LOCAL NEWS AND EVENTS FOR THE LITHGOW REGION

Enjoying some fun in the sun Spring was in the air last week, and parents, grandparents and kids were making the most of the beautiful weather, getting out of the house and into the great outdoors. On Wednesday 24th September at Saville Park Portland, the Lithgow Child Protection Interagency hosted a free family fun day. With close to 300 people in attendance and the

sun shining, it was the perfect place for children to join in the fun while their parents caught up with some friends. LINC’s Communities and Kids, would like to thank all the local outreach services who attended the day. It was great to see community members from Lithgow, Wallerawang, Portland and Cullen joining in the activities available, the free sausage sizzle and an ice cream from Mr Whippy. They’d also like to thank Lithgow Council, for the grant they were given earlier in the year, a portion of which is specially allocated to host community

From

the Editor It may have been a quiet week in the local area, with kids enjoying school holidays, and some nice spring weather to get out and about, but the world stage has provided us with much to talk about. There are world events occurring, which none of us can control or influence, that are shocking beyond belief. Whilst I don’t want to dwell on those events as that is not the intention of this article, I want to use it to illustrate a point I have been attempting to make since issue number 1 of this publication. I may get a tad philosophical here, but stay with me. It’s important. The incredulity of the events we are seeing unfold before our eyes on television screens and in big newspapers gives us a gift. Perspective. When you see what others are being faced with, not just overseas but in the cities of our own nation, you can be thankful we live where we live. That perspective should give us a chance to look long and hard at our ‘problems’ and realise that perhaps they are not that problematic at all. We may not all see eye to eye on every issue all of the time, however it is highly unlikely anyone is going to resort to the level of violence we have witnessed over local issues facing our region. So the gift of perspective should be taken with both hands and held tightly and used as a salve when we feel we are being hard done by. It should be used when thinking you have an issue with someone, when things don’t go our way, when we don’t achieve what we would have liked to achieve. At least we are in a place in the world where we can solve our differences rationally, most of the time, and we do not fear for our lives when we stand up for what is important to us. I spend a lot of time driving around this region of ours, and every time I am amazed at what we have around us. I also spend a lot of time driving

to Sydney for meetings and other time-consuming things, and there is nothing like sitting in a traffic jam on the M5, witnessing first hand how irrational motorists become when they are frustrated by their circumstances, to feel thankful that even when work crews had half of the road torn up last week, the closest we came to a traffic jam was slowing down to 30km/h. I am not taking any side in this argument, nor am I suggesting you should. I am suggesting we should focus on something else. As this great quote says:

“Lord, grant me the strength to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Francis of Assisi Perspective allows us to be grateful for what we have. The little things matter a whole lot when you start deciding what is really important to you. Your local sports teams, the sunday afternoon bush walk in the back yard, or a quiet night out with friends. Life is about those little moments, and I for one cherish those, and the events of recent weeks make me more aware of just how lucky this country is. Particularly in our little corner. Also, we turn 30 this week... another milestone in our journey. Thank you all for the continuing support of our little paper. All the best Rich Evans

The Politics of Federation and Lithgow

Photos: Lithgow Then and Now by David Rawsthorne - Left: Lithgow circa 1906 near Feceration, Right: Lithgow 2014

The history of our town is deeply tied to both mining and politics. It is part of this political history that is the focus of the talk that will be given by Greg Patmore; Professor of Business and Labour History, Director of the Business and Labour History Group, and of the Co-operative Research Group in the School of Business, University of Sydney. The build-up to Federation and its implementation created tensions and concerns about the proposed equal state representation in the Senate and increased taxation. Professor Patmore’s talk will explore these issues and the immediate consequences of Federation for Lithgow. “With his deep interest in labour history, employee

representation and the impact of industrialisation and deindustrialisation on regional economies, Professor Patmore’s talk will highlight interesting moments in Australia’s history and explain how they have affected and shaped Lithgow’s past and present”, says Lithgow City Council Mayor Maree Statham.

