Whilst not entirely unexpected the Arctic front that caused the cold snap over the last week has certainly let us know we are in the deep of the season. The snow may not have fallen quite as heavily as predicted in much of the region, there was certainly enough for some Sydneysiders to make the trip up and over the hill to have a play in the powder. The icy winter conditions have continued through this week, with more snow predicted from today through the weekend. Time to head inside and spend some quality time with the family.

We’re here for you 2

Quiet a short note from me this week, for a number of reasons. The main one however is we receive the email to the right from a reader, and although I didn’t want to publish any more in regards to the fanmail we received a couple of weeks ago, I think that it is a nice final word and sums up the feelings of myself and the vast majority of our readers. Thank you Sharon, for taking the time to put your thoughts down. Hopefully straight thinking people are the majority in this region and we can get on with what is important rather than casting blame at others for their percieved transgressions. I had planned to be playing Mr Mum this weekend as Kellie went away for her annual Girl’s Weekend, however she has been struck down with the flu. It may put a slight dent in my plan of “dad is in charge - Let’s party” however with the weather predicted for the weekend, maybe a few movie marathons, some slightly questionable food choices and a good dose of family time is just what the doctor ordered. Have a good one, Rich Evans

Your Say Quest for the elusive fleece I really do feel the cold, and only woollen clothing keeps me seriously warm. Yet here in the Lithgow region, in the middle of a bitterly cold winter, everyday pure wool apparel (for adults) is hard to find. Sometimes I'm lured into shops by the soft 'wool' garments on display, only to find they're all synthetic, with little or no wool content. And that's one of my pet frustrations - textile product description - particularly as concerns the word 'wool'. It irks me to find what I assume to be the ideal wool jumper, only to discover from the label that it is, in fact, 100% viscose. You often see words like 'warm soft wool' on the label of a garment, when the actual wool content is a mere 5%. It appears there are no set rules governing the percentage of real wool - actual wool from an actual sheep - an item must contain before it can be described as 'wool'. I believe the word 'wool' should refer only to sheep's wool, and a garment should not be described as 'wool' unless its sheep's wool content is more than 50%. A garment having a sheep's wool content of between 10% and 50% should be restricted to 'wool mix', and clothing with less than 10% sheep's wool content should not have the word 'wool' in the product description at all. The same rules should apply to online retailing, where textile mislabelling is widespread, and determining the actual wool content of clothing can be frustratingly time-consuming. So, it seems that unless I pay a top-end price for a pure wool sweater from a designer clothing shop, I'm mainly restricted to poking around the op shops in search of a respectable 'pre-loved' wool jumper, or perusing village market craft stalls in the hope of finding a 'home-knit' that fits. It's not only exasperating, it's also disappointing in a country once world-renowned for 'riding on the sheep's back'. Unless, of course, there's a local retail outlet I'm not aware of? The Magpie Whisperer

Hi Rich I've pondered over writing this email as I don't often respond to articles or shows that I don't agree with, finding it a challenge to put the right words down that convey my thoughts in the proper way and I'm always so very unsure about correct letter structure/ punctuation. However after reading the article from your last edition from "a long term business/ratepayer" I haven't been able to get past it and it keeps coming back to mind how completely unfair/unjustified I thought this letter was. I will perhaps just follow this persons letter and let you know my thoughts (and I'm sure I'm not alone). The first dig about the paper delivery, I believe the mammoth job of getting the paper out to every household would be near impossible and on the occasions it hasn't made it to my house I have picked it up from your one of your drop off points, no big deal. I've never seen it thrown from a car window but so what if it was, this brings a smile to my face just thinking about it as it takes me back quite some years to how the paper was delivered to my family home and if I'm not mistaken still is to those households who choose home delivery? Why are YOU not out there getting the stories? from what I read YOU are out there but YOU are only one person and can only be in one place at a time, maybe when cloning is made possible you might be able to please this person? Then again probably not :/:/ Plagiarism, I'm not exactly sure about this one? I've never noticed a direct copy of a story from the Mercury but then again I don't always read the Mercury. All the adds from all those business people? pay back/favouritism or well spent money? I would think it was good business, is that not what it's all about? like minded people with a common goal getting together helping each other for the better of all? Which is pretty much what you have said in your reply. The meetings I wouldn't know about but would think that part of the reason people attend is to of course get the most out of it that they possibly can, for themselves, their business which inturn means for the community. The rest of the dribble I won't address because I believe it to be just that. I would think that perhaps this business person has not been involved in any of your meetings and therein lies their problem. Maybe they are waiting for that personal invitation which you have now given but will never know if it is taken up as I don't believe they would ever have the guts to own the trash they choose to call constructive criticism. They probably believe it would be a privilege for your group to have them when most just feel privileged to be a part of a group. Like the old saying you have quoted before and I can't really remember it but it's something about you can please most of the people most of the time but some of the people never. I'd be thinking they where one of the latter. To finish I'd just like to say you keep on keeping on, which no doubt you will, and I love your work. Cheers Sharon

