From the Editor

This week, I turned 43. Not old to some, to others I am an ancient. What was interesting is I was thinking about ten years ago, when I was 33. I was 30 kilos heavier, very unfit, unhappy and stressed and on the brink of failure. That version of me seems a lifetime ago, and I have this amazing region and the life we have created here to thank for the fact that I feel healthier, happier, and more a part of a community than I ever have. Below is one of my favourite sayings. It is exactly how I feel at this point in my life. Have a Happy and Safe Easter.

Your Say Submitted by commnity members How sad but unsurprising our councillors are using the media to have their little foot stamping spats. Perhaps the energy they are wasting on pre-school tantrums could be poured into council work and changing minds of people like me, who fervently believe local council should be either abolished or amalgamated. Bev Matthews Wallerawang Send your letters to the editor to editor@villagevoice.net.au for publication in the Village Voice. Remember, the Village Voice is your paper and the more feedback we get from the community, the more we can do to help with isuues in the region.

Easter Long Weekend Waste Collection It will be business as usual over the Easter period for garbage and recycling services. "Garbage and recycling collection services will occur as normal and residents should put their bins out as usual on their collection day. Collections will occur as normal on Good Friday and Easter Monday" said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Stephen Lesslie. "Also with Easter comes additional chances to recycle so don’t forget to place your cards, cardboard, cans, bottles and empty cartons in your yellow recycling bin" concluded Mayor Lesslie.

Lithgow Ironfest: Steampunk gets people riveted From the Magpie Whisperer

“Lost World” is this year’s Ironfest theme, but an older ‘clan’ has me captivated. Steampunk was first introduced to Ironfest in 2011, and it’s one of fourteen different clans that together make Ironfest widely appealing and wildly successful. But until Steampunk came to Lithgow, I knew little about it. So, what’s its all about? The term itself apparently derives from science fiction novels, but it’s grown into a whole visual style and even a philosophy. It’s all about mixing old and new, blending the usability of modern technology with the design aesthetic of the Victorian era. It could be seen as a way of giving your personal technology a goth makeover. Imagine your laptop tricked up to look like a 1950s typewriter, or an iPhone dock that allows you to answer using an old brass and wood phone. It’s a different way of living and a joyful protest against rapidly advancing technology. Steampunk’s biggest impact has probably been in product design. It’s reignited a love of old fashioned materials: brass, copper, wood, glass, and all things mechanical. In its quest for the old, Steampunk has incorporated recycling, the reworked, and the imperfect. Retro-altered products, from jewelry with exposed cogs to coffee tables, are among hundreds of steampunk products now available online. The steampunk look has also influenced street fashion. Steampunk clothing adopts the look of the Victorian period: soldiers, explorers, lords, countesses and prostitutes, to street styles such as goth, burlesque, the leather and lace of pirates, and the frills and capes of vampires. There’s even a modern day environmental element, harking back to a time when the worst emission was steam from multifarious steam engines. Steampunk doesn’t always adhere to the Victorian look. Other popular alternatives are the American ‘wild west’, science fiction, or a fantasy that takes place in space or on another planet. Whatever the preferred era, steampunks share common interests. They relish retrolooking technology, making things for themselves and the romanticism of a time long ago. It’s an eclectic world of cogs and rivets, goggles and steam, and unlimited imagination. American young fiction author Caitlin Kittredge described it as being, “...a sort of Victorian-industrial, but with more whimsy and fewer orphans.”

LITHGOW DISTRICT CHAMBER NETWORKING NIGHT WORKSHOP

Lithgow District Chamber of Commerce hosted another successful event on Tuesday night at Lithgow Tin Shed.

