LIVE'N'LOCAL AFTER THE FIRES

(from front page) Lithgow City Council, in collaboration with the National Bushfire Recovery Agency continues to present a season of Live'n'Local community live music events. On Saturday 11th of July a small audience were treated to the sounds of young local artists Paige McNamara and Izzy Cobcroft followed by local duo Momentum. While the artists and live audience got to enjoy the delicious tastes of Lithgow’s iconic Tin Shed, a virtual audience of over 500 got to enjoy the live streamed event from the comfort of their own lounge rooms. “The arrival of Covid has had major impacts on our communities but let’s not forget the bushfires that devastated us only months before,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Ray Thompson. “There are many still reeling in our community and struggling to recover from the disastrous fires on top of the recent droughts.” While there is much work still to be done in rebuilding

the lives of those effected by the bushfires, the Live ‘n’ Local project is designed to bring the community back together to celebrate what is great about our communities and begin the process of healing and rebuilding together. The series continues this week with a live stream from the historic and beautiful venue ‘the Foundations’ Willawa Street in Portland. Due to social distancing there is a strict limit of 50 audience members, this is a family friendly event with no alcohol allowed. First come first served so bring the kids down to celebrate the end of school holidays. There are heaters but you should still dress very warm and come for a night of music and fun. From the Editor's Desk

THIS IS MY BRAVE By Rich Evans “My name is Rich Evans. I am a father, a husband, a CEO, a Founder, a Reactivator, an Author, a tireless community worker, I am a hard worker and I get things done…” That is the introduction to a piece I am reading at the This Is My Brave audition this Saturday at The Neighbourhood Centre up in Bathurst. Sounds inspiring right? What follows is - “I also live with depression and anxiety. I have been at the bottom of the abyss more than once, have in my past contemplated ending my own life, and have come very close on three occasions.” This Is My Brave is putting on this very important show in Bathurst this October with the mantra “Storytelling Saves Lives” and I am supporting this organisation and event by telling my own story and doing everything I can to use the platforms at my disposal to highlight the event so we can take another step in ending the stigma surrounding living with mental illness. I often say I don’t just “survive with mental health challenges, I thrive because of them.” This is true because that is my way of living with it. I keep busy, I do everything I can every day to prove to myself that I am living a life worth living.

It is not easy to talk about these things, even though I have worked hard to find a way to do so, it still hurts, and when I do, I am thrust back to where it all began in my childhood, but I put my feet back on the path and put one foot in front of the other till I find my way again. If you would like to join me this weekend on Saturday or Sunday, you need to register to audition at https://www. thisismybraveaustralia.com/ auditions Be Brave, and lets end the stigma together.

TURBOCHARGED PROGRAM DRIVING SMOOTHER TRIPS FOR LITHGOW The Australian and NSW Governments will invest more than $1.3 million to Dark Corner Road and Hartley Vale Road as part of a new stimulus package to boost local roads and create regional jobs.

The Australian Government has committed $191 million to build on the NSW Government’s $500 million Fixing Local Roads program, ensuring even more regional communities benefit, faster. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Australian Government’s funding injection was about generating jobs, encouraging spending and stimulating local economies. “The injection will see $382 million of joint funding allocated to shovel-ready projects able to start in the next 12 months, driving an estimated 3,500 jobs in regional NSW, Mr McCormack said. NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the NSW

Government was also accelerating its funding for the program to get more projects to seal, maintain and repair local roads under way faster. “We’re not just putting our foot down in terms of delivering this package – we’re turbocharging it to ensure we create jobs and create better journeys on the roads that really matter to local communities, Mr Toole said. “This is about delivering small projects that can make a big difference for local communities – projects that will drive valuable jobs in our region over the next 12 months as councils get cracking on delivery. Mr Toole said round one of the program would see more than $250 million invested in 258 projects across 83 Local Government Areas, including Lithgow. “This is about delivering smoother, safer trips along the roads our community use every day – roads like Dark Corner Road and Hartley Vale Road, Mr Toole said. “This will include sealing, linemarking, and drainage work along various lengths of the two roads. Projects will need to be delivered within two years of receiving funding, to ensure that local communities are benefiting sooner. Applications for round two of the program will open later this year.

