Lithgow Halloween `16 Dance-off to seal Ghoulish Record

SLATTERY’S OUTDOOR POWER CENTRE

6351 2404

349 Main St, Lithgow Grizzly ghouls from every tomb are closing in on Lithgow to seal the national Thriller dance record at Lithgow Halloween `16 on October 29. The dance-off in Main St to Michael Jackson’s 1982 mega-hit song will be led by internationally renowned King of Pop impersonator Jason Jackson. He will perform some of MJ’s most memorable tunes at 7.30pm. The dazzling show on the Main Stage will feature numerous elaborate costume changes before the ghostly gathering for the national record bid for the greatest number of costumed people to dance to the song Thriller at 8.30pm. Organised and hosted by Lithgow City Council, with support from local business sponsors including Lithgow McDonald’s, Centennial Coal, Energy Australia, Village Voice and Lithgow Workies, the event will again feature spectacular Vivid-style lighting displays and spooky decorations. The main shopping area will be transformed

into a fun-filled pedestrian zone with themed precincts, non-stop entertainment and a community Trick or Treat activity for children. With new surprises and a creepy Halloween theme, Jason Jackson promised fans who attended last year they “ain’t seen nothin’ yet’’. A singer/songwriter in his own right, his channeling the spirit of the original superstar begins before he sets foot onstage. In fact, Jason Jackson has decorated his home near Campbelltown throughout with blood red walls and gold trim, MJ memorabilia throughout and even a mini zoo with exotic concrete animals crafted by his father Armand in the backyard. Jason spends hours practicing his hero’s dance moves and singing style in a specially adorned rehearsal space, and his own original songs are inspired by Michael, whose song Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough encouraged him as a

the Editor This week I find myself pondering leadership. AFter watching debates between US presidential hopefuls and witnessing the political machinations in our own Council, I find myslef wondering if there are any true leaders left in politics. The Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius ruled from 161 to 180 A.D. and has maintained the reputation for being the ideal wise leader whom Plato called the “philosopher king.” His book “Meditations” has inspired leaders for centuries because of its timeless wisdom about human behaviour. Here are 10 things every great leader should know: 1. Understand that people exist to help one another. Marcus believed that even though there will always be people who live selfishly and those who want to destroy others, mankind was meant to live in harmony. “That we came into the world for the sake of one another,” he writes. And within society, leaders such as himself emerge. And it is their duty to be the guardian of their followers. 2. Be mindful of others’ humanity. Remember that every one of your followers, every one of your superiors, and every one of your enemies is a human being who eats and sleeps and so forth. It sounds obvious, but it is easy to belittle or to magnify the importance of others when you are making a decision about them. Remember that every person has dignity and pride. 3. Realise that many mistakes, even egregious ones, are the result of ignorance. When a person makes a decision that offends you, Marcus writes, first consider whether they were “right to do this” in the sense that they are acting in a way that is morally acceptable, even if it is against your own self-interest. In that case, do not spend energy complaining about it. If, however, they are behaving in a reprehensible way, consider their actions to be based in ignorance. It’s for this reason that many of these offenders “resent being called unjust, or arrogant, or greedy,” Marcus writes. When dealing with your followers, punishment or chastisement should thus be done in an educational way. 4. Do not overly exalt yourself. It is true that leaders should take their leadership roles seriously, but not in a way that makes them feel godlike in some way. Remember, “you’ve made enough mistakes yourself,” Marcus writes. “You’re just like them.” And if you’ve managed to avoid some of the mistakes your followers make, then recognise that you have the potential to falter and do even worse.

