Painting, gardening and counselling are her passions and the combination of all of these pursuits provide an opportunity for joyful, colourful works to hang in your home. Jennifer is a member of the Society of Mountain Artists and the Blackheath Art Society and exhibits in many local and non local exhibitions.

Ludwina studied Visual Education and Ceramic Design at the Limerick College of Art and Design in Ireland. A recent installation of Ludwina’s work, The Birdhouse Wall, can be seen at the eastern end of Main Street, Lithgow. Her pottery and sculptures are notable for their vivid colours. The giant, colourful flowers on the artist trail were designed and manufactured by Ludwina.

Loving brilliant colours and rich textures feeds her soul, keeps her mind open and her imagination alive.

KERRIE GRIFFITHS Kerry Griffiths is an artist with a passion for pen and ink and a splash of vivid colour. Her work is quirky with a strong element of detail over a range of subjects, from animals to beautiful art deco women, however owls remain her favourite. Kerry has come from a background in education and now follows her artistic passions.

ANNE GRAHAM

Anne’s work is always about people, their habitations and their things; she makes portraits about the real or imagined history of places and of people and assembles installations attempting to distill something of the subject. Anne collects tools, culinary implements, measuring devices, combs and brushes; all of these things relate to some kind of repeated human activity. These sounds and the rhythms of these activities are part of everyday life and the ordinary objects we use to order our world. Anne’s intention is to transform a known and ordinary thing into something new and not previously imagined.

SUMMER HILL SEWING EMPORIUM

Sarah teaches dressmaking and sewing in a delightfully readapted shearing shed on the historic property Forty Bends. The space is a haven of inspirations that has a filmset pop to each corner and cupboard. The backdrop is paddocks of commercial peonies that are blooming through November, destined for the Sydney florists. In the workshop, skills are taught in soft furnishing, vintage patterns, casual knits, and classic tailoring. From beginners to the advanced sewer, all levels are catered for. The emphasis is on wearability, sustainability and enjoying the process.

GANG GANG GALLERY

Gang Gang Gallery, Sharon Howard’s exciting new gallery, is housed in the heritage space of the old refreshments building of the Theatre Royal. Extensive renovations transformed the building into a beautiful creative Art Space, proudly featuring Contemporary Art and Objects of Art by emerging, regional and national artists. At Gang Gang Gallery we hope to inspire thought on the nature of Art and the impact Art has on our lives!

Wendy enjoys participating in community art and is part of the Lithgow Urban Artist Group. She enters in community group exhibitions such as Waste2Art and Lithgow Skulls. Her favourite way to create art is sitting in a café, a paddock or her front porch with a sketchpad and pen. Art for her is very social and she enjoys teaching as much as creating.

Gordon is a mixed-media artist exhibiting in solo and group shows in Lithgow and the Blue Mountains. He has a bachelors degree in Fine Arts, a graduate diploma in secondary education, and has received a Von Bertouch Gallery Award. LEILA CONSTABLE

Cathy and Steve believe in repurposing items that have outlived their use. Nearly all of Steve’s wooden items are made from recycled pallets, from his popular Adirondack chairs to his wine rackets and many more. Cathy likes to use many different mediums. Her woven bags, handmade material and rag rugs are made using just that – left over material. Old jeans become bags and oven mitts. Cathy also works with leadlight, stain glass, mosaic using leftover glass, and Alpaca felting. Yvonne Groves is a long time Portland resident and has been potting for 40 years. She is sharing studio space with Cathy and Steve. She creates a beautiful range of small sculptures, pots, platters and plates. She uses a colour mix of persian blues, copper reds, crackle whites and lustrous green to make beautiful ceramic art.

Leila Constable is resident Wiradjuri Artist at Hoardin’ Pavilion and Hunny Ant Art Gallery at Portland where she has a beautiful array of hand painted authentic Aboriginal Art, and a charming collection of nostalgic and eclectic treasures.

JENNY SEWELL

Jenny’s memories are the inspiration for her art and inform her creations. These come from her entire life – the landscape, country life, the little township of Portland – all provide fodder for her work. When not drawing, Jenny fills her time reading and gardening. These pastimes can lead to new inspiration. The solitude of life on small acreage leads her in new directions. Jenny’s strongest recollections have shaped her life, helping her create her artwork – such memories have stayed with her forever.