Lithgow community crowns Lithgow local on The Voice its local Health Hero

Lithgow resident Paul Crowder finally got his TV moment on Monday night’s The Voice. By Rich Evans

Pictured is Chris Brown, Westfund’s Lisa Mooney and Brett Croucher

Westfund Health is excited to announce that Lithgow resident, Brett Croucher has been crowned the winner of the inaugural Westfund Health Hero awards, an initiative that recognises individuals who are making a difference to the wellbeing of their local communities. Winner Brett Croucher was nominated for his expertise and work in educating the local Lithgow community on life-saving first aid skills. He continues to offer first-aid courses to seniors, children and childcare workers, with all proceeds from these sessions going towards the local hospital. The Westfund Heath Hero initiative, which ran from April to May of this year, encouraged Lithgow and other regional NSW and QLD communities to nominate and vote for individuals who deserved recognition for the outstanding difference they have made to the wellbeing and health of each community. As the winning local Health Hero, Brett Croucher received a medallion, certificate and $1,000 for his chosen community organisation, The Wallerawang Kids Club.

In a close second, runner-up Chris Brown is also being recognised for his amazing effort towards the health of the Lithgow community. Chris received a medallion, certificate and $250 to be donated to Wallerawang Junior Rugby League Club. Lisa Mooney, Westfund Regional Manager for Lithgow, says that Westfund was blown away by the positive response and amount of nominations. “All of the nominations we received were outstanding and inspiring. They exhibited exceptional leadership and dedication to the Lithgow community,” said Ms Mooney. “The Health Hero awards were aimed at recognising the amazing work of individual Australians, not necessarily healthcare professionals. Each nominee, especially Mr Croucher and Mr Brown especially, were seen making a real, tangible difference in the community.” Brett Croucher and Chris Brown were awarded their medallions at an awards presentation held on Wednesday 15 July at Westfund’s Lithgow branch.

Paul didn’t get the all important turnaround from the judges, and feels like he could have done better. “The nerves got to me, if I had sung my best and they hadn’t turned then that’s the way it is, but I just feel I could have done better,” said Paul, reliving his moment again. The footage was filmed quite some time ago and the process began back in October for Paul when he sent in his original audition. “it’s quite a process to go through, it starts with a video, then if you get through that stage, you head down and do some live auditions,” said Paul. Even though, listening to some of the other contestants through sound check, he felt a little out of his depth, one of the producers reminded him that he would not have gotten this far if he didn’t have the talent. As a performer, Paul has played in bands 15 years ago, but has only recently reignited the passion to get up and sing in front of audiences. “Music has been part of my life as far back as I can remember. My Uncle, brother and sister are all singers and entertainers back in my home town of Junee,” he said. Paul moved to Lithgow as a teenager to take up an Apprenticeship at Wallerawang power station, continuing to work in that industry today at Mount Piper. The motivation to take his shot came from seeing other people in concert and realising that was what he really wanted to do. The Voice seemed like a great way to take that shot. Despite feeling that he could have done better and the inevitable disappointment, Paul has not let this experience dampen his spirits at all and is straight back on the horse with a gig at Lithgow Workies this Saturday night, then he will be heading to his home town of Junee to play at the end of the month.