5. Avoid quick judgments of others’ actions. Sometimes what you initially perceive as your followers’ or your competition’s mistakes are more wise and deliberate than you think. “A lot of things are means to some other end. You have to know an awful lot before you can judge other people’s actions with real understanding,” Marcus says. 6. Maintain self-control. While it is natural to react to an offence by losing your temper or even becoming irritated, it is in no way constructive. To maintain control over your emotions, Marcus writes, remember that life is short. You can choose to spend your time and energy languishing over things that have already happened, or you can choose to be calm and address any problems that arise. 7. Recognise that others can hurt you only if you let them. Think about a time when someone insulted you, for example. You made the decision to let their words hurt you, when you could have instead pitied them for being ignorant or rude. The only actions that should truly hurt you, Marcus writes, are things you do that are shameful, since you are in control of your own self-worth and values. 8. Know that pessimism can easily overtake you. It is common to have strong emotional reactions to disasters, but behaving in this way only keeps you from addressing the challenges that arise and fills you with powerful negative thoughts. “How much more damage anger and grief do than the things that cause them,” Marcus says. 9. Practice kindness. Sincere kindness is “invincible,” Marcus writes, and more powerful than any negative transgression. It takes a strong leader to set aside ego and base emotions and behave with compassion. “What can even the most vicious person do if you keep treating him with kindness and gently set him straight — if you get the chance — correcting him cheerfully at the exact moment that he’s trying to do you harm,” Marcus says. 10. Do not expect bad people to exempt you from their destructive ways. While great leaders can do everything possible to behave in a constructive and compassionate manner, they must also understand that there are those who find meaning in destroying others. It is not only foolish, Marcus writes, but “the act of a tyrant” to think that you can try to change these kinds of people or persuade them to treat you differently.

The Magpie Whisperer I assume Mayor Lesslie is aware of the function of the news media in a democracy. It is to watch government. The media is not the council’s enemy. So there’s no point in antagonising them by criticising the media for wanting to take a look at the people who won election and how they achieved it. Mayor Lesslie ought to avoid making stream-of-consciousness statements critical of the media for doing its job. The Lithgow media has long been supportive of the local community and is generally well-regarded He may have considerable urban council experience, but Lithgow is not Drummoyne. The council’s decision to sack the general manager was not unanimous, and the mayor voted against it. But it was decisive action, and democratic. Now, especially, Mayor Lesslie needs to demonstrate strong leadership without being overbearing. He should concentrate his focus on managing his fellow councillors as a functioning team, and with them, put together an action plan to take Lithgow forward. We need a mayor people want to follow, not someone people would rather avoid.

Role of mayor easier with media behind you The decision by the new Lithgow Council to terminate the general manager’s contract, in order to swiftly resolve long-festering staff/management problems, is encouraging. Under normal circumstances, Mayor Stephen Lesslie and his team should be given the chance to do their work with the least distraction. But the media should always be there to watch them, and not be afraid to criticise them when the need arises. At the Lithgow Council meeting on monday, 10 October last, Mayor Lesslie’s opening remarks were highly critical of the Lithgow Mercury’s coverage of the mayoral election. He stated: “Those councillors looked at the issues and the candidates and chose the one they considered would do a better job. It is called democracy.” That’s not quite what happened. Four councillors chose Cr Marie Statham, four councillors chose Cr Lesslie, and Cr Ray Thompson abstained. Both names were put in a barrel, and one was drawn out and declared the winner. Cr Lesslie got lucky. It may be official procedure, but calling it democracy? That’s a hard sell.

gravely ill child battling cancer. The first Michael Jackson impersonator in Australia, Jason has been performing since winning a talent quest at age eight. For the past 30 years, he and his mother Teresa have handmade his ornate costumes. “I create my own world in a Michael kind of way,’’ Jason said. “When I go on stage I believe I am Michael Jackson. He’s the man I want to be.’’ Lithgow Mayor Stephen Lesslie encouraged everyone to take part in the Australian record-breaking dance-off and dress in costume: “The Thriller dance was very popular at last year’s event and promises to be another opportunity for the council to nurture community spirit, we look forward to welcoming all visitors to our region. “I am pleased to see that businesses in the CBD are enjoying the fun and going to great efforts with their window displays for the enjoyment of locals and the many visitors who traditionally attend Lithgow Halloween.’’ As in previous years, the family-friendly Lithgow Halloween `16 will include something for everyone, with a range of free community events in public spaces through to ticketed events at private venues. Clr Lesslie recommended visitors stay overnight in the area to fully explore the surprisingly diverse range of scenery, dining options and activities available in Lithgow and surrounds including the Back to Hartley event at Hartley Historic Site on the way to Sydney on Sunday, October 30.

