AlthoughStuartLindhasofferedtotakeoversomeofRob’sworkhewouldlike assistancefromacoupleofhelperswhocouldputinahalfdayeachmonthata timewhichisconvenienttothem.

Thiswouldbetoassistwithcarryingoutrepairsasrequired. Itwouldbeidealforanymemberwhohasgeneralhandymanskills,andifyouhave buildingor plumbing skills thenthiswouldbe abonus.

Hello everyone, Howtimeflies.Thiswillbethelastoneoftheseinmy currentroleasChairman. TheConstitutionforourbranch statesthatIcanonlydothreeyearsconsecutively. Forthe secondyearinarowwehavealltheCommitteepositionsfull wellbeforetheAGMbutifanyonewantstostandfora positionwewouldhaveavoteonthenight,thishadn’t happenedinmanyyears!! Currentlythebranchhasaround 180membersthisfigureisfantasticconsideringitwas around150whenIputmyhanduptobechairmananditwouldbegreattoseethis trendcontinue.

TheSundayJauntwasagreatdriveoutthebackofMartonthenupoverMtCurlback throughHalcombeforapleasanteveningattheClubRooms

Unfortunatelywedidn’thaveanyhelperscomeforwardtohelpStuartLindwiththe finishingoftheLibraryprojectsowewilltryagainbutputadateouttheretogetsome interest.

ThenextbigeventisTheHighlandFlingonthe27/28thofApril.Atthemomentwe have107entriesfrom28differentbranchescomingtoexperiencethebestmotoring roadsinthecountryandafewfarms.

IfanyonewantstocomeandseethecarspopouttotheClubRoomsonthe28thfrom about1pmonwardsbutpleasecomeinthroughthepartsshedgateandparkthere.

CLUB CAPTAIN’S CORNER - GLYN CLEMENTS

Youcan“teachanolddognewtricks”asprovenrecently whenI hadthepleasureofbeinginvolvedinwoodenwheelmaking,up attheJensenFarminApiti.VernaskedifIwouldliketohelp withadayofbendingwoodenfelloesforthewheelsofafew Veterans.AyoungchapandhismatecameupfromMasterton andwebentfelloesfortheVeteranSCATandDaimler,plusthere werefelloestodoforaVeteran, Cadillac,DeDionandFord ModelTforotherpeople.Inall,36weredoneduringtheday.Atrulyinterestingand enjoyableday.Quitephysical,sotheAntiFlammegotsomeapplicationoverthefollowing dayorso.ThanksVernforagreatdayout!

Greatturnoutforthe“Long”SundayJaunton7thApril.Justover80milesdidn’tdetera fieldof17carswhoenjoyedtherunoutthebackofMartonandoverMtCurl(justrecently sealed,althoughthegravelroadsignsarestillup),beforeendingupattheClubRooms. I’vedoneaCalendarofEventsthroughtotheendoftheyear,plusasmalllistof neighbouringBrancheventswecaneasilyattend.

ThePostEraRallyEntryFormsareinthisissueandit'safulldayoutofaround150miles. LunchwillbeattheCheltyHotelasit'sgettingabitcolder(andcouldwellbewet),sowe willforgotheusualpicniclunchoptionuntilthewarmerweatherreturns.

ThisismylastClubCaptain’sCornerasIwillbestandingdownattheAGMasI’vebecome heavilyinvolvedataNationallevelwithtakingontheNorthIslandClubCaptain’sposition. Mythanksforallyoursupportoverthepast2years.Myreplacementwillbenostranger toyouall,soyouwillbeinsafehandsgoingforward!

CathandIwillstillorganisetheMotorcycleRallyandourfamous“Overnighters”in November.

Thiswreckdemolishedthefrontendofa1947Cadillac62sedan.Noticetheaccessoryspot-lampandtheoutside sunvisor.Rectangularfrontfoglampswerealsooptionalequipment.Thiscarwasoneof25,834built.

Smashed-up1947Chevrolethasadifferent‘slant’onlife,followingaseverefrontendcollision.Thefour-passenger coupelookslikeitwasinrealgoodshapebeforetheaccident.However,itprobablywoundupinasalvageyard, ratherthanabodyrepairshop.ItisaStylemastermodel.

Launchedveryslightlyearlierthan theHeinkelKabine,theKR175had aFichtel&Sachs single-cylinder engineofalmostexactlythesame capacity(173cc)andverysimilar power.

