For those of you who are new here, we are so glad you picked up our project. We are an entirely student-run fashion magazine made up of 250 students participating in our 20 business, content and editorial teams. Our organization produces two print magazines each year and hosts numerous events on campus. Followingadi{cultlastyear, wewere welcomed with more new members than ever before as students returned to campus. Students of all backgrounds and interests were ready and excited to join our organization and share the love of fashion. This meant more new voices, ideas and passion for our magazine while still embodying the legacy that past VIM editors created.

Westartedouryearozstrongwithover250 membersinattendanceatourfirstmeeting andkickedoztheyearwithameetandgree at the new Graduate Hotel in East Lansing. Memberswereecstatictofinallyinteract with their peers in a more personal setting. Throughout the semester, we introduced speakers from the fashion industry, including professionals from TJX, Vineyard Vines, GQ and The Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship that gave our members valuable advice and insight. One of our goals this semester was to provide our members with resources to succeed in their desired industries so we also hosted a career development meeting to provide students with resume, portfolio and cover letter tools. Weareimmenselyproudof ourstaz for adapting to fully in-person meetings. Our directors and team members are the backbone of this magazine and they have consistently shown a willingness to succeed and push through every obstacle. Without theirdedicationandconstantezort,we would not be able to produce two print magazines in just nine months. Our members are not just a part of VIM. They are full-time students, employees, siblings, friends, entrepreneurs and future leaders. We could not do this without each and every member. With that, we hope you enjoy our Fall 2021 edition of VIM Magazine.

FASHION’S NEW FRONTIER: NEO-WESTERN CHARM

It wasn’t long ago when fashionably seasoned cowboy boots were paired with fringed leather vests. Now, in 2021, the classic Western American style is being recycled once again. Often reconstructed to fit different aesthetics, its practicality has continued to serve a variety of people across generations. This Wild West fashion was first seen in the 1800s when the United States was famous for its gunslingers. Ranchers roamed the fields in tall leather boots to shield their legs while wearing a wide cowboy hat for protection from the elements. Nearly two centuries later, many are

seen using cowboy boots to lengthen the leg in elegant silk dresses or donning bedazzled cowboy hats as the ultimate party accessory. Cowboy hats and boots have been circulating steadily on the runway since the release of Ralph Lauren’s Fall 2016 ready-to-wear collection. The show consisted of traditional Wild West clothing with modern patterns and muted colors. The show made headlines in the fashion industry for its creativity and went on to inspire many other designers. In Spring 2017, designer Anna Sui released her ready-to-wear collection “Miss American

Pie,” which represented old Americana shedding its skin. The collection stood out with its use of vibrant colors and ability to turn more practical clothing choices into what many considered to be works of art. With Sui’s floral-printed prairie dresses and fringe leather jackets, it was obvious how significant of an impact Western American clothing has had on fashion. Both Ralph Lauren and Anna Sui collections’ were major influences on bringing Wild West clothing back into fashion, but perhaps the most notable collection to don the look was Calvin Klein’s Spring 2018 ready-to-wear collection.

These chic looks featured refined silks and luxe leathers that satisfied Klein’s mission to balance Old Western luxury and contemporary twists. In tying modern clothing pieces with Western accents, Klein created his own Neo-Western genre. The Western look is not new to the runway, but it wasn’t until recently that it hit the closets of those outside the industry. The look became popular in 2019 following the release of rapper Lil Nas X’s music video for “Old Town Road,” which featured him and other celebrities wearing intricately embroidered jackets and cowboy boots. After the song and video went viral, other celebrities including Cardi B and Beyoncé were seen wearing stylish leather chaps and pointed cowboyinspired boots. And at the 2021 Met Gala, Jennifer Lopez stayed loyal to the Wild West by wearing a floor-length

