The project sits on the border of two very contrasting cities separated by the St. Joseph river. Benton Harbor was once a flourishing town in the mid-1900s. According to the Chicago Tribune of 1987, “Twenty years ago, Benton Harbor was one of the most prosperous communities in Michigan with a healthy manufacturing base, chiefly foundries that supplied Detroit`s automakers. Today it is physically decayed. Most of its foundries have closed, and the few that remain open are a small fraction of their former size.” Datausa.io shows that it is now 87% black and is known for its low-income neighborhoods with a poverty rate of 48%. St. Joseph on the other hand is predominantly white (90%) and is considered the wealthier side of the river. This alone comes with a range of issues such as cultural differences, stereotypes and a lack of opportunities to connect. As we look to improve the world we live in we have to ask ourselves the question why? Why change and why Marina Island? Peace by the river is intended to transform Marina Island into an environment to foster growth and unity in both public and intimate settings. The objective of this mission comes with the idea that anyone of any age, race and social status can come to feel safe, secure and have a sense of belonging. Change starts here.

Its main purpose is to enable everyone who lives, passes by and experiences it leaving them with an impression of elegance, calmnes s and harmony like a swan resting on the water when the lighting is just right. And to that same affect simultaneously would feel the eccentric energy, life and vibrance like the movement beneath the surface of still water. Through this project a ripple effect will create smiles across St. Joseph and Benton Harbor that will one day be reflected upon in history, redefining the definition of a home. This will set a milestone as we wave a new flag as one community today for a better tomorrow. VISUAL

This is the land where miracles cover the soil like hills and mountains. For years, feet that walked this land carried hopeless souls, weary spirits, and children. Little girls and boys, with hearts of a thousand worries for tomorrow.

Upon daylight passing, I prayed for a restful night of sleep and water. But when the day came, walls grow from the ground with stories of belonging, pride, and dignity; inspired by my past, my history, and beauty. Beauty that my hands can make and my mind creates.

The floors revealed patterns from my roots with a place to unite. A place for songs, a place to learn, a place to grow, a place to dream. A haven; announcing a message of hope like light in the darkness. A place where eyes can shut with little worry for tomorrow. Where little boys and girls don't fear what the night might bring and rather admire its start.
