BACK TO SCHOOL REMINDER FOR MOTORISTS

The commencement of the fourth school term provides an opportunity to remind drivers to slow down and take care around school zones. With Term 4 of the school year underway, designated school zones are back in operation. Lithgow City Council Mayor, Ray Thompson said today “Parking restrictions apply in school zones to help keep children safe. They protect sight distances, provide safe pick up and drop off opportunities and minimize confusion where children are crossing roads”. “I call upon all road users to be especially vigilant when picking up, dropping off or passing by school zones. There is nothing more important than keeping our children safe and sound”, concluded Mayor Thompson. Council Rangers and local Police patrol school zones to enforce parking restrictions and illegal road user behaviour. Fines and loss of demerit points can apply. For further information on school zone safety please visit www.rms.nsw.gov.au or phone the RMS on 13 22 13.

FAST FREIGHT FROM SYDNEY THE KEY TO GROW FOOD ECONOMY

The NSW Business Chamber has called for bipartisan support to implement recommendations to reduce freight travel times between Central Western NSW and Western Sydney to turbocharge the state’s fresh food economy. The recommendations were included in the report by the NSW Legislative Council’s inquiry into fresh food, released today. “The Chamber welcomes the recommendations of the inquiry, especially that fresh food is delivered from our local farmers, over the Great Dividing Range, to Western Sydney in a sub-three hour journey,” said Regional Manager, Western NSW Business Chamber, Vicki Seccombe. “It is important rail and road corridors are improved as it can facilitate the establishment of the food economy and can transform a major food producing region like the Central West into a regional economic

powerhouse, reinvigorating regional food processing and manufacturing,” Ms Seccombe said. “The recommendation the Government convene a taskforce to expedite the development of a plan to improve freight connections should be a matter of priority,” Ms Seccombe said. “With the Western Sydney Airport opening in 2026, it is vital better freight connections are put in place now to also allow for our local fresh produce to be flown to international markets. “Getting food from paddock to plate to the booming Asia-Pacific middle class is an opportunity that we simply cannot afford to miss out on,” she said. “According to a discussion paper by the NSW Farmers’ Association, improving linkages between the Central West and Western Sydney will revitalise traditional agricultural supply chains and significantly improve our international competitiveness. “A sub-three hour journey could also open up a lucrative east-west visitor economy starting at the new airport through to the Blue Mountains and the Central West. The Chamber calls on the NSW Government and Opposition to support the recommendations.

COUNCIL AND POLICE CALL FOR INCREASED PUBLIC SAFETY AWARENESS ON NEWNES PLATEAU With Spring weather arriving, and Summer just around the corner, Lithgow City Council and Lithgow Police are advising the public to exercise caution and obey the law in Newnes Forest. “The Newnes State Forest is a popular recreation destination for Lithgow locals and visitors from Sydney and elsewhere,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Ray Thompson. “With increasing numbers of people using the forest for a range of activities, it is really important that people behave in safe ways that respect fellow visitors.” “Police are finding an increasing number of unregistered vehicles and unlicensed drivers using Newnes Plateau,” said Chief Inspector Chris Sammut. “This is not only dangerous for the drivers and passengers in those vehicles and other law abiding visitors, but illegal too.” “My officers will be making regular patrols of the Newnes Forrest in the warmer months to ensure public safety and significant penalties will be applied for road safety infringements.

NEWS PLAQUES AND SIGNAGE FOR MARJORIE JACKSON STATUE “Council has heard the observations by the community regarding the reinstallation of the plaques and signage on to the Marjorie Jackson statue in Cook Street Plaza”, Councillor Ray Thompson, Mayor of Lithgow said. “Council understands the importance of this icon to the local community and how important it is for Lithgow’s pride and heritage to be clearly illustrated through such signage.” “For this reason, Council has arranged for the previous signage to be installed to the base of Marjorie in combination with a new, custom-made sign and pedestal. This installation has occurred in order to ensure that the significance of the statue remains forefront both in terms of the statue’s prominence as well as the availability of relevant, accompanying information.” “Once the designs have been completed, in the coming weeks 11 removable planters and 2 custom bin surrounds will be ordered for installation within Cook Street Plaza. This process has been expedited to ensure delivery, installation and planting during the spring growing season.” “Both Lithgow City Council and myself appreciate the patience of the community during the completion of this project. We hope that through ongoing activation of this space, Cook Street Plaza can continue to facilitate trade and community growth, pride and spirit into the future,” stated Mayor Thompson.

