Your Say Submitted by Community Members Dear Sir What are the chances that, after the next Council election, we’ll have a LNP dominant Council? What are the chances that, after the next state election, we’ll have a Labor State Govt & a local Labor State representative? And then what would the chances be that any member of the LNP group in Council would run into the State Labor Premier at the Bathurst races? - Macgregor Ross

Legislation confirms Springvale is secure CLEAN UP THIS SPRING 11th hour State Government intervention has ensured the livelihoods of workers at Springvale mine this week after legislation was passed in Parliament to rectify the planning act which had given the approval for the project extension in the first place. An editorial opinion by Rich Evans Local member Paul Toole MP had been working on a solution for some time and was glad to see the legislation passed. “The passage of this legislation is the culmination of weeks working towards the goal of securing jobs and power supply,” Mr Toole said. “This will be a huge relief to the community of Lithgow. About 600 local jobs now have been protected and our power supply is secure,” Mr Toole said. “The NSW Government was proud to support Lithgow workers and the wider community by passing this legislation.” The legislation to ensure the future of the Springvale Mine – the sole current source of fuel for Mount Piper Power Station – passed Parliament Wednesday night. The legislation follows meetings over the past few weeks with many representatives making their voices heard. Mayor Stephen Lesslie extended thanks to all who supported this issue, including Paul Toole, the member for Bathurst, Luke Foley the Leader of the Opposition who attended Lithgow personally to support Centennial Coal and the Lithgow community, Philip Donato Member for Orange and representative of the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party who has been working with Lithgow Council and management behind the scenes supporting regional issues of interest common to both Orange and Lithgow LGA’s and the Lithgow District Chamber of Commerce which actively lobbied in support of Springvale. “There are so many positives resulting from the NSW Governments decision, not the least of which is the certainty of employment for Centennial Coal and its employees” said Clr Lesslie. “The concerns of the Lithgow Community have

been listened to not only by the Government , but by representatives of the NSW Opposition and the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party and hopefully this will continue in the future as strong communication and relationships are forged between all concerned” said Clr Lesslie The Lithgow District Chamber of Commerce were also pleased with the outcome, following their meeting in the lead up with Paul Toole and the Deputy Premier John Barilaro. 'I am so pleased to hear the announcement made by the NSW Government providing us with positive assurance of jobs in the area. It's critical we have the highest level of government aware of the economic situation and business community in our region; something the Chamber of Commerce is passionate about achieving.' President of the Lithgow District Chamber of Commerce, Angela O'Connor stated. Vice President of the Chamber, Graham Hodson, also recognised the past lobbying by the chamber at PAC meetings in support of Springvale Colliery, culminating in the meeting with the Ministers last month. 'There has been a huge support for Springvale Colliery from Council, all facets of government, and industries with the common goal in mind; to ensure local jobs are safe'. Whilst there has been a great deal of jockeying from either side of the political fence on this matter, the focus needs to be put back on the fact that there is a positive outcome for the community and lessons can be learned on how best to approach the situation when it arises in the future. There is no doubt that there will be other challenges in the coming decade as the mines approval is valid until 2028. One of the major concerns will be the same major economic challenge facing countless industries and jobs across the planet. Change. Automation will impact the resources and energy industries just like any other. More profitable work done by fewer people and managed by machines. This is not a nightmare from some science fiction movie like Terminator, this is a very real challenge to the very idea of how people work. Now is the time to begin the discussion of what else we can do in this region to build industry and investment to ensure that at some stage in the future we can transition away from being so heavily dependent on such a small cross section of industry. Well, in reality, 10 years ago was the best time to start the discussion, however, just like the saying goes: when is the best time to plant a tree - ten years ago; when is the next best time - NOW!

Mine workers gathered near Springvale Mine to hear an address from State Opposition Leader Luke Foley.

Survey for Lithgow Businesses Lithgow City Council and NSW Dept. of Premier and Cabinet (DPC) partner to survey Lithgow Businesses as part of the development of the Lithgow Regional Economic Development Strategy.