The talk will take place at the Lithgow Library and Learning Centre, Main Street branch, on Monday 29 September with refreshments at 4.45 pm, for a 5.00 pm start. There is no charge.

Dementia Awareness Month Federal Member for Calare John Cobb believes this month, which is Dementia Awareness Month, provides the perfect opportunity to thank the many carers in the electorate who he believes do a magnificent job. Mr Cobb is taking this opportunity to thank the selfless carers who he says often “put the needs of others before their own”. “There wouldn’t be many people who haven’t been touched by dementia – whether it is a mum, a dad, perhaps an aunt or uncle or an elderly neighbour or friend,” he said. “So that’s why Dementia Awareness Month, is so important. It helps spread the word about dementia which we need to understand better, but also gives carers a great outlet for support.” “Carers come from all walks of life, cultural backgrounds and age groups,” Bathurst Seymour Centre’s Terisa Ashworth said. “There are almost 900,000 carers in NSW, which is about 12 per cent of the NSW population.” Statistics reveal that age is a major risk factor when it comes to dementia, with one in 10 people aged 65 years and over to three in 10 people aged 85

years and over suffering from the disease. Statistics also reveal that Australia’s population is ageing and as a result the number of people with dementia is projected to increase to 900,000 by 2050.

to reduce the stigma associated with the disease. To further raise awareness, the students will be painting canvas’s to reflect how they see themselves and their school as being unique. These canvas’s will then be displayed at Lithgow Library between the 10th and 17th of October and you are encouraged to stop by and check them out. Sacred Heart celebrates its 50th Anniversary By Joan Applin The Sacred Heart Catholic Church Wallerawang celebrated the 50th Anniversary of its opening on Sunday 7th September. Over 120 people gathered for Mass which was concelebrated by Bishop Michael McKenna, Parish Priest Fr Owen Gibbons and past priests Mons Pat O’Regan VG, Fr P Filby, Fr Pat Ruane and Fr Brien Murphy. The day was a huge success with the church and the grounds looking magnificent, thanks to the hard work of many parishioners. The day also saw the launch of a detailed Booklet complied by Anne Hayman. This booklet contains the history of the Catholic Church, in the area, its faith, its people, the clergy and much local ‘potted history’. A must read for all the history buffs. It is just $10 and available from the local Catholic Churches. The Catholic community of Wallerawang have the kept the Catholic faith alive since 1874. They have worshipped in many places along the way. From the first masses in Hartley Court House and St Bernard’s, the Carrington Hall and in many family homes to its present location. The original weatherboard Sacred Heart Church at Lidsdale serviced the community from the late 1880’s until a suicide in the church sacristy in 1919 saw the church desecrated. The building was moved

to Lidsdale Street in Wallerawang and re opened and blessed by Fr Doherty in April 1921. This church served the community until 1964 when the new church was opened by Bishop Thomas. It was thought that the township of Wallerawang would expand with the construction of the Power Station, so the building was built as a church/school complete Anne Hayman, Joy Fillingham, Izzy and Christine O’Mahony with the ‘bubblers’ out the back. WE NEED MORE FRIENDS

Passion goes a long way By Michael Todd People who start a business or run an existing business rarely lack advice. There is always someone that sticks their two bobs worth into your business (so to speak) which often starts with the reinforcement of the conventional actions needed. They say write a detailed business plan, set targets, look after your intellectual property, network and build relationships, promote yourself shamelessly, delegate lots and so on. I believe the orthodox approach isn’t always the appropriate one. In fact, more often than you may think, it’s the creative and unconventional types that insist on doing business how they please, that establish their point/s of difference early and become happy and successful. You need to see the market like no one before you and operate a service that adds something to people’s lives, being clearly different from your ‘competition’. I say competition like that because if you start with and then maintain an edge on businesses that advertise that they offer the same service as you, then they will not bother you much. The measurements of success are usually along the lines of results you provide clients, customer service you offer, and/or the type of product or service you deliver.