The guest speaker, Glenn Kirkwood gave a fantastic talk to the 30 business owners in attendance about the value of actively building referrals to benefit their business. Glenn is a expert in the field of referrals and helps companies all over Australia develop strong networks that ultimately build their businesses. Also present on the evening were representatives from Leonard’s Advertising who have been engaged by Lithgow City Council to develop a brand and marketing strategy to assist with growth in tourism and the Lithgow Economy. They conducted a short workshop with the group to understand what the business communities feelings were in regards to the local area. The event was the second networking event hosted by the Chamber this year in a new schedule that is providing bi-monthly networking and education events to members. “We see it as part of our role to continue to bring high quality and informative speakers to the region to offer our members the very best opportunities to educate themselves and give them the tools and knowledge they

MENTAL HEALTH INNOVATION FUND ROUND 2 NOW OPEN

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole has today urged local organisations with innovative ideas to apply for a share in the $1.5 million Mental Health Innovation Fund. Mr Toole said the NSW Government’s Mental Health Innovation Fund is a way to find new, local initiatives that improve mental health services and outcomes across NSW. “This Fund provides an opportunity for the best minds in business, the community sector and government to develop and deliver new and creative ways to help people living with mental illness,” said Mr Toole. Collaborating partners may include start-ups, nongovernment organisations, the private sector, local businesses, carers or individuals working alongside all levels of government. “The Liberal and National Government is committed to seeing more people living well in the community. We know fresh approaches like these lead to better outcomes for those living with a mental illness while also reducing admissions in our public hospitals. “I am pleased local organisations in the Bathurst Electorate will have the opportunity to showcase new

approaches to improve mental health services across the state. Expressions of interest for the second round are now open, with target innovation areas including: • Mental health and intellectual disability/cognitive impairment • Aboriginal mental health • Mental health and youth homelessness • Adult education • Child and youth mental health Mr Toole said the Innovation Fund aligns with the Government’s commitment to Living Well, the Mental Health Commission’s 10-year road map to transform mental health services. The first round of the Innovation Fund has been finalised and the projects will be announced shortly. Expressions of Interest for Round Two of the Innovation Fund close on 9 May 2017.

NEWS Youth Week 2017 Events A Huge Success!

Issue 156 - 14 April 2017

The Lithgow Youth Week 2017 events were celebrated in style at the Lithgow Library with a Manga Workshop and demos at the Lithgow Skate Park this past week. Matt Lin worked with Manga and anime enthusiasts to hone their drawing skills and develop their style, while Newton’s Nation thrilled crowds with spectacular BMX and scooter demonstrations. “The Youth Week celebrations this year presented young people with a fantastic day out and an opportunity to hone their skills and express their creativity,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Stephen Lesslie. The Manga Workshop at the Library was booked out and was a huge success. Participants learned new techniques from expert artist Matt Lin, which included step-bystep demonstrations on how to draw manga characters, techniques for adding color and shading to characters, instructions for creating scenes within a story and advice on how to get published. Meanwhile at the skate park, professional coaches from Newton’s Nation worked with young people to develop their skateboarding and BMX skills and increase athletic ability. “These guys are amazing. Watching them is quite an experience. I feel inspired by the coaches and am glad to be here today,” said one of the participants. Jack Zammit, one of the coaches from Newton’s Nation said, “the young people here today are such an awesome group. It’s great seeing them hone their skills, support each other and simply enjoy this day”. The Youth Week events provided young people with an opportunity to immerse themselves in a creative form, to tap into free flowing expression to showcase their abilities and, to become involved in their community.

State Heritage Nomination for Eskbank House and Museum Lithgow City Council has nominated Eskbank House and Museum for inclusion on the State Heritage Register. “The listing of Eskbank House on the State Heritage Register is an important next step to ensure the protection of this unique and significant asset for Lithgow, and honours the generosity of Eric Bracey. We owe the Bracey Family a debt for preserving this historic site so that the community can enjoy it for generations to come,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Stephen Lesslie. At the Ordinary Meeting of Council on 10th April a motion to nominate Eskbank House and Museum for inclusion on the State Heritage Register received unanimous support. Such a listing would provide legal protections for this important historic estate under the Heritage Act 1977 and would increase potential for Council to access funding for maintenance, capital works and interpretation from the NSW and Commonwealth governments. Built in 1842 for early colonist Thomas Brown, Eskbank House has held a long and significant association with the coal, iron and steel industries in Lithgow. Through the generosity of local retailer Eric Bracey, Eskbank House was gifted to the Lithgow community and opened as a museum in 1966. As a rare and highly intact early Victorian town villa and with close associations with industry, Eskbank House meets the criteria for listing on the State Heritage Register as a property that is of particular importance to the people of NSW and enriches our understanding of our history and identity.

