The Villanova School of Business Developing Business Leaders for a Better World®

Since 1922, the Villanova School of Business has been a leader among business schools in fostering an environment that enables students and other members of our community to develop the knowledge, experience and values needed for a lifetime of learning.

Our holistic approach includes a liberal arts foundation and collaboration with the business and academic communities to create, share and apply knowledge that connects theory to practice. Our curriculum encourages students to explore the interconnected nature of business disciplines and to shape innovative and strategic solutions that address contemporary business problems.

Our Augustinian Catholic mission calls upon us to put forth truth, community and service in all that we do. These values help make our leaders more knowledgeable and capable, our organizations stronger, and our purpose clearer. Therefore, the role of our Augustinian values in business education is not only strong, it is an imperative for developing leaders who can move us forward in our tireless pursuit of positive change for a better world.

About VSB

We strive to create a learning environment unprecedented in the world of business education— one that transforms lives, positively impacts society, nurtures creativity, assures an analytical approach, provides a global perspective and develops ethical leaders. As we celebrate a century of success, we have reflected on our rich legacy and look forward to shaping a bright future.

At the Villanova School of Business, we bring together world-class experts and exceptional students to cultivate an appreciation for the interconnected nature of the business world.

Our extended community of alumni, parents and corporate partners is a key component in our ability to deliver a high-quality education. In partnership, we can expand our boundaries of current business knowledge to develop new and better practices that take into account an ever-changing global economy. The VSB community—faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends—is our greatest strength, and I am honored to serve as dean. Our shared Villanova experience represents our continued commitment to finding new ways of increasing our impact through the Augustinian principles of Veritas, Unitas and Caritas

Developing business leaders for a better world through the Augustinian values of truth, community, caring and leading through service.

The Role of Values in Business Education

VERITAS

In any given day, business leaders make countless decisions. Whether it's managing people or directing investments, growing a business or creating a new one, every decision offers an opportunity for positive change—the potential to advance our world and seek what makes us better. Leadership that thinks and acts responsibly and serves a greater purpose demands more than knowledge and natural ability. It requires a deeply held commitment to pursuing excellence and the optimal outcome for our organization and our society.

Our values are present throughout all elements of the VSB experience. Across our students, faculty, staff, alumni and partners, we are rooted in our Augustinian tradition, but also restless to become what we are not yet. This sense of commitment and shared purpose creates a strong community of humble servant leaders who together continually strive to build a better world in all that we do.

At the Villanova School of Business, our Augustinian values provide the framework for our mission and for our approach to business education. Driven by the ideals of truth, community and service to others, we create an environment where students strengthen both their intellectual curiosity and their values. They build the competencies to succeed, to pursue lifelong learning and to truly become business leaders for a better world.

Rooted in Ideals for a Better World

The strength of Villanova's community, rooted in these shared values, creates a unique learning environment and enables our students to achieve exceptional outcomes.

We readily engage in Villanova traditions such as St. Thomas of Villanova Day of Service and Special Olympics, but it doesn't end there. Service happens every day in our community. From alumni mentoring, to socially responsible investing, to social enterprise consulting, there is a shared recognition of our good fortune and a steadfast commitment to helping others find success.

Our values are at the heart of our approach to business education. We passionately pursue truth in our curriculum, blending a strong liberal arts core with solid business fundamentals. Exposure to a breadth of topics enables our students to build strong analytical and critical thinking skills and to become creative problem-solvers who can tackle challenges large and small in our world.

Our community advances the student experience even further. With small class sizes, VSB students engage with faculty and collaborate in and out of the classroom.

Above all, we embrace a commitment to service.

98.9% of VSB undergraduates find successful full-time place ment within six months of graduation with an average starting salary of $69,031. Our MBA students enjoy an average salary increase of 25% following the completion of their degrees. More importantly, our students graduate with an orientation to serve as responsible leaders who use their knowledge for making a difference.

These interactions span research, case competitions, professional development, mentorship and much more. In fact, students and alumni often say our faculty feel as passionate about their students' success as their own. That emphasis on helping others succeed underlies much of VSB. With individualized academic and professional development counseling, career and executive coaching, and a robust lineup of academic and professional societies, our students build a network of supporters devoted to positive outcomes.

Leadership

Ensure students work well in diverse teams with colleagues from different backgrounds and unique perspectives.

Technology, data and analytics

Communications

Develop students to become better business writers and to communicate effectively to advocate for novel concepts and convey complex recommendations.

THINKING & PROBLEM-SOLVING

The rapidly evolving business climate demands more from leaders by way of resilience and adaptability. Building upon our strengths in critical thinking and creative problem-solving, we look to strengthen competencies in four critical areas:

Promote ethical servant leadership, focused on advancing the organization's mission; helping others; and advancing our world through innovation, growth and fairness.

CRITICAL

For our students

Foster agile thinking around the use of technology, data and analytics to solve business problems across every discipline.

Teams

For our community

We commit to a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment. A community is at its best when everyone feels an equal sense of welcome and belonging. That happens through a greater sense of awareness not only for others' perspectives but how our own biases may keep others from feeling connected to the community. After all, when we feel welcome, we participate confidently and contribute without hesitation. We benefit from the diversity of thought and experiences to fuel growth and innovation—whether it's in the classroom, in research or in the workplace.

Additional efforts will promote research with tangible impact within and beyond academia and facilitate more faculty collaboration on research, paired with the mentorship, training and support faculty need at different stages of their careers. Together, these elements will bring new ideas to life in the classroom, attract and retain top scholars, positively impact society, and increase faculty satisfaction through the full trajectory of their careers.

We will grow further through research. Generating new knowledge ties directly to our pursuit of truth but also aligns with our designation as a national university. Advancing scholarship requires an investment in infrastructure—establishing the appropriate motivators, incentives and resources necessary to support quality research. In concert with the University strategic plan, we are also focused on increasing funding and expanding student engagement in faculty research. That includes engaging graduate fellows as well as undergraduate students interested in research through the expansion of the VSB Research Scholars program.

For our faculty

VSB / 5 VSB Story

Our values make us strong in many ways, but we also recognize our work continues. As the custodians of our Augustinian heritage, we must continue to invest in what moves us toward a better world. We asked all our stakeholders, “What are the most important ways we could do more to advance our students, strengthen our community and support our faculty to achieve greater impact?” In true Villanova fashion, our entire community—students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and other partners—eagerly stepped forward with ideas and guidance to shape our priorities and further our mission.

Inspired by a Restless Heart

To that end, we established an Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) within VSB to foster that sense of belonging throughout our community. For example, we have Diversity Champions throughout VSB to help students, faculty and staff become more conscious of differences based on heritage, gender identity and sexual orientation. We are also examining opportunities to make our curriculum more inclusive. These efforts are critical to attracting students of diverse backgrounds and also underrepresented faculty whose perspectives enrich our community. Meaningful progress on DEI is also of the utmost importance to our employers, who share our commitment to these goals.
