What is a Volcano?

A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock (magma) beneath the Earth’s surface. When pressure builds up, magma escapes through the top, and we call it an eruption.

Where Volcanoes Live Volcanoes are found all over the world, especially along the “Ring of Fire” — a horseshoe-shaped zone around the Pacific Ocean.

Many volcanoes also form on islands and under the ocean.

Volcano Anatomy Inside a volcano is a magma chamber where molten rock collects.

Magma

travels up through vents and out of the crater.

Lava flows down the sides, and ash can rise high into the sky.

Types

of Volcanoes Volcanoes come in different shapes: shield volcanoes are wide and gentle, stratovolcanoes are tall and steep, cinder cones are small and cone-shaped, and underwater volcanoes form on the ocean floor.

Why Volcanoes Erupt Volcanoes

erupt because molten rock rises from deep inside the Earth. When gases inside the magma expand, pressure builds until the volcano bursts, releasing lava, ash, and steam.

Famous Volcanoes Mount Fuji in Japan is known for its beauty, Mount Vesuvius buried Pompeii in ancient times, Kīlauea in Hawaii erupts often, and Mount St. Helens in the USA had a famous eruption in 1980.

Volcano Hazards Volcanoes

can be dangerous. Lava flows, ash clouds, and pyroclastic flows can damage land and buildings. Scientists study volcanoes to warn people before they erupt.

Volcano Benefits

Volcanoes help create new land and make soil rich for farming. Many beautiful islands, mountains, and hot springs exist because of volcanoes.

Underwater Volcanoes

Some volcanoes erupt deep under the sea. They can build underwater mountains that sometimes grow tall enough to become islands.

World Record Volcanoes

Mauna Loa in Hawaii is the largest volcano on Earth, Mount Tambora in Indonesia had the most powerful eruption in history, and Eyjafjallajökull,“Island Mountain Glacier” in Iceland created an ash cloud that stopped airplanes in 2010.