This means that a small business, such as an independent supermarket or a pub that makes $500,000 profit, will have an additional $7,500 in 2020-21 and $12,500 in 2021-22 to invest back into the business or staff, or help to manage cash flow.

LITHGOW WORKIES MAYFIELD GARDEN SPRING FESTIVAL ON NOW CLUB MOTEL AMONGST THE BEST HOTELS IN AUSTRALIA HotelsCombined, the Australian-based hotel meta-search company, performed an extensive survey covering different types of accommodation within Australia. This survey was based on gathering data from millions of guest reviews, and translating them to an official Recognition of Excellence.

The HotelsCombined Recognition of Excellence is not a ranking list but a group of outstanding accommodations chosen based on a strict set of criteria. In order to be considered, properties must meet the following criteria: At the time of judging, a winner is rated 8.50/10 or over with a minimum of 50 customer reviews certified by HotelsCombined. We couldn’t detect any major customer service problems, nor recurring or unresolved issues. Moreover, HotelsCombined is taking great consideration the way the hotel staff answered the Hotels communication team, demonstrating their commitment in providing quick assistance. Lithgow Workies Club Motel boasts a high satisfaction rating among guests and travel industry experts, receiving 178 reviews for an impressive rating of 9.1 out of 10. The Motel Manager at the Lithgow Workies Club Motel, Julie Rushworth said: “We pride ourselves on ensuring our Motel is the premium product in the Lithgow Area. We have a great accommodation product that is reasonably priced with the convenience of a Registered Club all under one roof. We work very hard at providing quality product and service and it is so rewarding to hear that we have one another award for our Motel.” “We are thrilled to be working with the best hotels in Australia and the Lithgow Workies Club Motel is certainly among them” said Alberto Castellucchio, market manager of HotelsCombined Australia “What is different about the Recognition of Excellence is the way information is gathered and analysed: it all depends on the guest and his or her experience with that particular accommodation. “ “With HotelsCombined, 30 million people are finding the best deal available on-line every month. With this award, we’d like to make it even easier for every traveler to identify the best hotel for customer service and therefore the best value for their money”.

Dr Derek N. Allan BDS Hons (Syd), DCD Orth (Melb), MOrth RCS (Edin), Specialist Orthodontist

Beautiful smiles. Excellent treatment. Specialist care.

“Within the urban Lithgow area, a great deal of effort has been made clearing stormwater infrastructure after the recent rain. Additionally, sewer renewal works have been completed as Eskbank House and work has continued on the installation of a water filling station at Barton Street, Lithgow.” “Importantly, this weekend sees a number of events commencing including the Resilience Festival, Lake Wallace fishing competition and the upcoming cricket

season. In preparation, Council staff have seen to outstanding maintenance and upkeep requirements of local sporting fields, Lake Wallace and Tony Luchetti Showground in order to ensure they’re in the best possible condition prior to the events.” “Additionally, Council’s rural works staff have been hard at work improving stormwater infrastructure to cater for the recent, welcomed rain by replacing collapsed pipes on Ganbenang Road, Lowther as well as Mill Creek Road, Kanimbla while also attending to asphalt patching requirements within Cullen Bullen and along Pipers Flat Road.” “As always, wet weather continues to restrict the ability to perform some works, however staff diligently continue to work towards ensuring Lithgow’s assets continue to serve the needs of the community”, said Mayor Thompson.

A group of local residents are actively helping to improve health services in Lithgow and the surrounding areas. The Lithgow Health Consumers Working Group met last week to identify the health priorities for the local area. Lithgow Councillor Cass Coleman participated in the working group, which includes community representatives and local carers. "It is great to see 30 plus people regularly meeting to discuss the health needs of our local community," said Councillor Coleman. "The information-sharing is impressive, as the meeting outcomes are directly shared with the Primary Health Network and the Local Health District."