Full steam ahead at Eskbank House

By Miriam Bowie Johnson The Eskbank Steampunk High Tea on the 11th made good use of the short burst of reasonable weather in the afternoon. Taking the chance to dress up like all good Steampunk enthusiasts we flocked to Eskbank House for High Tea, croquet on the lawn, a range of historical displays and stalls. With a professional photo included in the price of the ticket, people had obviously gone to a lot of effort. The costumes that we saw walking around (and wore ourselves) were imaginative and detailed in the extreme. For those of you who are, perhaps, a little unsure what Steampunk is and have only vague thoughts of corsets and top hats, it is essentially Victorian Science Fiction...or the aesthetic of Victorian Science Fiction. My personal favourite description is of it as an attempt to realise an alternate history in which the culture of the Victorian era persisted and technology remained steampowered as it advanced. The High Tea by the Vale ladies was a wonderful spread of savoury and sweet, and the fine, albeit cold, weather was enjoyed while eating on the lawn. A short shower was mostly ignored. One of the highlights of the day was the Tea Dueling,

held after the High Tea. It lived up to all possible expectations and wild day dreams. As I discovered on the day, the duel is a matter of dunking a biscuit in tea for several seconds and getting it to your mouth without loosing any of the biscuit. There is perhaps more to it than that but I’m fairly sure that covers the bare bones. It is perhaps one of the funniest things I have ever seen and I immediately wanted to have a go. Tragically, I will have to wait for next time. After Tea Dueling there was Croquet. A few of us drew quite a crowd as we desperately tried to aim for the hoops on uneven ground. There were moments when we had to stop the balls rolling down the hill. It was incredible fun, though I don’t recommend playing in a skirt. It kept getting in the way. There were stalls of Steampunk accessories - I now sport a wonderful pair of goggles courtesy of Skav’s Steampunk Workshop - and plenty of others to talk to. Lithgow’s Living History offered a wonderful insight into the past, putting the military paraphernalia into context. A collection of Penny-Farthing’s caught our attention as a gentleman in a top hat and tails rode by and the vintage cars made excellent props for photographers. I’m very much looking forward to next year’s Eskbank Steampunk!

Regional Roundtable to progress Central NSW priorities New Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW visits region Sarah Mitchell MLC, recently appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Regional and Rural Health and Western NSW, met with Central NSW Council representatives in Orange yesterday to discuss the potential for a “Regional Roundtable” in September of State Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries, local members, Regional Development Australia and Central NSW Councils. Ms Mitchell was joined at the meeting by fellow Parliamentary Secretary for the Deputy Premier and Regional Roads, and State Member for Orange, Andrew Gee, the Deputy Chair of Centroc and Bathurst Mayor, Cr Gary Rush and Mayor of Orange, Cr John Davis. “Following the election in March, a number of changes were made by the State Government to Ministerial portfolios and new Parliamentary Secretary roles were introduced, including the Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW,” said Centroc Deputy Chair Cr Gary Rush. “Our proposal is to get all the key people in a room together to co-ordinate alignment of priorities and projects.” Ms Mitchell and Mr Gee indicated their support of the Regional Roundtable. Key issues proposed for discussion at the Round Table include decentralisation, the Regional Growth Plan, infrastructure, agriculture and Free Trade opportunities. “We are in the fortunate position of having a number of regionally based representatives in State Parliament now with the word ‘regional’ in their titles,” said Cr Rush. “It makes sense to leverage that regional base and ensure we are all working together.” “We were impressed and encouraged by how supportive Ms Mitchell is,” said Cr Rush. “She is keen to take a key role in the Regional Roundtable in her capacity as Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW.”