Shock dismissal of Council’s General Manager By Rich Evans Lithgow City Council General Manager, Roger Bailey, had his contract terminated last Wednesday night during an extraordinary meeting of Council. Termination came after council debated - for two and a half hours - a confidential staff survey report into allegations of cultural and behavioural issues within Council. The councillors came to the decision after the lengthy debate where Councillor Wayne McAndrew had argued for more procedural answers to the allegations. “I put forward a proposition that we should advise the General Manager that his requested contract extension was denied, but that we would honour the remainder of his contract, and that we should bring in an external expert to assess the management and behavioural issues raised in the internal staff survey; that was unfortunately defeated,” said Councillor McAndrew. "I think this is an over-reaction to an issue raised in an internal survey that was commissioned by the Council management," said Mayor Stephen Lesslie. The Mayor said he had been impressed with Mr Bailey's professionalism during the short time he had been able to work with him. Regardless of the content of the staff survey, the question that needs to be asked is why there was such urgency on terminating the general manager's contract, in such a way that will now cost the council a significant sum of money?

GREAT BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY

Last year, Lithgow Council won the Bluett Award for being a progressive Council, this was received under the stewardship of Roger Bailey - yet there was a rush to act on this report so early into the term of the new Council. How much could have changed in that space of time? “This is a decision for Council to make, however, it is a very big decision to take so early in this term,” said Minister for Local Government and Bathurst MP, Paul Toole. “I would urge the Council to explain to the community and residents of Lithgow why they took this decision and focus on working for the benefit of the local community,” Said Mr Toole. There has been much public outcry about the potential cost of a by-election if actions against Clr Ticehurst lead to his suspension from local government. A byelection is reported to cost approximately $150,000; however, Council's decision last Wednesday night is likely to be in excess of $200,000 and possibly closer to $400,000, once the cost of finding a replacement general manager, further consultants and payouts of contracts are taken into account. At a time when the council is trying to still prove itself to be financially fit for the future, the question must be asked what the motivations were for such aggressive action. This action potentially leaves a $550,000 black hole in Council's budget. With the imminent amalgamation of Bathurst and Oberon Councils, this action has bought the focus onto Lithgow Council at a time when they were perhaps better just getting on with the job.

Lithgow City Council Mayoral Chain Found After not being used for many years the Lithgow City Council’s Mayoral chain has been put back to use. Unfortunately the chain has been idle for some time but Council’s new Mayor, Cr Stephen Lesslie, wore it at the Mayoral reception to honour the Lions Club of Lithgow last week-end. “The Mayoral chain is a link to our past,” Cr Stephen Lesslie said. “Every former Mayor has their name engraved on a link,” Cr Lesslie continued. “The first name is Alderman G Donald and the last name is Alderman H.G. Coates but there are sufficient blank links so that the chain can be brought right up to date” said Cr Lesslie. Regrettably the Mayoral robes have also been unused and have suffered badly as a result of their age and cannot be repaired to their former glory. However Cr Lesslie has indicated that he intends to wear the robe during Halloween celebrations.

CSU IN CANBERRA A SUCCESS - BARNABY BACKING NEW MEDICAL SCHOOL Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee said today that he was delighted that the Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce is backing the Murray Darling Medical School proposal put forward by Charles Sturt University and La Trobe University. Charles Sturt University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Vann, the Executive Director of the Medical School, Mark Burdack and Mr Gee today met with Dr David Gillespie, the Assistant Minister for Rural Health and then Barnaby Joyce to push the proposal. “I think we’re all very chuffed that Barnaby is backing the proposal. He really gets that there is a shortage of doctors in country Australia and he understands the value of training doctors in the bush for practice in the bush,” Mr Gee said. “The argument that the knockers throw back at us is that there is an oversupply of doctors. I don’t accept that. If there is an oversupply of doctors, why does country Australia have to recruit so many from overseas? If there is such a shortage of university medical spots and training places, why are the city universities giving up so many of them to overseas students? What about the country students? Why shouldn’t they have more places? This is about equity between the city and the country,” Mr Gee said.