“The survey follows recent discussions between DPC and Lithgow Council resulting in Lithgow being approved as a stand alone “Functional Economic Region” (FER) when such regions are normally an amalgamation of neighbouring Local Government areas” said Lithgow

Council General Manager Graeme Faulkner. “Lithgow has unique funding potential for its regional economic strategy because it is now stand alone, and we are asking all businesses and any other interested parties in the Lithgow LGA to participate in the survey via the link provided by Council in media releases, emails and written correspondence” said Mr Faulkner. Representatives from the DPC will be discussing the Lithgow Regional Economic Strategy with Council next week. “We are hopeful that businesses and other interested parties will respond to the survey as quickly as possible to assist the DPC and Council with the disciplined time frame set for analysis of the Lithgow area” said the General Manager

Mayor’s Christmas Appeal - Target 166 Yes that’s right; this year’s target is 166 gifts. That’s the number of residents in our local nursing homes and that’s the number of gifts we will need to make each and every one of those resident’s Christmas a little brighter. “Each year Council coordinates this wonderful appeal which brings so much joy to the residents of our local nursing homes” Said Mayor Lesslie. “The gifts are hand delivered by myself and Council staff to all of the residents. I enjoy meeting everyone, having a chat and seeing the smiles on their faces as they open their gift which has been generously donated by a member of the community”. Mayor, Stephen Lesslie is calling on the community to once again provide small donations of gifts for the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. Gift numbers can fluctuate, however, at present the target is 117 gifts for ladies and 49 gentlemen’s gifts. Hand crafted gifts, gifts that provide visual and sensory stimulus suitable for Alzheimer’s patients, socks, non-allergenic personal care products, books, videos or soft lollies and chocolates are welcomed by the residents. In the past, some residents have used this as an opportunity to clean out their cupboards of unused items and or re-gift unwanted gifts. Please DO NOT do this as these items are generally unsuitable. Donations can be dropped off at Council’s Administration Building or any one of Council’s libraries by Friday 24 November (please do not wrap). They will be bundled and wrapped for distribution to residents at Tanderra, Cooinda, Tabulam Cottages and Three Tree Lodge in early December”. For further information on the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, phone Council’s Administration Office on 6354 9999 or go to Council’s website council.lithgow.com/christmasappeal.

SPRINGVALE SAVED! JOBS SAVED! GREAT NEWS FOR LITHGOW!

FORTY BENDS UPGRADE ON THE GREAT WESTERN HIGHWAY COMPLETE

Legislation to keep the Springvale Mine operational has now passed through the New South Wales Parliament. This is terrific news for the 600 miners and power workers who work at the mine and Mt Piper. It’s been a very unsettling period for them and their families and this legislation should deliver some much needed certainty and confidence about the future. The NSW Government certainly made the right call at the right time on this issue. Closing the mine is just not an option and I’m very pleased that the NSW Government has taken this action. Centennial Coal has a solution to the environmental concerns regarding water so there is absolutely no reason to shut it down. Common-sense has prevailed and I congratulate the NSW Government and Local Member Paul Toole on drawing this issue to a successful conclusion.

EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS TRAINING – PaTH On Monday I attended the launch of the Employability Skills Training Youth Jobs PaTH (Prepare – Trial – Hire) at TAFE Western - Lithgow College. PaTH is part of the Federal Government’s $188.3 million investment in new Employability Skills Training to prepare more young Australians entering the workforce. In addition to the training, PaTH also consists of Trial - a voluntary internship of four to 12 weeks to help young people gain the skills and work experience they need to get and keep a job; and Hire - a Youth Bonus wage subsidy of up to $10,000 (GST inclusive) for employers. Lithgow TAFE has always been highly dynamic and leads the way in vocational training for our country workforce. If you're a job seeker aged 15 - 24 you may want to consider discussing Employability Skills Training (EST) with your jobactive provider. More information about Youth Jobs PaTH is available at https://jobactive.gov.au/path

Andrew pictured with the NSW RMS project team. Work is now complete on the Forty Bends section of the Great Western Highway, ensuring a smoother and safer journey for motorists. Work was carried out as part of the Australian and New South Wales Government’s $250 million Great Western Highway upgrade between Katoomba and Lithgow. The $64.7 million upgrade along the Forty Bends section of the highway included widening the existing road to three lanes and more than 1,300 local jobs were created as a result of the project. Deadly black ice has been a big issue on this stretch of road. The roadway has been moved to allow more sunlight to reach sunlight to reach it for longer periods and an archway has been built underneath to allow greater air circulation and faster heating of the surface. The Great Western Highway is a crucial link between Sydney and the Central West and I’m pleased to see that this section of the road is open to traffic!

