but past and everyone else departed in fine weather. Thanks to all of you that helped in the organising and running of this event. The organising committee has completed a debrief of the event and lessons recorded for inclusion in future event planning. The New Year run to the Fairlie parade was short on participants from NO with three of us travelling to Fairlie. This may have been due to the projected weather forecast or the short lead time given in our email. Either way it was hats off to Will and June Hearne for taking their Triumph Gloria two seater convertible, at least we could ( and did) put the hood up when it rained. The parade was held in fine but overcast weather with the rain holding off until late afternoon so the run home saw heavy rain. Planning is well under way for the February All British day. As this is also our 60th celebrations weekend we have opened the All British to all makes. A separate prize will be given to the best non-British vehicle. So clean up the car and make sure you get out on this one. The day will culminate with a dinner and 60 and 50 year service awards being presented. If you have not already decided to attend the evening function please reconsider and let Kathleen know as soon as possible. We want as many members there as possible to celebrate our 60th year. For the first club night for 2021 it has been decided to run a twilight run. The run will follow a short meeting so if you don’t want to do the run please attend the meeting. It will be a chance to see how much progress has been made on the upgrade and catch up with everyone. Regards Derek

If you are able to pay on line the branch number is 03 0937 020599600 please reference your name & 60th Dinner. There are members asking about name badges again. I am compiling a list so if you would like one please get in touch. For Your Information. Any member may attend the committee meetings if they wish but only the committee members can vote. Our next committee meeting is 17th February. Regards Kathleen Acknowledgement Regretfully, I need to inform you that member Colin Jack passed away on 12th January. A card has been sent to Rosemary and a tribute will follow in the March Distributor. Kathleen Perry, Secretary.

Secretary and Treasurer Roles The Annual General Meeting will be held in June, (unless Covid -19 determines otherwise). So, members need to be giving some thought to how they want their club to be run and who by. At this stage we will be looking for a new Secretary and a new Treasurer as both Clive and I have advised we will not be standing again. Rebecca has indicated she will put her name forward for the Chairperson role and Derek has said he would like to do one more year as Club Captain. The role of Secretary is straight forward for anyone who has had any administrative experience and is reasonably well informed and experienced with a keyboard and the internet, e.g. can search

the web, can do normal email functions, manage electronic filing, and is familiar with online banking. The role includes relationship responsibilities associated with the National Office, which is mostly providing the office with information, or circulating information sent out from the National Office. The club has its own laptop and printer which are the responsibility of the Secretary and can be held at their home. There is also a postal box and a NZ Post service which can advise the Secretary when any mail has been put in the box, which means no unnecessary checking of the postal box. While it is preferable that the secretary role is managed by one person, there are aspects that could be shared, e.g. a Minute Secretary to do the Minutes and Agendas only, or where events are being run, the event sub-committee covers administration in its event organisation thereby requiring the Secretary to manage only whatever needs to be held in the Club’s records as we are an Incorporated Society.

$$$

The Treasurer

role has changed somewhat over the last few months to reflect the technology advancements and move away from using cheques. Anyone personally familiar with online banking through their work or personal accounts will be able to manage the club’s accounts and provide the necessary reporting to the committee. The Treasurer works closely with the Secretary when events are being held that require payment of an entry form, (just a matter of coordinating entries received with the payments), and with committee income and expenditure. Full training will be available if anyone would like to take this role on and learn a new skill, which has been the case for Clive. The current signatories to the club’s accounts are the Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer. Please take the time to think about your personal involvement in the club and the activities we take part in during the year. If you have taken your turn in the past at committee and management levels, we thank you for your contribution. If you are a newer member, maybe you are ready to step up and be a little more actively involved. It certainly is a good way to get to know people and feel even more part of the club. There is no getting away from it, old cars have a certain fascination for us (members and owners) and helping to run our local Vintage Car Club adds to this interest. You are welcome to come and observe a committee meeting (3rd Wednesday of the month), or to talk these roles through with a committee member. Kathleen Perry Secretary