OLD4NEW VAN SAILING INTO BATHURST AND LITHGOW

FINAL BLAST FURNACE WORKS GET THE GREEN LIGHT

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole this week announced the Old4New van will tour to Bathurst and Lithgow in April to share advice with the boating public about choosing and maintaining modern lifejackets.

Locals will be happy to see the work site fencing removed in coming months as work begins for the final stages of the Blast Furnace Park refurbishment. Funding was announced this week for the iconic site, which is steeped in the history of Lithgow, and is an incredible reminder of Lithgow’s industrial past. The Blast Furnace site is the centrepiece of the Lithgow Cultural precinct and links a number of key heritage sites including the Lithgow State Mine, Eskbank House and Museum and Lake Pillans wetland. Previously the NSW State Government, through its ClubGrants scheme provided $300,000 to Lithgow City Council to promote this area as a key destination for enhancing the visitor economy. This has now seen an investment of over $1 million from the State and Federal Governments into Lithgow’s Blast Furnace. Lithgow Mayor, Clr Stephen Lesslie explained the money would be used for finishing of the work at Blast Furnace, including walkways, interpretive signage, resurfacing the parking area and generally making the site more useable for tourists and locals alike. Whilst the current round of funding does not include some much needed toilet facilities for the park, there is a hope that may be able to be addressed in the not too distant future.

The mobile van will be at the following locations where you can exchange your old lifejacket for a new slimline lifejacket at a discounted price:

Sunday 16 April: 2pm – 5pm Bathurst Court House, Russell St, Bathurst Monday 17 April: 8am – 1pm Lake Lyell Recreational Park, Magpie Hollow Road, Lithgow Trained staff will also provide advice on choosing the right lifejacket for your height, weight, ability and water activity, and tips on lifejacket care and service. “This is Old4New’s fourth season and the team is as keen as ever to get amongst our boating communities to spread the word about choosing the right lifejacket for your height, weight, ability and water activity,” Mr Toole said. “During this boating season the van will visit around 160 towns and communities throughout NSW to not only offer upgraded lifejackets, but also to give anyone interested in learning about lifejacket care and service the opportunity to speak with trained staff. “It’s important to take good care of your lifejacket and to care and service them to ensure they can do their job effectively if they’re needed. “And in NSW, it’s the law to service your inflatable lifejacket once a year or in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, so this is an excellent opportunity to understand exactly what you need to do to make sure your lifejacket always keeps you safe.” Sadly, 11 lives were lost in recreational and commercial boating accidents on our waterways last year, highlighting the importance of safety for all water enthusiasts regardless of age and experience.

ADDITIONAL $350,000 OF FEDERAL MONEY FOR LITHGOW BLAST FURNACE Lithgow’s iconic Blast Furnace project has received $350,000 under the Federal Government’s Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure Program. It comes on the back of $545,050 announced just a few months ago through the Federal Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund. This takes the total investment by the Federal and State Government into the project to just over $1.3 million. The upgrade to the blast furnace works is all about driving tourism to the Central West. Once this site is up and running, it will be a major tourist attraction for our region. It will enable public use of the state heritage listed facility and link in with other cultural and heritage facilities in the area. Additionally, it will create a performance space for events such as Ironfest, Lithglo, film festivals, vintage car events, and art installations.

Time is running out to enter FRNSW’s Brigade Kids Champion Competition Time is running out for budding young artists to enter the Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Brigade Kids Champion Competition. Children from Kindergarten to Year 2 across NSW are encouraged to use their creativity and imagination to help promote fire safety, and have the chance to win great prizes in the process. FRNSW Acting Commissioner Jim Hamilton said children are often unaware that a tiny flame can grow into a dangerous fire. “Their young age and inexperience with the dangers of fire puts them at high-risk. It is important that we teach children an escape plan and practice it frequently. The Brigade Kids Champion Competition launched today is intended to raise awareness of the importance of fire safety amongst children from a young age,” he said. “This competition complements our Fire Education Program which aims to reduce the severity of the tragedy and trauma caused by fires that can have lasting effects on children.” Supported by the NSW Department of Education, the Brigade Kids Champion Competition encourages children from Kindergarten to Year 2 in NSW to create a poster that promotes one of three essential fire safety messages: > Practice your Escape Plan and have a Safe Meeting Place > Get Down Low, and Go, Go, Go > Call Triple Zero (000) in the case of a fire The Brigade Kids Champions Competition closes on 23 April 2017, with entries to be submitted at www.brigadekids.com. Entries will be judged by a panel of representatives from the NSW Department of Education, Association of Independent Schools of NSW, NSW Teachers Federation, Catholic Education Commission NSW, the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, LEGO, Scholastic Australia, Hi-5 and the FRNSW Commissioner. Winners from each category have the opportunity to win an Xbox One from Microsoft, LEGO City packs, and fire safety certificates amongst others. In addition, the schools of the winning children will also receive gift packs from Scholastic. For more details on the Brigade Kids Champion Competition, please visit www. brigadekids.com, email competitions@fire@fire.nsw.gov.au or phone 8020 1401