CATCHING UP WITH BISHOP MICHAEL MCKENNA I recently caught up with Bishop Michael McKenna in Bathurst. The Catholic Diocese of Bathurst almost covers the same area as the Calare electorate, with 17 Parishes spread across the Central West.

U.S. STYLE GUN LAWS DON’T MAKE OUR COMMUNITIES SAFER

Andrew pictured with Cr Maree Statham, Andrew Johnson, Andrew Crowley, Frank Thorvaldsson and students of the Tafe Western Lithgow Campus.

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE EXPLORERS I recently visited Glen Ryan’s property on the edge of Lithgow. Glen is a legendary wood chopper and was inducted into the Australian Axemen’s Hall of Fame last year. The historical significance of Glen’s property is impressive. In 2013, two plaques were placed on top of Mt Blaxland to mark the bicentenary of the crossing of the Blue Mountains by explorers Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson and Charles Wentworth in 1813 – the first successful crossing in New South Wales by European Settlers. Mt Blaxland was the furthest point the explorers reached. Andrew pictured with Glen Ryan at the top of Mt Blaxland.

The National Firearms Amnesty has just ended and more than 50,000 guns were handed in. That’s a big number and a lot of guns off our streets. I fully support the rights of farmers, recreational and sporting shooters to use guns under the system we currently have in place. I have no issue with that and they should not be demonised for their use of firearms. We all love it when the Aussies bag shooting gold at the Olympics. Well those Olympians come from our gun and shooting clubs. And a lot of politically correct city people simply don’t understand the need for firearms on farms or exactly how they’re used by people on the land. However I want to say something about the gun laws they have in America. There is much to admire about America but one thing I don’t understand is their inability to stop the shocking massacres of their own citizens in their schools, cinemas, shopping malls and now music concerts. Every time I hear of another mass shooting in America I shake my head. This is the country that put a man on the moon. The issue is of course the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution which provides for the “right of the people to keep and bear arms”. In Australia no such provision exists in the Constitution and after the Port Arthur massacre that killed 35 people and injured 23, the National Firearms Agreement came into existence in 1996 with the aim of preventing any similar atrocities. The Agreement has been successful in greatly reducing the instances of firearm deaths. Australia’s murder rate is also a fraction of America’s. There hasn’t been a mass shooting in Australia since Port Arthur but in the 18 years leading up to it there were 12 others. In May this year, the Shooters & Fishers Party tried to undermine the National Firearms Agreement by seeking to pass laws in the New South Wales Parliament which would introduce “personal and property protection in the home” as a reason to own a gun. The provision is similar to the US Second Amendment and would essentially allow anyone in NSW to own a firearm if they state that the reason is personal and property protection. I don’t support US-style gun laws where virtually anyone has the right to carry a firearm. Let’s face it, there are some people who shouldn’t be let anywhere near a gun. Most people could think of someone in that category. I doubt the NSW Police would agree with the Shooters & Fishers’ legislation. The Shooters & Fishers Party needs to give an explanation as to why they want to dismantle the National Firearms Agreement and how they think giving virtually everyone the right to a gun makes our communities safer.

Existing Road Name: Wards Road Extent description: An existing privately owned and maintained Right of Carriageway (ROW) (approximately 1.653 kilometres in length) located off Wards Road Megalong Valley NSW 2785, which provides vehicular access to approximately nine (9) properties. Reasons: 1) The existing address numbering for properties accessing off the ROW is non-sequential and these properties require renumbering. 2) As the ROW is an extension off Wards Road, the allocation of distance based numbering to properties accessing from the ROW, could result in the numbering of properties accessing directly off Wards Road being too large. This could create issues for emergency services. 3) The current road naming does not comply with the requirements of the NSW Addressing Policy No. 2, 2015 and Clauses 6.2.3 and 6.7.3 of the NSW AUM. Should any person wish to have input into the naming of these roads, then written submissions will be accepted by Council up until Friday 20 October 2017. Please send your submissions to PO Box 19, Lithgow 2790. Further information may be obtained by contacting Fern-Alice Finn in Council’s Environment & Development Department, on (02) 6354 9999 between 11:00am and 2:00pm (Mondays to Fridays).

