The concept of the guardian angel is one that has been present for centuries across a number of different cultures and belief systems. From the Ancient Greek civilization to modern day, theologians across the world are faced with the problem of identifying whether or not guardian angels exist and, if so, in what form they are present. While there is a wealth of empirical, anecdotal evidence of the presence of guardian angels, how can the idea of a guardian angel be defined?

Trying to define a guardian angel is an awkward process; the process of finding a 'one-size-fits-all' approach is tricky to say the least. The starting point for the definition must come from stories and personal accounts from those claiming to have encountered some form of spiritual guidance in the form of a protective angel or some other celestial being. Generally in Western belief systems, guardian angels are interpreted and indeed depicted as human-like beings sent from heaven to protect and guide their pupils.

Our Guardian Angels are spirits who protect us and pass on messages from higher spiritual authorities such as Archangels. The word angel comes from the Hebrew word 'aggelos' meaning 'one sent' or 'messenger'.

Although recognised by many religions including Paganism, Islam and Christianity, Angels exist outside of religion and take care of the Earth, animals and all people regardless of their beliefs, there are even Guardian Angels assigned to particular countries.

These Angels also act intermediaries between us between us and God and the Catholic Church has a special day for celebrating Guardian Angels which is generally October 2 (Feast of Guardian Angels), although in Germany and some other places it is the 1st Sunday in September. This is a great day to communicate with your Guardian Angel by doing a special ritual in honour and celebration of your Personal Angel.

Burn incense and candles, get yourself into a meditative mood and write to your Angel giving gratitude for his or her presence (whichever gender you feel is appropriate). In reality, these sentient beings have no gender, although mostly they appear to us as either male or female in order to communicate a particular expression of energy to us. They may appear as female to communicate nurturance for example or male to communicate strength and protection.

You can communicate with your Angel in a number of ways, not only by writing, but also in your thoughts or verbally. Sometimes you can feel the presence of your Guardian Angel and no words are necessary. You can luxuriate in the energy of your Angel, simply by feeling your friend near you.

All that is required is a blank mind, an open heart and your devotion. If you wish to communicate with your Guardian Angel, you must put in the effort as you would with any relationship.

Nevertheless even if you completely ignore your Angel, you will not be left unattended. St. Jerome said "how great the dignity of the soul, since each one has from his birth an angel commissioned to guard him". Your Guardian Angel will guard you in this life and will remain with you, even after death. Your Guardian Angel is ALWAYS with you, in every sorrow and happiness.

As your soul's best friend, your guardian angel may come to you as the nurturing presence of a mother to comfort you in times of need, bringing inspiration and beneficial influences. During crisis, your guardian angel may appear as a mighty catalyst, embodying the majesty and power of the Lord's love, prompting you to action. And in situations of physical or spiritual distress, your angel interacts with the strength and protectiveness of a father who pulls you swiftly from harm's way.

Most often, however, your guardian angel assists you in ways that are nearly invisible. With vigilance, you can begin to recognize the familiar, comforting feeling of your guardian angel's touch. Your guardian angel is standing by, waiting for every opportunity to connect with you. You must be receptive to accept the love, direction, and comfort your angel wants to bestow.

Desire - What do you want? Your desires create a force that compels you to take action. Your guardian angel and God respond to your desire. If you desire a deeper relationship with God and your guardian angel and take the action of reaching out, you will experience a response.

Contemplation - So much of our thought is consumed with non-sense.

Instead, think deeply about questions that will bring you closer to your guardian angel such as: What is your soul's deepest desire? Have you had experiences of your guardian angel? What is missing in your life?

Gratitude - Heart felt gratitude pulls you out of negative influences. Find something to be grateful for in every situation.

Write letters to your angel - Writing letters about specific topics and feelings helps you to become clearer about an issue, problem or question.

Once you are clear, you can ask for specific help. Then your angel can respond.

Devotion - Create an altar or place where you can go to feel the presence of your guardian angel. Put objects that remind you of your soul's desire on the altar. Add your letters to your altar. Pray here. Listen for answers. Light a candle and find a feeling of peace. Make this place a living presence in your life.

Journal - Write about your most intimate desires and feelings. As you contemplate questions, write about your thoughts and feelings. Use journaling to discover more about yourself, and then offer those discoveries to your guardian angel and God. Take action - As you make discoveries about yourself, take action. As you receive answers to your prayers, take action. Find ways to change that will bring you closer to the truer part of yourself and your soul's purpose where happiness and fulfillment lies.
