Chairman’s Report

This is my first report as Chairman, so here goes.

To everyone who has taken on a position in the Gore branch, a great big thank you.

Some of you are new, some have continued in the same position and some have moved to a new job, again thank you all. We still need a Club Captain to co-ordinate the rallies over the next year. We have a committee of 4 to assist the Club Captain so it shouldn’t be too much of a challenge. If anyone feels theycan help, give me a call or come along to the next meeting and let us know.

I think that subs and levies will be coming up for review shortly, so something to think about over the next few weeks.

3

From the Editor’s Keyboard

Thank you for entrusting The Wiper to my tender care again, you know what to expect, another year of me pestering you for stories. The best way to avoid that is to do what most of this month’s contributors did and send me something without being asked!

As with last month, the Branch AGM features strongly in this issue. There is also a bit more in the way of “catching up” going on. Murray Proctor tells us about the combined Clearwater Capers and Frank Robson Memorial Run, Bryan & Frances Neilson have contributed a report on the May Tuesday Ramble and the “Edendale Cooks” have been on quite an extensive four-wheel-drive adventure.

I have also included the latest update on the 2026 Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring for the benefit of those of you who will not have received it by email – and don’t forget the branch’s Annual Dinner and Prize-giving on Saturday the 6th July.

Finally, if you have taken on a role for the branch this year, please check your details on the inside front cover and let me know as soon as possible if anything needs to be corrected. Thank you!

Military Humour

Many years ago, while working at a petrol station on an Army camp, we had a bomb disposal team to a suspect car. The team leader was wearing a T-shirt with "I'm a Bomb Disposal Expert" on the front and "If you see me running try to keep up" on the back.

As far as military T-shirts go, I think the best I've ever seen was a guy I met at work for the first time who had a maroon T-shirt with "God was a paratrooper" on the front. So I'm thinking 'Ah, ex-para', until he turned around and I saw "He failed the Commando tests" on the back!

On the same theme, I knew a combat medic who had a T-shirt that said 'All bleeding stops, eventually'.

& Clearwater Capers Runs

(Frank Robson Run for Veteran & Vintage Cars, Clearwater Capers for all other classes)

Drew the curtains on the 14th April to a pea souper and thought “bugger, this is going to be good”. I’d washed the car earlier in the week but I still had to fuel it, so after taking it to the service station in the fog I found that washing was a wasteof mytime. I’dnever realisedhowmuch, Iguess, soot comes with fog. The car looked like I’d driven on dirty roads.

Because our grandson, Pilot, was coming with us, I had to fit the car safety seat. This is a bit difficult in an older car with static seat belts. It’s a bit of amission to get thebelt tension right andthebackseats areflat so thesafety seat tends to rock from side to side a bit.

Anyway, 1.00pm and the fog’s gone, lots of sun, no wind and 22 cars, of whichsix wereeligiblefortheFrankRobson Runand 16fortheClearwater Capers, so a great turnout. Greg Elder gave a pre-rally briefing telling us that if at any time we found ourselves on gravel roads then we were lost.

15
Some of the entrants at the start, including the Model T driven by Paul Katon

The rally got under way with three questions (to space out the cars) and we nominatedourown speed,so awaywe went, headingintotown and crossed the bridge going on to Knapdale via Woolwich Street. Some of the older members will remember Woolwich Street was the location of our original Branch clubrooms. At the Knapdale crossroads we turned left travelling a few miles before turning right onto State Highway94.We motored through Mandeville turning on to Waimea Valley Road then right at Nine Mile Road. From here we meandered through some of the back roads, past the Balfour lime works and on to Balfour township. Here we crossed State Highway 94 to Terrace Road, turned right to get back to State Highway 94 and on to the green letterbox at Greg’s.

Paul Katon’s Model T at the finish – can you spot the difference from when it started?

We checked in and parked along the hedge, had a cuppa in brilliant sunshine and checked out Greg’s garages and workshop.

16

Greg’s latest restoration (story to follow soon!)

Is Greg a closet moped enthusiast?!

17

Is this the next in line for Greg’s handiwork?

Relaxing in the sunshine

Afternoon tea over, Greg called us together and announced the winners.

18

They were:

Frank Robson Run Clearwater Capers

1st - John Tremaine (1930 FordA) 1st - Murray Proctor (1964 Rover P5)

2nd - Paul Katon (1912 Ford T) 2nd - Hartley Hay (1935 Ford V8)

3rd - Katy Parish (1923 Bentley) 3rd - Starr McDougall (1962 MGA)

The old and the new, Greg’s 2018 Lexus keeping an eye on some of the participants

Another great run Greg, good roads and travelling through some of our most beautiful countryside, enjoying the day with like-minded friends.

Hard to find a better way to fill in a Sunday.

Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring 2026

Update May 2024

Planning is progressing quietly but steadily for the festival in 2026 and the event continues to take shape.

Who’s coming to the Vero?

We’ve now received 701 registrations of interest. Based on what we know from the survey sent out to VCC members that means approximately 735 cars and 1,435 participants if everyone signed up comes along.

Overseas entrants:

We now have indications from approximately 20 overseas entrants keen to come and we believe this number will continue to grow.About half of that number have enquired about loan cars to enable them to take part.

If you would be prepared to loan a vehicle please let us know and we can set up a register of available vehicles. Please email Karen at festivalsecretary@vcc.org.nz

For the overseas entrants intending to bring their own vehicle we are pulling together a “How to Guide” which we hope will smooth the process.

Accommodation:

We’vehadanumberofenquiriesaboutaccommodation. We’retalkingwith accommodation providers to see if we can get discounts for rally entrants and hopefully we will have a full list out soon. For those of you who would like to get familiar with what is on offer, the festival headquarters will be at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson, so search near there for the closest places to stay. For those wanting to camp, the two closest sites will be the Top 10 Holiday Park in Vanguard Street, and the Tāhunanui Beach Holiday Park.

We are also working on providing a motorhome park and/or trailer park for participants. We’ll keep you updated on that too.

26

Venue:

As mentioned above the festival headquarters and the location of most of the evening social events is the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson City. It’s a short walk to Nelson’s main street and a wide choice of accommodation. Earlier this month our festival organising committee visited with our caterer to get a good handle on the venue and how we can use it. We’ve sketched out a plan for feeding and entertaining everyone who wants to come along including a plan to involve more participants in the grand finale evening. More details to come.

Restoring a vehicle with the Vero as a deadline?

If you’re like one of our committee and have set the Vero IFHM as a deadline to have your vehicle complete, then please let us know. We’d like to feature a few people’s restoration journeys to the Vero (email Mike at festivalcomms@vcc.org.nz). Here’s to easy to find parts and few skinned knuckles to those working on their restorations.

Were you at the 1972 International Rally?

We’re also keen to hear from anyone who took part in the 1972 rally in Nelson - especially if you have photos and stories from the event to share (email Mike at festivalcomms@vcc.org.nz).

Registrations of interest:

If you’re getting this directly you’re already signed up - thank you!

If you’ve had a friend forward it to you and you want to be kept up to date leading up to the event please sign up at www.historicmotoring.org.nzremember to tick the “Sign me up for the newsletter!” box otherwise we can’t send you updates.

Best regards,

In New Zealand History This Month

First woman graduates from a New Zealand university 11 July 1877

Kate Edger became the first woman in New Zealand to gain a university degree and the first woman in the British Empire to earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA). In 1882 she became the first principal of Nelson College for Girls.

Other pioneering New Zealand woman graduates soon followed. Helen Connon, Canterbury College’s first female student, graduated with a BA in 1880 and became the first woman in the Empire to gain an Honours degree in 1881. New Zealand’s first woman lawyer, Ethel Benjamin, graduated from the University of Otago’s Law School in 1898.

Stella Henderson achieved unusual academic distinction for a 19th-century woman, gaining a BA with a special focus on political science, a Masters of Arts (MA) with first-class honours in English and Latin, and completing the requirements for a Bachelor of Laws during the 1890s.

Elizabeth Gregory graduated Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in biochemistry at University College, London, in 1932. She received an honorary Doctorate of Laws (LLD) in 1967 – the first New Zealand woman graduate to be so honoured.

May Tuesday Ramble

The 28th May was a perfect day for a Ramble. About nine cars set out for Mossburn. Lunch at the Railway Hotel with one meet up and the “late” Horrells joining us there. We all got a bar tab ready to order our lunch. Menus on the tables, what a selection there was, if you left hungry that was your fault. The dessert menu had a great selection too, plus cream and ice cream. Lots of photos on the walls.

LeavingMossburnwedrovebackdowntheroad, turningbeforethebridge, meeting up with at least one more car at Daryl Paskell’s fishing museum.

Daryl opening up the museum

This was amazing. A great collection of rods, reels, fishing flies, fish sculptures made out of wood, many paintings and photos. The painting of a man waiting for his Thermette to boil was a favourite.

Daryl your museum is a credit to you, well worth a visit.

Acoffee in Lumsden and on home.

Thank you Gerry, a great day out.

From the Editor’s Joke Book

His wife decided to become a whisky-maker, and he loved her still.

“But why?” the man exclaimed to the vet when she insisted she had to put his dog down.

“Because he’s heavy,” the vet explained.

“Doc, I can’t stop singing ‘What’s New, Pussycat?’”

“Sounds like you’ve got Tom Jones Syndrome.”

“Is it common?”

“It’s not unusual.”

For a high school dance, the Head Boy asked out the girl he liked.