ABOUT YOUR WATER METER Every (property) has its own water meter. The meter registers all water used at your property and is shown as water consumption on your account. Your meter is usually located outside the front of your property, near the left or right boundary. Water flows through the property service pipe (main to meter) into a measuring chamber inside your meter. The type of meter you have and its appearance may vary between properties. You as the property owner are responsible for looking after and preventing damage to your meter, and for providing easy access for our staff to the meter and connections to the water main. Meter maintenance & accessibility It is your responsibility to ensure that your meter (box) is accessible. The meter must be at ground level. Please do not fill the area around the meter or cover it with garden beds, trees or shrubs or other matter. Meter Access is Your Responsibility Council requires a minimum clearance of 30cm around your meter, to make it accessible to our reader. You can help maintain access to your meter by; Trimming long grass and pruning overgrown plants in the vicinity of your meter Avoiding concreting around or building over the top of your meter Ensuring that the meter remains at or above ground level Displaying a caution sign if you have a dog and securing the dog from the meter area if possible. If, for any reason we are not able to read your meter, we may leave a card behind for you to contact Council to arrange a time. Now is a great time to check your meter to ensure it is clear and accessible. Please exercise caution when removing water meter covers. They can be homes for spiders and snakes. Ensure your wear protective gloves.

TEAR UP THE PAPER, LEARNER DRIVER LOG BOOK GOES DIGITAL Local Member for Bathurst Paul Toole has today announced the statewide launch of the digital learner driver logbook as an alternative to the outdated paper version.

“This move is about bringing the logbook experience into the digital age. Any parent or learner would agree it’s time for a system that taps into the latest technology to become more user-friendly,” Mr Toole said. From today, all learner drivers will be able to use one of three apps – Licence Ready, Roundtrip and L2P – to log the required 120 hours of driving practice and then submit their logbook electronically with RMS. Parents and learner drivers are tired of having to manually enter their hours of driving, so by transitioning to a digital format we hope to make this process more user friendly. Earlier this year the NSW Government held a trial for 100 Western Sydney and regional NSW learner drivers to test a set of chosen applications. Now after a series of fine-tuning and technical advancements all learner drivers in NSW will have the option to make the switch from paper to smartphones. The apps are designed not to distract learner drivers or their supervisors while driving and ensure learners abide by all applicable road rules relating to the use of mobile phones in vehicles.

The apps include a ‘set and forget’ feature where learners can start their logged drive on the app before getting in the car, and it will record their drive in the background. We want to ensure learner drivers can focus on the important task of acquiring the skills and experience to become safe drivers. Minister for Finance, Services and Property Victor Dominello said the digital initiative is a great example of the NSW Government making life easier for people by embracing technology. MEDIA: Paul Toole 0407 962 357 “We are committed to delivering initiatives that are fit-for-purpose in the 21st century. There are already a range of apps that assist motorists so it makes sense to utilise technology to improve the learner driver experience,” Mr Dominello said.  Verify a learner’s valid licence  Verify a supervisor/instructor valid licence  Electronically submit their digital log book to RMS when at their local Service NSW centre. In addition to logging hours and verifying details, the apps make use of GPS tracking, automated weather conditions, profile set up as well as summary dashboards. Learner drivers will be able to work with their supervisors to choose which app suits them best to help build their driver competencies. When not driving learners can also make use of extra features such as video learning content, goal setting and lesson planning.

