Every year, this event celebrates women leaders in our community who champion health care access for Northeast Florida’s working, uninsured families and individuals.

Our long-standing legacy partnership with Volunteers in Medicine reinforces this commitment and the lasting impact of its free South San Marco clinic. Additionally, the impact Volunteers in Medicines volunteer service providers have on our community is profound.

NECKLACE DRAWING ABOUT OUR EMCEE Joy Purdy is a two time, Emmy-award winning journalist, also on the anchor desk with The Local Station co-anchoring the 5, 5:30, 6, and 6:30 p.m. newscasts with Tom Wills, Tarik Minor and Kent Justice.

Joy was born and raised outside Trenton, N.J., where her parents nurtured her inquisitive nature by having her watch and relay to them the morning weather report from the Today Show as they prepared for work each day.

Joy’s television career began shortly after graduating from Villanova University with a B.A. Degree in Mass Communications and a minor in Education.

After beginning her career in New Jersey, Joy’s strong journalistic reputation and contagious energy led her to Jacksonville, Florida as a Weekend News Anchor and “Police Beat” Reporter for then CBS-affiliate WJXT from 1995 to 2000.

Joy was awarded the Associated Press’ Individual Achievement Award for her work. Before long, bigger markets began calling and Joy accepted a noon and 5 p.m. anchor position with CBS-owned WFOR in Miami. Known in the news biz as the nation’s breaking news capital, Miami TV coverage sharpened Joy’s journalistic skills.

After getting married in the spring of 2006, Joy returned to Jacksonville in September of 2007 to be with her new husband. And this time as a part of the First Coast News team.

Joy left WTLV early in 2013 shortly after giving birth to their second child to spend time with her young children. At the end of the summer, she was ready to get back into the professional world and was happy to turn to her first family in Jacksonville at WJXT. Joy was recently awarded her second regional Emmy Award for her story bringing awareness to local first responders’ efforts to more easily find people with cognitive disabilities who have wandered from home. She won her first regional Emmy for her personal news story that focused on overcoming her anxiety over bridges.

Joy, her husband and their children enjoy spending time together, whether it’s at the beach, traveling to new cities, or just hanging at home.

VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE ABOUT OUR FOUNDERS In 2002, in response to the overwhelming need for healthcare among the working uninsured in North Florida, Dottie Dorion and Dr. Jim Burt met with Volunteers in Medicine national founder, Dr. Jack McConnell, who founded the first VIM in Hilton Head, N.C. The model for free family medical care was hugely successful in reducing emergency room visits and acute care urgencies for this vulnerable population. Bringing retired and active medical professionals together in a volunteer capacity to provide treatment to working people with no health insurance was the answer. Dorion and Burt spent a year planning, fundraising, and overseeing the complete remodeling of what was an old music store into a modern, well-equipped medical clinic at 41 East Duval Street in downtown Jacksonville. Volunteers in Medicine opened its doors on September 12, 2003. On September 12, 2023, Volunteers in Medicine celebrated 20 years and continues the legacy started by these two visionary leaders.

Dottie Dorion is a registered nurse and one of the founders of Community Hospice, where she served as director of the organization for three years. In addition to her ongoing support and advocacy of Volunteers in Medicine, Mrs. Dorion’s philanthropy extends to funding endowed athletic and nursing scholarships at the University of North Florida and her alma mater, Columbia University.

Urologist Dr. Jim Burt retired from the McIver Clinic in 2001 but has long been active in community affairs and advocacy for the medically underserved. Appointed by Florida Governors, he has served on Judicial Nominating Committees for the Fourth Judicial Circuit and the Florida Board of Medicine. He has been honored by the American Cancer Society, the Duval County Medical Society and the American Medical Association for Volunteerism.

On behalf of Volunteers in Medicine and our Board of Directors, we are pleased to welcome our guests to the eighth annual Women with Heart Luncheon presented by Florida Blue.

Every year, VIM is proud to recognize eight special women who have made exceptional contributions to the wellness of Northeast Florida. Today, we will meet each of these Women with Heart, share their stories, and celebrate their accomplishments.

We are also delighted to celebrate the remarkable contributions of Davalu “Davy” Parrish.

Davy’s dedication and advocacy raised the bar for healthcare and children’s services, and, thanks to Davy, the world is a better and safer place for Jacksonville’s at-risk children and youth.

Each of our 2024 honorees was selected unanimously as a Woman with Heart. These exceptional women stood out from the crowd as they gave of their time and expertise to help those who were less fortunate and in need of help. They served as leaders, mentors, researchers, educators, healers, and – always – as shining examples for others to emulate.

It gives us great pleasure to recognize their accomplishments.

