What is a Bat?

Bats are mammals that can fly — the only mammals with true wings. They have fur, give birth to live young, and feed their babies milk. Their wings are made of skin stretched over long finger bones.

Where

Bats Live Bats can be found all over the world except in extreme deserts and polar regions. They live in caves, trees, under bridges, and even in city buildings. Bats like dark, safe places to rest during the day.

Bat Anatomy A bat’s body is lightweight for flight. Their large ears help them hear tiny sounds, their noses can detect scents, and their tail membranes help with steering. The skin of their wings is sensitive and full of touch receptors.

Types of Bats

There are two main groups of bats: fruit bats (megabats) and insect-eating bats (microbats). Fruit bats have big eyes and often fly during the day, while microbats use echolocation to hunt at night.

Echolocation Many bats use echolocation to “see” in the dark. They make high-pitched sounds that bounce off objects, and their brains use the echoes to map their surroundings and find prey.

What Bats Eat

Different

bats eat different foods. Some eat insects, helping control pests. Others eat fruit and nectar, helping plants by spreading seeds and pollinating flowers. A few even eat fish or small animals.

Bat Families

The bat family tree is huge!

Megabats

include flying foxes and other fruit bats. Microbats include most insect-eating species. Each has unique features to help them survive.

Bat Pups

Baby bats are called pups. They cling to their mothers with tiny claws and are fed milk until they’re old enough to fly and hunt on their own.

Bats and People Bats help humans by controlling insect populations, pollinating crops, and spreading seeds for new plants to grow. They are an important part of healthy ecosystems.

Fun Fact

The flying fox is the largest bat in the world, with a wingspan that can reach up to 6 feet!