The Rewnewable Energy Hub, Wrap-up

By Thomas Ebersoll, Lithgow Environment Group (LEG)

This is the last article in the series on Lithgow Environment Group’s 7 Point Plan with which we intend to promote renewable energy in Lithgow. • We described our Charity Solar program where we offer to fund-raise for solar installations on roofs of charities to cover their day time electricity needs. The first system will be on the admin building of the Hoskins Uniting church. • Similarly we encouraged businesses to use solar for their day time electricity needs. • We proposed a Pumped Hydro scheme for Energy Australia’s lakes in Lithgow. • We looked into possibilities to help the poor to get out of the trap of energy poverty. • We drew up opportunities for Council to cut their electricity bills and set up a rates based system for residents and businesses who want to install a solar system. • And finally we looked at possibilities of setting up a Renewable Energy Training Hub at Wallerawang power station which could become a leading institution in the transition to the new renewable energy economy. We need to point out that we are no out to destroy the mining industry. All the points we have made are to diversify Lithgow’s economy and to grasp the opportunities which are presenting themselves. They are as much an economic opportunity as they are to reduce our carbon footprint. In recent times in Australia, our political leaders have shown no capacity to shift us towards policies and actions that will sustain us into the future. Entangled in a web of political donations, powerful lobbyists and political power games our leaders have failed us. The mantra of neoliberalism and economic greed has taken over politics the world over. With the help of a corrupted media (except our wonderful Village Voice) and vested interests we are made to believe that the only way forward is further destruction of the natural world (which sustains us) and every other creature who calls it home. In that process scientific facts are labelled as leftist conspiracies and attacked with fearmongering and fake news. Our approach is based on the community level. We appeal to peoples ‘altruism’, the ability to care for each other. The ability to care and work together has set us apart from the

other creatures and that’s the reason why we are so ‘bloody’ successful. We need to redirect our abilities to the care of each other and our environment if we want ’this show to go on’. Our Renewable Energy Hub is a start. So please join us in our campaign. We’ve got a lot to do. We urge anyone with a bit of time and some altruism to come and give us a hand. Let’s strive to create a new economy, one that treats both people and planet with the respect. And let’s start here in -still- beautiful Lithgow.

The program of activities will start at 10am & finish the next day after a night of activities, including a band (featuring Bob Sutor), a dinner (bookings essential), Flicks in the Stix, spotlighting & free camping & fire-side yarning. While there is an army of helpers involved the main organizers are Helen Riley, Sharon Riley & Patsy Woolfenden. “The area around the Port Macquarie Homestead has special significance for us. We’ve done a lot of work around there. For us it’s all about culture & family. And if we look after the land & waterways, the land & waterways will look after us”, she said. “I would also like to thank everyone who has helped out again this year: to the Emirates & Bunnings for their support of the evening meal; and also especially to Lithgow City Council, the Workies and to the NSW Department of the Premier & the Cabinet, whose support has been invaluable and so many others: thank you all,” said Helen Riley. New shipping ‘club’ launching this week, a welcome move for retailers The National Retail Association (NRA) has today welcomed the arrival of Australia Post’s new shipping membership program, Shipster, as a crucial move toward helping Australian businesses keep up with a rapidly-changing consumer market. NRA CEO Dominique Lamb said while innovative retailers were constantly changing up their business models to keep step with consumer demand and a changing social environment, they still had to factor in ways to deal with cost imposts outside their control. “Out-of-date legislation, costly red tape, unsustainable penalty rates and unnecessary compliance costs trickle down into higher prices to consumers, so any move that gives customers the opportunity to significantly reduce their shipping costs is a welcome one,” Ms Lamb said. “Reducing shipping fees supports Australian retailers, who can better support Australian jobs,” she said. Australia Post’s Shipster launches today – with more than 40 Australian retailers already on board to help shoppers in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisance skip shipping costs on eligible purchases by paying a one-off fee to subscribe until January 1, with an option to extend the service with a low, ongoing monthly fee. “Retailers understand that convenience, speed, value and experience are crucial for attracting modern consumers, so we welcome any initiative that strengthens these offerings. “The world has moved on from bricks Vs clicks to a full omni-channel approach, so something as simple as cutting out the hefty shipping fee that comes on the end of a purchase allows our retailers to leverage technology to enrich their offerings and strengthen brand loyalty,” she said. The NRA said online retail currently makes up less than eight per cent of total purchases, however retailers needed other industries to embrace the changing consumer landscape, to collectively strengthen the domestic industry. “We’d like to see this initiative rolled out nation-wide and further offers moving forward, to help Australian retailers remain competitive and continue to merge into true, omni-channel brands,” she said.