Every business has to be real, creating a vision or strategy that is not replicating the past. Thinking original thoughts and using proactive ideas that haven’t been practiced yet should be your priority. Of course, researching and thoughtful process before most decisions is advised, but many businesses that are successful didn’t necessarily start with the careful planning and capital you think they might have. In my opinion, if you have passion and enthusiasm in what you do, you will go a long way to achieving what you set out to. Sure, you need to have a great product or service, great customer service and have the basics covered but if you can’t imagine something happening then I can tell you it won’t in the real world. So take a look at your business now. What does it offer that is different to others? Is it you? Is it your methods of customer service? What else?

The same friendly service is set to continue at the newly named Mackenzie Motor Mechanics, formerly Lorimer Automotive. New owners, Eden & Naomi MacKenzie have been residents of Portland for 18 years. The couple decided to enter the world of business ownership recently and have taken over the existing mechanical repairs business with a hope to continue the tradition of friendly service - harking back to an age where that was the normal thing to expect. There is plenty of history associated with the business, however they have a focus on finding a balance between the new technology required to work on modern vehicles and the old fashioned values that a family owned business succeeds on. Most of the original staff have also stayed on with the new owners, ensuring the transition is even easier. Driveway service fuel fillups are still available, so drop in to see them on Wolgan Street in Portland and help another new business get off to a flying start.

If you have watched an episode of The Block then you may have got caught up with the excitement of the show. The reality of renovating to make money is often a different story. I know I have renovated 7 properties! Living through a renovation can be dirty and hard work, but it can be extremely profitable. If you get it right. It has been nearly 25 years since I worked as a student mining engineer at Angus Place Colliery but strangely enough it was what I learnt doing a risk assessment on a continuous miner with the underground team that actually taught me the skills that allowed me to build a large property portfolio. I know it sounds unlikely but for 15 years in the mining industry working mainly as an explosives expert I learnt the value of evaluating risk. Essentially it all comes down to knowing the risks and assessing if you can minimise the risk. This simple strategy I applied to buying my first property. I had a small deposit so I known I had to get it right, otherwise all those years of hard work and savings would be down the drain. So I researched what the risks were and what I could do to minimise the risk and simultaneously I studied what successful investors did. What I found was that it all came down to choosing the right property, in the right area, at the right price and then adding value to create equity through renovating. This became my Trid3nt Strategy (r) and how I built my portfolio and have taught to thousands of people. This strategy essentially gives you three ways to make money: 1. Buying below the market, ie making money when you buy straight away 2. Adding value through renovating ie making money in the short term 3. Buying in a good growth area, ie making money in the long term. So now you have a plan A, B and C to make money, the beauty of this low risk strategy is if you get one thing wrong then you have two back up plans. What you might of also noticed is that this could equally apply to buying a home. Using your home to create wealth for you is a secret most don’t realise. Did you know that Over 30% of Australians, according to a

recent RPData report, have a home worth double what they paid for it? Imagine if you knew how to, not only determine which suburb or town would perform better in the future, but also how to a assess a property for its renovation potential. So let’s look at where to buy a little closer. According to Residex the following is their predictions on capital growth in these areas: Lithgow median house price currently $241,000, 5 yr growth 6% and 8 yr growth 7% pa Portland median house price currently $180,500 5yr growth 7%pa and 8yr growth 8%pa Wallerawang median house price currently $230,500 5 yr growth 6%pa and 8yr growth of 9%pa To most this is just a jumble of numbers but let me decipher this. If you choose to purchase in Wallerawang then 8 years later, according to these predictions, you would be better off. So although the house price in Lithgow is currently more expensive in 8 years time a median house in Wallerawang would be worth more, in fact $45,000 more. Knowing where to buy is just one aspect of making money from property. Knowing how to find the right property and the assess it for potential for renovation is also required. If you would like to learn more about renovating to create wealth and how to actually inspect a property for renovation then check out the video series starting on Monday where I will escort you through a property and show you what to look for. So check it out here www.ultimateguidetorenovation.com.au Jane Slack-Smith is a respected property commentator, regularly appearing in Money Magazine and the author of Your Property Success with Renovation, 2 properties, 1 renovation, $1 million in the bank. She was recently awarded Australian Mortgage Broker of the Year and is the Director of the nation wide Investors Choice Mortgages and Your Property Success.