AUS GOVERNMENT INVESTS IN SMALL ARMS MANUFACTURING IN LITHGOW

The Australian Government will boost the Australian Army’s weapon systems capability with the purchase of an additional 8,500 world-class, Australian made Enhanced F88 (EF88) rifles. The rifles will be manufactured at the Thales Australia site in Lithgow, New South Wales which employs around 130 Australians. This additional acquisition of rifles will not only improve the overall capability of the Australian Defence Force but will also provide a welcome boost to the workforce in the Lithgow region.    While the Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee, has welcomed the announcement that the 8,500 additional rifles will be manufactured in Lithgow, he has reissued his call for defence companies, Thales and Nioa, to publicly state their position with respect to the future of local arms manufacturing and the Small Arms Factory in Lithgow. The two companies are believed to be competing for the rifle component of a recent Department of Defence tender for the provision a wide array of defence equipment. "I am calling on both companies to publicly state their position with respect to the future of local arms manufacturing and the Small Arms Factory in Lithgow (now known as Lithgow Arms),â€? Mr Gee said. “I will personally oppose and campaign against any company that does not categorically and publicly confirm that, if they win the contract, they will be manufacturing in Lithgow. “The Lithgow Small Arms Factory has been supporting the Australian Defence Force for over a century and they and the broader Lithgow community need certainty about the future of manufacturing in Lithgow, particularly during these tough economic times.  â€œWhile this latest acquisition of rifles is a very positive step in the right direction, we still need both companies to confirm their long-term intentions and provide certainty for the Small Arms Factory in Lithgow and the Lithgow community. This is why I continue to call on Thales and Nioa to make their positions crystal clear in relation to the broader defence tender.  â€œI also believe that it is vital what we continue to ensure crucial local manufacturing experience and capabilities are not lost. The best way to do this is to continue to invest in and support local manufacturers like the Lithgow Small Arms Factory. “As one of Australia’s oldest small arms manufacturers, the experience of the Lithgow Small Arms Factory cannot be beaten, and I am committed to backing Australian arms manufacturing on this historic site. “I will also issue this warning: Don’t mess with the Lithgow community - it will not end well.â€?

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud today announced the successful recipients of the Educating Kids About Agriculture: Kids to Farms grant program delivering on a key election commitment. “This exciting program will connect see our state and territory farming organisations connect our kids with farms and provide them with a real hands-on experience and insight into what’s involved from the paddock to the plate” said Minister Littleproud. “We want to give our kids a greater understanding of the important role Australia’s thriving agriculture sector plays in our society and these immersive, real life experiences on-farm is sure to spark a life-long love of the land. “A key part of this program is to showcase to our kids the breadth of career opportunities available in agriculture. “The kids of today will be the farmers, agri-scientists,

livestock agents, biosecurity officers - even ag ministers of tomorrow. “Australia’s farming sector will lead our recovery out of COVID-19 and there has never been a better time for young Australians to study and pursue a career in agriculture.” These farming bodies will receive grants to sponsor government, Catholic and independent primary school visits to farms and other primary production worksites to learn about agriculture production, sustainability practices and land stewardship: - Northern Territory Farmers Association Incorporated - The Western Australian Farmers Federation (Inc) - AgForce Queensland Farmers Ltd - The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association - NSW Farmers' Association - Victorian Farmers Federation - Primary Producers SA Incorporated