Portland must be one of the best places to live in – ever! This small rural vicinity with a wealth of historic enterprise encompasses a quiet, progressive community with all the basics of life and much more (and only about 20 minutes’ drive from Lithgow). By Miriam Palmer, GINDAAY. Amongst many services, Portland has an Olympic swimming pool, library, two doctors, a dentist, a Bowen therapist, a solicitor, a physio, a supermarket, post office, three hairdressers, a bank and real estate – service station and mechanic, a hospital and nursing home, two schools and a preschool, a gym, a shop for preloved items, an RSL, a variety of eating-out places, and take-away, two clubs – a bowling club and a golf club, two fire brigades, a quilters’ group, a theatre and pub, a newsagent, police station, CWA, chemist, butcher, Men’s Shed, five churches and forgive me for what I have left out! Yes, we have a skate park and sports fields (one being our showground), also a variety of community groups and events. This town is also the headquarters of the area newspaper, the Village Voice – not to miss mentioning the warm, friendly people. If you come along to Portland you will see an amazing display of yesteryear Aussie insignia painted by the gifted signwriters, and the remains of the Portland Cement Works which made Portland “the town that built Sydney” – and Canberra. The above list is not complete because in Portland there is an after-school youth drop-in centre called Gindaay (meaning HAPPINESS). This operates on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3 to 4:30pm. in school terms. Welcoming volunteers provide refreshments in the form of milo, fruit –mostly apples and toast. Students enjoy a range of activities including air hockey, snooker, ping pong, Wii, internet and computer games, crafts and board games. In an atmosphere of mutual respect young people can socialize and connect with their peers and caring adults. (This is all free.)

The Drop – In Centre would like to invite you to a Promotion/Fundraiser evening on November 4 from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. in the Function Room above the RSL on Wolgan Street, Portland. The cost is only $15 for a fun night of trivia, live music, a silent auction and finger food. Children 7-13 years, $5; 6 and under, free - and a family

ticket is $40. For more information please contact Austin Bradley on 0408347443; or Miriam Palmer on 6355 4104 or email, impalmer@swissmail.org Tickets may be previously bought at Portland Post Office and Portland Newsagency or if need be, at the door on the night.

Spider back in action at PCS

Students at Portland Central School were very excited to see their ‘Spider’ climbing equipment open again when they returned to school this week. The climbing equipment had been closed off from use for over two years after a routine inspection found the softfall surrounding the equipment had deteriorated and was not up to current standards. Over $12,000 was required to fix the softfall, and this amount had to come entirely from fundraising. The school staff and the P&C have worked tirelessly to fundraise with various events over the past two years to cover the costs of the replacement. “I would like to thank everyone involved in supporting the school and assisting us to get this our spider open again for our students enjoyment,” said The target amount was achieved earlier this year, however the Department of Education stipulated that the work could only take place in the recent school holidays to ensure it dried correctly. The previous holidays were considered to be too cold. The students absolutely love having the ‘spider’ and their laughter could be heard all through the school during break times this week.

RedAss Downhill State Series Finale in Lithgow this weekend The gravity mountain bike crowd and events promoter Rocky Trail Entertainment will literally descend into Lithgow this weekend for the RedAss Downhill State Series Finale. Competitors and their families and supporters from all over NSW and the ACT will arrive from Friday and entrants will have the opportunity to do practice runs. After a final track inspection, seeding race runs will commence on Sunday at 11:30am with final race runs estimated to start at 1:30pm. The RedAss Downhill State Series Finale will take place on Sunday, 15 October 2017 on the Pony Express track of the local Central Tablelands Mountain Bike Club with its event centre at the Lithgow Pony Club on Hassans Walls Road. Lithgow City Council Mayor Stephen Lesslie said “It’s great to see that the Downhill State Series Final will be held in Lithgow as it will attract lots of riders and will support our local Mountain Bike Club.” In the Elite Men's it will be a showdown between Hamish Cowan and Central Coast's Duke Millington who are on the same amount of series points after four rounds so far. Lithgow's own Joel Willis sits in fourth place ahead of the final round on his home track. Local rider Zack Hutchison is also racing for podium positions, currently he is third in the Under 19's category. In the Elite Women's, Campbelltown's Kellie Weinert holds a solid lead. It will be an action-packed weekend and an exciting opportunity to watch the performances of the state's top downhill athletes.