Motoring history revived

Drive safely in bad weather With the weather predicted for the region over the coming weeks, here are some timely reminders from Sergeant Glen Crawford from Traffic and Highway Patrol Command in Lithgow.

• ‘Black ice’ refers to a smooth layer of frozen condensation on the road surface which is transparent and almost impossible to see.

• Black ice can remain in shaded or low-lying areas even on fine days. Bridges are also high risk locations with cold air circulating beneath and above the road surface.

• Motorists should be aware these conditions are usually worst between 11pm and 11am, although they can occur at any time

• The central west area has a high probability in the next month of Snow and Ice Conditions

• Motorist should adjust their driving to the conditions of the road, slow down, reduce speed, increase distance between vehicles and activate headlights

• Monitor conditions through local radio stations and RMS Live Traffic

• Delay no essential travel when conditions deteriorate

• Be prepared for road closures and carry the appropriate clothing when travelling

Story & photo by Les Taylor A large part of Grenfell’s motoring history has made it to Portland to be used in a new role. A ten thousand litre underground storage tank from the now defunct Ford dealership in Grenfell was recently excavated by Best Western Petroleum Services of Kobe Street in Bathurst to make way for a brand new medical centre. Company Director Kevin Brennan heard of Lithgow District Car Club’s efforts to acquire a steel storage tank to comply with Rural Fire Services emergency firefighting regulations at their Yvonne Martyn Memorial Motorsport Park at Mt Piper. The car club’s Jim Morgan liaised with Mr Brennan

on the tank’s extrication and it was loaded by crane and transported to the Motorsport Park ready for installation. History will live on as the massive tank will be cleaned and painted before being lifted into it’s final resting place to provide a valued service for emergency services. The Grenfell Motors building was originally constructed in 1924 and the vintage tank would have been storage for Shell or Plume fuels which were sold on the street front site. Many thanks go to Best Western Petroleum Services and Kevin Brennan for his generosity in donating the tank to Lithgow District Car Club.

3 Tips for New Business Owners By Ben Fewrell ActionCOACH

,

If you’re starting a brand new business, it can be overwhelming. You’re probably wondering what you should be doing first or maybe what you shouldn’t do, where you should spend your money. There are a lot of questions going through your mind. I’m going to give you three tips that’ll just help you really drive towards a successful point with your new business. My first tip is to act like a new business. I see people start new business and they set up flash offices, buy new cars, new computers; they really go overboard on expenditures. Really, the more money you have in reserve, the better. Because you just don’t know what’s going to happen. You don’t know what’s going to work yet. Your marketing’s not proven, your sales techniques aren’t proven. You haven’t proven the concept yet. So until you’re at a point where you’re predictably bringing in cash flow from your sales, act like a start-up, act like a small business. Don’t act like the big boys. Don’t worry about what your competitors are doing. Don’t worry what the guys down the road are driving. Just act like a new business, and you’ll be better off. My second tip is stay focused. Really stay focused on what is going to bring in the cash. Don’t do the things that aren’t going to bring in sales. Don’t worry right now if your office is a bit shabby. If painting it’s not going to bring in more sales, don’t paint it. Focus on marketing. Focus on sales techniques. Delivery is important of course, you have got to keep your customers happy. But I see far too much emphasis put on delivery. There’s a famous saying that I love: ‘The best mouse trap does not always sell the most.’ You can probably think of a hamburger shop that sells a lot of hamburgers, but they don’t make the best one. I won’t say which one, but I’m sure you’ve been there. So it’s not about having the best product, it’s about having the best sales and marketing. Of course customer service is important, but right now, focus on what’s going to bring in the sales. Now my third tip is to delegate or outsource tasks. Now a saying that I love, it’s one of my mantras now: ‘Do what you do best, and outsource the rest.’ Don’t feel like you’ve got to do everything. Don’t be the Photoshop guru. Don’t be the cleaner. Don’t be the mail house person. Don’t run to the bank. Hire casual staff whether it’s online and you can outsource overseas or it’s local, it doesn’t matter. But get yourself some support. Now whilst that may be a small investment, it frees you up to do the things that are going to make your money, that’s a much better use of your time. So you don’t get to the end of your week and go, ‘Where did all the time go?’ when you could just focus on activities that bring sales in the door. And hire people on a casual

basis to do the things that aren’t as important but still need to be done. So there you go. Those are my top three tips if you’re just starting out in a new business. Thanks for reading and have a profitable day! Ben Fewtrell is CEO of ActionCOACH Australia where he and his team have helped thousands of small business owners realise their potential – making more profit while spending less time working.