Why is an agent worth their commission? By Christine Dodson, One Agency From the outside a real estate agent’s job seems simple and easy. We market properties on the internet, show prospective buyers through and take offers which will result in the ultimate sale. This is a very simplified way of looking at it, but behind the scenes there’s quite a bit more. From the time we list your property, we work behind the scenes organising photography, preparing copies for advertising, organising brochures, signboards, print media, any labourers or tradespeople if needed, uploading property details onto websites and emailing and calling our buyers database. This is before the property is marketed. Once marketed, agents will take internet enquiry, phone calls all times of day and night and office walk-in enquiries. When an agent talks to a buyer, they will ask many questions to ‘qualify’ them to make sure buyers aren’t just ‘tyre kickers’ but are legitimate buyers who have or will be able to gain the money that’s needed to purchase your property.

10

Once an offer has been given, the negotiation process will begin. It’s rare a buyer will offer the asking price, so when an offer comes in below, a good agent will always try to negotiate the initial offer up, even if the first one may be acceptable by you. After an offer has been accepted, agents will continue to work with conveyancers/solicitors and will arrange times for pest and building inspections and ultimately the pre-settlement inspection. Should you list with an agent offering the cheapest commission? As with anything, generally, what you pay for is what you get. Before considering what commission an agent charges, work out what is important to you. There are a number of questions you should ask yourself: • Do you feel that the agent will work in your best interest and do you feel comfortable with them? Are you happy with the marketing they have to offer and have they explained why they choose the marketing mediums they use?

• Do you feel they have good negotiation skills and are you confident they will get the best possible price? • A great question to ask an agent is an example of how they have previously negotiated in the vendors’ best interest. Good agents love sharing instances of how they have got great results for vendors. After all, vendors are the ones who pay the agents’ commissions, not the buyers, so you want someone who’s going to work for you. • With everything each agent has to offer, who do you think the best value for money is and who are you most confident will put more money in your pocket at the end of the day? Remember; never be afraid to ask an agent to justify the commission they are charging. This is also a wonderful way to test an agent’s negotiation skills. If an agent is willing to throw away their own money just to win your listing, imagine what they’ll do with your money just to get a sale.

This week is about great movies and great drama. With the highly acclaimed The Code continuing on Sunday, and the intriguing Madam Secretary beginning on Thursday, it’s a good week to sit down and watch some TV. I’ll also add that a personal favourite, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, is restarting on Monday. Happy viewing, Irene

Ghostbusters By Irene Bowie-Johnson It may be on too late for most little ones, but there’s no reason that adults who are young at heart can’t sit down and enjoy the show. Ghostbusters is a movie that has stood the test of time. Although it was first released in 1984, it still has charm enough to win over even the most jaded viewer thirty years later. In it, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson star as a quartet of Manhattan-based “paranormal investigators” trying to make their business work in the face of rampant scepticism. Armed to the teeth with electronics, such as their Portable Containment Unit (known colloquially as the Ghost Vacuum) they are ready to take on all hauntings, big and small. Their big break really only happens, however, when New York is overcome by an army of unfriendly spirits ‘channelled’ through the beautiful cellist Sigourney Weaver and the nerdish Ricky Moranis. Quickly on the scene, the Ghostbusters confront the greatest threat of them all... a chubby, cheery, Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. In many ways, Ghostbusters has aged exceptionally well. The CGI may seem a little unpolished to our eyes, but overall it actually contributes to the charm of the movie. This is real 80s adventure-fantasy,

WHO SHOULD SERVICE YOUR VEHICLE?

