OFFICE FOR MISSION AND MINISTRY

Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.
St. Augustine
PROGRAM PRAYER

Good and Gracious God, we give you thanks for this day, for your presence in our lives and this opportunity to share faith and friendship.
We pray now for the grace to emulate the saintly lives of Augustine, Monica and Thomas of Villanova.
We ask that you fll us with the passion and courage that inspired Augustine’s search for truth and wisdom; Bless us with the prayerful persistence of Monica, who entrusted all things to you;
Give us the generous and selfess heart of Thomas, so that we might be able to share our talents, skills and abilities with everyone, for the common good of this community.
And we ask for these things, as we ask for all good things, in the name of your Son, our brother, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
HISTORY OF THE CENTER
The Center for Faith and Learning was launched in Fall 2010 by Beth Hassel, PBVM, DMin, founding director, as a direct response to the University’s strategic plan and in collaboration with the Ofce for Mission & Ministry.
PURPOSE
• The Center for Faith and Learning provides opportunities for students and faculty to explore the vocation of the mind and the depths of the Spirit in the way of Augustine, who searched for knowledge within the context of community.
• The Center promotes critical inquiry among friends who enter into dialogue dedicated to the integration of faith and learning, a hallmark of Augustinian pedagogy.
• The Center for Faith and Learning seeks to provide opportunities for students, faculty and staf to grow in knowledge of the intersections between and among religion, faith, learning and lived experience.
• The Center for Faith and Learning is rooted in the Catholic/Christian intellectual tradition and is a place where transformative, intellectual life is in dialogue with ALL faith traditions.
• Center for Faith & Learning, the Faith & Learning Scholars program, in particular, brings faculty and students together to:
» discuss selected readings,
» share lived experiences and
» support one another in their restless search for God.
FAITH AND LEARNING SCHOLARS PROGRAM
MEMBERSHIP
Villanova students are nominated to the Scholars program by current program Mentors or Scholars or are self-nominated. They are selected each Spring semester on the basis of their demonstrated interest in the life of the mind and matters of faith.
Student members are designated as Faith & Learning Scholars.
Faculty who have demonstrated special dedication to the well-being of students and willingness to public witness in their own faith traditions are nominated (or can self nominate) to the program by current Scholars or Mentors and are invited to join. Faculty members are designated as Faith & Learning Mentors.
Through the interaction of the two, the Center seeks to prepare the next generation of students to integrate faith and reason into their emerging adult lives and encourage student scholars to consider advanced degrees and careers in the academy as a future vocation.
STRUCTURE
Scholars and Mentors form a single, intentional faith community. To promote personal interaction and intimate discussion among participants, three smaller communities are formed. Student Scholars enter the program in their sophomore year and remain in their respective communities for three years or until graduation. Faculty Mentors are likewise assigned to a specifc community and remain as members until the graduation of student members. Villanova faculty serve as Faith & Learning Mentors at will.
Communities meet twice per semester for dinner-dialogues, sharing their faith and learning journey together. Other opportunities for fellowship are scheduled throughout the academic year.
PATRONS OF OUR COMMUNITIES
As each new academic year begins, our hope is that both students and faculty will be inspired by these saintly lives and encourage each other to passionate and courageous pursuit of truth and wisdom, persistence in challenging times and selfess, generosity with their God-given talents, skills and abilities for the good of all.

St. Augustine was a passionate scholar, writing 113 books and at least 800 recorded sermons. He was an eloquent and courageous defender of the faith, during an especially turbulent time in the Church.
St. Monica, mother of Augustine, was a powerful example of perseverance in the midst of hardship. She is revered even today for her dedication to Augustine, trust in God and continual prayer for the conversion of her son to Christianity.
St. Thomas of Villanova was a brilliant student and later an extraordinary professor, yet he gave all of this up to serve God and the poor of Valencia. Well known for his personal austerity, his selfessness and generous attention to the needs of others earned him the title Father to the Poor.
INSPIRATION & SYMBOLS
Both the University and the Center for Faith and Learning draw inspiration for their work from the rich intellectual legacy of Saint Augustine and those who followed him on a restless search for God.
The chief elements of the University crest are a pierced and faming heart resting on the Bible, surrounded by laurel leaves. These recall Augustine’s conversion experience, as he heard the words, Tolle Lege—take up and read! Augustine’s search for God was based on the passionate integration of faith and reason within a dialogical community of Veritas, Unitas, Caritas —truth, unity and love—the motto of the University.

The Center for Faith and Learning logo symbolizes the continuation of Augustine’s intellectual and theological legacy at Villanova through its faming heart centered on the book of knowledge.
FAITH & LEARNING SCHOLAR BECAUSE...
“There is a strong sense of community— it feels like extended family.”
“I love being a part of this completely unique program that ofers illuminating conversations with people you may have never had the chance to meet otherwise... and also because of the chocolate desserts.”
“I love the community of faculty and students from all diferent disciplines.”
Faith and Learning Mentors and graduating Scholars receive Faith and Learning Honor Cords as symbols of their ongoing commitment to the aspirations of the Center. The University crest and the Center logo are attached to one of a pair of cords. Each cord is red and gold in color.
RED represents FAITH. Lived faith requires courage, confdence, witness, even sacrifce. Red, too, is most associated with blood, the source of life.
GOLD represents WISDOM, higher ideals, understanding and enlightenment. The color symbolizes our commitment to search for truth, deeper understanding of the self and the soul. In the language of colors, gold is generous and giving, compassionate and loving. It is symbolic of a benefactor or patron, sharing wisdom, knowledge and wealth with others.

May these cords be a constant reminder, calling us always to exploration of the vocation of the mind and the depths of the Spirit in the way of Augustine, who searched for knowledge in the context of community
“It showed me that there is a vibrant community of faithful thinkers here on campus. We don’t get together too often but I leave the dinners full of new ideas and a lot of hope.”
“I have a mind prone to questioning and religion is one of the things that I think about.”
“I realized my faith is constantly strengthened by my peers and mentors who share the stories, experiences, and beliefs that have helped shape them into the wonderful people they are today.”

All kinds of things rejoiced my soul in their company— to talk and laugh, to do other kindnesses, to read pleasant books together, to pass from lightest jesting, to talk of deepest things and back again, to difer without rancor, to teach each other and to learn from each other. These and such things kindled a fame that fused our very souls together and made us one out of many.

All kinds of things rejoiced my soul in their company —to talk and laugh, to do other kindnesses, to read pleasant books together, to pass from lightest jesting, to talk of deepest things and back again, to difer without rancor, to teach each other and to learn from each other. These and such things kindled a fame that fused our very souls together and made us one out of many.