Letter to the Editor I refer to the Village Voice article ‘Lithgow Icon Highlighted at Local Government Conference’ (25th October). Let me set your readers straight – the Museum is not about to go up in smoke, we are not closing and have no intention of closing. There is a lot happening at the Museum and our Management Committee is hell-bent on growing and expanding the facility and providing the excellent experience our visitors have become accustomed to. The Firearms Regulation applying to museums has an exemption provision which was enacted in late August. We have submitted our exemption application to the Government and are awaiting their response. We led the charge on behalf of other museums in the State in opposing the Government’s ill-conceived Firearms Regulation. We see the need for like-minded museums to come together and in that vein, we are setting up a Museums Alliance where we can share and help one another across many fronts, such as training, legislative knowledge, archiving and advocacy. There are 63 Museum Permits in the State. Regards,

BACK TO HARTLEY CELEBRATED BY HUNDREDS OF LOCALS AND VISITORS

Crowd enjoyed the dancers, pipe band and market stalls. Story submitted by Dennis Limbert

Last Sunday saw hundreds of people flock to the Hartley Historic Village for the annual Back to Hartley Celebration. Opened by Lithgow City Mayor Ray Thompson under a magnificent clear blue sky a dedicated group of locals dressed in period costume and the Lithgow Living History group demonstrated the finer points of colonial rifles with a muzzle loading demonstration and firing. There was a good deal of entertainment on the day including the Lithgow Thistle Highland Dancers, the

Valley School of Highland Dancing, the Lithgow Highland Pipe Band and the St George Brass Band. Dancers from the Sally-Anne School of Dance also strutted their stuff. Kids were entertained with the jumping castle, face painting and the reptile show. Mums and dads were catered for with a variety of market stalls and food trucks. The 1st Blackheath Scout Group raised much needed funds with their sausage sizzle trailer. The vintage motor cycle display at Corney’s Garage was very popular as was viewing the inside of the 1830’s Hartley Court House. Many energetic people made use of the KewY-Ahn Bell Rock Heritage Walk, the Sculpture Walk and the Rowson’s River Walk, although the River Lett had a muchreduced flow as expected. Nevertheless, the walks are highly recommended when visiting Hartley Historic Village.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE ONE OF NSW’S OLDEST TIMBER TRUSS BRIDGES

The community is invited to have their say on a proposal to upgrade and restore McKanes Bridge in South Bowenfels near Lithgow. Minister for Regional Roads and Transport and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the NSW Government is providing $10 million for the project to ensure the beautiful timber-truss bridge continues to serve the community and maintain its heritage appearance. “I know the community of Lithgow loves this bridge and wants to see it restored properly for generations to come. That’s why we’re going out to the community for

their feedback on the proposed upgrade, so that they can be a part of this project,” Mr Toole said. “McKanes Bridge was built in 1893 and is one of only four remaining McDonald timber truss bridges in NSW. Its restoration would ensure one of the oldest examples of a McDonald timber truss bridge in NSW is conserved. “The bridge also provides a vital link between Jenolan Caves Road and the Great Western Highway for both locals and tourists. As the local Member and the Minister responsible, I’m really happy that we’re delivering this project for the community of Lithgow.” Transport for NSW has prepared a review of environmental factors (REF) to determine the environmental and social impacts for the restoration work, which is now on display for community information and comment. Mr Toole said the REF is on display at Lithgow City Council and Hampton Halfway Hotel Motel between 30 October and 20 November and explains the proposed restoration work involved and how it would be done. “I encourage the community to get down to their local display, take a look and give us their feedback,” Mr Toole said. To facilitate the upgrade of the bridge it is proposed McKanes Falls Road would be closed to traffic for about 12 months, with a detour in place via Jenolan Caves Road and the Great Western Highway. The detour is expected to add five minutes extra travel time. Members of the project team will be available to answer community questions about the REF and receive feedback during a drop-in session at Lithgow Plaza on Thursday 7 November between 12pm and 2pm and 4pm and 7pm, and at Old Hartley School Hall on Wednesday 13 November between 4pm and 7pm. Information about the REF is also available on the project website at rms.work/mckanesbridge Feedback on the REF and design will be considered and a submissions report will be published. Once the REF is determined Transport for NSW will complete the final design and prepare for major work.

