What is a Giraffe?
Giraffes are the tallest land animals on Earth. They are easy to recognize by their long necks, long legs, and spotted coats.

Where Giraffes Live Giraffes live in Africa, mostly in savannas and open woodlands where there are plenty of trees to eat from.

Giraffe Anatomy Giraffes have long necks, strong legs, spotted coats, and little horns called ossicones.

The Long Neck
Even though giraffes have such long necks, they still only have seven bones — just like humans! Their neck helps them reach food high in the trees.

Eating and Diet Giraffes mostly eat leaves, flowers, and fruits from tall trees. Their favorite food is acacia leaves.

Family Life Giraffes live
in loose
groups
called towers. They can gather in small or large groups, often led by females with their calves.

Calves (Baby Giraffes) A baby giraffe, called a calf, is already about six feet tall at birth! They can stand and walk just a few hours after being born.

Communication Giraffes are usually quiet, but they can hum at night, snort, or even rub necks to communicate with each other.

Defense and Survival Giraffes can kick hard with their long legs to defend themselves from predators like lions.

Record-Breaking Giraffes
Male giraffes can grow up to 18 feet tall, making them the tallest land animals on Earth!

Fun Fact Page
A giraffe’s tongue can be up to 20 inches long and is dark purple to protect it from the sun.