Throughout 2024, our Women with Heart will share their influence by serving as advocates for our mission. They will be helping us generate the much-needed awareness and funding that enables VIM to provide low-income working uninsured adults with quality healthcare.

2024 WOMEN WITH HEART HONOREES Kim Marie Barbel Johnson, D.O. Dr. Kim Marie Barbel Johnson is a Family Physician and Clinical Research Scientist. She serves as the Director of Community Clinical Trials Administration at the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center (MCCCC) in Jacksonville, Florida.

Over the past three decades, she has provided direct clinical care to patients and families in NE Florida. In her current role at Mayo Clinic, she supports the development and delivery of community-based, pragmatic, and decentralized cancer/ cancer-related clinical trials.

Dr. Barbel Johnson has spent her entire Family Medicine career in Jacksonville, Florida. In both academic and community settings, she has earned a commendable track record in health equity advocacy. Since 2009, she has served as the principal investigator or sub-investigator for many industry-sponsored clinical trials across multiple organ systems within her scope of practice.

Dr. Barbel Johnson has been active in several medical and civic organizations. She served on the Board of Directors of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Richard Webster-Bass Health Institute, Inc., and on the First Coast American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Leadership Cabinet. She is a founding member of the Northeast Florida Clinical Trials and Translational Science Consortium and is active in Jacksonville’s Patient Centered Research Collaborative.

Dr. Barbel Johnson has received multiple professional awards. She has been recognized by the University of Florida CHFM as “Teacher of the Year,” by The Florida Academy of Family Physicians as “Young Leader of the Year” and by NSU with the “Rose Community Award.”

Susan D. Brandenburg Susan D. Brandenburg is an award-winning biographer with more than four decades of experience. She is President of Susan the Scribe, Inc. Publishing, a member of the Florida Writer’s Association and teaches a class, “Remember Who You Are,” at the University of North Florida’s OLLI Program.

Susan has written the biographies/memoirs of many local luminaries including Carlton Spence, W. Scott McLucas, Marilyn Peyton, Drs. Gaston & Maria Victoria Acosta-Rua, Jimmy Stockton, Marcia Morales, John R. Forbes, Iva “Godiva” Larson, Ray Ross, and Major General Gerald Stack Maloney, as well as historical memoirs of Rodeheaver Boys Ranch, Smoak, Davis & Nixon, and The Honorable Company of Past Chairmen (TPC Redcoats). Susan is currently working on the memoir of Alton and Gwen Yates, Jenny Guth, Eileen Kelly, and The Centennial Celebration Book of the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club. Susan also writes and publishes a monthly children’s book titled Jeremy’s Journey Through Jacksonville Looking for Leaders for READ USA, a non-profit organization that serves elementary school children in Duval County.

A board member of the Stetson Kennedy Foundation, the National League of American Pen Women and The Carpenter’s Shop Center, and on the Advisory Board of READ USA, Susan lives in the Lakewood section of Jacksonville. She is a proud and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her motto, The Power of One, refers to God, the One whose guidance she seeks in using the gift of words He has given her.

2024 WOMEN WITH HEART HONOREES Ari Jolly Ari Jolly serves as an Expert Counsel at GuideWell Mutual Holding Corporation (“GMHC”). In this role, Ari is responsible for providing legal support to the Investment and Corporate Development operations of the GMHC enterprise and for providing board governance support to numerous GMHC subsidiary and joint venture companies.

Prior to joining Florida Blue in 1993, Ari practiced with the law firm of Rogers, Towers, Bailey, Jones, and Gay in Jacksonville. Ari was also an Officer in the United States Navy from 1983-1990 and the recipient of a Navy Achievement Medal (1987).

Throughout her career, Ari has been active in her community. She is a member of the Florida Bar and Jacksonville Bar. She serves on the boards of Fleet Landing and the American Public Transportation Association. In 2019, Ari was reappointed by Governor DeSantis to the board of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) and served as the Chair of the JTA from 2021 to 2022. In 2021 Ari assumed the Chairmanship for the Board of the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville. In 2023 Ari joined the Board and Executive Committee of the JAX Chamber. Ari also serves on the Board of the JU Public Policy Institute.

In 2015 Ari was recognized as a Jacksonville Business Journal’s Woman of Influence. In 2022 she was honored by the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) as one of the Women Who Move the Nation and by Jacksonville University with the Outstanding Military Alumnus of Distinction Award. That year, Ari was also a Florida Times-Union EVE Award Finalist.

Ari graduated from Jacksonville University (1983) and the Florida State College of Law (1990) with Highest Honors.

She is an honors graduate from the Naval Legal Justice School, Rhode Island (1984).

