CRAYFISH, WINTER STORMS OR CALMING SEASHORES? DISCOVER WHICH SEASON SUITS

YOU THE BEST.

How does bare feet, the sound of seagulls and long evenings gathered around the dinner table sound? Or how about cooler times spent picking chanterelle mushrooms and spotting deer? Visit the islands where Michelin star restaurants around the world get their scallops from, and where award-winning cheeses are made from the milk of free-roaming cows. You can enjoy concerts and cultural events held behind red-painted fishermen cabins, go for Christmas strolls looking at the cosy light decorations, and experience the most beautiful storms here. We have made a guide of the different seasons the islands have to offer, and you are welcome to visit any time.

One thing is for sure: you never feel confined on an island. The broad horizon and the many possibilities might have something to do with it. The people who live here by the coast have from very early on been shaped by their close contact with the rest of the world. The local sailors felt at home on all seas and today’s modern coastal community continues this heritage as suppliers of quality seafood to chefs worldwide.

The coast of Trøndelag is both wild and charming at the same time and offers experiences in the intersection between the genuine and untouched and the modern. Here, in the estuary of the deep Trondheim fjord, you will find Hitra and Frøya: Trondheim’s archipelago. The contrasts here might be big, but the people are all the same: warm, generous and welcoming.

We urge you to use this tourist guide frequently. Here, you will find information about how to get here, accommodation, places to eat, as well as activities and attractions. Let it inspire you – no matter if you are visiting for the first time, a frequent visitor or a local. Besides, once you have had a taste of the island life, you become an islander at heart.

The museum presents modern coastal culture with a special focus on the history of the Norwegian aquaculture industry. Its main base is at Fillan. The museum shop has, among other things, gift items, books, maps and fun toys/activities for children. Here you can also visit the permanent exhibitions ”The People of Flatvika” and ”The Russian Shipwreck”. ”The People of Flatvika” allows you to get to know the people living on the coastal farm Flatvika in 1920. The ”Russian shipwreck” raises the question: what really happened when Jedinorog sank off Kvenvær in 1760 in a tremendous storm?

Price for visiting the exhibitions: Adults NOK 100,-, seniors/students NOK 80,-, children under 16 years accompanied by family free of charge.

On the ground floor of Hitra Express Boat Terminal at Sandstad you will find the museum’s brand new aquaculture exhibition ”Rings in the water”. This exhibition looks at various ripple effects of the aquaculture industry in nature, society and management. It is free of charge to visit this exhibition.

11

On the 1st floor of the terminal, the museum has an exhibition where you can get to know the pioneers of Norwegian aquaculture. Many of them invested both houses and homes to succeed and should be credited with the fact that aquaculture currently accounts for approximately 22 000 jobs in Norway. This exhibition is free of charge as well.

Both at Fillan and at Sandstad a nice play nook has been created for children and in Fillan all children who want it get a free ”work booklet” with coloring, tasks and hunting for hidden Russian sailors.

There will be mustard and spices, cheeses, oil and hams, local vegetables and long-travelled French roquefort. And they’ll also have a simple serving with a glass of wine. IN THE FOREST

Hitra has great variation in topography, vegetation and wildlife. Forests, swamps, mountains and a myriad of lakes. And well-maintained and marked hiking trails make it possible for most people to get out into nature. Ulvøystien at Ulvøya outside Fjellværøya has been named the finest trail at Hitra. But taste and pleasure differ from person to person.

IN HISTORICAL ENVIRONMENT

Hitra’s history begins with the first strangers who came here over 10 000 years ago. Those who came across the ice, from different parts of Europe. Settlements from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age have been identified at Hitra. And there has been settlement here ever since. At visithitra.com we give some suggestions for historically interesting places to visit. Stroll in peace and quiet, learn, speculate, enjoy nature and the fresh air.

BICYCLE TOURS

We have made 6 suggestions for bike rides that mostly go on low-traffic roads. As is well known, there is some heavy traffic at Hitra in connection with transport of salmon from the salmon slaughterhouses at Frøya and Ulvøya at Hitra. If you choose from our suggested trips, you are as spared as possible from the busiest stretches.