THE GAUDRY WAS IN THE PINK FOR THE ANNUAL NATIONAL BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION BREAKFAST The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is Australia’s leading national body funding world-class, game-changing breast cancer research. Eight women lose their life every day to breast cancer.

Mrs Tina Case, who owns The Professionals Real Estate agency in Lithgow said, “It has been 15 years since Professionals Real Estate group started supporting National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) and every

office across NSW donates from the sale of every house to NBCF.” As Diamond Partners, Professionals have already raised over $3.4 million.” “Our office has been open for 12.5 years and we have been doing the breakfast in this format for about six years now. We are overwhelmed with the amount of local support we receive each year, 85 in attendance last Friday and close to $5,250 raised,” said Tina Case. Councillor Cass Coleman said, “This is one breakfast I always schedule into my planner, Tina and her staff constantly put on a professional well organised event, the amount of money raised will contribute to saving women’s lives across the country. It also gives me the opportunity to start the day with a hearty breakfast and catch up with Tina who is a childhood friend. We formerly lived down the street from one another.”

A new national survey that seeks to understand the life experiences of people living with severe and complex mental health issues is now live and seeking participants. Our Turn to Speak is the largest survey of its kind ever conducted in Australia. It is being led by SANE Australia’s Anne Deveson Research Centre in partnership with the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Melbourne, and with the support of the Paul Ramsay Foundation. Survey participants will be asked to share their experiences across a range of 14 different areas including housing, employment, education, healthcare, insurance and finance. The survey findings will help to inform SANE Australia’s advocacy priorities and contribute to policy change, as well as influencing resources and programs at a local, regional and national level. Anne Deveson Research Centre Director Dr Michelle Blanchard and University of Melbourne Honorary Senior Fellow explains that more than 690,000 Australians live with severe and complex mental health issues. This research will examine the individual experiences, whether positive or negative, of people living with these issues. “Data collected will be used to inform our future efforts as we work toward improved social outcomes and support for all Australians affected by complex mental health issues,” Dr Blanchard said. University of Melbourne research lead Dr Christopher

Groot, who also holds an appointment as Director of the Mental Illness Stigma Lab in the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences, said the survey will provide a unique opportunity for Australians living with severe and complex mental health issues to be heard. “We’re calling for 7000 people to take part in this comprehensive survey – online, over the phone, or inperson – so we can gain a deep understanding of how people living with severe and complex mental health issues are treated in Australia,” Dr Groot said. Paul Ramsay Foundation Chief Executive Officer Professor Glyn Davis AC explains it’s vital this information is collected. “This is much-needed data and has the potential to improve significantly the lives of these individuals and their families,” Professor Davis said. To be eligible to take part in the survey, you must be an Australian resident, aged 18 and over, who has been living with at least one of the following severe and complex mental health issues over the last 12 months: schizophrenia spectrum disorders, bipolar and related disorders, personality disorders, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, severe and ‘treatment-resistant’ depression and anxiety requiring multi-agency support. Visit www.ourturntospeak.com.au to take part in the online survey.

ANDREWGEE MP FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CALARE

Your Country Your Voice DROUGHT SUPPORT NOW AT $7.3 BILLION The Australian Government has so far, committed more than $7.3 billion to drought relief. It’s the biggest drought relief effort in our history.

2. SUPPORTING WIDER COMMUNITIES

I’ve told the Parliament that many farmers and communities are struggling with deteriorating drought conditions going into summer. It’s been devastating.

We’ve provided $1 million each to over 120 councils to get local infrastructure projects off the ground. That helps keep businesses going and locals employed.

I’ve also made it clear to all Government MPs and the Parliament on many occasions that support needs to be continually ramped up as conditions worsen. Even more help is coming and we are going to need it. The National Drought Response Plan has three parts:

We’re supporting those communities that depend on our farmers and are the heart of this country.