Amy P. Meyer Amy Meyer serves as Chief Legal Counsel for the Florida Department of Health in Duval, Baker, Nassau and Clay Counties. She began her legal career as an attorney with the Florida Department of Health, Prosecution Services Unit, where she served as counsel to the Division of Medical Quality Assurance for matters before the Board of Nursing. She moved to Jacksonville in 2003 and entered private practice in insurance defense. In 2005, she began working at the University of Florida where she specialized in health law, medical practice defense, and general liability defense. She rejoined the Department of Health as Chief Legal Counsel for Duval County in 2016 and took on the responsibility of additional counties as her experience grew.

Mrs. Meyer is a member of the Florida Bar and the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida.

She received her Juris Doctor from Florida State University. She has a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Health Administration from the University of Florida. Ms. Meyer is also a Certified Professional Risk Manager. She is active in the Jacksonville community serving as the Chair for a Night for Heroes (fundraiser for UF Health Jacksonville).

Amy Meyer is a member of the DOH-Duval Senior Executive Leadership team, Privacy Officer, and Ethics Officer.

She provides legal services for the agency, including contract review, regulatory enforcement and consultation on privacy, employment, and human resources issues.

2024 WOMEN WITH HEART HONOREES Andrea P. Reyes Andrea P. Reyes is an Immigration Attorney and owner of Reyes Legal, PLLC in Jacksonville, Florida. Born in Colombia, Ms. Reyes graduated from Florida State University and in 2012 from the Florida Coastal School of Law with Pro Bono Honors.

In 2014, she opened her solo practice and for the past eight years has been focused on family-based immigration, humanitarian-based immigration, and deportation defense.

Ms. Reyes is cofounder of the Northeast Florida Immigrant Resource Alliance (NEFIRA). She is a frequent speaker at rallies and marches and provides free Know Your Rights trainings to immigrant communities. She shared her advocacy journey in a 2021 FSCJ TEDx talk entitled “No One is Illegal.”

Ms. Reyes currently serves as the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Jacksonville Regional Vice Chair where she is the liaison to the Jacksonville USCIS Field Office. Andrea has been a presenter of the “We are Duval” program, designed to help Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officers practice behaviors that improve the lives of minorities and immigrants. Between 2015–2017, Andrea was an Adjunct Clinical Professor at Florida Coastal School of Law, teaching Interviewing & Counseling Clinic for Human Trafficking Survivors. Since 2017, Andrea has served on the Board of Directors of the Central Florida Chapter for (AILA).

Andrea was recently selected as the Northeast Florida “Abogada Titular” for the Mexican Consulate in Orlando. She was designated as the NE Florida Immigration Consultant Attorney for the Immigration Customs and Enforcement’s Intensive Supervision Appearance Program (ISAP) and the Electronic Monitoring Device (EMD) Program.

When not busy at Reyes Legal, PLLC, or engaging in community outreach, Andrea loves spending time with her friends and family.

Pauline J. Rolle, M.D. Dr. Pauline J. Rolle is the Ascension St. Vincent’s Jacksonville Pediatric and Southeast Georgia Primary Care Medical Director. Dr. Rolle is also the former Medical Executive Director and acting Health Officer for the Florida Department of Health in Duval County (DOH-Duval).

She is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Public Health. A native of Miami, she is a graduate of Fisk University and Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee and she completed her Pediatric residency training at the University of Florida Health Science Center at Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida. She completed her Master of Public Health at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida.

Dr. Rolle was awarded the 2019 University of South Florida Outstanding Alumni Award.

Dr. Rolle has been in practice for twenty years. She has been interviewed as a guest expert in multiple television and radio segments. As a physician leader, Dr. Rolle most recently served on Mayor Donna Deegan’s Health Programs Oversight Committee transition team and served as liaison for the Maternal Child Health subcommittee transition team. She is committed to ensuring families have the information and access to care that they need to effectively care for the whole child. She believes that comprehensive pediatric and adolescent care is not a solo act, it is a partnership between the provider, the family, and the patient. She is married to Harold Rolle, Jr. and they have two wonderful children (Marha and Harold III).

2024 WOMEN WITH HEART HONOREES Amanda Emery Stevens Amanda Emery Stevens has served the healthcare community for more than 25 years with experience spanning operations, business development, marketing, physician recruitment, IT, service line leadership, and biotechnology. Ms. Emery Stevens has led mission-critical strategies for Baptist Health, Northeast Florida’s largest health system, for more than 15 years. Now Vice President of Operations for Baptist Medical Center South, she has oversight of the full scale of operations for Baptist Health’s second largest facility, a 357-bed acute care hospital and medical campus. While serving as the Executive Director of Physician and Provider Recruitment, Emery Stevens led the recruitment of more than 400 physicians and providers to serve the community across 27 different medical specialties and sub-specialties. As Executive Director of Business Development, she engineered the medical community launch of several hallmark programs and key services including the formation of Baptist Heart Specialists, Baptist Clay Medical Campus in 2013, the Baptist Health Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center, Baptist MD Anderson, and the Baptist Health Structural Heart Program. In 2022, Ms. Emery Stevens successfully led the ambulatory and ancillary component of the largest transformational initiative in Baptist Health history: the full cycle implementation and go-live of Epic, unifying the electronic health record system across all acute care, ambulatory, and ancillary services. Her dynamic leadership has produced exceptional outcomes and contributions to the community, and to the mission and growth of Baptist Health.