Estimatesofitspreciseoutputvary between9.0and9.5bhp,whichwe reckoniscloseenoughtodeclarea three-waytiewiththeCitroënand Heinkelunits.

ThelaterKR200hada191ccengine,againsuppliedbyFichtel&Sachs,which produced10bhp.

ThisyearwedecidedtodotheMaungaMoanarallyinNewPlymouth.Anotheroneof thoserallieswehadnevergotaroundtodoingforvariousreasons.

ComeEasterFriday,theHumberwasloadedandoffwesetforNewPlymouth.Avery nicerun,notmuchtrafficandaswegotclosertoNewPlymouth,lotsofpassinglanes.

Arrivedsafelyatthehotel,unpackedandhadtimeforacuppabeforeheading downstairstogetrallypacksandmeetsomeofthecontestants.

CaughtupwithfriendsfromAucklandandWaikatoclubsbeforeadjourningtothebar foroneortwobeveragesandmorecatchingup.

Saturdaymorningwasclearbutwithacoldishwind.40carsassembledinthehotel carparkfortherun.ManawatuwasrepresentedbyGlynandCathClements,Bruce HuttonandShonaAshton,andourselves.

WeleftthehotelcarparkandjostledourwaythroughNewPlymouthstrafficforabout 5minutesuntilwewereintheoutersuburbsandintoruralcountryside.Oneofthe goodthingsaboutmanythesmallercitiesandtownsinthelowernorthislandisthatit isarelativelyshortdrivetoescapetheurbanstreetsandgetintotheslowerpaced ruralroads.TheruntookustothewestofMountEgmonttoPukeitiandthenonto Kapongaforlunchandtheendoftherally,ajourneyofnearly80milestakingnearly 3hours.Itwasalovelydrivethroughthelocalcountrysideandnotmuchtrafficapart fromtheunusualnumberofoldcars.

ThelocalSwissClubputonanamazinglunch.Wehadbroughtourownbutthose whohadpurchasedlunchsaidittastedasgoodasitlookedandtherewasplentyfor everyone.

Theafternoonwasfreeforustovisitthelocalattractionsandthenheadbacktoour accommodation.WecalledinattheTaranakiAviationTransport&Technology Museumonthewayback.Veryinterestingplace.

Aftercleaningupandchangeofclothes,itwasbackdowntothebarforafewmore drinksandthenofftodinner.Again,awonderfulmeal,putonbytheNewPlymouth Internationalhotel.

Thenwestartedwiththemoreformalpartoftheevening.GlyndonnedhisNorth IslandClubCaptainshatandpresented250-yearbadgesand225-yearbadges.It wasreallyinterestingtohearwhatthe50-yearrecipientshaddoneintheirtimewith theclub.

Thenitwasontopresentationoftrophiesfortherally.

Whenitcametoourclass,PostWarVehicles,weweresurprisedwhenournamewas

calledoutfor1st place.Timingisnotsomethingweareparticularlyaccurateat.We had3otherentrantsatourtablefromAuckland.AllbutIgotatleastaplacing. Aprettygoodhaulforthetablewethought.

Thenwegotcalledupfor1st overall,1st navigatorandHighestPlacedOverallTwo PersonTeam.Thelastonewasforthoseteamsthatonlyhadtwocrewinthecari.e. noextrahelpersinthebackseat.

Afteralltheexcitement,itwasofftobedandthenanuneventfulrunhomethe followingday.

Wehadawonderfulweekendandarelookingforwardtonextyear’sone.Nextyear willbethe60th MaungaMoana.Itwouldbegoodtoseeabiggercontingentfrom Manawatutohelpthemcelebrate.Afterallitisonly3½hoursaway.

Heretheyare...the ManawatuBranch"Pot Hunters"KenandAnnette Foot.

Theyhadawonderfultime EasterWeekendatthe MaungaMoanaRallyin NewPlymouthtakingout thetopprizes!

TheSecretary’sScribblesslotintheSept2023 Tourermadeusawarethatanothervehiclehad arrivedintheClementsStable,andat theAprilclub nightitwaswaitinginthemainhall tobeviewed.

Glyngavethosewhoattendedclubnightan outline ofthebackgroundofthevehicle -a1928Chevrolet NationalAB.Itwasthelastofthe4-cylinder engines,andthefirstyearfor4-wheelbrakes.

WhenGlynacquired theChev,ithadbeen90% restoredbyBillTimminsofPalmerstonNorth.

