What is a Crocodile?
Crocodiles are large reptiles with powerful jaws, sharp teeth, and tough, scaly skin. They
have been around since the time of the dinosaurs!

Where Crocodiles Live Crocodiles live in warm parts of the world near water, such as rivers, swamps, and lakes. They spend much of their time in the water but come on land to bask in the sun.

Crocodile Anatomy Crocodiles have eyes and nostrils on top of their heads so they can see and breathe while staying mostly underwater. Their powerful tails help them swim quickly.

What
Crocodiles Eat Crocodiles
are carnivores. They eat fish, birds, and even large animals that come too close to the water’s edge.

Hatchlings Baby crocodiles are called hatchlings. They chirp to let their mother know when they’re ready to leave the eggs. She helps carry them to the water.

Crocodile Nests
Crocodile mothers build nests out of mud and plants. Inside, they lay dozens of eggs. When the babies hatch, the mother often stays nearby to protect them.

Crocodile Families
Crocodiles like to bask together in the sun. This helps them warm up after spending time in the cool water.

Hunting and Survival
Crocodiles
are expert hunters. They wait silently, almost invisible in the water, and then lunge at their prey with lightning speed.

Crocodile Communication
Crocodiles communicate with growls, bellows, and hisses.
Hatchlings make high-pitched chirps to call their mothers.

Record-Breaking Crocodiles
The Saltwater crocodile is the largest living reptile and can grow over 20 feet long! The Dwarf crocodile is the smallest, only about 5 feet long.

Fun
Fact Crocodiles can hold their breath underwater for more than an hour!
