What is a Bee?
Bees are small but mighty insects. They have six legs, two wings, and a body covered with tiny hairs. These hairs help them collect pollen from flowers. Bees are part of a family of insects that includes wasps and ants. They are some of the most important creatures on Earth because they help plants grow.

Where Bees Live Bees can live in many different places. Some bees make their homes in hives, which they build inside hollow trees or man-made boxes. Others dig small burrows underground, while wild bees may nest inside old logs or even walls.

Bee Anatomy Every bee has three main body parts: the head, thorax, and abdomen. On the head, you’ll find the antennae, eyes, and mouthparts. The thorax holds the wings and legs, which allow bees to fly and gather food. The abdomen contains the stinger in female bees.

Pollination Bees are the world’s greatest pollinators. As a bee flies from flower to flower, it collects pollen on its body and carries it to other plants. This helps flowers make seeds and fruits. Without bees, many of the foods we eat— like apples, strawberries, and cucumbers—would not exist.

Honey Making Bees collect sweet nectar from flowers using their long tongues. They carry the nectar back to the hive and pass it from bee to bee, changing it into honey. Then they store the honey inside wax combs. Honey is food for bees during the winter.

The Hive A hive is like a busy city. At the top is the queen bee, whose job is to lay eggs. Worker bees are the busiest—they collect food, clean the hive, and care for the young. Drone bees are the males, and their main job is to help the queen make more bees.

Bee Families
Bees live in large families called colonies. A colony can have tens of thousands of bees all working together. They share food, protect the hive, and raise new bees as a team. By working side by side, bees show us the power of cooperation and community.

Communication Bees have a special way of talking to each other. When a bee finds flowers full of nectar, it does a dance called the “waggle dance.” The other bees watch and learn where the food is. They can also use scents and buzzing sounds to send messages.

Bee Defense Bees are gentle creatures, but they will protect their hive if they feel threatened. Worker bees use their stingers to scare away animals or people who come too close.
However, bees only sting as a last resort. They would rather spend their time gathering nectar and helping flowers grow.

Record-Breaking Bees Did you know there are more than 20,000 types of bees? The largest bee in the world is Wallace’s Giant Bee, which is as long as your thumb! The smallest bee is the Perdita bee, which is smaller than a grain of rice. Bees come in all shapes and sizes, but every one is important to nature.

Fun Fact Page Fun Fact: Bees can flap their wings about 200 times per second! That’s what makes the familiar buzzing sound you hear when they fly.