Take the jab to beat the winter flu

NSW Health is urging pregnant women, the elderly and other high-risk groups to take advantage of a free flu vaccination – now available from GPs – ahead of the winter flu season. A vaccine protecting against the four likely circulating influenza strains is free for people eligible under the National Immunisation Program. This includes those who are pregnant, over 65 years of age, have severe asthma, diabetes and heart conditions, as well as Aboriginal people aged from six months up to five years and 15 years of age and over. Dr Vicky Sheppeard, Director Communicable Diseases, NSW Health, said it was vital for pregnant women to have the flu jab as they had an increased risk of hospitalisation, intensive care admission, pre-term delivery and possibly death if they caught the flu. “The flu vaccination is very safe for expectant mothers and their babies and also provides protection in the infant’s early months,” Dr Sheppeard said. “Pregnant women and people of all ages with chronic disease in Australia can receive the vaccination for free so I urge all eligible people to take up this opportunity to protect themselves and prevent unnecessary hospitalisation. “Children born to vaccinated mothers have a reduced

risk of contracting influenza in the first months of life.” Dr Sheppeard said only about 29 per cent of pregnant women in NSW were vaccinated against the flu last year and only about half of those with diabetes were vaccinated despite being eligible for the free vaccine. Less than 40 per cent of asthma sufferers in younger age groups took advantage of the free vaccine. “We encourage all people to get the flu vaccine but particularly the more vulnerable groups who not only have a higher chance of getting the flu but are more severely impacted by it.” The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) recommends that pregnant women be vaccinated early in the flu season as optimal protection takes effect four to six weeks after vaccination.` Influenza, commonly known as ‘the flu’, is a highly contagious illness. The virus is transmitted easily from person-to-person via droplets and small particles produced when infected people cough or sneeze, and through hand contact with contaminated surfaces. Influenza is characterised by a sudden high fever, cough (usually dry), headache, muscle and joint pain, feeling unwell, and sore throat.

April Market Update The last few weeks have seen APRA, the Reserve Bank and Australian politicians continue to discuss concerns about the housing market.

By Charles Tarbey, Chairman and Owner of Century 21 Australasia Following the Reserve Bank’s April monetary policy decision to hold rates steady, Governor Philip Lowe emphasised the need for strong lending standards in order to manage the increasing risk of growth in household borrowing outpacing growth in household income. At the same time, many major banks have independently increased their interest rates. My concern is how any legislative changes or independent movements in interest rates will play out in Australia with such disparate real estate market conditions from state to state, and even from one suburb to the next. What may be good for one market might not be good for the next, so regulators and politicians have their work cut out for them in both managing economic risks while also ensuring that the decisions they make are in the best interests of as many Australians, and markets, as possible.

Whilst some markets on the eastern seaboard could benefit from new lending restrictions or slight increases in interest rates, other markets such as Perth and Darwin could really struggle under such conditions. A key issue in Sydney is population growth and the lack of sufficient supply to support this growth. I am not sure the runaway prices in Sydney can be fixed without addressing supply side issues. Contrasting this market, the Victorian and South Australian state governments are good examples of state governments proactively responding to this need for supply. Measures to increase stock, such as creating new suburbs, have created a more balanced supply and demand situation in their respective housing markets and as such, markets more conducive to negotiation between buyers and sellers. In light of these diverse conditions, those looking to transact real estate over the coming months should ensure they have obtained the appropriate professional property and finance advice before doing so. Charles Tarbey is the Chairman and Owner of CENTURY 21 Australasia. He is regarded as one of the leading property experts in Australia with a huge amount of experience and knowledge from a lifetime of real estate involvement.

