International Men’s Day was celebrated on November 19 at Eskbank House Museum with an amazing exhibition of work created by a number of local men.

International Men’s Day was started in 1992 to provide a focus on men’s and boys’ health, promote gender equality, and highlight positive aspects of the male experience. It is an occasion for men to highlight discrimination against them and to celebrate their achievements and contributions. In Lithgow, the event was suggested by a local, Gary Fuller, who spoke to Eskbank Manager and Cultural Officer for the Council, Wendy Hawkes. Gary proposed that it would be good to arrange something local to celebrate the creativity of men, and to foster a mentoring culture between men and boys to help ensure we give our young people great guidance on their trip into manhood. The exhibition was opened by Mayor Maree Statham and attended by a small but committed group. Guest speaker Dr David Cowie spoke of his time in the local community health service and his work with Youthworx and discussed how he has seen a positive impact on boys who learn through watching far more than through

dialogue. “What men bring [when mentoring] are not just the skills and life experience - but also how to deal with frustrations and things that come up,” said Dr Cowie The exhibition displayed an eclectic mix of works, including paintings, sculpture, glassware, stonework and restorations. Wendy Hawkes was very impressed with the diversity present in the finished exhibition, but also spoke of the importance of the mentoring process. “I’m excited to see just how creative men are in the Lithgow region, and to give them an opportunity in a professional gallery - but the process of mentoring is also a very important part of this event.” In a great example of this process, artists Adrian Symes and Grant Weatherstone worked together on a piece made from an exercise bike and recycled vinyl singles. The event will be held again next year and the men of the region are invited to start thinking of how they could get involved and help continue growing this great celebration of our men.