To get flowers for her, he had to stand in a line outside the florist for an hour. To make things worse, he had to wait another hour in a line outside the tuxedo shop.

Finally, he goes to the dance with the girl.

The girl wanted to have some apple punch so the boy went to get it, but to his surprise, there was no punch line.

12 July

The unusual connection between the Republic of Kiribati and Wales. 12th July is the National Day of the Republic of Kiribati, commemorating the day in 1979 that the group of Pacific coral islands gained its independence from the United Kingdom.

They were previously named the Gilbert Islands after Thomas Gilbert, the captain of one of the ships of the First Fleet, who encountered the islands on his return journey from carrying convicts to Botany Bay in 1788.

The Kiribati honorary consulate of the United Kingdom is the only official representation of Kirbati in Europe and has been located since 1996 in the home of Michael Walsh in Llanddewi Rhydderch, 4 miles east of Abergavenny. Between 1971 and 1976, Michael worked as an economic adviser to the Kirbati government, during which time he married a Kiribati woman, Nei Rotee.

What We Did On Our Holidays:

We Did a 4-WD Thing

After many years of owning four-wheel-drives and only using them to go fishing, tow the caravan and take the trailer to the tip, Tim, a friend from school, and I decided to see how far we could go on the road less-travelled with Ryder navigating (excellently) as usual. We planned a couple of days of exploring in Central Otago using as many tracks and gravel roads as possible. We planned to start by driving through the Nevis Valley to Alexandra via Clyde and spending a second day exploring the Oteake Conservation Reserve, which is more or less between Alexandra and Ranfurly.

The convoy

The day we chose to leave was the day a cold front was due to come through, we stayed in front of it until Garston. We turned off to get onto the Nevis Road and the first raindrops started to fall as we drove up the road. By the time we got to the Garston Ski Hut, it was snowing.

37

Tim knew the owner of the Station so we decided some local knowledge was the order of the day. After a quick phone call we decided to cut our losses and drive in from the Bannockburn end as the weather was more settled.Weshallreturnanddrivetheentirelengthanotherday. After getting down into the valley and splashing our way through puddles and fords, we explored the ruins and some of the cribs that still remained and scoped the hills for any free-range venison. We saw nothing, so we headed out and drove another trail that brings you down behind Clyde. If you were on the Combined Rally last year, organised by the Central Otago Branch, you would recognise it.

An old cottage in the Nevis Valley

We headed down intoAlexandra, found our bed for the night, organised tea and whiled away the evening.

We awoke the next morning to snow on the hills and the promise of a beautiful Otago day. After breakfast we refuelled the Prado, and the chillybin with our lunch and snacks for the day, and headed out. Our first track for the day was on to Wireyards Hut in the Oteake Conservation Reserve.

38

We passed a couple of signs on the wayin that gave food for thought: “This track should be used by experienced 4-wheel drivers”. We’ve had an experience, that should do, we thought. And the other one that was more interesting was “Don’t venture off the track. Beware of unexploded ordnance”. Hunting deer with grenades, why didn’t we think of that?

We started the climb, very quickly we were in low range and first gear and climbing a track that didn’t look that steep from the bottom. After about 15 minutes of this Ryder asked “What speed are we going?” “Don’t know” was the answer as the speedo wasn’t registering, we were going that slow. We kept this up for about an hour and then decided lunch was the order of the day and maybe trying another track.

39

After a consult with Tim, we turned the trucks around and drove down the mountain (hill).

We spent the afternoon driving some backcountry trails and ended up at FallsDam (nearSt Bathans).Dadtooklotsofphotosandwethencontinued exploring the countryside. After a few fords we found ourselves at Homestead Campsite (same area) and had a look around the hut and played a touch of Frisbee.

A ford on the Nevis Road

We then continued on to St Bathans, to have a stop for a coffee and hot chocolate at the Vulcan Hotel. (Did you know that they have a resident ghost?) Afterwards we headed over to the cliffs beside the hotel to soak in the beauty of Blue Lake.

We then began our way home through Alexandra which is where we left Tim to drop his friend off at his vehicle.

All in all it was a fantastic two days, 10/10 would recommend.

Quite a Coincidence!

A 90-year-old veteran was talking about his RAF days. He was brought up near Farnborough and got posted to the experimental unit at RAF Martlesham Heath, near Ipswich, where he worked on the "little" Vulcans - the Avro 707, small-scale test aircraft.

Then

“In October 1957 I was sent to Christmas Island. One day a big white Vulcan arrived, as soon as she landed, she was covered in screening and then eventually taxied back up to where we were. Lo and behold, when the aircrew got out, the pilot got out and he looked over and said “Hello Cliff what are you doing here!” I told him I lived here. He was my neighbour from home and lived about four doors down the road from me.