Applications are now open for ANZ’s Seeds of Renewal program, with grants of up to $15,000 available for not-forprofit organisations in rural areas to support the ongoing prosperity of regional Australia. Established in 2003 and administered by the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR), the program has provided more than $5 million to more than 800 community groups to support local projects and help build vibrant and sustainable rural and regional communities. In 2020, the ANZ Seeds of Renewal program is offering a share of $250,000 to community organisations in regional locations for projects that improve: -Environmental sustainability: initiatives that restore and conserve the natural environment or which contribute to lower carbon emissions, water stewardship and waste minimisation -Financial wellbeing: particularly for under-represented and disadvantaged people in the community, including initiatives that improve economic participation. For example, building financial literacy and vocational skills and providing access to meaningful work -Housing access: initiatives and programs that support those experiencing or at risk of homelessness or that provide supports for people living with disability ANZ General Manager Business Banking Jenefer Stewart said: “The ANZ Seeds of Renewal program has supported hundreds of community-based, grassroots programs and initiatives that have created new opportunities for

regional communities. It is truly humbling to see the difference these grants are able to make in rural and regional Australia," Ms Stewart said. Last year, ANZ and FRRR provided grants to 25 community groups for projects ranging from saving an endangered bee species on Kangaroo Island to supporting young people at risk of homelessness in the Port Hedland region of Western Australia. These projects shared in $250,000 in cash, and a further $16,728 in IT equipment provided by ANZ’s technology partner Lenovo. FRRR CEO, Natalie Egleton said, “Rural and regional communities play such a vital role in the prosperity of Australia. Yet they face far greater economic inequity and limited housing opportunities compared to those living in the city. Additionally, rural areas are also often at the forefront of environmental disasters, like drought and bushfires. The ANZ Seeds of Renewal program is a great opportunity to help address these challenges with locallyappropriate solutions. We look forward to seeing what inspirational ideas rural and regional communities put forward this year,” Ms Egleton said. Applications open on Tuesday, 14 July and close Wednesday, 19 August 2020. BUILD YOUR PERSONAL BRAND Better Business Column - by Rich Evans

Businesses right now are trying to find any way they can to get things rolling again. Unfortunately when times are a bit tough and people have limited cashflow to pay for marketing campaigns, they feel like there is nothing they can do. However, one of the cheapest and most effective things people can do is to focus on the one thing they have that none of their competitors do - their Personal Brand.Only you can be you, so make sure you define what that is and then use it to your advantage. In this 24/7 media consuming world we live in, everyone can be a superstar, and everyone should be the face of their business. We recognise and follow people, not companies. Think about it, you see a picture of Steve Jobs – You think of Apple… but he has been gone for nearly 9 years. Think of Richard Branson, you think of Virgin. The Virgin group has hundreds of businesses, and they all benefit from being associated with Sir Richard’s image, even though he never steps foot in most of them. The list goes on and on, but the simple truth is this. Even if your business is growing and you want your team to be the ones people recognise, having you as a figurehead, or face of the company can only add value in the long run, and help you build your own profile that will carryon to whatever you may want to do in the future.

follow us on

For more information about ANZ Seeds of Renewal, or to apply for a grant visit FRRR's website.

I am not suggesting for one second that you create a character… I am suggesting you get very clear about the real you that is the one that people are inspired by, put some framework around who that is and make sure you live up to it every day. This is the basis of what social media marketing is in the modern era. You. Live video – is dominating social media right now and to be able to stream on demand you need to be clear on who you are, what you are going to say and a host of other things. Not just on Facebook, but on YouTube, tiktok and many other platforms, putting yourself out there and building an audience can be a very effective strategy. It is not hard, but it does take some work. I suggest sitting down and asking yourself these questions… 1. Who am I? 2. How do I present myself, what do I wear? 3. How do you speak? 4. What am I talking about? 5. Who am I talking to? This is the basis of having these things in place so you don’t have to think about the basics, you only have to think about the content you want to deliver. Then prepare your message, get your iPhone and a tripod and get to it. Where personal branding gets really powerful is when you become the face of something, be it your business or a cause, and then other people - like those of us in the media - will reach out, ask you for a photo, a story, or you could even create your own and send in a press release. We are far more likely to run a piece from someone we have heard of and recognise than someone who we can't even find on Facebook. It is not for everyone, it wasn't even for me to start with, I am an introvert by nature, but I had to learn to overcome that to get the best results for my business.

WORK FORGING AHEAD ON OBERON’S NEW INDOOR FITNESS CENTRE An investment of $500,000 by the NSW Government is set to improve the quality of life of local Oberon residents.