Rotten Tomatoes Rating: complete with unconvincing lightning shooting about the screen. More than anything else, however, the thing that makes Ghostbusters excel is the acting. Everyone in the cast rides the fine line between reality and fantasy with aplomb, and the touches of zany humour are beautifully delivered. Bill Murray deftly leads the cast and his ability to make the most of the script (and the props) is as amusing as it is skillful. His dead-pan delivery sells lines that would otherwise fall over if attempted by a less skilled comedian. The core three characters are brilliantly drawn, with their shared history giving their relationships depth. None of them really get on, but they stick together - outcasts against the world - and it’s easy to believe they form the only real friendships any of them have ever really had. Ghostbusters is a movie that takes itself just seriously enough to be almost scary, while also poking fun at itself in the most creative way. Not really a horror film, not really a comedy, Ghostbusters defies definition - and it almost seems wrong to try and apply a neat label. It’s a genre hybrid and that’s a large part of its strength. A movie that’s well worth the watch - or rewatch, as the case may be - Ghostbusters is both a movie for of its time, and a movie for all times.

Merida is the impetuous daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). An adventurous spirit, and a skilled archer, she’s determined to carve her own path in life... even if it means defying age old customs held sacred by the lords of the land. Unfortunately, Merida’s spirited refusal to do as she’s told backfires, and she turns to a Witch for help, only to be granted an illfated wish instead. A great film, perfect for all ages, Brave is ultimately about discovering that bravery sometimes means doing something other people want you to do - even when you don’t want to do it yourself.

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - Sat 27 - Fri 3 In this season premiere, Coulson and his team are now wanted fugitives with limited resources. In the last season Coulson discovered, along with his team, that S.H.I.E.L.D, far from being the upholder of all that is moral and good, is in fact and organisation rife with corruption and kept afloat by unsavoury individuals. Now, Coulson is on a mission to rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D as it should be, but with new enemies crawling out of the woodwork, will he be able to succeed?

A friendship with the opposite sex is favoured and you may benefit from seeking out an emotional bond. A personal bias is apt to cloud your objectivity over money.

Interaction with people you owe money too will be tense, keep your emotions under control. A fast pace can be expected. Take a chance with speculation.

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - Sat 27 - Fri 3 It’s hard to believe but Catch Me If You Can is based on a true story. No, really. Frank Abagnale Jr. really did leave home at 16 and proceed to pass over 2.5 million dollars in phoney checks, while successfully posing as a pilot, a teacher, a lawyer and a doctor... all before the age of 21. A mind-boggling movie that becomes even more incredible when you realise that it’s real, Catch Me If You Can does an amazing job of dramatising the life of Frank Abagnale Jr.

Catherine said that we should ‘Expect to see a varied collection of my photography, digital art and paintings. This is a collection of works that came to me in moments of inspiration. I have always created art, it is a passion of mine. For me inspiration comes from many things... a scent, a colour, a photo my local surroundings, nature, the weather a song, poetry or even a mood. This “Inspirations” Exhibition is a collection of artworks that are the result of my moments of inspiration. I am thrilled to share my artworks with you and to finally introduce my paintings as well.

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - Sat 27 - Fri 3 Hailed as a TV drama about a tough likeable woman, Madam Secretary is definitely a drama to catch this week. In it, Tea Leoni acts the US Secretary of State - a pollie with a heart, but also with a will of steel. But, don’t let the politics deter you! There is more to Madam Secretary than dry politics. The political complexities are appropriately dialed down and dramatised, making the show more about the characters than anything else. Absolutely watchable after a long day at work, Madam Secrety is worth giving a go.

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - Sat 27 - Fri 3 This movie starts with Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), pulled from the Mediterranean by Italian fisherman, a barely alive amnesiac with a pair of bullet wounds in his back. Bourne’s only clue to his own identity is a bank account number etched on a capsule implanted in his body. This is a movie that doesn’t pull any punches as Bourne quickly discovers that he possesses a surprising degree of skill in combat, martial arts, and linguistics - talents that clearly indicate his past includes work as a spy and assassin, but for whom? Action packed and fast paced this is a movie well worth the watch and a great way to spend your Friday night.

