100 Year HISTORY

W.J.Vincent started in 1923 when my grandfather, W.J.Vincent Snr., known as "The Governor" bought at auction, the premises of Fairbanks Timber Merchant at 473 Bristol Road, Selly Oak Until then, he had been a director of Jones Manley & Co. Limited. Before that, he had been its foreman, then manager when the hours of work were 6am until 6pm, 6 days per week.

In addition to the timber yard, where most of the arrivals were by canal or railway, there was also an extensive stable of horses to look after and feed It was not unusual for a man to lead, mainly on foot, a drawn load of timber to Redditch and back in one day. After my grandfather started on his own, my father soon joined him upon leaving school.

In the words of the late John Vincent

During the war years we machined timber for Mulliners Ltd for military vehicles, amongst many other Government requirements Following this, we continued to hold part of the national stock and supplied large quantities of whitewood. It was deep cut on our own two modern Robinson bandsaws to very thin sections for the manufacture of packing cases for the export of Cadbury's chocolate to the Middle East

We also used to supply loads each day of Abura to Chloride Alcad in Redditch, to produce battery cases. I recall the sawing created so much dust that we used to issue bottles of milk to our sawyers.

Today

"The highest quality timber products."

Vincent Timber are on a journey to Net Zero For the last few years, we have been making changes big and small to reduce the carbon output at our facility and in turn, the production of our timber.

We are exceptionally proud to say that we are now delivering your timber products with 50% less carbon thanks to these changes

A little about what we have implemented so far:

Efficient lighting

ULEZ compliant lorries

Electric side-loaders

Biomass heating from onsite waste

Bike-to-work scheme

Onsite fuelling

Our most recent innovation was the replacement of our extraction system. We striped out the old, unsustainable extraction for an eco-friendly air plants system

Co2 Targets

This change has reduced our energy usage by 112,608KWh per hour. As a reference, cooking in an oven for 30 minutes uses 2,000 watts. It also means improved air quality for staff, contributing to the wellbeing of our people and planet

Responsible Forestry

Vincent Timber are at the fore-front of the campaign to protect the environment We are only the 2nd company in the UK to be awarded Chain of Custody for CSA and SFI to cover Western Red Cedar. Chain of Custody refers to the ability to track wood from the time it leaves the forest through the processing and marketing channels to the final consumer. This means we can verify that a certified product genuinely comes from a certified source. All our timber is responsibly and sustainably sourced, managed by PEFC and FSC.

Adding Extra

JOINERY

Our facility affords a wide range of joinery processes These include laminated sections, CNC machining and curved timber options as well as mitre cutting, slotting and drilling.

FIXINGS

Don’t forget to order your corners, trims and fixings from us, too We can colour match corners and trims if you’re choosing Cape Cod.

BLACK & WHITE BUILDING

The Black & White Building, designed by London studio Waugh Thistleton Architects for The Office Group, is the tallest mass-timber office building in London, and it features Vincent Timber's thermally modified tulipwood louvres on its façade

The timber fins change in depth as they ascend the building, allowing them to manipulate the sun to the building's benefit and reducing its carbon footprint.

Innovative

Totally

Timber

The 4,480-square-metre structure is the 1st of its kind, being made solely from timber past its foundation. It was precision-engineered to be slotted together from prefabricated components

Its not just the structure and façade, either. Oak setts cover the floor, the furniture is made from a mixture of ash, walnut and cork, whilst the walls are spruce and the columns are beech.

Let’s grab a coffee and talk timber.

LONDON BRIDGE Internal Cladding

Designed by Grimshaw Architects, this striking £400m redevelopment has one very important visual focus. Vincent Timber supplied and machined over 7,000m of beautiful Western Red Cedar to create these phenomenal Class A and B acoustic timber panels for the station ceiling

Not only is the timber visually stunning but practical and intentional, too. The panels help to absorb not only the ambient sound of passengers through the station but the structural reverberation produced by the 18 trains that pass through the build every hour.

In such a high traffic public space, increased safety is always a factor The timber was therefore fire treated to Euro-class B, but what’s more impressive is the spring loaded dampener top-hangers and bomb blast safety tethering integrated into the ceiling design to provide upward blast protection in the event of a terrorist situation.

The open configurable system allows lighting via a handy integrated trough and is fully demountable increasing the sustainability of the whole design.

Visual Focus

Over 7,000 square metres of Western Red Cedar panels, in three distinct patterns, made up a major part of the £400m redevelopment of London Bridge Station.
