Historic Vineville Neighborhood Association

The Vineville Neighborhood Association is an active organization open to all residents of the Vineville Historic District and to anyone interested in the preservation of the area as an economic and social asset of Macon. Founded in 1978, the VNA was responsible for collecting the necessary data on neighborhood homes for consideration as a historic district by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood achieved this status in 1980.

WE CALLED HISTORIC MACON

The Stallings called Historic Macon and utilized tax credit consulting to upgrade their historic bungalow in the Vineville Historic District.

2571 Elizabeth Place Mark & Gale Walz

The original owner of this turn of the century cottage is uncertain, but the first resident listed in the Macon City Directory is Edward Hanson and his wife Clara. Edward was a purchasing agent for the Georgia Southern & Florida Railway, which ran between Macon, Valdosta and Jacksonville. In 1920 the Hansons sold the property to Thomas Crowley and his wife Mary. Mr. Crowley began as a modest traveling salesman, but by the time of his death in 1940, he was a well-known Macon businessman and Vice-President of the Nu-Icy Bottling Company. Nu-Icy still exists as Nu-Grape soda. Mary Crowley worked as a secretary and lived in the home until her own death in 1968. Oak floors and high coffered ceilings original to the home maintain the historic charm. The living room fireplace was modernized, but the bedroom fireplace retains its original tile. At an undetermined time, the side porch was enclosed and became a sunroom with access off the front room. In 1999 Mark and Gale Walz purchased the home and converted the enclosed sunroom into an artist’s studio for Gale. She began painting after they moved in their home. One of the Walz’s biggest projects in 2015 was renovating a bedroom into a much desired master bath with double sinks, a walk in closet and a beautiful tile shower. The kitchen update consisted of new stainless steel appliances and new counters that show off the original white porcelain sink. In their front bathroom they updated the cabinet sink by replacing it with an antique chest and a vessel sink which keep the old house charm. Most of the remarkable work was designed and either completed or supervised by Mark Walz. Mark and Gale spend a lot of time on their beautiful and spacious front porch with their dogs Annie and Calloway. They love the outdoors, and when they are not hiking in the mountains, they are outside on the porch relaxing.

323 Buford Place Susan Long & Jim Bodell

When Susan Long first looked at this 1920s Craftsman bungalow, she was immediately attracted to its large great room with a cathedral ceiling and beams. The home also features two front doors, a quirk no one has been able to explain. H.L. Moore, owner of a wholesale and retail grocery business on Third Street was the first owner of the house, followed a few years later by Theron W. Hawkes, president of Merchants and Mechanics Bank. Then came Episcopalian minister Donald G. Mitchell, Jr., who added the built-in bookcases in the living room and finished the attic as a playroom for his daughter. Susan and her husband Jim Bodell have completed several extensive remodeling projects since occupying the house. They replaced a small bathroom addition and walk-in closet with a larger master bath featuring Italian porcelain tile floors, a stained glass window and large whirlpool tub. Designed by Katherine Walden Interiors, the bathroom was featured in Macon Magazine. The bath redesign was custom built to work around a large oak tree just inches from the back outside wall. Another project involved the transformation of a narrow, dark galley kitchen into a bright, open, and inviting space with more room for cooking and entertaining. Jim, an experienced woodworker, created a new pantry with floor to ceiling cabinets to match existing cabinetry. Vineville contractor Bruce Tarpley removed part of a wall between the kitchen and dining room, and Willingham Sash recreated molding to match other historic pieces surrounding the entrance to a breakfast room turned music and art room for grandchildren. Jim is a sculptor whose work has been featured in exhibitions at Macon Arts Alliance. A 35 ft. piece commissioned recently by Mercer University is on display in the atrium lobby of the Mercer Medicine Building (former Georgia Music Hall of Fame). A number of Jim’s sculptural pieces can be seen in the Buford Place home, back deck and garden. One of note on the deck is “Splash,” a 68” tall piece with patinas on copper coating over steel. The 78” tall and 48” wide “Asian Bell” in the back garden features red cedar and patinas on steel. It enhances a private retreat with flagstone interlaced with Dwarf Mondo Grass, a fire pit, tall bamboo and other interesting plantings. 8