Funding local charities, like St Vincent de Paul, the Salvation Army, and the Country Women’s Association to provide local support on the ground, including counselling, with a commitment of around $60 million. 3. BUILDING A MORE DROUGHT RESILIENT AUSTRALIA

1. HELPING THOSE AFFECTED RIGHT NOW First, and most immediately, we’re helping farmers and graziers who are doing it tough, right now. We’ve helped over 12,000 farming families, with around $100,000 each, paid over four years. That’s not a loan, it doesn’t ever have to be paid back. It’s there to help them get through. Some other initiatives include:

We are building a more drought resilient Australia, establishing the $5 billion Future Drought Fund and by putting the infrastructure in place to help us deal with this and future droughts. We have 21 water infrastructure projects committed to, or on the go right now, all across the country. If you’re a farmer or business affected by the drought and in need, for a one-stop shop with all the information about the services and support available, visit www.farmhub.org.au

Helping farmers do work on their farms right now to deal with the drought, like installing new bores, pipes and weirs through our $50 million commitment in rebates for on-farm emergency water infrastructure. Providing generous concessional loans to help farmers prepare for, manage through and recover from drought that can save them up to $60,000 in interest a year. Providing tax relief for farmers, with $75 million in taxation measures, including accelerated fodder storage asset depreciation and the Farm Management Deposit Scheme. Providing Rural Financial Counselling to help with financial planning, mentoring and coaching.

Well done to organisers of Saturday night’s Lithgow Halloween Festival.

The event has grown from strength-to-strength since its inception and has become a major tourism drawcard for Lithgow and across the region.

While taking part in the street march and official opening, I met so many people from Sydney, Bathurst, Orange and even overseas, who dressed up for the event. The Zig Zag Railway at Clarence near Lithgow is set to receive a further $268,000 from the NSW Government to help the iconic Blue Mountains tourist location get back on track.

attraction for over 40 years as a living example of NSW industrial heritage. “The restoration work on sandstone structures including tunnels, viaducts, culverts and retaining walls will help prepare it for a return to operation and ensure the railway remains a site of great cultural significance.” Mr Toole said is hoped that carriages will be back on the tracks next year as part of the commissioning process before the attraction can be reopened to the public again.

Bathurst MP Paul Toole announced the funding, for continuing restoration works, this week after visiting the Zig Zag to meet with key volunteers Ben Lawrence and Cameron McGinty who are helping drive the process to breathe new life back into the attraction. The investment is part of the NSW Government’s $16.5 million Crown Reserves Improvement Fund which aims to upgrade reserves and facilities on Crown lands in regional communities doing it tough. “Crown land covers 42 per cent of the state and is designed to be used by the people of NSW and support organisations that are the lifeblood of our communities,” Mr Toole said. Mr Toole said the latest funding follows previous grant announcements for the Zig Zag Railway from the NSW Government. This includes a $150,000 Heritage Grant in May of this year for the preservation of stonework on the tunnels, viaducts, culverts and retaining walls; and $2.3 million announced by Premier Gladys Berejiklian when she visited Zig Zag in November 2018. “I am sure the local community welcomes the ongoing investment by the NSW Government to reinvigorate the Zig Zag after it was damaged during bushfires in 2013,” Mr Toole said. “The railway has been a highly popular tourist

NO ATAR, NO WORRIES AT TAFE NSW

TAFE NSW Deputy Regional General Manager, Adam Bennett, has moved to ease some of the pressure on HSC students by issuing a timely reminder about the range of TAFE NSW degrees that don’t require an ATAR. As thousands of students across the region are focused on one of the most important periods of their lives, Mr Bennett has highlighted the TAFE NSW Early Entry Program, whereby HSC students can apply for entry to study a TAFE NSW degree, without an ATAR. Mr Bennett said “By allowing students to apply for entry to a degree before receiving an ATAR, the TAFE NSW Early Entry Program gives students and their families some much-needed peace of mind. “Early entry to TAFE NSW degrees allows students to get ahead of the pack and focus on answering exam questions rather than agonising over whether or not they will receive an offer for tertiary studies from other providers.” TAFE NSW degrees offer flexible study options, including online with TAFE Digital, which means students don’t have to travel to study, can work part time and complete a degree at their own pace. Mr Bennett said there were a host of great reasons for high school graduates to consider studying a degree or diploma through TAFE NSW. “The evidence is clear; vocational-based courses typically lead to higher incomes than university graduates are likely to earn. TAFE NSW graduates are likely to be earning more, earlier in their career, than an equivalent university graduate. “University students are switching to TAFE NSW to obtain practical, hands-on qualifications and degrees that

employers recognise. It is important for school leavers to consider TAFE NSW as a viable ‘Plan A’ as opposed to struggling through university.”