GlynboughtitinJune oflastyearandconvertedthe bodyfromtheopensidedeliveryvanstyletothe pickup.Hecompletedtheinterior, thengottheVIN, WOFandregistrationsortedinFebruary,andthis year itistobeastarterintheHighlandFling.

Thismodelindeliblyimprintedinthelayman'smindasthearchetype ofthe Vintagesportscar,hadalong-stroke(80x149mm)single overheadcamengine withfixedheadanddualmagnetoignition developingabout70brakehorsepowerit'searly form.

Itwasitsbestinlongdistanceevents,andpioneeredtheseriesofvictoriesatLeMans thatlasteduntil1930.Upto192916223-litresweremade.1924sawtheintroduction offrontwheelbrakesandalsotheinfamoussportsfour-seater‘SpeedModel’by VandenPlas.Bentleysarepopularlyknownbythecoloursoftheenamelontheir radiatorbadges-‘RedLabel’signifyingaSpeedModelshort-chassis3-litre,‘BlueLabel’ theearlyshort,andlongchassiswhichcouldandsometimesdidcarrylimousine coachwork,and‘GreenLabel’,aspecialshort100mphtypewhichwasmadeinvery smallnumbers.

In1926thecompanymadeabidforthecarriagetradeabig6½-litresixonsimilar lines.Achassiscost£1,450,buttheBentleyimagemadenoimpressioninthismarket. However,themodelwasdevelopedintothe180-brakehorsepower‘Speed6’of1929, consideredbymanytobethebesttheold-schoolBentleys.

In1927the3-litrewasdevelopedintothe 4½-litre,stillwith4cylinders,butwitha 100bhp enginewhichwasgiving130 brakehorsepower bythetimeproduction ended.

This admirablecarcouldexceed90miles perhourinstandardform. A superchargedversionwaslisted1930;it had182brakehorsepower,anddidnot havetheapprovalofBentleyhimself,but itwasanexcellent ifthirstyroadcar.

1929‘Blower’Bentley Bentleyfinanceswerealwaysshaky,andevenWoolfBarnato’saidof1927didnotlast long;thecompanywentdownintheearlysummer1931totheaccompanimentofa splendidgesture-a220brakehorsepowerohc8-litresix,madeintwowheelbase lengths,12feetand13feet.

Only100oftheseweremade,plus50examplesofaratheruninspiredinletover exhaustvalve4-litrecar.

Napiermadeanunsuccessfulbidfortheassetsofthecompany,butwerebeatenby Rolls-Royce,whointroducedtheirversionoftheBentleyatOlympiain1933.Thiswas anentirelydifferenttype,basedonDerby'scontemporary3.7-litreoverheadvalve push-rod’20-25’.Ithadafour-speedsynchromeshgearbox,Rolls-Royceservobrakes, andsoldfor£1,460poundswithsaloonbodywork.Inthisform,itcouldreach90miles anhour andmeritedit's slogan ‘Thesilentsports car”.By1936ithadgrown intoa 4½-litre,the increaseofcapacitybeing necessitatedtherising weightofthe bespoke coachwork.Anoverdrive gearboxwasstandardised in1939,andthe1940Mk Vhad independentfront suspension,thoughonlya handfulweremade becauseofthewar.

1939Bentley4½litreoverdrivepillarlessCoupe unchangedat4,257ccin1946,butindependentfrontsuspensionwasstandard,and Bentley,likeRolls-Royce,hadgoneovertoInletoverexhaustvalves.

Pricesrosefrom£2,997to£4,474in1951forthestandardsteelsaloon,thefirstRollsRoyceproducttohavearegularseries-producedbody.

ThereafterRolls-RoyceandBentleyidentitiesmerged,thoughin1952therewasa special‘Continental’versionofthelatterwithfastback2-doorsaloonbodybyH.J. Mullinerwhichgave120mphona3.077:1topgear.Capacitywentupto4.6-litresin 1952and4.9-litresin1956.Automatictransmissions,alreadyoptional,became standardthatyear;powerassistedsteeringandairconditioningfollowedin1957,and for1960theoldsixatlonglastgavewaytoa6.2-litreV-8withfulloverheadvalves, bywhichtimeonlytheradiatorstyledistinguishedonemakefromtheother.The ‘Continental’withseparatechassiswasdiscontinuedattheendof1966;1982Bentleys weretheMulsanne(forallitsnameonlyaRollsRoyceSilverSpirit)inshortwheelbase forms,andtheCornicheconvertible:eventhepricedifferentialbetweenthetwomakes hadgone.
