Beanie Ball Fundraiser

Beanies for Brain Cancer By Christine Dodson

The Beanie Ball, which will be held on 2nd June 2017 at Lithgow Workman’s Club, has been organised to raise awareness for Brain Cancer. We are raising funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation and will have special guest “The Chief” Paul Harragon, who is an ambassador for the charity. I lost my sister Robin aged 49, last year to brain cancer after a 2.5 year battle with the disease. Prior to the diagnosis, Robin was a school teacher who had been working for 8 years as a Play Therapist at Westmead Children’s Hospital with sick children. She was athletic, vibrant, witty, compassionate, and the most stylish person you could know. When diagnosed we knew nothing about the disease, had no idea what to expect or how to manage Robin’s changing personality, withdrawal, mood swings and lack

of fight to live. What has prompted me to hold an event rather than just donate to the charity, is that prior to my sister being diagnosed with a brain tumour in January 2014, I had no idea of the prevalence of the disease. I don’t believe it receives the publicity or public awareness it ought to, even with these alarming figures; • Brain cancer kills more children than any other cancer • Brain cancer kills more adults under 40 in Australia than any other cancer • Brain cancer receives less than 5% of Government cancer funding

Hunter New England Health now have a Brain Cancer Coordinator which the Mark Hughes Foundation has fully funded. Helping raise more money for roles like this is my ideal - and would have been Robin’s too - while we wait for the research to continue in finding a cure.

What would have made a huge difference to Robin would have been a nurse similar to what the McGrath Foundation has begun, who is specific assigned to a patient. Someone with training within the field of neurology, someone who understands and has learned the specific requirements and psychology of what a brain cancer patient is going through. “It is estimated more than half of all patients