THE COAST PILGRIMAGE

It is said that several roads led to Nidaros. One of the most important and perhaps most used pathways to the Viking king Olav Haraldsson’s shrine went along the coast and is known as the Kystpilegrimsleia. This used to be Norways main transportation route.

The Kystpilegrimsleia spans from Egersund to Nidaros – today known as Trondheim – and includes 26 key locations. One of them is Sula Chapell in Sula. Here, the church is always open and visitors can get their passport stamped. You can find the stamper in the mailbox by the main entrance. This key location offers a digital tour by using the app “Voice of Norway”, or you can scan the QR code made available on site.

FRØYADAGAN 2023

A cultural festival including a market, 3-11th June. Will commence with the bicycle race Tour d Frøya on 3rd June and end with walking the trail “Frøya over” on 11th June. On 9-10th June, there will be, among other things, market stalls in Frøya Square and a concert w/ “JONE. ”Kids show “Karius og Baktus.” A lighthouse named Sletringen Fyr was built in 1923 as a consequence of the fatal accident at Titran. Standing 46 meters tall, it is the tallest lighthouse in Northern Europe. Sletringen Fyr is made up of cast iron and placed on a low reef on the outskirts of the fishing village of Titran. Constructing the lighthouse was a great accomplishment! The lantern was lit for the first time in autumn of 1923 and became a guiding light for fishermen and sailors. The highest point of Sletringen is roughly 3 meters above sea level. The waves easily roll over the islet when there is stormy weather. Even when there is no wind, you will hear the ferocious waves hit and force themselves through every obstacle in their way. The waves turn white with foam every time they hit one of the many capricious islets and reefs surrounding Titran. The mighty Sletringen Fyr was completed and ready for service at the beginning of October 1923.

2023

This means that the lighthouse is celebrating its centenary in 2023. We will be marking this special event on 16th September with activities on Titran suited for the whole family.

If the weather allows it, there will be arranged boat trips to the lighthouse, and the lifeboat will we present. A religious service will be conducted outdoors, and children can enjoy rowing activities and a visit from Elias the little rescue boat. There will be food, an art exhibition, speeches, and the local theatre group will present a teaser from the performance “Titranspelet”. There is no funding for this event, so we are seeking support from various bodies. w/ Frøya Teaterlag, fashion show etc.

TOUR D FRØYA

3rd June, start and finish at Sistranda, a 42 km time trial. Festivity, “afterbike” and a bicycle banquet at Hotell Frøya. Up to 1000 participants. You can sign up for either the time trial or the recreational group.

Great hiking trail that starts at Husøyvalveien by the new residential area. Parking opportunities by Grendahuset. Staulosen naturally connects the Uttian and Skjelsøy hiking trails and you do not need a car to enjoy either trail. Uttian hiking trail is similar to “Ulvøystien” in Knarrlagsundet, Hitra. FLAVORS FROM THE ARCHIPELAGO

smakerfraoeyriket.no

(a network of local food- and beer producers)

BRYGGERIET FRØYA

bryggerietfroya.no

The brewery Frøya brews beer that pays homage to coastal culture, which is reflected in their choice of logo, names of products and design of the labels. The beer is brewed from good ingredients with patient craftsmanship and is made to complement the flavors in the rich selection of locally produced food at Frøya and at the neighboring island of Hitra. An exciting part of brewing beer is that the possibilities and varieties are countless. Therefore, in addition to their standard range, they are constantly exploring new beers and brewing techniques. They also produce seasonal beers and beers for restaurants who want to offer their customers a very special beer.

GARNVIKS RØKERI

garnvik.no

Garnviks Røkeri is a small family-run business from Frøya that produces smoked salmon and trout of high quality. Here you get genuine ingredients with exquisite taste, a guarantee of quality and a combination of new and old food knowledge. They work every day with a focus on quality and requirements for raw materials and want to grow as a supplier of seafood products in the knowledge that they keep what they promise their customers. They are constantly trying to develop products with special tastes and have since the start in 2014 made a name for themselves.

Garnviks Røkeri has won several awards both regionally and nationally.

38

HITRA GÅRDSMAT

hitragardsmat.no

Hitra Gårdsmat is located on a small island outside Hitra called Helgebostadøya. There, they produce organic, unpasteurized cheese from cow’s milk. Animal welfare is something they have a great focus on, all animals must be well. At Hitra Gårdsmat they have their own beds they lie in, brushes that brush them and the best, a lot of human contact. The animals can go outside all year round if the weather allows it and the animals want it.