“There may not be a shortage of doctors in Double Bay but there sure is in so many of our country communities. To fix this problem we can either take Medicare provider numbers out of the city and quarantine them for country Australia which is not my preferred option, or try something that we know will work – building a country medical school across country NSW and Victoria. The time for this project has come.” Mr Gee said. “I am greatly encouraged by the support of Barnaby Joyce and The Nationals. We had hoped that today’s visit to Parliament House would keep the momentum for our medical school going and I believe we have achieved that and we are going to keep at it,” Professor Vann said. “There is clearly a shortage of doctors in country Australia. The research has shown that students who study in country areas are more likely to live and work in country areas after they graduate. The current system is not working but we know the Murray Darling Medical School will work and make a real impact on medical services in country Australia,” Professor Vann said.

ANDREW GEE

Federal Member for Calare

FIGHTING FOR LITHGOW FUNDING WIN FOR BLAST FURNACE PROJECT! AGED CARE The push for more aged care beds for Lithgow Aged Care is on. I recently wrote to Federal Health Minister, Sussan Ley, to impress upon her the importance of aged care beds in Lithgow. I also had a conversation with her about this issue. Although the Minister does not take part in the formal decision making process for new aged care beds, I was very pleased that representatives from the Australian Government did sit down with Lithgow Aged Care and let them know how their previous application for new beds could be improved. Applications for new aged care bed licenses are now open and will close at the end of October. I have certainly let the Minister know how important this matter is for the Lithgow community and I will be supporting Lithgow Aged Care’s application to the hilt. There have also been offers of support from the wider community to assist with the application and I confirm I have passed these on to Lithgow Aged Care. It is now a matter of putting forward the best possible application and continuing the lobbying efforts!

LITHGOW SMALL ARMS FACTORY I recently visited Lithgow’s Small Arms Factory Museum and loved seeing the work and community involvement in this collection that showcases the industrial heritage of our nation.

Minister for Regional Development, Fiona Nash, recently made a surprise visit to Lithgow to assist me in announcing funding for major upgrade works on the Lithgow Blast Furnace. The grant of $545,050 comes under the National Stronger Regions Funding Scheme which will allow Lithgow City Council to commence the next stage of the upgrade. The Blast Furnace is now set to become a hub of cultural and tourist activity. It will host a whole range of community events and be a precinct for music, theatre performance, photography, film production and outdoor recreational activities. The project will deliver new pathways and walkways, viewing platforms, improved signage and power connectivity to the site. The blast furnace is part of Lithgow’s (and Australia’s) industrial heritage and is a unique tourist attraction. This is a fantastic result for the Lithgow community and for the future of tourism and cultural heritage across our region!

ZIG ZAG PUBLIC SCHOOL 125TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

The museum is a great local institution that is run entirely by volunteers.

Past and present s t u d e n t s , teachers, parents and friends gathered at the Zig Zag Public School recently for an official ceremony to celebrate its 125th anniversary. A great event showcasing one of our great local schools!

I am aware there is a long running issue regarding the museum’s occupation of the site, which is why I have written to the owner of the site, Thales, and requested that they meet with representatives of the committee, to start a process which should lead to a resolution of this issue. I have offered to attend the discussions if it helps in finding a solution. I recently attended a wonderful celebration of the Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY) in Lithgow. HIPPY is a home-based early childhood enrichment program which supports families and maximises the chances of a successful early school experience. The program is well established in the Bowenfels area and has been achieving some fantastic outcomes for the entire Lithgow community. Congratulations to the HIPPY team on a successful event and for their great ongoing work.

The residents of the Portland Tabulam Health Centre were delighted to receive a new Australian flag recently after their old flag had become tattered and torn from the long winter months. During my visit I also drew the Father's Day raffle, which was run by the Portland Tabulam Hospital Auxiliary. We're certainly very grateful for the work of our hospital auxiliaries’ right across NSW!