Historic Vineville Neighborhood Association

Stephen & Kate Adams

One of the few new construction homes in Vineville, 386 Calloway blends seamlessly into the historic architecture of the neighborhood. Exterior touches like the arched front door and clapboard siding make it nearly impossible to tell that the home hasn’t seen at least one world war. The design represents a new take on traditional cottage architecture that is becoming so popular. The home was built in 2003 by Franco DeMichael replete with historical touches, including a beautiful stack stone fireplace and custom inlayed tile in the kitchen. The floorplan is a nod to more modern sensibilities, with an open first floor and kitchen. The first floor leads out onto a luxurious back porch that extends the length of the house. The home’s outdoor space, including a beautifully designed back porch with elegant lighting and ceiling fans, takes full advantage of the southern weather, creating a usable space year-round.

3

Current owners Stephen and Kate Adams purchased 386 Calloway just after their engagement in 2015. They added the beautiful wooden fence in the backyard for their dogs Tucker and Mac, as well as the enclosure under the back porch to create secure storage. Stephen is the Economic Development Director for the Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority, acting as the single point of contact on behalf of MaconBibb County for all new industry/business recruitment as well as assisting local industry expansions. His wife Kate Lambert Adams is the 5th grade ELA teacher at Springdale Elementary School. Born were born and raised in Macon, GA.

238 Buford Place Drew Mote and Stephen Thompson

This 1915 traditional Craftsman Bungalow appears cozy as you approach from the street, but with over 2000 square feet of living space, is actually quite spacious. There are high ceilings throughout, coffered in the formal living room and dining room to add to the sense of spaciousness. The home was designed for entertaining, with a butler’s pantry that now serves as a wet bar and an eatin kitchen. The front porch is perfect for socializing with guests, and a deck on the rear of the house is great for cookouts. Many of the original features have been retained. The original pine wood floors are throughout the house, except for the back bedroom, which was a sleeping porch and later converted to the master bedroom with full en-suite bath. There is picture molding in the living room and dining room, and the dining room has high board-and-batten wainscoting. There is an eight-lite Craftsman front door and all the windows are the original nine-over-one panel double hung windows. Most of the coal fireplaces have been covered over the years, but the living room retains a working fireplace that has been restructured for burning wood. In keeping with the Craftsman style, there is minimal ornamentation on the exterior, only a bit of millwork around the tops of the front porch columns and the centerline of the front roof ridge, and molding was added to the front porch ceiling which ties it in with the coffered ceilings on the interior of the house. The home was most recently purchased by Stephen Thompson and Drew Mote in 2016. Stephen and Drew relocated here from Atlanta. They were drawn to the Vineville neighborhood due to its historic charm, sense of community, and proximity to Ingleside Village and Downtown. Drew’s grandparents grew up in Vineville, so he’s enjoyed connecting with his family history. The house itself needed no major work when they moved in, and they were pleased that it retained many of its original features after prior renovations. Their attention is now set on reviving a long neglected garden where only a few camellias, a couple of roses and a Chinese yew endured.

155 Buford Place Jane Winston

This charming Craftsman was built in 1918 by the Arnett family at what was then 117 Buford Place. Arnett, the builder and manager of National Milling Company, sold the home to A. Emmet Barnes, Jr., President of Barnes and Barnes Insurance Agency, in 1922, and his family lived in the home until 1937. In 1960 Julian and Mabel Hamlin, owners of Hamlin Sheet Metal in Macon, bought the home and lived there for the next 40 years until 2000. Updates throughout the years seamlessly blend modern design with 1900s bungalow construction to give this house a special charm. With a fireplace in every room, a wonderfully shaded front porch, and a charming period paint job, this house is the perfect Craftsman Bungalow. Jane Winston, the current owner, is a new addition to Vineville, purchasing the home in 2017. She moved with her cats Winnie and Bitsy to Macon from Centerville to finally be closer to where she works and plays. Jane teaches at Mercer School of Business and has been on the stage at Theatre Macon and Macon Little Theatre many times. The furniture, pottery and family memorabilia Jane acquired while living in Indiana and Michigan makes her Buford cottage home. “This Yankee loves living in Macon, Jane says.

