Doris' Musiksalon

View of records and record sleeves, Salon Villa Sträuli 2007

For a few days the Villa Sträuli’s golden salon is home to the Sträuli family’s complete record collection. The records, covers, and paper sleeves coalesce visually to form an installation that charges the entire room with a near-audible polyphony. At the same time, the records become an icon, appearing as a bygone medium, discarded, but all the more expansive in their dynamic presence. Doris Sträuli was a pianist herself, as can clearly be seen in the identity of the record collection. The collection even includes unique examples, shellac records, on which single piano pieces by Doris are recorded.

Due to unforeseen circumstances Janich had to reduce her fiveand-a-half-month residency to a short-term stay.

During her residency at the Villa Sträuli, Katharina Hohmann was selected to participate in the exhibition: Von Ort zu Ort (From Place to Place) organised by the International Festival of Light in Winterthur. Her project “Lost Chandeliers” was on view in the Villa Sträuli’s garden and in Winterthur’s municipal park. For this project she reasssembled lamps from torn-down buildings in the center of the city and installed them on three spots in public space. She also realised the project “If you please, draw me a sheep!” in collaboration with Winterthur-based artist Katharina Henking. The two artists, in reaction of a public anti-migration campaign by the right wing party in Switzerland, were sent images and objects concerning the eponyme sentence by Antoine de Saint-Exupérys novella “Petit Prince” (1943). The contributions by over 100 participants were shown in an exhibition at the Galerie Kunsttreppe. Since 2007 she has been the head of the programme: Option Construction: Art & Espaces, at HEAD (Haute école d’art et de design) Genève. She lives and works in Geneva (CH) and in Berlin. katharinahohmann.de

Nora Ikstena is a versatile author who has published short stories and novels, written screenplays, and worked as a journalist and associate editor for a number of Latvian publications. A member of various Latvian cultural committees, Ikstena documents and is herself an active force behind the cultural and political development of her country. She is the recipient of several prizes, and her books have been translated into many languages.

In her installations, Julia Mensch, an artist from Buenos Aires, explores individual histories, seeing in them a dimension entirely different from that found in official historical accounts. By tracing the history of individuals, she allows these individuals to be both re-experienced and reinvented. In addition to her work as an artist, Mensch has taught art at various school levels. During her residency she investigated the history of the Villa Sträuli and its last resident and owner Doris Sträuli in the context of the fight for women’s suffrage in Switzerland. julia-mensch.blogspot.ch