Australian property market update By Charles Tarbey, Chairman and Owner of Century 21 Australasia The past few years have seen interest rates at unprecedented lows, a surge of interest in property as an asset class and property values increasing steadily. During this time, a variety of themes have found their way into media discussion on the Australian property market as a whole. One such theme is the notion that negative gearing should be grandfathered out by limiting it to newly constructed properties. While this might have the effect of stimulating the construction industry, I believe it could impact very heavily on people who already own investment properties. By removing the tax breaks which negative gearing provides to investors on their existing properties, the ability of investors to sell these properties may be affected, as investors preference switches to new developments. Aside from the obvious implications for these investors who own established properties,

it could also reduce the supply of rental properties on the market and increase rents. Another theme regards the use of vendor bids at an auction. The use of vendor bids has traditionally served to encourage increased bidding in a sluggish auction where bidding has not yet surpassed the reserve. Vendor bids might be placed at the beginning, middle or end of an auction, and the auctioneer normally announces the vendor bid on behalf of the vendor. While this might be one strategy which adds some energy to an otherwise lacklustre auction, I believe that if you invest in a strong marketing campaign and an experienced agent, there should be enough interest in the property that you shouldn’t have to use this strategy. A vendor’s bid can also send a mixed message to sellers, especially if it is placed after other competitive bidders have placed bids. In these situations, it may be more effective to consider letting the property pass in at auction and negotiating after the auction

has concluded. For those Australians seeking to enter the market this spring, I encourage you to take the time to build your own market intelligence and spend time with property professionals who will be able to assist you in making the right purchase. For those selling property this spring, good luck, and I recommend you ensure you have adequate time to invest in selecting the right agent, presenting your property in the best light possible and working closely with your agent to ensure you get the best result possible. Decorating your home with clocks By Renee Difranco Even though clocks may not measure wisdom, they might impart some design acumen. A clock can be the perfect accent piece you need for decorating any room. From a little desk clock to a stately grandfather clock and anywhere in between, clocks can be the perfect design décor for you home. Adding one or two vintage things to your interior is almost always a good idea. A wall clock could very well be one of those good ideas. These days clocks are more than just instruments to tell the time. They are used for not only their functionality but mainly for their look. Sometimes they are better wall decorations than art or mirrors. You can choose the clock to fit your current interior perfectly or you can choose one that will become the main focal point of your interior or even one that catches the attention of anyone walking into the room. Designers and design enthusiasts are using clocks as décor because they are so dramatic and charming. You can use an oversized clock or a grouping of smaller clocks, either way they will create the focal point you are looking for. Clocks are a great way to make a design statement especially when they are used in a living room about the fireplace mantel, above the sofa on an empty wall, in an entryway above a console table or even above a bed. Clocks are very versatile as they can incorporate any décor styles such as traditional, eclectic, country, transitional, etc. Check out the

7 Main Street Lithgow pictures of some of the clocks we have here at Bianca Villa. The photos only show a few of the design clocks we have in our collection. If you don’t see the clock for you why not come in and have a look and you may just find the perfect clock for your décor in your home.

Climbing beauties for a stunning display By Barbara Moran, Goodearth Nursery Climbing plants can make a stunning display against a post, pergola, shed wall or against a fence. Clematis Jackmanii are a large flowering variety of deciduous Clematis which are ideal to soften harsh edges. Clematis are long lived plants. Most are climbers, but some are clumping. The larger flowered varieties are all deciduous, but there are several evergreens. Careful site selection and proper planting will certainly go a long way to having beautiful clematis. Most clematis are the perfect companion plant to other plants in the garden. They are not destructive, can be easily pruned off after flowering and add colour where it is least expected. You can use them as ground covers, through small trees, in amongst perennials as well as through both climbing and

bush roses. To grow clematis successfully follow the following tips: • Avoid a very hot westerly aspect unless protected by some sort of shade or plant. • You must keep the root zone cool, so mulching or a stone will do that easily. • They need to be kept moist but not wet and mulch and a dripper can do this. • Feed with a rose fertilizer every three months • Prune in late winter to a strong set of buds and trim them up after flowering Clematis come in a variety of dazzling colours from a brilliant white, soft pinks and rich purples and reds. There are many popular varieties such as Aumann, Ville de Lyon, Lord Neville, Piilu, The President. If you can successfully grow roses then clematis should not be a problem for you by using the same techniques as you do with roses.

