Springvale extension a step closer to approval prevention is .......

better than cure

27 Railway Parade, Lithgow

www.waratahdental.com.au By Rich Evans The preliminary determination on the Springvale extension was handed down by the Planning Assessment Commission on Tuesday and it held some hopeful news for the local coal industry After the large crowd showing at the May public hearing meeting, the local coal community has been holding its breathe to see what the determination of the PAC would be in their response to the Minister. There has been a great deal of interest in the proposal from beyond Lithgow as concerns were raised in regards to the mine’s impact on the region’s water resources that eventually flow into the Sydney Catchment. The report states, “The Commission has carefully weighed the key areas of concern, including discharge impacts on the region’s water resources and swamp

impacts, against the significance of the resource and the socio-economic benefits. The Commission is satisfied that the project’s benefits as currently understood outweigh its potential impacts, and on balance is approvable.” The process now gives Centennial time to respond to the recommendations, a process that Centennial says will happen very quickly from their point of view. “Most of what was in the report we have already considered and we will be able to respond very quickly,” said Katie Brassil, Executive General Manager External Affairs from Centennial Coal. Whilst the full approval may still be many weeks away, it is a sign that the community getting behind the project and showing that they wanted to be heard has, at this stage, seen some positive results.