Vietnam Tour – La Salle Lithgow takes on the world……

By Peter Tracey During the last school holidays a group of staff and students from La Salle travelled to Vietnam as part of a tour organised by Vietnam School Tours which is owned and operated by Tram MacDouall who is the younger sister of comedian and artist Anh Do. Our journey started from the international terminal at Sydney when sad farewells were had prior to an 8 hour flight to Ho Chi Minh city. A short domestic flight to Hanoi saw us commence our Vietnam journey. Hanoi is an amazing place. The shock of the change in climate was hard to take. We left in a cold 4-5 degrees and arrived with 35 degrees of temperature and oppressive humidity, everybody adjusted well to the heat. Students had the opportunity to spend 2 days and an overnight trip on a traditional cruise ship in Ha Long Bay which forms a part of the Gulf of Tonkin. Such a peaceful place and with such an amazing topography. From Tai Chi in the morning to swimming in the afternoons, students even tried to catch squid off the boat after dinner. We travelled to an eco-adventure site and learned how to fill a rice paddy with water, plant rice and ride bike which to some was a new experience. Riding a water buffalo and fishing as well as other sporting activities ensured we were all tired in the evening. A great time was had by all. A cultural visit to the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh and his residence was also a highlight of our final day in Hanoi. Back on a plane for a short trip to Ho Chi Minh City

(Saigon) and the well placed Silverland Central Motel where we were to make our home base almost for the remainder of our tour. The Silverland is situated about 60 meters from the famous Ben Thanh market place where our students practiced the ancient art of bartering and where Brielle Mendham showed her true capabilities. Off to the Mekong Delta to spend a night in a homestay village where the food was fantastic and the rats were friendly……. From here we rode a bike to a school and participated in a class and played some sports with the local kids, all about the same age of our La Salle athletes. From the Mekong, we travelled back to Saigon and commenced our tour of the Nui Dat / Vung Tau area culminating in a short service at the Long Tan Battle site where 18 young men lost their lives in a famous battle on 18 August 1966. A very humbling experience for all or students who were very solemn in remembering those gallant young men. Overall, our trip was amazing. When asked what their highlights were there were a number of differing responses but when asked if they would do it again, almost all said they would in a heartbeat. Many thanks must go to Vietnam School Tours for brilliant organisation, Mrs Flood, Mrs Zyp and Mrs Felton for their efforts in keeping it all together and particularly those students who went on the journey they will be talking about for some time to come. From my perspective, a nicer group of very supportive and caring young people made this trip very worthwhile. I was very proud to have been a part of the experience. Well done everyone.

Opening Saturday; aspects OF alienation An exhibition by sculptor, Antony Symons

Some Lithgow locals may know Antony for his Marjorie Jackson sculpture that stands tall in the middle of Cook Street Plaza. While others may know him as that eccentric peculiar man that resides up on the end of New Street in Rydal. With a garden full of unusual monuments of his mind. Others may have witnessed him weaving in and out as he completes his daily chores, while others do not see him at all. He becomes a common ghost like so many of us in this customary life. Nevertheless, how you do or do not know him, his up and coming exhibition will expose you to the aptitudes of Antony Symons. “aspects OF alienation” An exhibition displaying Symons works over a thirty-year period. Twenty-two bronze sculptures and a selection of original cartoon illustrations. To be held at Eskbank House and Museum from Saturday the 22nd of October until Sunday the 13th of November. How Your Property Is Priced The first thing you should be aware of is a market appraisal is not a valuation.

By Christine Dodson, Richardson & Wrench, Lithgow If you are wanting a price on your property because you are thinking of refinancing or borrowing against you property, it is advisable to get in a Registered Property Valuer, this will be who is employed by the banks to give them an indication of the price that can easily be achieved and recouped quickly if the need arises. Market appraisals, on the other hand, are performed by Real Estate Agents (either Licenced Agents, or someone with a Certificate in real estate, who works under the Licensee) to provide advice on what sale price can be achieved for a house in the current market. When you call in an agent to give you a market appraisal, there are a number of things they look at. Before physically inspecting a property, a real estate agent will research properties in the area with similar attributes to yours. They will not only do a street search, but also a radius search. They will check what is on the market that your property will be competing against but more importantly they will be checking recent sold prices. Sold prices can be the most important indication, as most times – unless it’s an urgent sale agents will advertise a property at an optimistic price to try to maximise the return for a vendor. When an agent walks through your front door they will already have a price in mind from the research they have done, however once at your property, any improvements such as new bathroom, kitchen, carpets,