Three health priorities have been identified for the community of Lithgow: 1. Access to services and the transport cost associated with travelling outside the local area 2. Mental health services 3. Rehabilitation services Councillor Coleman said, “The working group also explored how consumers of health services can contribute to the delivery of services and focus on the entire patient journey - but the stand-out for me is that digital health services are actually contributing to improving health access and services for Lithgow residents." The Lithgow Health Consumers Working Group is seeking more volunteers from the local community so if you have a passion to improve health care in the local community, please contact Judith Davies on 0407 002 673 or Mshoard11@bigpond.com.

Lithgow City Council Mayor, Ray Thompson said today “Parking restrictions apply in school zones to help keep children safe. They protect sight distances, provide safe pick up and drop off opportunities and minimize confusion where children are crossing roads”.

8

“I call upon all road users to be especially vigilant when picking up, dropping off or passing by school zones. There is nothing more important than keeping our children safe and sound”, concluded Mayor Thompson. Council Rangers and local Police patrol school zones to enforce parking restrictions and illegal road user behaviour. Fines and loss of demerit points can apply. For further information on school zone safety please visit www.rms.nsw.gov.au or phone the RMS on 13 22 13.

JOHN BARNES EXHIBITION John Barnes, an iconic local artist, will be exhibiting at Lithgow Library for the month of November – his books and art are well known for their local imagery and historic significance.

INTERNATIONAL SPEECH CONTEST AT LITHGOW GATEWAY TOASTMASTERS PHOTO: Left to Right Club President Monique Tonna congratulating winners Sheila Riordan and Kristy Head, along with Kathy Lehmann and Eileen Hunter.

Lithgow Gateway Toastmasters Club hosted an international speech contest on Wednesday 17 October 2018, with officials travelling from Sydney and Bathurst.

Contestants from the Lithgow Gateway Toastmasters Club included local residents Eileen Hunter and Kathy Lehmann, along with Blue Mountains club members Sheila Riordan and Kristy Head. Club President Monique Tonna congratulated the winning Toastmasters at the Lithgow event. “First place for the International Humorous Speech Contest goes to Lawson lady Sheila Riordan who told us about her hilarious birthday escapade at Penrith Whitewater Rafting,” said Monique Tonna. The other International event was the Table Topics

Contest where members put their speaking skills to the test on a random topic and tell a story for 1 – 2 minutes. “Our Vice President of Education, Kathy Lehmann, took second place, with our Table Topics winner Kristy Head from Leura to compete in the Area Contest with Sheila Riordan in February next year in Dubbo,” said Monique Tonna. Toastmasters is an international club where people build their confidence speaking in front of a group and improve their presentation skills. Club Sergeant-of-Arms Mike Williams said, “It is always tough choosing first place so thank you to the people who have travelled from Sydney and further a field to help with judging, especially long-time Lithgow Toastmasters legend Merv Tobin from Bathurst.” Lithgow Toastmasters meets every first and third Wednesday of each month at Club Lithgow from 7PM. For more information, please call Kristy Head on 1800 450 50

Lithgow historian and artist John Barnes, renowned for his drawings of buildings in the Lithgow area, is set to create an exhibition that tells the stories of Lithgow. On show from Thursday November 1 until Friday 30 November 2018, this exhibition will have audiences engaged in the tales that have fascinated locals for more than a century. With each drawing, John Barnes collects the stories of the people surrounding each place. From the Barton Park Murders to Sir Joseph Cook in the Vale of Clwydd Mine, John’s images divulge some of Lithgow’s most gruesome and uplifting stories. “The diversity of the artworks that have been on display this year at the Lithgow Library has been outstanding”, said Mayor Ray Thompson. “John’s work is of local and historical significance, this is a great opportunity to have a look at some of his work”. The free exhibition will be on display from 1-30 November 2018 at Lithgow Library during library opening hours. For more information on this exhibition or upcoming exhibitions contact the library on 6352 9100.