gown, a wide cowboy hat and a faux fur cape straddling her shoulders. Thanks to Lil Nas X, the “yeehaw agenda” is in full force and the Wild West aesthetic is back in fashion. The momentum of refurbished Western fashion isn’t slowing down any time soon. And similar to NeoWestern runway looks, this movement has more to do with mainstream trends. As shown in Sui’s collection, it’s very practical and accessible to all types of people. In the last year, comfort became one of the largest selling points for clothing brands, seen in examples like Levi’s loose denim jeans gaining popularity. Their large pockets are not only convenient, they also follow the Western trend, originating from the Wild West as the denim was meant to be spacious for everyday ranchers — which in today’s terms, may translate into walking miles on college campuses or needing space for a phone and accessories. While certain trendy prints and silhouettes may decline, spacious denim, comfortable leathers and practical boots are not going anywhere. These Western influences will be around for the long haul.

Participating in ethical practices like reusing, sharing, and thrifting clothes is a way to protect the environment from the harms of fast fashion. Beyondthebenefitof preventing clothing waste, thrifting helps by not contributing to the additional waste from producing, packaging and shipping new clothes. Buying new clothes is exciting and can be a hard habit to break since it is such a normalized partof society. However, finding new life in clothes worn by other people is a great alternative, and the low costs of thrifting can make fashion more accessible. It also allows for creativity and uniqueness in clothing since each item is hand picked. Thrifting doesn’t just happen at stores like Goodwill or Salvation Army. Digital thrifting sites like Depop, Shopify, Ebay, ThredUP, The Real Real and Poshmark allow people to post the clothes they aren’t wearing anymore and resell them, whether on consignment or directly to the consumer. This way, customers areabletosearchforspecific pieces and potentially negotiate with the seller for a price they can agree on. Thrifting not only helps relieve the planet, but it also grows one’s personal sense of style. Fashionlovers can shop sustainably to create their own special look while still aiming to reduce overconsumption, whether it’s fast fashion or from the thrift VIM 22store.

Country Club Chic

Country clubs have often been viewed as elite establishments wheretherichgetinebriatedoz expensive booze and play golf or tennis between dips in the pool. Created in the late 19th century, country clubs were initially designed for upper-class Americans andoftenozeredamyriadof facilities, sprawling land and multiple high-end dining options, shops and golf courses. While the understanding that country clubs areonlyforthea|uentisstillcommon, more people attend them than ever before. And with the growing popularity of country clubs, there comes the growth of country club attire. While the fashion industry has changed, tennis attire has remained very true to itself over the decades. Tennis has long been associated with the upper classes of society as those who frequented country clubs often gathered to play the sport. In the 19th century, a mandate was proposed requiring tennis playerstowearall-whiteoutfitstoavoidthe presence of sweat stains. According to Robert J. Lake in his book “A Social History of Tennis in Britain and Routledge Handbook of Tennis: History, Culture and Politics,” this all-white clothing requirement was heavily influencedbytheVictorianeradueto its symbolization of ‘purity and virtue, reflectingtheself-perceptionsof the class from which tennis derived most of its players.’

Tennis fashion has evolved over time. From the long kilt skirts and corsets of the 1900s to modern looks with pleated tennis skirts, polos, shorts and cardigans loosely knotted over the shoulders, people still choose to do all-white, sleek looks when hitting the courts.