painting or gardens will play a part in increasing the price the agent may have first had in mind. If you are thinking of making any improvements just to achieve a better sale price, it’s advisable to get an agent through your property prior so they can indicate whether the improvements will help you achieve the desired outcome you’re looking for. Sometimes if you are looking to renovate a kitchen or bathroom, the return you will achieve won’t be worth the money and time you spend on it. However something as simple as a coat of paint may spruce up your property, so it presents better and you may achieve a quicker sale. While it’s a good idea to get agents through your property prior to making any changes and asking for their advice, it’s also a great idea to get them back through once you have made any improvements, so they can assess their first thoughts and alter the price accordingly. The price that a property is marketed at can fluctuate in accordance with the how the market is performing, including supply and demand of certain styles of properties and certain types of buyers in the area at the time. An agent should come to a market appraisal with supporting evidence such as a CMA (Comparable Market Analysis) to be able justify the price that they are appraising your property at. They should talk you through similar properties and reasons why they think your property is worth the indicated price. Usually they would have picked properties similar, properties below and above where your property sits on the pricing scale. As with anything, it’s a good idea to do your own research and ask a lot of questions. Check listed properties and sold properties on websites and attend any open homes so that you are better educated on current market values and have an idea yourself as to where your property sits.

7 DAY TV GUIDE Pitch Perfect By Kellie Evans

Pick Of The Week Pitch Perfect on Prime 7, Sunday 23rd October at 9:30pm

While this 2012 hit movie has all the makings of being an awesome girls night in flick, there’s actually quite a bit of humour to keep your guy interested, for a little while at least. Starring Anna Kendrick (originally of Twilight fame but recently has a great movie called Mr Right released on DVD), Brittany Snow (known best for Hairspray The Movie) and our hilarious Aussie export Rebel Wilson, this movie is funny and moving with random break out moments of song! For me, the best part of this movie is the final 20 minutes. Without giving it all away, its awesome and funny and, if you’re a fan of acapella, then you won’t want to miss it. And be sure to look for Pitch Perfect 2 as well as the much anticipated 3rd instalment, expected out sometime in 2017.

The Amazing Spring Colour of Maples

Pink flowering dogwood tree

Acers, commonly known as maples consist of more than 150 different species with the majority of them being deciduous. By Barbara Moran, Good Earth

They are easily grown in the Lithgow District with well-drained soil and an adequate amount of moisture required during Spring and Summer. The versatility of the maple varieties see them planted in situations such as street trees, rockeries or bonsai. Grafted weeping maples make superb feature plants and they are my personal favourite because in the correct position they will never disappoint you. What sets the maple apart is the remarkable range of colour variations particularly in Autumn with the Japanese varieties providing the richest colour in Spring and Autumn. The cooler it is in Autumn the more exciting the colours. The Japanese maples provide many options for landscape design featuring different textures and seasonal changes of foliage, together with a variety of heights and sizes. The foliage of the Japanese maple varieties are tender and can burn from wind and sun so therefore try to find a sheltered position for them and they will reward you. The colours this Spring particularly in the red and purple varieties are intense. If you get a chance to view some of the open gardens around the district at the moment the rhododendrons, azaleas and maples are looking spectacular. If you have not considered a Maple for your garden then it is not too late, now is the perfect time to plant them and you will enjoy it for many years to come. Looking spectacular around the district are the Cornus florida (dogwood) trees. Dogwoods are a delightful small tree very suitable for cool climates. They display delightful flowers, foliage and handsome stems. The colours range from a creamy white to pink. They grow to a height of around 3 to 4 metres and a width depending on the varieties from 1 to 4 metres. They are very suitable to a small garden and the blossoms will provide a stunning display for you every Spring. Varieties include Cornus kousa var. chinensis bearing white flowers, Cornus florida var. rubra bearing reddish-magenta flowers, Cornus kousa var. chinensis ‘Satomi’ bearing soft rose pink flowers and Cornus kousa x C. florida ‘Stellar Pink’.