A native of St. Johns County, she earned a Master of Health Administration from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical and Biological Sciences from Georgia Southern University. Ms. Emery Stevens is most proud of her three daughters, Emmy, Isabelle, and Zoe, who were all raised in the Northeast Florida community.

Gladys P. Velarde, M.D. Dr. Gladys P. Velarde, a distinguished medical professional, is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Florida Health - Jacksonville. She serves as the Director of the Women’s Cardiovascular Health Program and Cardiovascular Fellowship Training Program. Her journey, from Peru to New York University for her bachelor’s and medical degrees, was further enhanced by rigorous training in Internal Medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and Cardiovascular Disease fellowships at Mount Sinai Hospital and Boston University.

Dr. Velarde’s pioneering role at the University of Rochester as the first woman and minority cardiologist on faculty led to gender and ethnic-specific clinical research.

There, she established the Strong Women’s Heart Health Program, one of the first ones in the nation devoted to the care of women afflicted with heart disease and the Latino health pathway, an immersive experience for US medical students to expand their education in global disparities of cardiovascular disease.

In her capacity as Cardiovascular Fellowship Program Director at the University of Florida- COM Jacksonville, she passionately mentors and guides the training of future cardiologists.

Dr. Velarde is a Fellow of esteemed organizations such as the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology, where she holds active roles. She currently serves as Secretary General for the National Hispanic Latino Cardiovascular Collaborative section of the American Heart Association, and co-chairs the National Minority Cardiovascular Health Alliance of the Make Well Known Foundation.

Dr. Velarde’s numerous awards include the National Hispanic Medical Association Leadership Award, Women of Distinction Award from the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology Florida Chapter Gifted Teacher Award, and the Leon Haley Inaugural Inclusive Excellence Leadership Award from the University of Florida - COM Jacksonville. She was also recognized as an Exceptional Woman in Medicine by Castle Connolly in 2022 and 2023 and selected as a TOP Certified Cardiologist by Jacksonville Magazine in 2023. Dr. Velarde’s extensive body of work includes over 100 publications and a comprehensive textbook on cardiovascular disease in women. She is a widely respected figure in the medical field.

2024 DORION-BURT HEART OF GOLD Dr. Davy Parrish Volunteers in Medicine is proud to present Dr. Davalu “Davy” Parrish with its 2024 Dorion-Burt Heart of Gold Award. Davy is a Jacksonville humanitarian and visionary who dedicated her career, spanning more than thirty years, to serving at-risk children and families.

A recognized authority on serving at-risk children and teens, Davy is possibly best recognized for her role as President and CEO of The Bridge of Northeast Florida (The Bridge). The Bridge was founded in 1982 by a group of medical providers formerly known as Family Health Services. A comprehensive year-round after school and summer camp program for inner-city children, The Bridge was located at 1824 N. Pearl Street on Jacksonville’s Northside. Davy led the Bridge’s renovation of an aging school into a new facility located in Springfield named the Weaver Zone, which for years served as an epicenter for teens, and where more than 150 youth interacted daily in a safe and fun learning place.

Under Davy’s guidance, The Bridge was destined to eventually serve more than 3,500 children, ages 6-18, with medical and healthcare needs as well as educational and social programs designed to enhance their lives. The Bridge partnered with The Jaguars Foundation in an age-appropriate sexuality education program, Straight Talk, for youth ages 10-17, which was aimed at reducing teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

Under Davy’s leadership, The Bridge grew from one building to a campus including five buildings, eight satellite programs throughout the city and a Duval County Public Schools partnership for a national pilot public school.

Dr. Davy Parrish continued as CEO and President of The Bridge until her retirement in 2013, her work in the community having been recognized by the Governor’s Heartland Award in 1997, the One Jax Humanitarian Award in 1999, the Florida Times Union EVE Award in 2009, Gateway Girl Scouts Women of Distinction Award in 2011, and many others, including the Women of Color Education Service Award. After retirement, Dr. Parrish stayed on with the Bridge in an advisory capacity and as a mentor and volunteer, keeping up with many of the former students. Eventually, The Bridge merged with The Boys and Girls Clubs of Northeast Florida.