Want to learn how to identify woodland birds and their calls? On Thursday 4 May, come along to learn about woodland birds of the tablelands and western Blue Mountains. Birdlife Australia’s Woodland Birds for Biodiversity project coordinator, Mick Roderick is presenting a free, fun workshop at the Royal Hotel, Historic Hartley. “At this workshop you’ll learn about the temperate woodlands of the western Blue Mountains region and why our woodland birds are threatened. You will learn the basics of woodland bird identification, how to recognise different bird calls, how to record calls and how to do bird surveys on your smart phone,” said Mick. This workshop is supported by Central Tablelands Local Land Services and Birdlife Australia through funding from the Australian Government. It is free but you will need to register by Monday 1 May. Please contact Marg Duffy at Central Tablelands Local Land Services on 6350 3113 or marg.duffy@lls.nsw.gov.au

Autumn Gardening Cold climate gardens can come to life in Autumn with splashes of purple, rich reds, orange and gold colours and Autumn is all about trees. Planting a deciduous tree in your garden can provide that much needed shade in summer and award you with spectacular Autumn colour whilst allowing the sun to shine through in winter. The month of April is the best time to view the colours of Autumn in our district. Maples do particularly well in our area and the colours are spectacular at this time of year. As you drive through Lithgow take some time to observe the Liquidambars on the approach to the Visitors Centre and the Pin Oaks lining the Highway Medium strip over Autumn. Now is the time to view the amazing colours of Autumn and decide whether you have space for one special specimen tree. The Claret Ash (Fraxinus raywoodii) is a very robust tree and are tolerant of dry conditions one established. They change to a brilliant burgundy in Autumn and are a nice shady tree in Summer, there are many planted as street trees in an around Lithgow because they are very hardy. There are numerous varieties of plants flowering at the moment which include Chrysanthemums, Diascias, Ericas, Carnations, Dianthus, Violas to name a few. The Camellias are all budding and ready to burst into flower. Camellias prefer an acid soil and will not tolerate lime. They should be planted in a sunny to part shaded position. They are a robust evergreen shrub which can be used as a flowering hedge and are a great addition to any cold climate garden. In the Vegie Patch If you have not had a chance to pop in some winter vegies then you can still plant some broccoli, broccolini, cabbages and cauliflowers, Brussel sprouts and broadbeans. If you can mulch around them it will help to keep the warmth in the soil. Don’t forget to pop some Spring Bulbs in during April and look at planting out your garlic over the next month. Barbara Moran was a long time team member of GoodEarth Nursery at Lidsdale. She has an extensive knowledge and experience of both exotic and native gardens.

Thank you for your faultless service. It is without hesitation that we recommend the services of Richardson & Wrench Lithgow. Graham is punctual, articulate, friendly, professional and observant. He offered constructive, budget conscious ideas which, we believe, increased the value of our property whilst improving its saleability. Graham and the R&W team strive to achieve the very best result possible. A smooth, stress-free process in which every detail is attended to on behalf of their clients.

I was happy with the outset with my choice to list my home with Richardson & Wrench. After interviewing 4 Agents although choosing the right Agent was a difficult one, in choosing to list with Graham I felt confident with the process, price and outcome Graham felt he could deliver. The Sale price that Graham achieved was higher than anticipated by other Agents and was locked away quickly. Throughout the whole process, we were impressed with the communication and assistance from the entire team at Richardson & Wrench Lithgow. I would recommend their service without hesitation.

One for the whole family this Easter Saturday evening, terrific fun viewing. With a great cast including the voice talent of Russell Brand as EB, James Marsden and Kaley Cuoco (of Big Bang Theory fame). This story is about EB, the Easter Bunny’s son who is just not ready to take over the family business as he really wants become a drummer in a rock band! So EB leaves his home on Easter Island and heads to Hollywood in search of fulfilling his dream where he meets Fred (Marsden), who himself has no idea what career path to follow. SOME THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT THE VILLAGE VOICE

50% OFF Ads from any ads for Community Groups and Job Ads

just $50*

Local biz priority

We’re just like you

We call it our Fair Go Policy. Giving groups that work hard to raise money a fair go at promoting themselves, their events and their programs.