Clematis Jackmanii ‘Aumann’

An update from Lithgow Garden Club By Robyn Da Costa Recently, the Barton Park Giant Trees Arboretum contacted the Lithgow Garden Club about a potential gardening project possible at the aboretum. A committee founded by a small but enthusiastic community group in 2007 at the instigation of Bruce Ryan and Mark Watchorne, the arboretum committee is dedicated to creating a grove of the world’s largest, longest lived and most rare endangered trees. Bruce and Mark contacted the Lithgow Garden Club to see if members would be interested in setting up a garden in the area. After a delightful morning tea at June and Barry Mays’ house, members met with Bruce and Mark and some of their committee at Lake Wallace to discuss a suitable site. It was a hard decision, but we have narrowed it down to go before the Garden Club Committee. We are looking forward to getting started on this project. In other news, 23 members took a trip to Cowra via Carcoar recently. Morning tea was a Stoke House in Carcoar , There was a delightful cottage garden to wander through and a Museum with lots of antique farm machinery. The drive from Carcoar to Cowra

was spectacular, with fields of golden canola as far as the eye could see. Cowra streets were awash with blossoms too. The POW site was very moving, as was the Cemetery. The highlight of the trip was the Japanese Gardens, so much to see, so little time, one could spend couple of days there. Another great day out with thanks to our Social Secretary Pat Thomson. A working bee is to be held at Quota Park to

rejuvinate and plant out the raised garden beds. Garden Club members along with Council and the Cancer Support group will be there. Monday October 6th at 7pm is the first night meeting for the Garden Club. The Guest Speaker is Rosie Galloway, Project Manager for the Bush Tucker, Sustainability Garden at the Lithgow High School. Council, Coles and Bunnings have made generous donations towards this project.

Lithgow Regional Markets are on again By Noeline Thorne If you like a variety of quality hand made goods visit the Sweet Briar Cottage stall on Sunday at the Lithgow Regional Markets. The ladies are very knowledgeable when it comes to their crafts. We have Sonda back with her excellent, attractive framed wall hangings. Look closely & you will see her fine needlework. Also new this month we have Michael & again intricate work in the form of wire trees. With the change in the weather Jodie is joining us with his statues. These will look great in your garden or on your lawn area. So much of what we have on offer could be considered for Christmas gifts because December 25th is not that far away. See you on Sunday!

HEALTH & FITNESS

Exercise could be your fountain of youth By Jane Coates, Anytime Fitness We all know there is no such thing as the fountain of youth, but there is something we can do every day that can help keep us feeling, looking and moving like our younger selves – exercise. Exercise is one of our best defences against mental and physical degeneration and, once your doctor gives the all-clear, a professionally programed workout routine can help keep your body and mind in peak condition as you age. For some of us, our bodies show increased signs of ageing after we hit 40 and that’s often when we decide it’s time to address increasing waistlines, stiff and sore joints, limited range of movement, or health concerns including high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and cholesterol problems. Women can start losing some bone matter in their 30s, with bone loss significantly increasing after menopause. But weight-bearing exercises such as walking, running, dancing and strength training can help increase mineral density by placing stress on

