On October 15th,studentsingrades 11and12wereofferedthe opportunity to take ACT SchoolDayTesting.ACT hasindicated thatscoreswillbeavailableintwoto eightweeksfollowingthe test. Studentswho havecreated theirMyACTaccountshouldbe abletoaccesstheir scores digitallyearlierthan thepaper copyof scores senttothe school.

VeteransDayis afederalholiday thatisannuallyobserved on November11tohonormilitaryveteransofthe UnitedStates Armed Forces. Againthis year, VillaServes,led by Audrey Wilibanks’25and InesLemee’25,placed over50pinwheels atthe entrancetoour schoolin honor ofourmilitaryfamilies andrelatives. Inaddition,wordsofgratitudeandappreciation toourveteranswere writteninthankyoucardsorganizedand providedby GemmaCafasso’26 andEllenDiDomenico’26.

DiversityCafé

Novemberis NationalNativeAmericanHeritageMonth and isatimeto celebrateandpaytributeto therichancestryand traditionsof NativeAmericans. Diversity Café’ hasa large bannerinthecafeteriaremindingstudents of thisheritage,and aselection ofbooks with anemphasisonthe localgroups such as theLenapeandAlgonquin,hasbeenplacedin thelibrary.  Eachweek,announcementswill bemadehonoringthe past andthepresentNativeAmericans.

eannualJuniorRingliturgy,honoringthe students fromVilla Walsh’sClass of 2026,wascelebratedinSt.LucyChapelonTuesday, October22nd. isbelovedAcademytradition invites thestudents tore ectonthefriendshipsthat bond them together,to celebrate allthattheyhavealreadyachieved,andto encouragethem towalk wheretheir roadswilllead them.

St. LucyChapelwas lledwith Academystudentsaswellasthe parentsofthe Class of 2026towitnessthismilestone andto join inprayerthankingGodfortheblessingsHeprovides through ourfriends andfamilies. Inadditiontotheirrings,students each received apinkroseto commemorate thebeautyofthe friendships thattheyhaveformedhere. VillaWalshAcademy’s Chorus,under thedirectionofMr.PaulDaher, contributed tothe beauty of the liturgy with theirvoices.Fr.LanceReis,retiredpriest from the DioceseofPatersonandfriend ofVillaWalsh,presidedatthe liturgy andblessedthejuniors’rings.

StudentsfromtheClassof2028tooka breakfromtheirdailyroutine tospenda dayonretreaton Wednesday,October2nd,at theChurch ofSt.JamesinBaskingRidge.

Studentshadthe opportunity to spendtimetogrowin theirbondof friendshipwitheachother,andwith Jesus.In additiontoice-breaker games and lotsoflaughter,thestudents,accompaniedandled by eologyinstructorsLaura WilliamsandColetteGeraghty,wereable tospendtimein adorationof theBlessed Sacramentandparticipate intheSacramentofReconciliation aswellasmass.ey returnedto campusrenewedandrefreshed,andmoredeeplyconnected toeach other,as aclass,than theywerewhen theyle.

NovemberAllSoulsRemembrance

Onceagain,VillaWalsh placed a“Wreath ofRemembrance”outside theBusinessOfficeinBrowneHallforstudents,faculty,andparents toprayforthe soulsofourbeloveddead.Allare invited to write thename of adeceased loved one on apurplecrossandaffixitto theribbons, sothateverytimewepassthe Wreath,wecan prayfor thesalvationoftheirsoulsandthe consolationoftheir families.In advanceofAllSoul’s Day on November2,students andfaculty gave thenamesoftheirbeloveddead totheSisters,sothattheywould berememberedattheirdailymasses throughout themonth of November. Itis agreat giandprivilege to offerthis comforttothe membersofourschoolcommunity.  Eternalrest grant untothem, O Lord, andletperpetuallight shine uponthem. Maythey, andallthe soulsof thefaithfuldeparted, throughthemercyofGod,rest in peace. Amen.

7th/8thGradeRetreat

e 7th and8th graders wentontheir yearly retreaton Tuesday, October22.emiddleschool studentstraveledtogetherto Christthe KingChurchinNew Vernon,NJ.e morningstarted withabeautifulMassinthe church. AerMass,studentsengaged infunicebreakersandgames- includingmusical chairs -to strengthentheir bonds andbuildcommunity.eytooktime for personalre ection andjournaling,focusingonthethemeof God’s immenselovefor each ofus. e dayalso included a deepdive into theProdigal Sonscripturepassage,wherestudentsengaged in meaningfuldiscussions aboutthe Father’sunconditionallove and Hiswelcomingembrace. isretreat wasa wonderfulopportunity for ourmiddleschoolstudents tostepawayfromtheirdailyroutines andgrowcloserto Jesusthroughprayerandfellowship.