Life First - Fire & Rescue NSW launches new recruitment campaign Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) today launched its 2017 recruitment campaign, Life First, and is calling on community-minded men and women to join its ranks. FRNSW Commissioner, Paul Baxter QSO, said the campaign was designed to attract a diverse range of applicants from all industries and fields. “We need people with problem solving abilities, who enjoy team work, are resilient, have good judgement and are motivated,” he said. “By creating a broader view of a ‘firefighter’, we can tap into more skills, more capability and more talent. “We want to attract people who might not otherwise consider joining fire and emergency services. “Firefighters help anyone, anywhere, anytime. They respond to any emergency and are also passionate about safety, education and prevention.” Long-time FRNSW Station Officer, Jeff Boyd said being a firefighter was no ordinary job. “For us game day is every day - we are here to save lives and property and we are trained to get it right – every time,” he said. FRNSW Equipment Management Unit Manager, Inspector Cheryl Steer claimed that upholding the tradition of FRNSW, with its long history of excellence, is testament to a strong team which puts life first. “We understand our local communities because we are part of the communities we serve. As their needs grow and change, so does our role in serving them,” she said. “Being a firefighter provides you with the opportunity to make a real and ongoing difference to the people of NSW as well as Australia and the world. We work in close-knit teams and are trained to be able to respond to emergency incidents both domestically and internationally.” Recruitment information sessions will be held at the NSW Teachers Federation Conference Centre, 37 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills on 19 October 2017. The two-week application process will commence on 1 November 2017. For more information or to reserve your place at the information session, visit https://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/ page.php?id=10

Three Bathurst-based artists are among nine from regional NSW to share $90,000 from the Create NSW Young Regional Artist Scholarship initiative. The next round of this funding closes October 30. Jesse Alston, Johanna (JoJo) WIlliams and Ben Rodwell each received a $10,000 scholarship in the most recent round. Each are a recent or soon-to-be graduate of the CSU B Communication Theatre / Media course. Each also spent time with Arts OutWest executive director Tracey Callinan to develop and fine tune their applications before submitting. Annually the scholarship initiative rewards 25 artists aged 18-25 across the state, in all art forms – from dance, design, digital arts, history, Aboriginal arts, literature, music, theatre, screen and curatorial to the visual arts. The programs designed by the three Bathurst artists are: · Jesse Alston will develop a unique artistic theatre practice and a new body of work through the study of practical animation and professional mentorship from modern theatre practitioner Nel Kentish. · Ben Rodwell will develop a directing practice through a week-long directing course and combine with knowledge from working with international and nationally based children’s theatre companies to create a short development with the support and

Pictured: Tracey Callinan and Ben Rodwell mentorship of regionally based artists. Johanna Williams will develop her skills as a playwright/dramaturge through internships and attendance of arts festivals and conferences to develop new work that will involve creative development and mentorships in Bathurst. The selected nine artists from the first round this year span a diverse range of artforms including circus, music, film, theatre and the visual arts, and will each receive a $10,000 grant to support a self-directed program. The Scholarships will officially commence on 1 November when the group comes together for a twoday professional development training workshop at Carriageworks in Eveleigh curated by Create NSW, before they each embark on their own chosen programs. During the workshop they will receive expert advice, business management lessons and networking opportunities with a range of leading industry figures, visit arts organisations and meet the Minster for the Arts, Don Harwin. Create NSW CEO Michael Brealey commented, “This Scholarship offers truly once-in-a-lifetime professional development opportunities that cross both international and national boundaries. We’ve seen from previous recipients just what is possible, and we’re really excited to welcome our new artists with this unique learning experience.” ·

Applications for the Young Regional Artist Scholarship Round 2 are open until midnight, Monday 30 October 2017. For information on how to apply visit, visit www.create.nsw. gov.au or email arts.funding@create.nsw.gov.au
