What is a Lion?
Lions are one of the largest cats in the world. They are strong, fast, and known for their beautiful golden fur. Male lions have a mane — a thick collar of hair around their neck — that makes them look even more majestic. Lions are called the “King of Beasts,” but they are actually caring family animals who live and work together.

Where Lions Live Lions like warm, open places where they can see for miles.
Most live in the savannas and grasslands of Africa, but some also live in woodlands and dry forests. Their tan fur helps them blend in with the tall grasses while they rest or stalk prey.

Lion Anatomy
Every part of a lion’s body is built for power and hunting. They have sharp claws for gripping, strong jaws for holding, and powerful legs for running and leaping. Their tails have tufts at the end that help with balance, and their keen eyes can spot movement far away.

Male vs. Female Lions
Males and females have different jobs in the pride.
Male lions are larger and have manes, which make them look bigger to rivals.
Female lions are lighter and faster — perfect for hunting.
Both protect their pride and work together to raise cubs.

Hunting and Diet Lions are skilled hunters that work as a team.
Females usually do most of the hunting, using teamwork to sneak close to prey like zebras, buffalo, and antelope. Once close, they charge at top speed. Lions will also scavenge if the opportunity is there.

Lion Prides
Lions are the only cats that live in groups called prides.
A pride can have several females, their cubs, and a few males. They share food, care for each other’s cubs, and protect their territory from intruders.

Lion Cubs Lion cubs are playful and curious. They spend their days wrestling, chasing, and practicing hunting skills. Cubs depend on the pride for food and protection until they are old enough to take care of themselves.

Communication Lions talk to each other in many ways. They roar to warn others, call to their pride, or tell rivals to stay away. They also rub heads to show affection and use scent to mark their territory.

Record-Breaking Lions
Some lions are truly giants! The largest recorded male lion weighed more than 600 pounds and was over 11 feet long from nose to tail.
Lionesses are smaller, but still powerful and fast.

Fun Fact Page Lions are champions at relaxing! They can sleep for up to 20 hours in a single day, saving their energy for hunting and defending their pride.