The cheeses have received many awards, including Dairy Product of the Year with Hitra blue during the Trøndersk Food Festival in 2021 and Organic product of the year with Extra aged grotto cheese during the food festival in 2020. Three World Championship gold medals in 2018 with Young grotto cheese, Grotto cheese and Extra aged grotto cheese. There have been many Norwegian championship gold medals.

HELGEBOSTAD HORTICULTURE

helgebostadhagebruk.no

Helgebostad Horticulture is run by Elisa Helgebostad on Helgebostadøya. Well over a hundred different crops, annuals and perennials, vegetables and herbs are grown here. The gardens and a cultivation tunnel, total about 4.5 acres, surround the house where she lives with her two sons and a flock of chickens and ducks.

Vegetables and herbs are sold to restaurants and markets, and Elisa also takes on cooking assignments, arranges workshops and participates in various projects. Through the work with the plants, the goal is to explore possibilities for the food gardens of the future, and man’s place in this.

39

HURRAN SPISERI

hurran.no

Hurran farm is now run in the 4th generation, by the couple Aina Taraldsen Sandvik and Eskil Sandvik. The Taraldsen family has been working here with wild sheep since 2000, and with processing and slaughterhouse since 2007. The vision is to operate 100% ecologically with the resources the Frøya nature provides.

Hurran Spiseri is run by sisters Aina and Sara Taraldsen. Spiseriet focuses on seasonal and local ingredients, and they juice, pickle and refine a number of the ingredients they use in their menu. You will of course find products from Hurran wild sheep on the menu, as well as ingredients from other local food and drink producers in the archipelago. They want to be a culture bearer for food traditions while at the same time showing innovation in the use of the resources we surround ourselves with.

DALPRO GÅRDSMAT

dalpro.no/nettbutikk (Dalpro Gårdsbutikk)

Dalpro is a Labour Market Co-operative, helping people get back into the workforce through making locally sourced, award-winning products from wild sheep and deer. Dalpro’s products are all based on the meat of wild sheep and deer, and both animals are bred and slaughtered right there at their own farm, guaranteeing that every step in the process of the animals’ lives is cared for properly. The animals roam the hills and fields of the area freely all year long. This means that they are exposed to the Trøndelag weather and climate, as well as the plants and the geography of the area. The lifestyle and diet of the animals result in the meat having a slightly different taste to what people are used to; the herbs and plants they eat add extra flavor to the meat, making the taste wilder.

DOLMØY SEAFOOD

dolmoyseafood.no

Today they produce smoked salmon and trout, hot smoked pepper salmon, cognac marinated salmon, cured salmon and their unique Najade salmon, a salmon that is both cured and smoked. Nor should we forget another of their great specialties; Tuva’s specially smoked salmon, produced by perhaps Norway’s youngest production manager in salmon processing – Tuva herself, daughter of entrepreneur and owner of Dolmøy Seafood. The fish landing plant at Dolmøy has a history dating back to 1920. A pier was built at Halvard-holmen by the grandfather of Even Sivertsen, the founder of the Dolmøy fishing industry. Until 1976 there were sales of herring, fresh and stockfish, as well as own production of stockfish. For a time, the country’s largest herring producer was actually located here at Dolmøy.

TASTE THE FLAVOURS OF THE ARCHIPELAGO THIS SUMMER

Go on a guided tour or make yourself a tasty meal based on the best local commodities – the islands own gold! Here you will find products from every producer at the farm shop Dalpro Gårdsbutikk. There is a lot to experience at Dalpro: go visit the goats and deer, experience real farm life and check out the fairytale trail.

Hitra gårdsmat, Bryggeriet Frøya and Garnviks Røkeri all sell their own products. Dolmøy Seafood has their goods located at Rabben restaurant. Find opening hours on the producers’ own Facebook pages. Products from the islands can also be found at the local grocery stores as well as on the menu at several of the archipelago’s restaurants.

Hurran Spiseri offers a popular brunch menu titled “Smaker fra Øyriket” (flavours of the archipelago). It includes a complete meal with produce from everyone in the group. The venue as well as the meal itself will give you an unforgettable experience!