Last year Bathurst MP Paul Toole announced the government would provide $500,000 to Oberon Council to see an indoor fitness centre established in the town. Mr Toole said the initiative was now forging ahead with construction well underway and is being made possible thanks to funding through the government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund (SCCF). He said the need for an indoor fitness centre has been well documented due to Oberon’s high altitude cool climate and the large number of shift workers in the area employed at the local timber mill. “An indoor, all-weather fitness centre is a much needed

facility that will address the needs for people of all ages in the local community,” Mr Toole said. “The indoor fitness centre will provide a fitness facility for the community who currently have limited fitness and recreational opportunities.” Mr Toole said the indoor fitness centre is currently under construction on the western side of the local swimming pool complex. “It will feature a fully enclosed front half including an airconditioned gym space, amenities and office facilities, while the rear half will be partially enclosed and have solid walls and a retractable blind system that can be closed for wind protection,” Mr Toole said. “This rear space will have a half-sized basketball court that can be used for outdoor fitness activities and a direct link to the gymnasium via a roller shutter.” Mr Toole said the project will complement the work already completed at the Oberon Pool.

NEW PROGRAM DELIVERS LIFESAVING LEARNINGS FOR YOUNG ROAD USERS Australian Road Safety Foundation transforms road safety education with innovative online tool.

With the support of the Federal Government, the Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF) has today launched a new road safety initiative, designed to deliver a new standard of road safety education for young people prior to obtaining a learner’s permit. RoadSetis a free online interactive learning experience and education tool aimed at Year 9 students, designed to help young people become better road users – making Australian roads safer for everyone. Driven by the ARSF with funding provided by the Australian Government, RoadSet combines original animation with gamified interactions to deliver immersive, engaging content across 10 easy-to-digest modules, which are supported by additional curriculumaligned teaching and learning resources. ARSF founder and CEO Russell White said the Progressive Web App was an important innovation that will provide a national approach in age appropriate road safety education and is a first step in moving towards a more holistic learning platform for the next generation of road users. It will provide a framework for earlier road user education that will help young people be better and safer road users. “We need to remember that safety isn’t just about drivers, but about all road users, and that includes children on bikes, skateboards, scooters or simply walking on foot,” Mr White said. “In fact, road trauma is the biggest killer of Australian kids aged between one and 14 and to change these tragic statistics, we need to address road safety in a new way. “Our innovative approach is designed to increase road safety awareness skills in young Australians and highlight strategies to help prevent crashes and reduce road trauma. In this way, we are adding a layer of education to foster greater understanding and better behaviour that will save lives.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said road safety is of vital importance to each and every Australian. “The Federal Government is proud to support the Australian Road Safety Foundation’s RoadSet initiative, as it works hand in hand with the Department’s national road safety agenda,” Mr McCormack said. “RoadSet transforms the way road safety education is delivered. The program takes students on an engaging, self-guided learning journey, helping them develop their road awareness skills across a range of conditions, environments and scenarios.” RoadSet c an be easily integrated into the Australian Curriculum’s Health and Physical Education learning area or can be run as a separate wellbeing or road safety education program. Leading road safety advocate Mr White said reducing

road trauma was ultimately a community issue. “That’s why, in addition to schools, we’ve made RoadSet available to the wider community,” he said. “Youth-based groups and other organisations can access theRoadSet program, along with all accompanying teaching and learning resources, free of charge.” Adolescent Success executive officer Angela White said RoadSet empowers teenagers to take ownership of their own behaviour. “Getting teenagers to pay attention to road safety messages can be a challenge. RoadSet’s approach is refreshingly different and talks to students on their level,” she said. Students and other individual users can download the free RoadSet program by visiting www.roadset.com.auon any device. Teachers and community educators can access supporting learning materials by visiting the teacher resources page on the R oadSetwebsite.