We know small business is tough, and advertising can sometimes be expensive.

We do our best to not promote out of town businesses. However, the commercial reality means we need advertisers.

We are a local small business just like you. We live in the Central West, we are raising a family and we are committed to the region.

We would rather advertise a local business wherever possible, to ensure we deliver on our promise of helping the local economy.

We are working hard in this region to drive the local economic future: not focussing on our shareholders’ returns.

It also applies to job ads, because we know how important jobs are in this region at the moment.

We have the cheapest prices of any publication in the region because we would rather see you get a return on your investment over the long term than sell you an ad one time.

And by the way... we have the largest circulation of any paper in Lithgow... even though we don’t pay for someone to count it...

the the

That’s how we support you. You can support us by taking an ad in our paper so we can continue to do what we have been doing for the last 3 years... building a strong community focussed paper. Give us a call on 6355 4258

Issue 156 - 14 April 2017 Portland Film Society Inc. SATURDAY APRIL 15 IS MOVIE NIGHT AT PORTLANDS CRYSTAL THEATRE

The next film to be shown by the Portland Film Society Inc at Portlands Crystal Theatre will be

Malcolm on Saturday April 15.

Thank you to our Community Planting Volunteers Lithgow is a community who cares about their environment

Malcolm is a 1986 Australian cult comedy film. The film stars Colin Friels as Malcolm, a socially awkward and shy man who is obsessed with trams. He is also a mechanical genius whose modest inner-city home is fitted with a variety of remarkable gadgets. Malcolm becomes involved with a pair of would be bank robbers, played by co-stars Lindy Davies and John Hargreaves. One of the features of the film is the car that splits in two. This was achieved by splitting a Honda Z down the middle then mounting each half on a separate motor cycle chassis. These were clipped together to form one car then unclipped to split the car in two. The drivable split car is now stored at the National Film and Sound Archives. The film won the 1986 Australian Film Institute Award for Best Film and seven other AFI awards including Best Script and Best Director. The program starts at 7pm with a short newsreel or film then a 15-minute intermission before the feature starts at around 7.45pm. If you would like to join the Portland Film Society Inc and enjoy monthly movies at the Crystal Theatre please email portlandfilmsocietyinc@gmail.com for a membership form.

Lithgow City Council Mayor, Stephen Lesslie said today “Council wishes to thank enthusiastic local residents who planted 400 native species at the community planting day held at the foot of Hassans Walls near the corner of Cregans Lane and Wrights Road on the weekend.” Hassans walls reserve is an important site for biodiversity within our area which has been under threat from weeds. Council has been implementing a program to control environmental and noxious weeds within the reserve. Reducing weeds improves habitat, reduces erosion and also improves the areas look and safety from fire. Filling the gaps where the weeds were with native species is essential to a bush regeneration project. This is where dedicated locals have shown that they care about looking after Lithgows environment by lending a hand to plant 400 native plants. In addition to contributing to improving the biodiversity in the area, the volunteers got out and active on a beautiful autumn day and met other likeminded members of their community. This project was made possible through funding and support from our project partners Local Land Services and Lithgow Oberon Landcare Association. It is one of many Natural Resource Management Projects currently operating within the Local Government Area. Local residents who missed out on this day still have the chance to be involved in upcoming events or planting days by contacting Council’s Landcare Coordinator Rechelle Fisher on (02) 6354 9999 or registering interest in volunteering on council’s website http://council. lithgow.com/environmental-projects/

Based on Jan Guillou’s trilogy about the fictional Swedish knight Templar’ Arn Magnusson. While the film is mainly in Swedish [ with subtitles] it also features languages spoken by the Monks that Arn grew up around, so it has English, Arabic, Latin and French. Arn is the son of a powerful Folkung dynasty in the mid -12 th Century. He grows up in a monastery belonging to the Cistercians and is trained in archery, swordsmanship and horsemanship by a former knight Templer, the brother Guilbert, who resides in the monastery. Later in the story, Arn comes across the very enemy of all Christendom, Saladin, but saves his life and the story takes an unusual twist.

