Condolences

ONDOLENCES

It is with much sadness that the Manawatu Branch notes the passing of Gladys Haycock and Elizabeth Livingston. The branch extends its sympathies to their husbands and families at this time.

Gladys Eva HAYCOCK

Gladys passed away on 27th May 2021 aged 78 years. She was actively involved with the Vintage Car Club having joined the VCC as a member in 1981. She attended numerous club events with her husband Len, and also on many occasions with her children and grandchildren.

We were invited to attend the private funeral service of Gladys Haycock at Beauchamp Funeral Chapel in Marton. With Gladys never wanting any fuss made of her she was laid to rest in a white painted casket. The service was conducted by Beauchamp’s Funeral director who spoke of Gladys’ life being part of a large family living at Nightcaps in Southland. From there she started working in her teens and ended up working at the Criterion Hotel in Bulls. Here Gladys and Len met, married and lived for the rest of their lives in Bulls. From the small group gathered eulogies were given and then the offer was made for anyone gathered to write a farewell message on the casket which was accepted by many. Len and Gladys’ Peugeot 504 Famille (Station Wagon) was used as the hearse to carry Gladys on her last ride to the Clifton Cemetery in Bulls. En-route from Marton to the cemetery Len and Tony played some of Gladys’ favourite music blaring from the car radio. A circuit of the milk tanker track was included on the trip. At the cemetery the music continued out the back of the hearse.

Gladys was then taken to the grave site where the committal service was held and where she now rests.

Rest in Peace.

Elizabeth Helen LIVINGSTON

Liz was born on 29th April 1955 and passed away on 24th May 2021. She was married to David for over 45 years. David won her heart in 1972 and one of the things that wooed her was his flash car (plus his many other fine attributes)! They had two sons, Peter and Andrew. From early on, vintage cars were a big part of Liz and Dave’s life. She loved the International Rallies they attended and enjoyed visiting the interesting places that one would not normally have the chance to see during the many runs over the years. Their Austin 12/6 has been in the family for many years. David restored this when the kids were young so it is very much part of the family. Liz drove this car many times and even drove at a wedding or two for David! Also in their fleet is the 1927 Paige that is well known to club members, plus there were other cars over the years. Liz had an outstanding career at Woodlands where she worked for 26 years, until her recent retirement, starting in the kitchen and soon becoming a trained Diversional Therapist. She was greatly admired and loved by the hundreds of people she helped during that time. Early on in their marriage, it was clear to David that Liz had a wish to visit Scotland and this wish was able to become a reality for them just a couple of years ago while she enjoyed reasonably good health. Liz was a quiet, strong and very positive person. She was David’s rock as he was hers and will be greatly missed, not only by David, her sons Andrew and Peter, and other family members including her dad and sister, but by the many friends she had, far and wide. May she rest in peace.