2476 Vineville Avenue In 1924, the lot the Peacock Building occupies was listed as vacant land on the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps. The next available edition of the map, published in 1939, records a set of three commercial buildings with shared party walls in the same arrangement and footprint you see here today. With only minimal alterations to the original structure, The Peacock Building is an excellent example of surviving vernacular commercial architecture from the early 1900s. The first of the three commercial structures on this site, The Peacock Building was built in the late 1920s by the Peacock brothers to house their business, Peacock Drugs. During construction, they embossed the striking peacock you see in the concrete portion of the façade, which ensured its status as a local landmark and inspired its enduring moniker, “The Peacock Building.” During its most recent renovation, the peacock emblem was expertly restored by local decorative painter, Susan Raza. The building’s exterior still retains its original configuration, although the storefront facing Vineville has been altered slightly, with fixed doors in lieu of operating doors. Inside, the spacious lobby features a portion of the drugstore’s original tile floor and pressed tin ceiling. Elsewhere in the building, in the spaces once considered behind-the-scenes for offices and storage, the ceilings are wood beadboard. When the two Peacock brothers operated their drugstore here, one was responsible for the medical dispensary while the other handled the retail operation of the store, including a popular soda fountain. With the Piggly Wiggly grocery next door and two gas stations flanking Vineville Avenue, it was a lively center of commerce for the community. In fact, it’s likely that virtually every resident in Macon passed through the doors of the Peacock Building at one time or another. Imagine all the gossip and news traded alongside the medicine, sundries and ice cream sundaes! In 2011, The Peacock Building was carefully renovated to preserve its historic integrity by R. Lars Anderson, Attorney, with the expertise and guidance of Al Gerhardt Construction. Since 2012, the building has served as the professional home for Mr. Anderson and Jonathan Perry Waters, Attorney at Law.

Buckingham Place

Adam Ragusea and Lauren Morrill-Ragusea

In the late-19th century, these half-dozen blocks on the south side of Vineville Avenue were the unbroken suburban estate of Macon cotton broker Isaac Buckingham English. His grand Victorian house at the top of the hill was razed in 1965, but many early-20th century homes remain on his subdivided property. This house, 184 Buckingham Place, was built in 1917 on the southeastern edge of the Buckingham estate. It originally backed up to a small lake (on the current site of Vineville Christian Towers), which Macon health authorities drained in 1922 to combat mosquitoes. For most of its existence, the house was owned and inhabited by the family of Leo Blum, who ran a laundry business on Cotton Avenue and in Ingleside Village. After the Blums left, the house apparently shared in the economic decline of the broader neighborhood. According to an article in the Macon Telegraph, a resident of the house was arrested in 1992 for helping to run “a major Texas-to-Georgia drug operation.” Notoriety aside, the neighborhood today is experiencing a renaissance as young professionals are moving in and restoring properties to their former charm. Happily, the house is now owned by Lauren Morrill-Ragusea, an author of four Young Adult novels, and her husband, journalist and Mercer University faculty member Adam Ragusea, who live there with their two young sons. Despite its modest square footage, the home features an open, Bungalow-style floorplan centered on a large dining room that makes the house excellent for entertaining. According to a 1923 item in the Telegraph’s social pages, the Blums hosted a “Christmas dancing party” that year for 24 guests (at which “the attractive home was artistically decorated with holly, smilax, and quantities of lovely flowers,” per the Telegraph). While the Raguseas have not been as ambitious, they do enjoy hosting dinner parties, especially as the late-afternoon sun floods the house with light through its wide row of transom windows.