By Catriona Swan, Fitzgerald Swan Real Estate A recurring question from those keen to cash in on the current housing boom, is about subdivision and the potential to profit from larger blocks of land in a housing market short on stock and high on demand. Whether you’re considering purchasing property or are keen to subdivide land you already own, it’s essential to understand the impact zoning may have on your plans. In short, zoning refers to the legally permitted and prohibited uses of a block of land, thus determining whether a block can be used for residential, commercial, industrial or agricultural purposes as well as the density of any proposed development. The principal planning instrument for zoning decisions is the local environment Plan (LEP) and the 2014 Lithgow LEP allows for growth in all development types in both existing areas as well as new greenfield sites in the region. Currently the minimum lot size required for multi dwelling housing in Lithgow is 600 metres although this varies depending on the zoning of the block. Local councils apply zoning regulations in order

to control the pace and pattern of development and growth that occurs within their municipal district. Zoning also helps to assure local property owners and residents that the historical, architectural and environmental characteristics of their surrounds will remain intact. Considerations for the suitability for sub division (which increases density) include the adequacy of drainage and storm sewers, public streets, pedestrian walkways and environmental constraints such as steep slopes, significant vegetation, waterways and bushfire risks. Zoning also determines what can and cannot be built on a lot. Restrictions can apply to the type of building, the road frontage of each lot, the size and height of the building, the size of front, rear and side yards, the number of rooms and the distance of the building from boundary lines. In regional areas such as Lithgow developers often have their sights on large tracts of rural land for new housing precincts. Lithgow Council has been aware for some time of this demand for rural/residential development and has rezoned land to allow two hectare subdivisions, subject to development requirements to ensure minimal disruption to the rural environment.

In fact Marrangaroo is proposed to provide 310 hectares of land for a new residential precinct supported by neighbourhood business and recreational areas. A great alternative to subdivision is the addition of a granny flat on a larger block with an existing dwelling. In an attempt to support affordable housing the NSW government allows one granny flat on a lot with at least 452 square metres of land as long as various building and environmental standards are met. With sensible and controlled planning by local governments, development can be beneficial to the economic growth of an area, bringing population, employment and opportunity. For the savvy investor or property owner, a thorough understanding of local zoning can maximise the potential value of land holdings through subdivision or development.

Rebooting a much loved franchise is never easy, but Man of Steel does an admirable job of updating the origin story for Superman. With a darker, grittier feel, Man of Steel is a more serious take on Superman’s mythology. Clark Kent, instead of being the wholesome farmboy from Smallville, is now a loner, living on the fringe of society… something that makes his journey toward becoming a hero to save those he loves even more emotionally uplifting. Man of Steel is not perfect. Its violence has been cited by some as being hard to watch, and I’d agree, but it’s failings ultimately don’t take away from how enjoyable it is to watch. If you’re a fan of superheroes (or you’ve ever had a soft spot for Superman) then Man of Steel is one to watch.