Mayor’s Christmas Appeal Christmas is a time of giving and Council is inviting all local businesses, community groups and residents to donate gifts to the 2016 Mayor’s Christmas Appeal for our senior residents. “This is a wonderful program and I’m very happy to be inviting the community to contribute by donating a small gift for one of our nursing home residents” said Lithgow City Mayor Councilor Stephen Lesslie. “The appeal was developed to show appreciation to the residents of our aged care facilities for their contributions to the community” stated Mayor Lesslie. “These people have given so much to their friends, families and the broader communities throughout their lives” “Many of our nursing home residents are without local family and Christmas can be a lonely and isolated time” continued the Mayor. “So, let’s give back to those who have given so much and make everyone’s Christmas, a merry Christmas”. “Hand crafted gifts, gifts that provide visual and sensory stimulus suitable for Alzheimer’s patients, non-allergenic personal care products or soft lollies and chocolates are welcomed by the residents”. “Wrapped gifts with a male or female tag can be dropped off at Council’s Administration Building or any one of Council’s libraries by Friday 11 November” Continued the Mayor “and they will be distributed to residents at functions held at local nursing homes in early December”. For further information on the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, phone Council’s Administration Office on 6354 9999 or go to Council’s website http://council.lithgow.com/christmas-appeal

COMMUNITY Do you really want to be drinking that ? By Dr. Kylie Arnot

Lithgow Skulls 16

Its habit, you stop to get fuel at the petrol station and grab yourself an Energy drink on the way to the register to help you through the day. Or a piece of pizza doesn’t feel right until its washed down with a can of soft drink But have you ever really thought about what your drinking? In a 600ml bottle of any type of soft drink, there is 16 – 20 teaspoons of sugar. That’s nearly half a cup of sugar. Energy drinks have 7 teaspoons. And if you think you’re being healthy having a sports drink after a soccer/hockey match then think again, that’s 7 teaspoons of sugar per bottle. Now, it’s widely known that regular consumption of sugary beverages is not good for you, but even the occasional indulgence can have negative effects on your oral health. When you have one of these drinks, the sugar latches on to your teeth. Bacteria that are normally found inside your mouth eat away at the sugar these drinks leave behind. However, as the bacteria consumes the sugar, it begins to produce acid. Eventually, the acid begins to eat away some of the white part of the tooth (the enamel) on your teeth. This makes the teeth thinner and weaker. As the enamel weakens, the likelihood of developing cavities becomes greater. Not only is there a high sugar content in these drinks, but soft drinks (regular and ‘diet’), sports drinks, energy drinks, fruit juices and cordials also have high acid levels that can cause tooth erosion. Tooth erosion occurs when acid attacks the teeth to dissolve the outer surface of tooth enamel. Regular loss of your enamel can lead to cavities and exposure of the inner layer of the tooth that may become sensitive and painful. Each acid attack lasts for around 20 minutes. Every time you take a sip of the drink, the acid damage begins all over again. So imagine, the acid in the drinks soften the enamel and then the bacteria eats’ the sugar in the drinks and produces more acid. It is understandable why sugary drinks are known as one of the most common dietary causes of tooth decay. Unfortunately, children and teenagers are most susceptible to tooth decay because their tooth enamel is not fully developed. The best way to minimize the tooth decay that is caused by consuming sugar drinks is to avoid them whenever possible. Consider other, healthier, options to quench your thirst, such as water or milk. Natural fruit juices are another way to provide a bit of sweetness in a healthy way, but these are to be consumed in moderation. However, if you have a penchant for a soft drink with your pizza, there are a few things you can do to minimize the adverse outcome. Drink these drinks in moderation. Use a straw so your teeth are less exposed to the sugar and acid in the drink. Take a drink of water, preferably fluoridated tap water, after a sugary or acidic drink to help rinse out your mouth and dilute the sugars. Do not sip a sugary or acidic drink slowly or over a long duration. This exposes your teeth to sugar attacks for longer. Finally, never drink sugary or acidic drinks before you go to bed. If you do the liquid pools around your teeth coating your teeth with sugar and acid while you sleep. Moral of the story, drink water instead. It has no acid, no sugar, and no kilojoules.

