Camp Brite Star, Getting Lost Getting Found

Lindsey gathered the kids at the start of the trail. “Today, we’re learning an important skill,” she said. “If you ever

get lost, there are ways to stay safe and be found.”

Lindsey pointed to a

tall, unique tree

near the

trail. “Look for landmarks like this tree,” she said. “If you remember where it is, it can help you find your way back or stay in one spot to be found.”
“If you ever feel lost, the first thing to do is stay calm,” Lindsey said. “Take deep breaths. Panicking makes it harder to think clearly.”
“Once you realize you’re lost, it’s best to stay in one place,” Lindsey explained. “That makes it easier for someone to find you. Moving around can make it harder for searchers to help.”

Lindsey held up a whistle. “If you have a whistle, blow it three times. If not, call out loudly every few minutes. This helps people know where you are.”

The kids practiced calling for help. “Help! Over here!” they shouted, smiling as Lindsey cheered them on. “You’ve got it!” she said. “Loud and clear is the way to go.”

“If you’re lost, look for a safe spot to wait, like by a big rock or sturdy tree,” Lindsey instructed. “This way, you’re visible and safe while you wait for help.”
Lindsey held up a bright bandana. “If you have something bright, like this, hang it where it can be seen. Bright colors help rescuers spot you more easily.”
“Before you go exploring, always tell someone where you’re headed,” Lindsey reminded them. “This helps people know where to look if you don’t come back on time.”

As they walked, Lindsey showed the kids how to mark their trail safely, like leaving small, harmless signs to remember their way.

“This helps you find your way back, but make sure it doesn’t hurt nature.”

At the end of the lesson, Lindsey asked,

“What’s the most important thing to remember if you’re lost?” The kids shared their answers, feeling more confident about staying safe.

Think About:

1. Why is it important to stay calm if you realize you’re lost?

2. How can staying in one place help rescuers find you?

3. What items or clothing could you use to help others see you?

Let's Work Together: By knowing what to do if we get lost, we can stay safe and make it easier for others to help us. Preparing ourselves helps us feel calm and confident in any situation.

I Will: I will remember these steps and practice staying calm, helping others find me if I ever get lost.

The Importance of Knowing: Knowing what to do in unexpected situations keeps us safe and reassures us that help is always on the way. Being prepared is a powerful skill!