2448 Clayton Street Jeff and Katherine Waldrop

Originally known as the Armstrong House, this circa 1920 Dutch Colonial was first owned by Guy and Ethel Armstrong. Guy was the president of Ries & Armstrong Jewelers in downtown Macon. Though Guy passed away in 1932, his wife Ethel lived in the home for more than 50 years until her death in 1973. The home went through a series of renovations during Ethel’s lifetime and then the second owner, Dr. Herman Westmoreland, made further updates to the home during the 1970’s and used it to showcase his stunning collection of antiques. Dr. Westmoreland lived in the house for 25 years until he died in 1998. The moment that the house was put on the market by the deceased doctor’s estate, Mike and Monica Peavy made an offer on it, and they took possession of it in the winter of 1999. After living in a rental house for five months during an extensive renovation of the home including the kitchen and baths, they moved in and continued to rework the exterior of the home. They removed a wooden fence that bordered the property and replaced it with a handsome brick wall. Brick was naturally the material of choice since Mike was the vice-president of sales at Cherokee Brick & Tile Company at the time. With the help of a designer, they created a Charleston-style courtyard with brick-paved walkways, patios, wrought iron railings, and a fountain. After the Peavys moved out in 2008, the house was lived in by Mercer law students and then was empty for several years before the Waldrops purchased the house in 2014. A master bath and walk-in closet were added, and walls were knocked out to enlarge the master bedroom on the ground floor. A second full bath was added upstairs. A complete renovation of the den located off the kitchen was finished in the fall of 2016. The architectural style of this home is quite unique for the Vineville Historic District. With its gambrel roof and dormer windows, there is no other home in the neighborhood that resembles it.

163 RogersAvenue Home of Lars and Annette Anderson

The home of Lars and Annette Anderson was originally built by Cornelius and Lila Holleman in 1907. Mr Holleman was a grocer whose business was located on First Street in downtown Macon. This home was built in the new “Vineville Neighborhood” at a time when large properties in the neighborhood were being subdivided to create one of Macon’s first “subdivisions.” The home subsequently passed through several owners: H.G. and Beatrice Tucker, 1917 (he was a Chief Deputy, U.S. Marshall); A.A. Johnson, 1925 (Johnson Brothers); Mary Carswell, 1935 (“a widow”); and, Ben C. Stewart, 1949 (Secretary Treasurer, Stewart Oil). In the early 1950’s, the home was purchased by Ward Dennis, a well-known Macon architect who undertook major renovations to the home. Originally built in the traditional Victorian style complete with wraparound front porch, the residence was modified by Mr. Dennis to reflect the Federal style which was more popular at that time. The home retains that federal façade today. Having removed the Victorian features, Mr. Dennis added a large two story addition to the rear of the house which included a large family room downstairs, two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs, a kitchen on one side of the house, and a lovely spacious screened porch to the other side of the home. The 1970s brought a change of ownership when the home was purchased by Malcom and Katherine Lindley. Mr Lindley was an attorney and Katherine an interior designer. Meetings were held in the home’s family room as the neighborhood worked to establish the Vineville Neighborhood Association and designation for the community on the National Registry Historic District. Margaret and Ves Berry, M.D., owned the house in the 1980’s and subsequently sold it to Lars and Annette in December, 1993. Lars and Annette have enjoyed this home for 24 years and have added their own personal touches, including a complete kitchen renovation and the addition of the patio and second story porch at the rear of the residence. Annette’s German heritage is reflected in the traditional Christmas decorations throughout the home, including the large tree in the family room decorated with real candles which are lit on Christmas Eve in the German tradition.

2321 Vineville Avenue The Big House and Allman Brothers Band Museum is probably the most famous home on this year’s tour of homes. The house was built in the early 1900s with many features that mimic the Neel Reid style; however, the actual architect is unknown. The Big House became the place where members of The Allman Brothers Band, their roadies, friends, and families lived from 1970 until 1973. It was the focal point of gatherings in those early years when the magic that is The Allman Brothers Band was just taking shape and radiating from this historic Southern Town. The house was purchased by Kirk and Kristen West in 1993 from Judge Cedric and Helen Wesley. Kirk was the long-time tour manager and photographer for The Allman Brothers Band. The Wests formed the Big House Foundation in 2005 and sold the house to the foundation in 2007. Kirk also donated a large part of his personal collection of photos and memorabilia to the foundation that is now on display. This December, ramble on down Highway 41 and see handwritten lyrics to “Please Call Home,” listen to the bells that ring in “Blue Sky,” walk the hallowed grounds of the band that shaped the music industry and was credited with being the forefathers of Southern Rock. The Big House Foundation, Inc. opened the doors of The Allman Brothers Band Museum at The Big House to the public in 2009. The museum is pleased to be part of the 2017 Tour of Homes.
