What is a Dinosaur? Dinosaurs were land-dwelling reptiles that lived millions of years ago. They walked with legs straight under their bodies and came in many shapes and sizes.

The Dinosaur Timeline Dinosaurs lived

Mesozoic Era:

Jurassic,

during the

the

Triassic,

and Cretaceous

periods. Different dinosaurs appeared and disappeared across these times.

Plant-Eaters Herbivores like Triceratops, Stegosaurus, and Brachiosaurus ate leaves, cones, and ferns.

Some used long necks to reach treetops; others munched low plants.

Meat-Eaters Carnivores such as Tyrannosaurus rex and Allosaurus hunted or scavenged. Sharp teeth and strong jaws helped them eat meat

.

Moving Around

Some dinosaurs walked on two legs, others on four—and a few could switch between both. They held their tails off the ground to balance.

Staying Safe Dinosaurs protected themselves with horns, spikes, armor, and speed. Ankylosaurus even had

a tail club!

Nests and Babies Many dinosaurs laid eggs.

Fossils show nests and hatchlings, telling us that some parents guarded or cared for their young.

Super Senses

Dinosaur skulls show clues about their

senses.

Big eye sockets suggest good vision; long snouts and nasal passages hint at strong smells.

Fossils Tell the Story Fossils are remains or traces preserved in rock. Paleontologists carefully dig, map, and study them to learn how dinosaurs lived.

How Big Were They? Dinosaurs

ranged from chickensized Compsognathus to buslength giants like Brachiosaurus. Size comparisons help us imagine them.

Feathers! Some dinosaurs had feathers for warmth, display, or gliding.

Small raptors like Microraptor were feathery from head to tail.

The Big Extinction

About 66 million years ago, a giant asteroid struck Earth. Many dinosaurs died out, along with lots of other animals and plants.

Dinosaurs Today?

Birds are living dinosaurs! Modern birds evolved from small, feathered theropods—

so dinosaurs still fly above us.