New beginning for iconic local business

PORTLAND

PRODUCE For all your Agricultural and Farm Supplies

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

It was the end of an era recently when Julie McLachlan handed over the keys of Portland Produce to new owners Chris and Tam Brown. By Rich Evans As the story goes, Brad, Julie’s late husband, a grain truck driver carting from out west, used the silos at Portland as grain storage before proceeding to cart the grain further to the Sydney area. The idea of a Produce Store was born and has continued to expand ever since. Set on the high side of the Cement works with its large sign, it is a familiar sight to locals and those who have passed through Portland. Chris and Tam who grew up and have always lived in the area saw it as a great opportunity to secure their

Pictured: James Walton, Tam and Chris Brown

own futures in the town they love. Chris has been involved in coal mining his entire career and Tam has worked for a local electricity company, and with the constant concern regarding jobs in those two industries the couple decided the time was right to make a change and go into business for themselves. They are not without some connection to the business however as Chris’s aunty has previously worked at the store for around 20 years. Julie is currently enjoying a welcome break in Queensland where the temperatures are slightly more inviting. Those that know the store are aware of their huge range of produce, and for those that have never visited perhaps now is a good time to drop in and say hello. The Bowyer and Livermore Portland & First National Bowyer & Livermore Oberon teams would like to extend our best wishes to the new owners Chris & Tammy Brown of Portland Produce. On behalf of the team and the community we would like to extend our best wishes to Julie with her future endeavours and retirement!

Does advertising work?

We recently ran some ads for a new business. He wasn’t sure that newspaper advertising would work, but was prepared to give it a go. As a new business, he made a moderate investment and gave it a month. At the end of that first month’s advertising he had a 50% increase in sales, off the back of a total investment of $616. He well and truly got his money back. Our ads start at just $35 a week... why wouldn’t you give it a go? Call us on 6355 4258.

The Pay It Forward Page

A little bit of gratitude goes a very long way Some businesses start with the simplest things. By Rich Evans For local home based business woman, Kerry Griffiths, it was a simple act of giving a small hand drawn note to a waiter in Venice that got her started. Kerry was enjoying her dream holiday in Europe with her family when the language barrier at a restaurant gave her the idea of leaving a note for the waiter who had made their evening so memorable. Catching his reaction from the door as they left, she realised that simple gesture crossed the language divide and let him know how much he was appreciated. “I think most of want to say thank you but sometimes we don’t know how, and then just forget,” said Kerry. After a long career in education she has now focussed her time on this new venture, Gratitude Cards. “The simple act of saying thank you is sometimes all that I needed to brighten someone’s day, and by passing on one of my cards, it’s a simple way to do for those that don’t know how,” she said. The cards are small business card size, so easy to fit into a purse or wallet. They are illustrated with Kerry’s original artwork and have a small space to write a message on the back. There are also options for people to have customised

cards created with their own personal message. Kerry believes that having an attitude of gratitude is a great way to bring more of what you want into the world and we agree.

For more information on Kerry’s cards email her on withgratitude@kerrygriffiths.com

Let’s all start paying it forward. By Rich Evans A couple of months ago, we decided to clear out our garage one weekend. As we were pulling things out that we no longer had a need for, we came up with the crazy idea... to just give our stuff away. We put it up on Facebook, and we thought we would manage to get rid of a few things - but whatever was left we would take to Vinnies. By 4pm we had not a thing left, and we had helped people who had a real need. A expectant mother that had just moved and needed almost everything to setup a house got a kitchen’s worth of cups, plates, cutlery and other kitchen odds and sods. Families came and got clothes for their kids. We gave away a cot that we no longer needed. We gave away a bike. It was a great afternoon and our whole family

participated and got value out of paying it forward to someone else. Since then I have been trying to come up with a way to bring this concept to life in the paper. This week we launch our pay it forward page. The concept is simple. If you have something you want to give away for free, then we will put it in the paper - free of charge. What have you got lying around that may be of use or value to someone else?