INNOVATIVE SUPPORT FOR CARERS IN RURAL COMMUNITIES

GREAT RESULT FOR GONE FISHING DAY A wet/ windy miserable forecast was the prediction for the day, however we struck some luck and the day turned out relatively perfect with a mild easterly breeze along with only a couple of very minor spots of drizzle. With heavy rain falling around most of the surrounding area and end of school holidays, numbers were a little lower than last year, but still enough to equal the amount of people we had in our first ever attempt to run this community event back in 2016, with an estimated over 500 people attending throughout the day and 273 registered participants. In the end there were many trout caught and released with the “new perpetual largest fish trophy” being awarded to Ben Spittles of Lithgow for a massive 63cm Rainbow! 1st place largest trout Junior was a tie for first place at 55cm rainbows by Oscar Gordon (15yrs) and Byron Lamborn (12yrs) both from Wallerawang Only a handful of Redfin were caught on the day, these numbers would be attributed with the cooler weather as Redfin feed more in the warmer temperatures where Trout are accustomed to the cooler climates. Alison Jackson of Lithgow won the 1st place raffle major prize which was the Dometic 45lt portable fridge freezer. It was a fantastic day for all and with the help from our sponsors we hope to be able to run the event again next year.

To mark National Carers’ Week 2018 (14-20 October), La Trobe University is calling for participants to take part in an innovative, national project funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, which aims to increase carer support in rural communities. All community members including carers, volunteers and staff, are invited to participate in this major online initiative – the first of its kind in Australia. La Trobe’s Virtual Dementia Friendly Rural Communities (Verily Connect) project - which includes video conferencing, a specially designed website and smartphone app, and help provided by local volunteers in using technology - aims to connect and increase support for carers of people living with memory loss and dementia across 12 rural locations in Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales. Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care, Ken Wyatt AM, said Verily Connect promised vital linkages for regional carers and was made possible by almost $1.7 million in Federal funding. “With over 425,000 Australians living with dementia, the work of carers is critical, especially in regional areas,” Minister Wyatt said. “Verily Connect is set to reduce the challenges of distance and isolation, linking carers and helping them continue delivering support to some of our most vulnerable citizens.” Director of La Trobe’s John Richards’ Centre for Rural Ageing Research and Principal Investigator for Verily Connect, Professor Irene Blackberry, said there is a very real need for carers to be supported and connected, especially when living in often very isolated communities. “Dementia Australia estimates there are 291,163 Australians involved in providing unpaid, informal care for people living with dementia,” Professor Blackberry said. “Caring is a vital role that can be both joyful and demanding. We know that when carers are well supported, they are more able to manage any stresses arising from their caring role.” Professor Blackberry said the Verily Connect Project incorporates technology to create an online network of carers, based on dementia-friendly community principles. “People who live in rural communities have less access to support services,” Professor Blackberry said. “By creating a virtual dementia friendly rural community, we can eliminate geographical isolation and potentially reduce the need for expensive and disruptive residential care or multiple acute care admissions for people living with dementia.” Tina, a carer in Koo Wee Rup, Victoria, who is participating in the trial, said Verily Connect is linking her with others in similar situations. “Verily Connect is helpful because it’s really good to speak about what’s happening with someone else who understands – and who may have ideas I haven’t thought of,” she said. Three key innovations are being trialled: Online peer-support groups for carers who meet by video-conference Access to support and information for carers via a purpose-built website and smartphone app Face-to-face help for carers in using online technology, provided by local volunteers who have received Verily Connect training. Verily Connect is being implemented with staggered starting times across the next six months. Some communities are already trialling Verily Connect technologies while others are waiting.

Issue 233 - 19 October 2018 Invictus Games Opening Ceremony

Saturday 20th October on ABC at 7:30pm

We are flush with “Royal” fever right now in our region with the visit of Prince Harry and his new bride Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex. And while we have been excited for their recent visits to our neighbours in Bathurst and Dubbo, the other reason for their visit is so Prince Harry can participate at the Invictus Games in Sydney from 20th October until 27th October. Prince Harry created the games after a British team competed at the US Warrior Games in 2013, a multi-sport event for wounded, injured or ill service people and veterans. The Prince wished to bring the concept of a similar international sporting event to the UK and was put together as a charity event to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and demonstrate life beyond disability. First held in March 2014 in London, then May 2016 in Orlando USA and most recently September 2017 in Toronto Canada, Sydney has the honour of hosting the fourth games. Be sure to tune in over the next week to catch all the action.