Western Wildfires Cricket

Last month, 6 of the Western Wildfires players represented NSW against Queensland in Brisbane. The wildfires play in the NSW Veterans Cricket competitions with 6 of their players being selected to play in this annual “State of Origin” carnival. All up there were 8 teams selected, 6 sixty teams and 2 seventies with the wildfires players scattered throughout the teams. The final presentations were held at the Peter Burge (past Australian Player) Oval at the Redland Sporting complex (a Brisbane suburb). Pictured are: Neville Castle, Barry Fitzgerald, Graeme Glazebrook, David Hicks and Gill McGrath. Ross Baker was also in attendance. The 4 sixties players all had a win and a loss but unfortunately Gill and Ross who played in the seventies lost both games. All players contributed well to the teams they were in. The wildfires are next due to play a tournament in Mooloolaba Queensland in early August and then the state championships in Penrith in October.

Sober Driver Program – addressing a deadly problem in regional NSW

Regional drink drivers who repeatedly flout the law are turning their lives around thanks to a Corrective Services NSW program that has almost halved reoffending rates.

The Sober Driver Program is delivered by Community Corrections staff at 27 regional locations across NSW to men and women who are on court-based orders for serious and repeat drink driving offences. With the financial support of Transport for NSW, a website soberdriverprogram.nsw.gov.au/ has been launched with details about the program and its availability. Sober Driver Program Senior Project Officer James Ferguson said drink driving is a major issue for regional communities. “The majority of fatal crashes involving alcohol occur in the country areas of NSW,” Mr Ferguson said. “Alcohol is a factor in 16 per cent of deaths on regional NSW roads, and 20 per cent of road deaths in urbanised country areas. “Data shows a 44 per cent reduction in drink driving convictions for those who complete the program. “We attribute the success of the program to the financial support provided by Transport for NSW, and the ability of both agencies to work together to produce highly effective program resources and offender engagement strategies such as the new website.” High-range drink drivers are 18 times more likely than low-range drink drivers to be involved in a fatal crash, and more than a third of them have at least one prior drink driving conviction. Assistant Commissioner for Community Corrections Rosemary Caruana said the program helps offenders understand the consequences of getting behind the wheel when impaired by alcohol. “Every time someone chooses to drink drive they are putting themselves and the community at risk, often with devastating consequences,” Ms Caruana said. “The Sober Driver Program equips repeat and high-risk offenders with the information and skills they need to change their behaviour”. “It is proven to be more effective with this group than generalised education programs or public safety campaigns.” Lake Macquarie’s Trent Drew has been convicted of three drink-driving offences in the past nine years and said the program helps him understand where he was going wrong.

20

“I’ve been caught driving for low-range and mid-range offences but I didn’t think I was over the limit at the time,” the 29-year-old said. “What I thought was a standard drink was actually two or three – but the program has made me realise that if you want to drink, you just don’t drive. It’s as simple as that.” Program participants complete 18 hours of group work and two hours of take-home tasks, designed to help them understand their offending behaviour. Each group session uses educational and therapeutic approaches to help participants develop strategies to avoid those situations in the future. Mr Drew completed the program in November, having been sentenced earlier in 2016 to 100 hours’ community service for his third drink-driving offence. The young father says the program has given him a new perspective on his crimes. “I consider myself lucky because nothing happened to me – or to anyone else – while I was behind the wheel,” he said. “Things could’ve easily been very different.” NSW Centre for Road Safety Executive Director Bernard Carlon said ensuring the safety of motorists on regional NSW roads is a priority ahead of peak holiday periods. “We want regional drivers to think twice before drinking alcohol and getting behind the wheel,” Mr Carlon said. “If you’re going to drink, don’t drive. You need to plan ahead on how to get home after a night out or a weekend BBQ with friends or family.” CSNSW and Transport for NSW urge drivers attending Dubbo’s Nitro Circus, Queanbeyan’s Rodeo, the Narrabri Carp Muster or Anzac Day commemorations to keep safe and avoid drink driving.