We’ll help you find a new home for things you don’t want. Email us at editor@villagevoice.net.au

Go and grab it, take a photo and send us the details via email to editor@villagevoice.net. au and we will get it into the next publication for you. Please keep the description to around 25 words, and make sure you add your contact details.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

Local Aboriginal artists encouraged to apply for government fellowhip Member for Bathurst Paul Toole is encouraging local Aboriginal artists to apply for the 2015 NSW Government Aboriginal Arts Fellowship. Mr Toole said the $30,000 fellowship will support an Aboriginal artist to showcase their work and expand their skills. “This fellowship is a terrific opportunity for an Aboriginal artist to undertake professional development. The fellowship will allow the recipient to undertake a self-directed program of professional development that could include travel, mentorships, residences, workshops, research and creation of new work.” “It is available to Aboriginal artists in all art forms including collections and cultural heritage, community arts and cultural development, dance, literature, multi-art form, music, theatre and visual arts,” Mr Toole said. Acting Premier and Minister for the Arts Troy Grant said the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government is committed to supporting Aboriginal artists who contribute to the social and cultural richness of our State and produce works combining traditional stories with art. “The fellowship program will unearth the quality of our Aboriginal arts and cultural sector and provide an artist with an opportunity to broaden their skill set,” Mr Grant said. Applications for the fellowship close on Monday 10 August. 2015 marks the first year of a visiting artist in residency relationship between Omega Ensemble and the Mitchell Conservatorium. Established in 2005, Omega Ensemble has positioned itself as a formidable force in Australian chamber music, with a dedication to engage the finest Australian musicians, as well as international guest artists for performances in an intimate and stimulating chamber setting. In addition, the Ensemble is committed to present some of history’s most beautiful and treasured chamber works, alongside new commissions, rarities and unique settings of the most demanding repertoire. To date the Ensemble has premiered over 24 new Australian works. In 2015 Omega continue their second year as Ensemble in Residence at City Recital Hall in angel Place Sydney, one of the finest concert venues in Australia. Their residency program has allowed Omega to expand its repertoire to larger and more challenging works and after a successful tour to the central west last year MitCon invited the Ensemble to extend its inresidence reach with the Mitchell Conservatorium. Through this program, local student musicians have access to masterclasses as well as live concerts, which are an integral part of their MitCon study. This month the Omega Ensemble are touring with New York-based Australian soprano Jane Sheldon, who has been praised by the New York Times for singing “sublimely” and described as “superb, with a voice of penetrating beauty, precision and variegated colours” (Sydney Morning Herald).

Their concert is on Thursday 23 July 7.30pm Mitchell Conservatorium, 2 Wylde Street Lithgow.

Take a dip to Grant put to good use warm up this winter By Irene Bowie Johnson Going for a swim is not something you think of doing in winter; especially not when the weatherman is predicting snow. However, swimming is exactly what I did last Monday morning. Getting up early the morning, to put on swimmers while there was still snow on the ground, felt strange, but I'd promised myself I'd go for a swim and I was determined to see it through. Thankfully I did. The new pool has thoroughly exceeded my expectations. Not only is it a clean, friendly environment, it is also beautifully warm - even at 6 in the morning! - something that came as a very pleasant surprise. The water was warm and very comfortable at 28 degrees. It was definitely warm enough to swim while it snows outside, and the floor of the indoor centre also helped to keep the chill at bay. Complete with hot water showers to rinse off afterwards, going on a swim at the Aquatic Centre turned out to be the perfect start to my day. I'll be swimming there more often, and I'd recommend it to anyone who's been hesitant to try it thus far. I look forward to seeing you there! Located on George Coates Avenue there is easy access parking available and the centre itself is designed for easy entry. Open on weekends from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm on workdays there is ample time for a quick dip before or after work. With a range of Aqua Aerobics classes available throughout the week and a new Swim School starting on the 13th of July there is plenty to keep everyone entertained and safe in the water. Fees and Charges: Child under 5 years - Free Child (5 - 16 years) - $3.50 Adult - $5.50 Concession - $3.50 Senior - Free For further information please call: (02) 6350 3200