AP CAPSTONE

Startingwith APSeminarduringsophomoreyear,and continuingwithAPResearchin junioryear, thecoursesuse aninterdisciplinaryapproach todevelopthecritical thinking, research,collaboration,timemanagement,andpresentation skillsneededforcollege.

On October 18,AP Researchstudents metvirtually with JuliannaMcKenna’17. Currently agraduate student at theUniversityofChicago,Juliannadescribed her research experienceattheCenterforAutismatChildren's National Hospital.Her descriptionofher role,includingthe various methodologies employed bytheresearchteamand their safeguardingofparticipantcon dentiality,proved helpful for ourresearchers,whohave beendevelopingtheirown methods for data collectionandlearningaboutethicalconsiderations when workingwithhuman subjects.

emajority ofourresearchersdeterminedthatsurveysor interviews,orboth,bestalignwith theirresearchquestions,and have beenexamininghowtorecruitparticipantsandformulate goodquestions.Articulatingtheprecisenature of theirfuture interactionswithstudy participants iscriticaltothe rstmajor APResearch deadline: theinquiry proposal.isproposal will besubmittedtothenewly-formedVillaEthicsReviewBoard, whichwillensurethatthe studiesareethicalandsafe,thatthey protectthestudents andcommunity, andthat theycomplywith schoolpolicies.

Ourresearchersarealso learninghow tocommunicate effectivelywithprofessional scholars torequest hard-to-access information. Sofar,we’vefoundthat professionalsatmajor institutions (includingthe American PsychiatricAssociation, theUniversityofNewMexico,and the UniversityofBristol)are gladto sharedata, questionnaires, andstudies.Ourresearchers

arerealizing the truth of whatSteve Jobssaid,describinghisown experienceasa twelve-year oldwhenhe called BillHewlitttoask for sparecomputer parts,andgotthem (aswellasa job):“Most peoplenever pickup thephone,most peopleneverask.Andthat’s whatseparates thepeoplewho dothingsfromthe peoplethatjust dreamaboutthem.”

efreshmanvolleyballteamclosed outtheir season with a13-1 record.Atthe Madisontournament,they cameclosetodefeating Morristown HS,but aerachallenging game,theycameinsecond.

CrossCountryVarsity

eVWA crosscountry teamcompletedOctoberwith3major championship wins andastrong nishat the Shore Coaches Invitational.  eteamwillcompetenextattheNJSIAA statenonpublicBchampionship,wheretheywillattempttodefendtheir 2023 title.

eteambeganthemonthofOctobercompetinginthe “F” division raceattheShoreCoachesInvitationaland nished2nd place to Pingryinthe eldof38teams.  MargaretBoler‘25was theindividualracewinner witha timeof19:08onthe challenging HolmdelPark course. AmeliaKleinle’26, InesLemee’25,and MarthaSmart’25all nishedin thetop20in the eldof171 runners.

On October 15th,theteamwon its 4thconsecutiveand9thoutof 14overall NJAC “smallschools”Championship. Inadominant performance,VWA had5 runners in thetop10placesinthe eldof 122 runnersand25teams. Leadingtheway was Margaret Boler’25 (2ndplace),BlytheDudley’26 (4thplace), MarthaSmart’25(6th), AmeliaKleinle’26(9th),andInes Lemee’25(10th). Margaret Boler’25(18:35), MarthaSmart’25(19:39), and AmeliaKleinle’26 (20:00)allrecordedpersonal best 5 km times.

On October 22nd,the team competedat Central Parkof MorrisCounty inthe Morris CountyChampionships.  Aer nishing1st in2022and2ndin2023,the girlsreclaimed theircounty title,winningtheir 2nd ever Morris County Championship!eVikings wereled bytop 10 nishesfrom Blythe Dudley’26(2nd),MargaretBoler’25(3rd),and MarthaSmart’25(9th).

eteamtraveledtoBlair AcademyonOctober30th to competeinthe NJISAAPrep BChampionships. Wrappingup anoutstandingmonth ofcompetition,the team earnedthe1st place championshiptrophy,scoring27 points.GillSt.Bernards was2ndwith88pointsin the eldof10teams.  Blythe Dudley’26wastheindividualchampion,followed closely by MargaretBoler’25(2nd),AmeliaKleinle’26(4th), Martha Smart(6th),and ErinLyons’25in14thplace.

CountryMiddleSchool

Octoberwas averybusymonthforthe Middle School Cross Countryteam.Itstartedwith agreatshowinginDover, where LucySmart’29and CarolineCaughey’29crossed the nishline,capturing rstandsecondplace. Bailey Gardner’30 ranherbest race thatday,andElodieTuck’29 and JoellePaolino’29rounded outthetop ve nishersfor VillaWalsh.EmilyO’Malley’29 and EavanMartin’29 also hadstrong nishes.Villahosted atoughPequannockteam where CatherineAzares’29ranthe 1.75miletrekinunder10 minutes,andAvaKloster’30 hadher personalbestthatday!