100TH ANNIVERSARY FREE TELSTRA TECH OF THE ARMISTICE SAVVY SENIORS CLASSES AT THE LIBRARY Lithgow, Portland and Wallerawang Libraries will be once again holding basic technology classes for seniors starting from the 17 October 2018, on Wednesday and Thursday mornings between 10.00am and 12.00pm.

Pictured: New Zealand born Pte Joseph King, 13th Battalion Australian AIF

The 11 November 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice – the day the guns fell silent and the end of the Great War 19141919. In memory of the men and women of the Lithgow and district who served their country during this time, the Lithgow & District Family History Society will be holding a service at 2pm at the Anzac memorial Garden, located in the grounds of the Lithgow General Cemetery. The garden was planted out in 2014. The original memorial plaque was destroyed by vandals in the ensuing months. Lithgow City Council has recently installed a new bronze plaque on the memorial rock. This will be unveiled by the Honourable Paul Toole MP during the service. The traditional service will include the narration of the story of local soldier Private George Mara by his 3-x great nephew Brody McLean. A tribute will be paid to New Zealand born Gallipoli Veteran, Joseph King who served with the AIF and who is buried in Lithgow General Cemetery. The New Zealand national anthem will be sung in Maori and English by his fellow New Zealanders. Ben Fairbairn and Pat Connell will provide musical items during the service. There will be an opportunity for members of the public to lay a wreath or a poppy after the official wreath laying ceremony. Knitted poppies will be available for a gold coin donation. The Lithgow & District Family History Society is grateful to Lithgow City Council for the provision of seating and a canopy on the occasion. Further enquiries and information may be obtained by contacting the Society by email lithgow.secretary@gmail. com or by phoning 0448 048 137

“Previous sessions of Tech Savvy Seniors were very popular and highlighted that internet use and computer literacy are important skills that are essential in our society. The classes will provide a gateway for seniors who feel overwhelmed by technology”, said Mayor Ray Thompson. To provide our senior members of the community with some insight into the requirements of our changing world, the Lithgow Library Learning Centre is hosting Telstra Tech Savvy Seniors classes on Wednesday and Thursday mornings starting from 17 October 2018. The classes will be held over 6 weeks and are spread across the libraries in Lithgow, Portland and Wallerawang. Classes range from introduction to the Internet and social media, to smartphones and online shopping and banking. To assist participants to become comfortable using the skills taught in the class, we request that you bring your own device. Bookings are essential. For more information about the sessions available and to make a booking please contact the Lithgow Library on 6352 9100. You can also find the program on the library website or Facebook page.

REDEDICATION OF PADLEY’S MEMORIAL AT HASSANS WALLS LOOKOUT

The community is invited to the rededication of the recently restored memorial to distinguished Lithgow resident James Padley at Hassans Walls Lookout on Saturday 20 October at 10:00am to commemorate the centenary of his death on 20 October 1918. James Padley settled in Lithgow in 1902 having come from Yorkshire England, through the Victorian gold rush at Castlemaine, followed by the heady days of Melbourne’s boom years, then “home” to England and back again to Australia. He was the driving force in the Lithgow Progress Association and the chief instigator of the development of Hassans Walls. To coincide with the centenary of James Padley’s death and the launch of a book about him titled Padley of the Pedestal by author Keith painter, Lithgow City Council has restored the pedestal next to the Sir Joseph Cook boardwalk at Hassans Walls Lookout. An author talk by Keith Painter on his book Padley of the Pedestal will take place on Friday 19 October at 3:00pm at Lithgow Library. For more information on this talk, and to make a booking please contact the Lithgow Library on 6352 9100.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF DOG OWNERS Owning a dog is both a great pleasure and great responsibility. Lithgow Council is keen to educate pet owners on their responsibilities particularly when they visit public places. When walking their dogs in public, dog owners need to ensure their pets are properly restrained and all dog litter is picked up and properly disposed of. Owners should also check any signage before taking their dogs on to playing fields as dogs may be prohibited. If dogs are permitted they still must be restrained and owners must clean up after them. Dogs are required to be restrained in all public places with the exception of dedicated off-leash areas at: • Endeavour Park, Lithgow • Montague Street , Lithgow • Lake Wallace, Wallerawang • Williwa Street, Portland