New Age Healing

30 VIM

While holistic techniques have been in practice for thousands of years, they are becoming increasingly popular as more people integrate these practices into their daily lives. When used medicinally, the term holistic refers to the overall well-being of an individual. While Western medicine only targets illness and disease of the body, holistic medicine goes a step further than healing just physical ailments. “[Holistic practices] seeks the answers to these two questions: what does this person need in order to heal? Or what does this person need to remove from their lives in order to heal?” said Dr. Nisha Callen, a homeopathic doctor. “The journey of the person to illness and the testing, which is very different from conventional doctoral testing, creates that window of opportunity to heal.” Dr. Callen said that abundance prevents an individual from living a full holistic life, which can make living a fully holistic life difficult. “Most of the diseases we have today are diseases of abundance,” she said. “Abundance of food, abundance of stress and abundance of rest (lack of movement). Then, added on top of this is an abundance of infection, pollution and mold.” Living holistically requires cutting out these abundances or finding better alternatives. Some common practices of holistic treatments include herbal medicine in the form of teas or supplements, or aromatherapy, which uses essential oils that help with psychological well-being. Another well known holistic practice is meditation, which can involve breathing exercises, interpersonal writing, acupuncture and wellness coaching. In recent years, one natural treatment that has gained popularity is cannabidiol or CBD. CBD is the second active ingredient in cannabis, but it does not cause the high associated with cannabis. CBD oils are commonly used to treat insomnia, anxiety, inflammation and in some cases, tobacco or heroin addiction. The oils can range in price from $10 to $400 depending on volume, strength and type of the product. If you are looking to take holistic practices one step further, you can incorporate CBD into your morning routine by adding hemp to your tea. There is plenty of evidence that CBD from hemp can provide mental alertness and taste good when added to tea. These simple steps will help you grow into a better you. Many people can find healing by practicing holistic medicine and incorporating CBD products into their lives. Beginning the process of living holistically can look daunting, but the first step is to view your body as a temple. You can start to do this by feeding yourself with nourishing foods, and you will begin your holistic journey. Words/Style: Kari Eickholdt and Nina Cascardo Photo: Lauren Snyder Glam: Olivia Simone

This relates back to the ancient Chinese philosophy of yin and yang, translating to dark and light. While the two halves are oppositional to each other, both sides must work together to achieve balance and harmony. To truly understand yin and yang, it is crucial to look at each side individually. Within the symbol, yin is the dark side, often representing feminine energy, coldness, softness or passivity. Think of yin as a woman with shadowy features residing in the moon’s gloom, waiting to come out when her counterpart awakens the light in her. On the other side, yang is the light side, representing masculine energy, brightness and warmth. Imagine yang as a man with radiant features representing the sun’s rays with his energy. Both rely on each other’s actions to complete their own missions, just like the sun waits on the moon to complete its nighttime shadows so that the sun can begin its daytime shine radiant features representing the sun’s rays with his energy.

There is a renaissance happening in scientificresearchof thegutmicrobiome, and that interest has led to many great discoveries, but we’re barely scratching the surface,” Swets said. “I see research heading in the direction of personalized microbiome therapies designed to optimize each individual’s microbial fingerprint.” While there is still more research to bedoneinthisfield, thereisenough evidence to argue for a correlation between gut health and mental health. In the near future, scientists may be able to pursue personalized microbiome therapies, but for now, it appears that fueling your body properly can set you up to better combat symptoms of anxiety and depression. It is time to trust your gut. And remember, eat your veggies and probiotics! 38 VIM

Furthermore, the scrutinization of women — how they look and act, what they wear, and who they talk to — is still prevalent. With these conditions in mind, and the idea of fashion often being an outlet for these women, the backstage culture and the relationships formed can be a safe space for those looking to bare their true selves without the risk of criticism.

Without these moments of closeness, nights out and runway shows alike would lack a certain passion that is sparked by the feelings of support andconfidencefrombondingwithothersi comfortable environment. Knowing one’s biggest supporters sit right behind the stage builds a feeling of invincibility that makes even the harshest critic’s remarks seem small. Outer beauty becomes infinitelymoreappealingwhenone’sin is just as apparent, proving these interactions are crucial to the process of fashion presentation. These small glimpses of life behind-the-scenes show us that fashion is not reliant on glamour alone, but instead consists of chaotically beautiful backstage moments.

This experience is not exclusive to a certain type of person. Instead, these bonding opportunities can happen to anyone, anywhere. Whether it’s someone walking down the aisle, a model strutting down the runway at Fashion Week or a twentysomething on a friend’s night out, the intimate pre-event interactions often stick with them and provide them a feeling of comfort in even the most stressful situations. In these backstage moments, vulnerability is encouraged. The world often expects a stonefaced, guard-up demeanor. Therefore, when one is behind-the-scenes — whether that’s backstage of a show or a friend’s tiny apartment bathroom — it is important to counter such stereotypes with openness.