BUS STOP RELOCATION – MAIN STREET, LITHGOW

From Thursday 31 October, the bus stop outside the Lithgow Library will be temporarily relocated to carry out essential improvement works to the Lithgow Library. From Thursday 31 October 2019 to Monday 23 December 2019, work will be commencing on the urgent deconstruction of the façade and awning of the Lithgow Library. In line with this project, hoarding will be installed to allow continued public access by footpath. This project will impact the bus stop that exists directly in front of the Library. To ensure bus services are able to continue effectively throughout this period, the bus stop will be relocated to the area immediately in front of Harvey Norman, Lithgow (175 Main Street). Signage will be relocated and Lithgow Buslines have been informed of the temporary change. Additionally, affected businesses have been consulted. While this will reduce parking directly in front of Harvey Norman and Telstra, residents are advised of the available parking to the rear of this building. The patience of the Lithgow community is appreciated and Council advises that changed traffic conditions must be observed by all motorists and pedestrians using the area.

LITHGOW BLAST UNVEILS AWESOME ARTIST LINE UP!

Lithgow City Council is very pleased to announce a live music event ‘Lithgow Blast: A Free Concert for Drought-affected Communities’, to take place at Blast Furnace Park, Lithgow, on Saturday 16th November, with music from 2:00 pm.

Lithgow Blast is an alcohol-free all-ages event for young people and their families and features a smashing line up of stellar artists from across the musical spectrum. Odette, The Delta Riggs, Yours Truly, Citizen Kay, Claude Hay and a slew of local emerging talent will tread the boards between 2:00 pm and 9:00 pm on the day. There’ll be food stalls, room for a picnic and a safe friendly space to let off some steam and dig some brilliant tunes. NSW is experiencing one of the most severe droughts on record, with the Central West region one of the worst affected to date. There have been extremely low inflows (the amount of water entering the river and its storages) the past six months have seen the lowest recorded inflows in history, making life very tough for many people living in the area, particularly families and young people. Says Lithgow City Council representative Matthew Johnson, “This free concert is being held for Lithgow’s young people and is part of Council’s programme of activities for communities affected by the drought. Drought relief is more than actions that directly relate to the land, it includes the celebration of community strength and the provision of festive occasions. Lithgow has never before seen such a line-up of great musicians, so put it in your diary and tell all your friends!” To ease into the day and connect with the local surrounds, Lithgow Walk ‘n’ Talk for Life is leading a walk around Lake Pillans commencing at 1:30 pm.

FIRE PERMITS SUSPENDED IN BATHURST AND LITHGOW RURAL FIRE DISTRICTS

The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) has suspended fire permits from 1 November 2019 until further notice in the Bathurst and Lithgow Local Government Areas due to current and forecast hot, dry and windy conditions. NSW RFS Inspector Mick Holland said the decision to suspend fire permits had been made in order to help keep the local community safe from bush and grass fires. “In hot, dry and windy conditions fires can start quickly and spread rapidly and the potential is there for dangerous fire weather to eventuate in the coming weeks,” Inspector Holland said. “Just one spark from a planned hazard reduction can cause a fire to spread and threaten life and property. “While fire permits have been suspended, we encourage residents to undertake other activities to protect their property from fire, such as clearing leaves from their gutters and removing flammable materials from around their homes.” Serious penalties, including fines and/or imprisonment, apply for starting a fire without a permit during the Bush Fire Danger Period. Permits may be authorised in exceptional circumstances, such as public safety or essential business works. To request an exemption, contact the Chifley/ Lithgow Team Fire Control Centres. For further information on how you can protect your property, or to download a Bush Fire Survival Plan, visit the NSW RFS website at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au or call the Chifley/ Lithgow Team Fire Control Centres on 1300 258 737. Issue 284 - 1 November 2019

Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom, Saturday 2nd November at 9:35pm on Nine

In the category of “movies to watch over and over again”, Temple of Doom - the 2nd in the franchise but set a year before Raiders of the Lost Ark - is a great action flick starring Hollywood icon, Harrison Ford in one his career defining roles as Dr Henry “Indiana” Jones. Jones is in China in trade discussions with Chinese gangsters for an artifact. However things go from bad to worse when his plane crashes over the Himalayas stranding him in the wastelands of India. Jones, along with a lounge singer Wilhelmina “Willie” Scott (played by Spielberg’s real wife Kate Capshaw), and a kid called “Short Round”, get to a village that is suffering a crisis - the children are missing along with their sacred stones. Together the group must defeat the evil vicious voodoo doctor responsible and save the children and recover the sacred stones. * Side note, this one’s not for kids.

Community News SPINSTARS RAISE MONEY FOR BREAST CANCER

The SpinStars are a social group ladies and gentlemen who share a common bond of wool spinning. Formed around seven months ago they decided to give back to the community with a charity auction of some beautiful handmade items and other donations with all the proceeds going towards the Breast Cancer Network of Australia. Auctioneers Kathy Stait and Kerrie Davis entertained the participants and bidding for some items was fierce with over $200 being raised on the day. Morning tea and socialising was the order of the day at the auctions conclusion. The SpinStars welcome new members whether you are an experienced wool spinner or wish to learn the skill. Meetings are held every Wednesday from 10am to 1pm at the Portland Golf Club, 60 Wallerawang Road, Portland. For more info call Jane on 0410 627 166. It stars Haley Lu Richardson, Miranda Otto and Elizabeth McGovern. The film premiered at the Los Angeles film festival this year to high acclaim. Among the most awe inspiring tools in an actors arsenal is the ability to convey the wholeness of one’s inner life in a single glance, the actors in this film are endowed with this gift. Two of them made their first big screen appearance at the age of 19, with McGovern achieving instant stardom as Jeannie the girlfriend of a troubled teenager. The film is an adaptation of the Robert Redford produced 1980 film masterpiece ‘’Ordinary People.’’

POSITIVE CONNECTION

Loneliness is that negative feeling that arises when our social needs are unmet by the quantity and quality of our current social relationships.

We thrive on connections that promote love, intimacy, and a strong emotional and physical interaction with other humans. Positive relationships with one’s parents, siblings, peers, coworkers, and friends are a key ingredient to overall joy. Strong relationships also provide support in difficult times that require resilience. Connections to other people and relationships give us support, meaning and purpose in life. Positive relationships have been found to have enormous influence on our wellbeing. With social media we are more connected, but what is the quality of that connection? It’s the quality of our relationships that count. It’s not to say social networking is bad at all – there is plenty of positive in it – but you need to use it concurrently with face-to-face interaction. If it’s your sole mechanism for connecting with people, it’s going to feel somewhat hollow and not fulfil that basic need we have.

A BUSY BAND

November will start with a busy day for the Band this Saturday with a Meet the Band recital in Cook Plaza commencing at 10.30 then on to the Aged Care Fete in Hoskins Church grounds with a performance at 1pm. To cap the day off some band members will be enjoying afternoon tea at “Peonies at Forty Bends” (700 Forty Bends Road South Bowenfels). In addition to refreshments and peonies to pick, Forty Bends is part of the Artist Trail this weekend. All enquiries welcome.

Ways to decrease loneliness: Make contact with others - When you are feeling most lonely, you doubt yourself, feel anxious socially, or are just unmotivated and want to be on your own. It’s almost counter-intuitive to interact with others, but that’s exactly what you need to do. Volunteering - Allows us to make meaningful connections with people while establishing a sense of purpose. Research has shown the benefits of regular volunteering in reducing feelings of loneliness. Animals - Pets, especially dogs, provide constant companionship and unconditional love – plus their need to be kept active gets you out of the house when you’re feeling down, TIPS FOR THE WEEK: •Get involved with the community – Whether through sport, walking, music, cooking or art, get involved in a program that connects you to others. A great place to start is by seeing what is available around you and connect with like-minded people who share similar interests. •Put yourself out there - No matter how uncomfortable you may feel – chat to the cashier at the supermarket or organise to meet up with a friend you haven’t seen in a while. Start small and have a conversation. While tips like these can be a great start, don’t be afraid to seek help if you are really struggling with the negative feelings of loneliness. Speak to your GP, who may give you a referral to see a mental health professional. LIBRARY’S LATEST ART EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS LOCAL TALENT

During November 2019 an exhibition of paintings by local artists Will and Kellie Hazzard will be on display at the Lithgow Library Learning Centre.