Last year, the Lithgow Croquet Club responded to an advertisement by Centennial Coal in the Village Voice. The advert called for submissions to the Sporting Sponsorship Program 2014/2015, offering assistance to sporting organisations within the local area. The Lithgow Croquet Club proposed the use of sponsorship funds for a new sign for the clubhouse. The request was for a modest amount, but the sign would form an important part of a series of promotional efforts to raise the profile of the club in the local area, encouraging more people to discover the benefits and enjoyment that croquet offers. Logan Signs also deserve a mention as sponsors, as they provided the new high quality sign at a very reasonable price. In the last 12 months the club has been part of events at Eskbank House, including the Roaring 20s Garden Party and recent Steampunk Festival; playing croquet at Ironfest, where people could try the game for free; and hosting an event for Seniors Week. As a result of these activities membership has risen from 10 regular players to 30 regular players in just 12 months, with regular players coming from as far away as Portland and Blackheath. This increase of

membership has resulted in reduced membership fees for this coming year. As a valuable part of the process, the sponsorship provided by Centennial Coal has helped to deliver long term benefits to the club, reaching far beyond the initial sponsorship contribution. Croquet is a great sport for the whole family, and is easy to learn. It is a game of skill and tactics, and is also a great social outing. The clubhouse has great facilities, including disabled access. Anyone is welcome to come and join the fun on the regular playing days, Wednesday at 10:30am or Saturday from 11am or 1pm. For only $5 people can come along and try the game. Equipment, coaching and morning/afternoon tea is provided. The Lithgow Croquet Club is located between the Hockey Fields and Tennis Courts (corner James and Young St) in Lithgow.

Find out more at www.lithgowcroquetclub. info or on our facebook page (www.facebook. com/lithgowcroquetclub) or contact Cindy Houston (Vice President) on 0409 594 978.

Diabetes: are you at risk

From Roy Budaraju Approximately 3.2 million Australians have diabetes or pre-diabetes while worldwide 366 million people are affected. National Diabetes Week runs from July 12 to 18 and everyone is encouraged to have checks and learn more about this disease. Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when there is too much glucose in the blood. This happens if the body is not producing insulin or not using insulin properly. Insulin is required to enable glucose to enter the body’s cells and be converted to energy. Glucose is a particular type of sugar – it is needed to provide energy for the body. Insulin is the hormone or chemical messenger that controls how the muscles, liver and fat tissues use glucose. There are a number of different types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce insulin. This type represents 10–15%of all cases of diabetes and is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases in developed nations. Type 1 diabetes is not caused by lifestyle factors, yet its incidence is increasing at a rate of about 3% a year. Most people with diabetes, around 85%, have type 2 diabetes. They still produce insulin but it does not work as well. It usually affects mature adults, but younger people, even children, are now getting type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is more common in people who have low levels of physical activity or are overweight or obese, but it also occurs in people who have a family history of it. Less well known is gestational diabetes – a form of diabetes that occurs in pregnancy and mostly disappears after the birth. This type may be caused by the woman’s body not being able to make enough insulin or not being able to use it correctly during pregnancy. It is usually found by having a blood test between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy.

Pre-diabetes is a condition where blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Left untreated it may develop into type 2 diabetes within 5 to 10 years. A balanced diet and regular physical activity are key elements of preventing and managing diabetes. Being overweight or obese increases the chance of getting diabetes. While the underlying causes of obesity are complex, the resulting problems are well known; type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) disease, osteoarthritis and sleep apnoea are some of these problems. It is important to take a balanced view with regard to nutrition, drawing on a range of foods rather than focusing on single nutrients as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. No single food is responsible for weight gain or loss, but our total kilojoule (or calorie) intake from all food is what can cause problems. During National Diabetes Week visit your local pharmacy to learn more about diabetes and how it can be managed. If you have any of the risk factors for diabetes such as excess weight or smoking, now is the perfect time to ask your pharmacist about lifestyle changes. Pharmacies can offer a range of resources and support for diabetes including: • diabetes screening tests with referrals to your doctor • diabetes management services including monitoring of blood glucose levels, weight and diabetes medicines • advice on diabetes medicines • review of diabetes medicines • weight management services • blood glucose monitoring devices • supply of blood glucose test strips as part of the National Diabetes Services Scheme • quit smoking products and services

Treatments include braces, Invisalign, ceramic braces, lingual braces, plates and appliances.
