Chairman’s Report Hi again, well Christmas is almost here so hope everyone has a good time catching up with family and friends over the break. I would like to thank Owen & Lorraine for putting on another great P60/80 Run on the 10th November. Report is on page 19. The paddock is getting cut for silage anytime now so that will tidy that up again. The new light bulbs have been put in the Museum which has brightened it up a lot. Thanks Peter Jacob, Colin Sweetman and Les Bennett for doing this. Club Night was at Alan McCormick’s car collection in town on the 21st November with another good turnout, it's good to see people coming to these Club nights. Report and photos in next month's Blowout. There will be no Club Night in December as everyone is busy. Don’t forget New Years' Day Run and BBQ at Domain, more on page 10. Don’t forget Annual Rally Entry Form due by 18th January to Peter Lambie. See page16 for details and cost of dinner held afterwards Craig & I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and look forward to more happy & safe motoring events in 2020. That’s about it from me for this year Cheers Trevor Begg. 5

If you haven't received one, and have paid, please contact me asap so that we can get this sorted for you. Veteran and Vintage Picnic Sunday 1st December This years picnic will be at a venue yet to be advised but will take the form of a 1920s country picnic and is intended for vehicles of the veteran and vintage classes only (1895 to 1931) Period dress and picnic accessories are requested but are optional. Meet at:

Tinwald Domain, Maronan Road at 11.00am For information contact David or Marion Oakley, 03 308 7323 or 021 370 956 This event will be followed by a Barbeque at the Club grounds. All members are invited to join in for the Xmas Tea, after 4pm. Please bring salads to share. BBQ sausages supplied.

NO DESSERTS PLEASE. 7

Back Country Excursion 18th January 2020 This excursion which is intended for veteran vehicles only, will travel from Hawarden to Whitnow Station and return to Hawarden. The total distance travelled will be 62 kms, which includes 46 kms of good unsealed road. There are no fords on the road. The unsealed portion of the road carries very little traffic as it is only used for access to various stations and is mildly challenging as it includes hills. A backup vehicle and trailer will be provided. Entrants will require a packed lunch. Road speeds on the unsealed portion of the road are envisaged to be low in order to prevent stone chips to paintwork, and to allow an enjoyable veteran motoring experience. Meet at Hawarden at the Resene paint shop car park, Hawarden Whakaari Rd, at 10.00 am. If the weather is unsuitable the event will be postponed. Space is available for parking trailers at the venue. If you wish to attend or for information please contact

David and Marion Oakley, Ph 021 370 956 or 03 308 7323 E: d.oakley@xtra.co.nz

how long a previous worker on my spare back axle spent trying to undo this hub nut with his great big hammer and a chisel ‌. before he realised that it was a left hand thread? 8

SOME DAYS I AMAZE MYSELF, OTHER DAYS I LOOK FOR MY PHONE WHILE I’M HOLDING IT MY WIFE JUST STOPPED AND SAID ‘ YOU WEREN’T EVEN LISTENING, WERE YOU?’ I THOUGHT… ‘THAT’S A PRETTY WEIRD WAY TO START A CONVERSATION.’ Editor’s Apology The dates on the Annual Rally Entry Form published last month had the closing date as Friday 18th January 2018. It should read:

Friday 17th January 2020. 10

Ashburton Spring Rally What a perfect day for a rally, blue sky and sunshine. This time I’m riding our 90 year old AJS up from Temuka so leave with plenty of time in hand and avoid the highway as much as possible which adds at least another 20 km each way. Riding into the Club grounds reveals a good muster of cars, bikes and commercials. The grounds and buildings looking really neat and tidy are a credit to the members who take care of this. After a cuppa and chat we were briefed by Club Captain Peter Lambie and as we left we went through the sneaky and devious field tests. One involving being asked to set a crescent to 24mm and then it was measured. Can’t believe how far out I was. Did Percy Ralston giving lollies to the judges have something to do with this. A brief tour through Tinwald and Ashburton was followed by an enjoyable run to Wakanui and Seafield and then on to Pendarves where Leonie and David Rollinson welcomed us to their farm where we had a very relaxed lunch. We were invited to take a look through the beautiful gardens and also offered the opportunity to take a peek in the farm sheds . Great to see examples of earlier Case and International tractors being well cared for and also the new machines that bear both of the previous manufacturers names, Case IH. This is clearly a very well run cropping operation. Leonie and David know what neat and tidy looks like. Thank you for allowing us to visit. The afternoon run took us to Dromore and Mitcham and then back to the Club rooms and the prize giving. Veteran Car Trophy. Marion and David Oakley. 1914 Rover Capon Memorial Trophy. Time trial. POST 60/80 CRUISE On Sunday 10th November we left the Ashburton Domain in Grant’s 1968 Rover coupe with approx. 33 other cars on a run organised by Owen and Lorraine Wilson. The run went up Mitchem Road and onto Thompsons Track to Rakaia, travelling over the bridge and turning towards Leeston. The rally’s first stop was at Leo Parnham’s farm, where a cuppa was enjoyed in a lovely sheltered garden, until Leo opened his large shed so we could view his very large interesting range of vintage and veteran vehicles. The shed was dismantled in Christchurch then rebuilt to house the large combine harvester, down one side of the shed was all the vintage tractors, approximately thirty tractors, some of which had been imported from the USA, whilst the rest were from around the South Island. The other side of the large shed housed vintage and veteran cars, this collection of roughly twenty-five cars mostly consisting of Fords. Upon leaving Leo Parnham’s property we travelled to Leeston and onto Rolleston where most of us enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Izone Café. After leaving Rolleston we travelled to Prebbleton to the home of the second shed to see a very impressive collection of cars belonging to Ant Hanning. The cars ranged from a 1907 model T Ford (one of only seven in the world) to modern day vehicles. Ant told us that one car, a 1934 Lincoln V12 cruised at 100kms very nicely, but consumed fuel at 33L/100km or to the oldies it was at 8 mile per gallon. He said that he would like to collect one Ford car for every year from 1907 to present day. At the completion of our visit everyone found their own way home or followed the instructions given. Thank you to these people for opening their sheds, I am sure everyone really appreciated it. A very lovely day was had by all and I would like to thank Owen and Lorraine for an enjoyable day out. Colin & Pauline Read "The committee would like to sincerely thank Owen and Lorraine Wilson for their time and effort in organising this run".

As I am lying around, pondering the problems of the world, I realise that at my age I don't really give a monkey’s anymore. If walking is good for your health, the postman would be immortal. A whale swims all day, only eats fish, drinks water, but is still fat. A rabbit runs and hops and only lives 5 years, while, A tortoise doesn't run and does mostly nothing, yet it lives for 150 years.

And you tell me to exercise?? I don't think so. 19
