Asbury Park High School Class of 1962

Welcome to Our 50th Reunion! The APHS Class of 1962 Reunion Committee welcomes you to our 50th Reunion and hopes you find it enjoyable, meaningful and memorable. Our 50th Reunion gives us a chance to enjoy each other’s company as well as celebrate who we were, who we’ve become, and what we hope to be, do, and accomplish going forward. Each of us in our own way has made our class as special as it is. We’re also here to honor and remember our 67 departed classmates listed and pictured in the In Memoriam section of this Yearbook. They each contributed much to our class. We miss them greatly and will never forget them. The Committee has produced this Yearbook and Classmate Directory to help classmates stay in touch with each other and to renew fond memories of our shared past. Thanks for this publication go to Steve Klitzman, our Communications and Yearbook Editor, and Vinnie Gorman, Webmaster of our terrific web site, www.APHS1962.com Due to your overwhelmingly positive response we plan to continue the web site well past the reunion. We encourage you to use it on a regular basis to post and read updated classmate news, communicate with old friends, and make new ones. Please also post on the site your reunion as well as family and personal pictures for all to see and enjoy. On behalf of the entire Reunion Committee, thank you for your support and participation. We wish you a wonderful weekend. And let’s look forward to reuniting again for our 55th Reunion in 2017!

In Memoriam

Peter Yopp

We Remember Them* In the rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them. In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, we remember them. In the opening of flower buds and in the rebirth of spring, we remember them. In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of summer, we remember them. In the rustling of leaves and in the beauty of autumn, we remember them. In the beginning of the year and when it ends, we remember them. When we are weary and in need of strength, we remember them. When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them. When we have joys we yearn to share, we remember them. So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now a part of us, as we remember them.

History and Background In the late 90's, Carl Williams, Mayor of Asbury Park and graduate of Asbury Park High School, conceived of a vehicle where the rich history of the high school and its graduates would be remembered and celebrated. Carl also saw this as an opportunity to introduce outstanding graduates to current high school students, enabling the students to observe first hand that success was indeed possible regardless of how difficult their backgrounds may be. Mayor Williams enlisted his friend, Judge Ira Kreizman, also an APHS graduate, and together they formed a committee to make Carl's dream a reality. The initial committee consisted of Williams and Kreizman, Sandy Armstead, the late Gladys Johnson, Henry Johnson, Oliver Jones, Janice Davis Keener, Lorraine Hartigan Nonnenberg, and Myrna Wright, the Parent/Community Coordinator at APHS. After all of the legal and accounting requirements for a non-profit corporation were met, and criteria for induction were determined, the first group of Hall of Famers was selected. The initial group was inducted on 4/11/03 before a sold out crowd at the Berkeley Carteret Hotel in Asbury Park. Earlier that day, many of the inductees met with students at the high school, sharing their paths to success. Each inductee into the Asbury Park High School Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame is honored with a plaque featuring a photo and brief career highlights. The plaques are mounted in the main corridor of the high school where they can be viewed by present day students who will hopefully be encouraged to emulate the success of prior students who came from similar backgrounds and overcame similar hardships.