Will Hazzard is 18 years old and autistic. He had a love of art from a young age, but art became a form of therapy with his autism diagnosis at age 10. Influenced by nature, Will’s work aims for a connection with animals, the environment, and the Wiradjuri land he lives on. His work is often inspired by personal encounters with nature and his paintings represent life cycles and a spiritual connection with the earth. Featuring built up layers of paint, the work is meant to be tactile as Will wants his art to ‘touch’ people. Kelly Hazzard is a self-taught artist and her works are representations of nature, often animals that she comes across on her rural property between Lithgow and Bathurst. Her art tends to be realistic as she tries to capture the inner spirit of her subjects. The Lithgow Library is an ideal space to showcase local artistic talents. The free exhibition will run from 1st until 30th November 2019 in the Lithgow Library Learning Centre. For more information about exhibitions at the library or to enquire about holding an exhibition contact the Lithgow Library on 6352 9100.

SINGER-SONGWRITER ARCHIE ROACH TO SPEAK ABOUT NEW MEMOIR IN BATHURST

Australian singer-songwriter Archie Roach will be coming to Bathurst in November to speak about his new autobiography, Tell Me Why: The Story of My Life and My Music. Organisers of the Bathurst Writers’ and Readers’ Festival, in association with BooksPlus and Local Stages, are delighted to have Archie Roach appearing at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre for one of a small number of regional events on his Australia-wide tour. Tell Me Why is a powerful memoir of a true Australian legend: stolen child, musical and lyrical genius, and leader. Archie Roach’s story is an extraordinary odyssey through love and heartbreak, family and community, survival and renewal – and the healing power of music. Roach was only two years old when he was forcibly removed from his family. Brought up by a series of foster parents until his early teens, his world imploded when he received a letter that spoke of a life he had no memory of. Overcoming enormous odds to find his story and his people, Archie voices the joy, pain and hope he found on his path through song to become the legendary singersongwriter and storyteller that he is today – beloved by fans worldwide. Tell Me Why is a stunning account of resilience and the strength of spirit – and of a great love story. Archie Roach will be in-conversation with Wiradyuri artist, Robert ‘Birrunga’ Henderson, about his new book at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre on Wednesday 13th November at 6.30pm. Birrunga is the founder and principal artist of the multi-award winning Birrunga Gallery in Brisbane’s CBD, who painted a stunningly powerful portrait of Roach for the Archibald Prize a few years ago.

Tickets for the event are $20 Adults and $10 Concession. Tickets can be purchased from BMEC at www.bmec.com. au or by phoning 6333 6161.

ARCHIE ROACH

“I’ve seen a lot of regional artists display their works at our gallery over the past four years. I can honestly say that Merelyn is a most awe-inspiring realist artist and we are thrilled that she is exhibiting with us this November/December,” said Cathy Dorin from May Raechelle Art Gallery, Millthorpe

Wednesday 13th November 6.30PM Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre

No one has lived as many lives as Archie Roach – stolen child, seeker, teenage alcoholic, lover, father, musical and lyrical genius, and leader – but it took him almost a lifetime to find out who he really was. Archie’s story is an extraordinary odyssey through love and heartbreak, family and community, survival and renewal – and the healing power of music. Tell Me Why is a stunning account of resilience and the strength of spirit – and of a great love story. Wiradyuri man Robert 'Birrunga' Henderson is a practicing visual artist and founder of the Birrunga Gallery in Brisbane's CBD. Birrunga painted a powerful portrait of Archie for the 2014 Archibald Prize.

18TH ANNUAL WALLNUTS WEEKEND

Over 30 sign writers converge on Portland from throughout the state.