Key Statistics > The Sober Driver Program was created in 2003 to help reduce drink driving related road deaths and serious injuries on NSW roads. > In 2016, 599 offenders completed the program with CSNSW in 79 programs across NSW. > The program targets repeat drink drive offenders as well as those who have committed range offence. a single serious or high > Research shows that drivers previously convicted of drink driving are approximately four times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than an average driver. > In 2015, drink driving was the third most common offence in NSW local courts (just behind common assault and possess illicit drugs). > In 2015, 18,636 people were convicted of drink driving in NSW - 12,762 or 24 per cent of these had prior drink driving convictions.

Lithgow Swimming Club Update

Lithgow Swimming Club held their first Club Championships in the new 50m outdoor pool and despite the terrible weather it was a great to see 52 swimmers competing and a lot of records broken. There was a lot of cheering for the family relay and mothers and fathers race, which were a terrific way to tend the summer season. The presentation night for the summer season will be held on Saturday 13th May in the new upstairs showroom at the Lithgow Workmens Club starting at 7pm. The theme for the night is come dressed as something starting with the letter ‘M’. The executive and coaches hope to see everyone there for a great night.

Rydal welcomes Shimano Mountain Bike Grand Prix racers

Round 2 of the Shimano Mountain Bike Grand Prix Series transformed the Rydal Showground into a vibrant cycling event centre. Riders from all over NSW and the ACT took part in the four and seven hour competitions that were held for the first time on the home tracks of the Central Tablelands MTB Club. Trent Pons and Briony Mattocks won the 4-hour solo races and Rohan Geddes and Gwynn Le Maitre took out the 7-hour classifications. With Owen Gordon and Scott Reynolds two juniors from the JetBlack Racing Team claimed he overall line honours with 18 laps completed on the circuit that was an instant hit with Rocky Trail’s racers. With 10 completed laps Trent Pons from Campbelltown was the winner of the popular 4-hour solo competition in Rydal on the weekend. In 4:08:11 he defeated race favourite from Wagga Wagga and winner of Round 1 at Glenrock, Daniel Beresford, who crossed the line just over a minute behind him. Michael Crummy from Richmond came in third. In the women’s Briony Mattocks backed up her win at Glenrock in dominant form – 9 laps in 4:10:56 was the winning result ahead of Natalie Anderson (+20 min) and Elise Buriss (-1 lap). “I really liked this track”, said Briony Mattocks. “I am probably one of the few people who love climbs and I would have preferred a few more meters of elevation here, but the trail features and line choices were just so much fun and I had an awesome race – can’t wait to be back here soon!”

New venues to keep entertaining the riders

Mountain bike events promoter Martin Wisata from Rocky Trail Entertainment said that for the Shimano MTB Grand Prix he was constantly looking for new venues to take his racers to, “This events series has been running since 2009 and we want this series to have versatile and exciting trails – every year we look for new venues to add

COMMUNITY

to the event locations so that our loyal rider base gets to experience new race tracks.” He added that the facilities at Rydal had been ideal and the hosts from the Rydal Showground Trust as well as the local club so accommodating that plans were already in the making to hopefully return to the venue in 2018. “The location is right in the middle between Sydney and Canberra and with Lithgow City Council just minutes away, we can offer our riders a wide variety of accommodation options as well as ideas for exploring this beautiful region to make it a whole weekend away.”

Changing of the guards in the seven hour race

The Shimano MTB Grand Prix offers riders the options to race solo or in teams of two or three riders. One of the most exciting “races within the race” at Rydal was the battle for the overall line honours, which is awarded to the team with the most laps completed of all the riders in the event. Owen Gordon and Scott Reynolds from the JetBlack Racing Team completed 18 laps in 7:11:14 and defeated riders of the highest calibre, including Owen’s uncle Craig Gordon, former 24-hour Solo World Champion and a regular at Rocky Trail events who was competing in a pairs team as well. Rohan Geddes from Canberra won the general classification of the solo competition in the 7-hour race with 16 completed laps in 7:17:45 ahead of Brian Price (+6:06 min) from Faulconbridge and Garry James from Farrer (ACT, -1 lap). In the women’s Gwynn Le Maitre from Duffy won with 13 laps in 6:51:39 ahead of Meredith Quinlan (-1 lap) and Claudia Fiess (- 1 lap) from Sydney. The next series event of the SHIMANO MTB Grand Prix will take place at Ourimbah MTB Park near Wyong on 8 July, supported by the Central Coast Council. Online registration is open now via the Rocky Trail website.
