Perpetuo, Op. 17 Concerto for Contrabassoon
P erpetuo,
Concerto for Contrabassoon, was composed specifically for the techniques and abilities of contrabassoonist Kevin C. Grainger. Most noticeable is the extensive usage of circular breathing, which allows the soloist to create what are most likely the longest phrases ever performed by a contrabassoonist. The piece contains three movements, which are to be performed in any combination or order at the discretion of the soloist and ensemble. Each piece explores different emotions and reactions, inspired by the passing of two incredible musicians and mentors, Benno “Doc” Fritz and Arlene P. Kies. In addition, there are no defined numerical tempo markings; just as an individual reacts to loss differently, so must a performer convey their emotions through their own styles and tempi. Each performance is meant to be an intimate, personal, and unique experience of thoughtful, emotion-filled music. Of Memories is in the style of a perpetuum mobile, in which rolling sixteenth notes occur from the downbeat to the end without exception. Much like the style of the prelude from Maurice Ravel’s Tombeau, this endless motion represents the constant of time; time exists before us, throughout our lives, and after we have passed on. The movement should be interpreted as a continuation of all previous performances; the ensemble never initiates the movement, but rather joins it. Themes from familiar works that were significant to the composer and the musicians to whom this piece is dedicated create a harmonic base through which the ensemble travels. The movement is self-reflective, as themes tend to pop in and out of the fore- and background, much like how our memories of loved ones seem to pervade our thoughts, no matter how long it has been since their departure. –Vincent LaMonica