The doors of the old Portland Co-Op building were open with the Sign Writing Museum having over 50 examples of hand painted advertising signs and other advertising paraphernalia. Sign writers were on hand to explain their craft to visitors. WallNuts member Marshall Dunn has been making the trip from Braidwood to Portland since 2011 and looks forward to the WallNuts weekend every year.

MERELYN MASTERS – A MASTER OF REALISM EXHIBITING AT MAY RAECHELLE ART GALLERY, MILLTHORPE

While the wind and rain of Saturday morning prevented the completion of the advertising signs on the exterior wall of the Co-Op, painting of the new sign on the front wall of the 1st Portland Scouts added colour to Cullen Street. The WallNuts were able to make a start on the very impressive life-sized portraits of servicemen and women which will be installed adjacent to the ‘Lest We Forget’ mural in the quadrangle of Portland Central School in coming months.

Merelyn, from Orange NSW, works in watercolour pencil and when I first saw her works, I mistook them for photographs. It wasn’t until she began talking about her media that I realised I was looking at drawings! Merelyn tries her hand at many types of art and was encouraged by an artistic family, “At an early age I taught myself to draw, sew and knit, later adding crocheting to that list. I grew up in a family of creative people.” In her drawings she specialises in animals. A life of growing up surrounded by nature has also given her artistic encouragement, “My rural background and a life-long love of animals, nature and creativity is my inspiration.” Like many artists, Merelyn finds an escape through her art and it helps her to relax and “come down” after a busy day, “For me creating art is many things, challenging, rewarding and very therapeutic, temporarily relieving the burdens of reality.” And the end of an art project, with the culmination of time and effort is incredibly fulfilling, “When I see my finished piece come to life in front of me it is a magical moment.” The artworks of Merelyn Masters will be on display in our Rural Art Exhibition at May Raechelle Art Gallery in Millthorpe from Saturday 2 November to Sunday 29 December. Merelyn will be at the gallery from 10am on Saturday 2 November, so come along and meet this highly talented local artist.

WallNuts member Marshall Dunn has been coming to Portland since 2011.

PANORAMA PUNISH

With record numbers of over 800 finishers under the 60 minute cutoff from just under 1000 registrations, the 2019 edition of the Mount Panorama Punish foot race around the iconic motor racing track was a huge success in perfect conditions.

Dave Criniti and Stephanie Torley were first over the top of the mountain and first home, both in race record times. Nearly 70% of the field were visitors to Bathurst, all wanting the opportunity to conquer the legendary track. “We could not have been more pleased with the spirit of the runners and the atmosphere they generated. The camaraderie and great banter on course was brilliant” said Jenn Arnold, co-event organiser with her partner Stephen Jackson. The third edition of the race was preceded the evening before by the RunNation Film Festival, and Bathurst parkrun hosted more than 300 participants on Saturday morning, nearly a third visiting Bathurst for the Punish. Bathurst Regional Council has been quick to confirm the date for 2020 as the 25th October, setting the Mount Panorama Punish as a major event each year attracting many visitors to the region, and diversifying the type of use of the motor (and now foot) racing circuit. “A huge vote of thanks to our many volunteers and sponsors, without them it just wouldn’t happen” said Jackson “the success of the event will allow us to make donations to local community groups in the new year, in the lead-up to the 2020 event”. Sponsors: Raine & Horne, D2F, Bathurst Physiotherapy, Reliance Bank, Bathurst Regional Council, Aldi, Ba-thirst Runners, and Central Commercial Printers. (Images supplied.)

WILDFIRES SENIOR CRICKET The wildfire Cricket team travelled to the Entrance on Sunday 27/10/19 to play against the Central Coast.

It was a good day with The Wildfires coming away with a win. Wildfires batted first and made 6/183. Three batsmen in Stephen Walsh, Neville Castle and John Emms all retired on 30 and Paul Curran made a handy 28 not out at the end of the innings. Central Coast made a score of 6/142. Best bowling figures were Paul Curran with 2/11 and Dave Hicks 1/11 all the of the other bowlers, bowled fairly economically and the fielding by the wildfires was excellent and saved a lot of runs. The team was also happy to welcome back John Emms after an absence of 4yrs. Paul Curran was given and well deserved Man of the Match It was a good day and the wildfires was happy to come away with a win