Celebrate the onset of sultry summer evenings, dusky sunsets over breathtaking views and mouthwatering regional fare to the sublime strains of The Metropolitan Orchestra (TMO) when the Hydro Majestic Hotel hosts its final Majestic Concert for 2016. A 55-piece showcase will include a program of Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Overture, Kats-Chernin’s Ornamental Air (for Basset Clarinet and Orchestra) and Andrew Doyle displaying the exceptional range of the clarinet in the virtuosic, lyrical Symphony No 7 by Beethoven. The concert program will be accompanied by a lavish cocktail and dining package. Escarpment Group general manager Ralf Bruegger said: ``We’ve had two Majestic Concerts and some of the biggest stars of the modern opera stage perform at the Hydro this year, so I’d say the grand traditions of culture and elegance that the Hydro Majestic is renown have well and truly been revived at the original Blue Mountains party palace. ``The music, the dining, the view and the magnificent heritage building itself combine to create unforgettable occasions.’’ Under the baton of founding artistic director and chief conductor Sarah-Grace Williams, TMO comprises Sydney’s most dynamic musicians and is recognised as one of the country’s most versatile orchestras delivering accessible and vibrant concert experiences. The orchestra’s seven-year history features a starstudded array of highlight concert and/or album performances with the likes of Sumi Jo, David Helfgott,

Futsal State Championships

Dr Derek N. Allan BDS Hons (Syd), DCD Orth (Melb), MOrth RCS (Edin), Specialist Orthodontist

On the weekend of 8th & 9th October , 25 players from the local and surrounding areas travelled to Penrith to compete in the Futsal State Championships. By Carleen Chapman All teams had 4 games with 2 games Saturday and 2 on Sunday all our teams played against Premier and State League Futsal Teams in the draws. The Under 12’s had a nice early start with their first game being 9am and the U14’s were lucky to have a later start in the day with their first game being 1.30, all teams had a nice early start on the Sunday starting from 8am. In our first games across all teams it took a little while for our boys to start playing their way and together as a team, although our guys didn’t win any of their games, they all put in a fantastic effort throughout all games and with some good teamwork scored some goals. You could see the changes in the boys play getting stronger with each game they played, they never gave up and continued to show determination and great spirit. They should be very proud of themselves and how they represented Wallerawang Futsal and the businesses who sponsored the teams, all the boys showed great sportsmanship. The competition they played was a good learning curve and a bit of an eye opener for some of the players on how fast the game can be.

We would like to thank Paul Chapman, Bryce Chapman, Brad Ringin. Michelle Ringin and Sharon Giles for their help in either coaching or managing the teams. Would also like to say a huge thank you to the local businesses who sponsored the teams, they are BRD Automotive, GB Constructions, Guardian Pharmacy Wallerawang & Portland, Wallerawang Landscaping, Inner Peace and Hartley & Oberon Veterinary Clinic. Also Nathan from Hallmark who worked with us to come up with a fantastic looking design for the playing kit and bag for the kids. All the kids loved the gear and the parents were impressed on how good the kids looked wearing them. The 4 teams, U12 Rockets sponsored by BRD Automotive the players were Oliver Ellis, Harrison Wells, Connor Fitzpatrick, Jorden Berry, Rene Staines, Connor Goodman & Brock Ringin. U12 Rebels sponsored by GB Constructions players were Ashton Hunter, Aaron Swift, Tate Want, Riley Bell, Hayden Berry and Mitchell Jennings. U14 Warriors sponsored by Guardian Pharmacy Wallerawang & Portland, Wallerawang Landscaping players were Memhet Yilmaz, Cooper Giles, Ethan Kemp, Reece Preston, Eamyn Quinn & Jaydn Smith. U14 Warhawks sponsored by Inner Peace, Hartley & Oberon Veterinary Clinic players were Joshua Best, Jessie Ringin, Cameron Constable, Ryan Bird, Rye Gibbs-Minner & Louis Johnman.

Wallerawang Futsal will be starting up the local Junior Futsal Competition on Friday 21st , ages U6 to U14/15, age groups running are subject to having enough players. For further information contact Carleen Chapman on 0402205070