the bones – this applies to women and men. Similarly, you lose muscle mass as your body ages. Again, strength training exercises help create new muscle tissue, helping you to maintain a leaner body composition. Muscle is active tissue, so while your metabolism naturally slows over the years, regular exercise helps rev it back up. Effectively your body burns more calories to maintain muscle than it does to maintain fat so as you lose fat and gain muscle with regular workouts, you’ll burn more calories 24 hours a day, making weight management easier. In addition, exercise can slim your waistline by helping to remove the unseen visceral fat that pads your internal abdominal organs. Another upside of exercising as we age is the benefit aerobic exercise can have helping to keep your heart and blood vessels healthy by lowering blood pressure and reducing levels of LDL cholesterol in your bloodstream. Your heart will grow stronger with regular cardio workouts, pumping blood more efficiently around your body, meaning more oxygen

will flow to your muscles and vital organs. Frequency is the key to reaping the health rewards of exercise. The Australian Department of Health’s physical activity guide for older Australians recommends that older people, no matter what their age, weight, health problems or abilities, should do some form of physical activity every day in as many ways as possible, accumulating at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most, preferably all, days. Older people who have stopped physical activity, or who are starting a new physical activity, should start at a level that is easily manageable and gradually build up the recommended amount, type and frequency of activity. Those who have continued to enjoy a lifetime of physical activity should carry on doing so in a manner suited to their capability into later life, provided recommended safety procedures and guidelines are adhered to which is something personal trainers can assist with.

7 reasons why you should attend Haktari Taekwondo Academy in Lithgow By Amy Muir Pain, suffering and an old, wise, bearded bloke with a cane. That’s how movies and TV have portrayed learning a martial art. And although Hollywood’s ‘wax on, wax off’ approach may seem like the only way to become an amazing and formidable martial artist with a rocking bod, the practical South Korean martial art of Taekwondo can still give you the crazy fast and amazing techniques plus more, just like the movies! So? What’s in it for me? Well for anyone interested, Taekwondo clocks up some awesome benefits on your health mentally, physically and emotionally. In fact we’re so sure of the benefits you can get from Taekwondo we have made a list:

Fitness Factor

Building up your fitness is inevitable in the sport of TKD, you are always moving and gaining fitness without even knowing it! This can help you in so many aspects of your life.

Self Defence

One of the key areas in TKD is learning self defence. Learning how to protect yourself is essential.

Flexible strong and coordinated

Feeling a bit unco at sports or in gym? Finding it more and more difficult to pick up a heavy load and can’t do more than 10 push ups? Can’t touch your toes? Solved, solved and solved. Your answer? Taekwondo. TKD is mainly a kicking sport so you are stretching and gaining more flexibility which can help you get those amazing kicks. There is also a lot of strength in the sport of Taekwondo from you legs, through your core as well as your arms. In TKD you could be working more muscles than you knew you had! Keeping you toned and looking good, just in time for summer!

Friends and fun

At every Taekwondo (TKD) training centre you are bound to find some great friendly people to train with. It is also scientifically proven that when you train or learn something new with a friend, you are 40% more likely to remember what you are being taught. New friends plus learning. Win win!

Makes you all round happy

Imagine if there was a type of wonder drug that would increase your self esteem and self worth, give you positive outlooks on life and make you happy. Well there is and it is called Taekwondo. In fact a study done by Teen Health Australia shows that exercising releases endorphins in you brain and through the rest of your body making you feel happy, positive and energised. And because of your newly found happiness you can have a positive outlook on nearly anything. How much more do you want!

It’s for everyone

Probably one of the greatest aspects of Taekwondo is that it is for everyone. Unlike some of the more gender orientated sports such as Football or Netball, Taekwondo is for everyone. Guys and girls, young and old and in-between. There is no discrimination and everyone can train with everyone. It is a great way to get to know people better without it being awkward.

Confidence and leadership

Many people start TKD with very little confidence, are quite shy and haven’t got very many leadership skills. One week and suddenly they are more talkative and confident and can start to show signs of leadership. You develop the confidence to talk to people your age younger and older. This new found confidence can really help you interact with people, or even ask that special someone out. As you can now see, there are so many brilliant

Amy Muir

benefits you can get from TKD that you will be kicking yourself if you don’t sign up right now.