I am wondering if you could put the following cars out to your members. These are from my Dad's estate and we are looking for offers to present to the trustees to be considered. If they like to contact myself on 0274 641 910 or 03 4811 555 (Dunedin) or shellyv37@gmail.com Austin Opal - convertible red one - disrepair - needs everything done, but more than likely all the parts are there - untouched other than 2x moves in the last 25 years. Very rare model - possibly one of only 2-3 in NZ. Austin Big 7 - The grey undercoated vehicle. Panel beating done and body ready to go onto the sandblasted and painted chassis (but this has been left outside) - this work potentially was done 10 years ago. There is also another chassis. Austin 10 - Green one, rego on hold. Vehicle was going but motor was smoking so it was taken out. Old motor there plus another new one - but both are in parts. Awaiting a mechanic to check if all parts are there and right measurements. Otherwise this vehicle is in great condition. There are plenty of parts also, vehicles will come all the parts that are there for them (if you can identify them). Shelly Vince

Twelve people assembled on Thursday for the run to Moeraki Boulders Cafe . They were :- Gilbert and Maureen , Barbara and Bruce , Charlie and Mary , Geoff and Partner, John and Jo , Margaret and Verna , Our run took us through Thousand Acre Rd, Kakanui to State Highway 1 ,( near the Mill House ), through Hampden to the Moeraki Boulders Cafe . With the nasty weather predicted we were pleased to be under cover in the cafe , where there was a good selection of food to choose from in the cabinets for afternoon tea . It was super to look across at the Moeraki settlement and to watch the discoloured sea after the recent rain we had experienced as the currents took the discolouration out further . Gilbert Ellery began the proceedings with a moments silence for Colin Jack ,who died a few days ago . We will miss Colin’s work with the camera at these functions and his happy smile. Hopefully ,his wife Rosemary and Trixie the dog will continue to come on our outings. Thank you all for coming. Verna Chambers

FAIRLIE NEW YEAR’S DAY 2021 PARADE Despite a rather foreboding weather forecast, three members and their respective ‘other half’s headed to Fairlie on New Year’s Day to participate in the town’s annual parade organised by the Fairlie Heritage Museum committee. John Gayle in a hard top, Derek Brehaut in a soft top and Will Hearne driving a no top. It’s a great run, especially when you get off the main road just before Pareora and head inland. Quieter roads and beautiful farmland all the way. The Timaru Herald reported an estimated crowd of 4000, and more than 130 entries being predominantly vintage cars, tractors, several large trucks, an army tank and marine carrier. Last year’s run was in the middle of the Australia Bush fires and the sky was a pinky colour all day with the smoke filtering out the sun. This year, the sky was overcast and threatened to rain but obligingly held off till after the parade and the temperature was very pleasant. You know, like porridge – not too hot, not too cold.

Adventures of an Old Restorer. Rebuilding a 1936 Vauxhall/Bedford 14hp pickup. Another new year, where does the time go? I have not done as much as I would have liked on my Vauxhall/Bedford as I have been working with Derek building a wall, not for Trump, but for the new Library, we managed to finish it last weekend, we now have to put up the gib-board on the other three walls. The truck is coming along fine, the engine head was taken into Heads Off for seating all the valves and now the engine has been reassembled, I am going to replace the frost plugs before I put it back in place, I found that the block was in better condition than I thought, I replaced the head temporarily with the old head gasket, and with the help of Derek's compression gauge I found that all pistons were around the same reading which was 12 psi below what they should be new, and whilst I was checking the compressions I also put in the oil pressure gauge this was reading 75psi on battery turn over, so it was decided to leave the block as is. The brake shoe springs have at last arrived from Australia so I will be able to finish the front brakes, you can find the proper parts if you look far afield, the only trouble with that is postage!! All the best, Clive.

Windsor Rally 2020

Club Rooms Upgrade As of going to print work on the club rooms upgrade has carried on from the demolition of the club captain’s room. The club captain’s door has been removed and the door way framed and gibed ready for gib stopping and painting. The bottom ¾ of the Library wall has been dismantled and new wall built and lined with custom board donated by Tony Hales. This wall is now supported by two beams running from the front wall. Old wiring not required has been removed and new wiring installed for the library including new lights on beams.

Prior to our February club night it is hoped the library will be fully gibed ready to be stopped and painted. The committee has approved the plan going forward to paint both the Library and the main meeting area, Remove the old carpet and install new carpet throughout the library and meeting area. This will then allow us to complete the library freeing up space to complete the remainder of our upgrade plan.