Lithgow City Council to fund environmental projects after EPA investigation into Wallerawang Sewage Treatment Plant Lithgow City Council (Council) has entered into an Enforceable Undertaking with the Environment Protection Authority following a water pollution and land pollution incident involving the release of up to 13,000 litres of liquid caustic soda from the Wallerawang Sewage Treatment Plant in August and September 2019. Caustic soda is a highly corrosive hazardous substance and a dangerous good. The incident gave rise to a number of breaches of the Protection of Environment Operations Act 1997, including pollution of waters and land in the immediate vicinity for which Council acknowledges responsibility. The Enforceable Undertaking requires Council to pay $100,000 towards weed eradication at Farmers Creek and to fund and implement various activities including the renewal of Pollution Incident Response Management Plans, specific training and review of operation and maintenance procedures. These measures are intended to prevent a similar incident occurring again, improve environmental management of

CRUCIAL SUPPORT NEEDED TO RESCUE APPRENTICES The state’s peak business organisation, Business NSW, says that immediate Government intervention is needed to rescue work opportunities for more than 50,000 young people.

The call for action is in response to the report Skilling Australia for a better future: Supporting apprenticeships through COVID-19 produced by Business NSW on the impact of the pandemic on apprenticeships. “We knew that apprentices were doing it tough, but we hadn’t realised how tough,” said Business NSW Regional Manager – Western NSW, Vicki Seccombe “Our findings show that the number of apprentices commencing in 2020 will be more than 30 per cent lower than in 2019,” Ms Seccombe said. “That’s 54,000 predominately young people missing out on the opportunity to upskill, reskill and get a job. “Without significant intervention, the number of

apprentices in training in 2021 will fall to levels not seen since 1998 and are unlikely to recover until 2025, even if the economy is on the path to recovery. “Given the scale of the impact, Government must act now to make any inroads into turning the trend around, including by providing employers with a significant subsidy for new starter apprentice wages. “The highly-effective Supporting Apprentices and Trainees subsidy needs to continue past its 1 October expiry date and be phased out over the next year. “Young people also need access to an industrysupported pre-apprenticeship program to help them prepare for the workforce, and ongoing support for Group Training Organisations is also crucial to support both apprentices and their employers. “COVID-19 has had a huge impact on businesses, with many still willing but incapable of providing training opportunities. “Taking action now will help the current and future generations of young people gain the skills they need to avoid a life on welfare. “We can’t leave it five years before doing anything. By then, it will be far too late,” Ms Seccombe said.

NEW COURSES FOR TAFE LITHGOW TAFE NSW Lithgow has moved to help address the shortage of social housing and community service workers by offering three new courses to the community through a mixture of flexible online study and face-to-face workshops.

TAFE NSW Regional General Manager, Kate Baxter, said, “The health, wellbeing and community services industry is forecast to have the biggest employment increase in Western NSW over the next three yearsi. “The Certificate IV in Social Housing, Certificate IV and Diploma of Community Services are nationally recognised courses that will equip students with the skills that they need to be employed to deliver social housing and a range of services to the community. “TAFE NSW are committed to providing regional places like Lithgow with opportunities to upskill with experienced industry professionals.” The new courses are not only aimed at current employees who want to progress their career in the social housing and community services industry, but also community members who are interested in starting a new career. TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Community Services, Scott Sears, said the courses will commence in August and provide an ideal pathway to employment or career progression. “Successful completion of these courses can lead to crucial community service roles such as a client services officer, youth case worker, mental health support worker or an alcohol and other drugs worker – just to name a few. “It doesn’t matter where people are living in the region, they will now have the opportunity to learn from a range of experienced teachers and industry experts at TAFE NSW. FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CALARE

$1,363,500 TO BOOST ROAD SAFETY & JOBS IN LITHGOW

RUNS ON THE BOARD √ $1,363,500 for the the Fixing Local Roads Program

Last week I stopped off at Hartley Vale Road outside Lithgow to check out the funding injection coming its way from a joint partnership between the Australian and NSW Governments.

√ $47,000 for Lithgow Halloween

Part of the $1,363,500 being contributed to the Lithgow LGA under the Fixing Local Roads Program will go towards the sealing of this road. These works will make it much safer and more accessible for motorists in the area. Dark Corner Road will also undergo major works.

√ $4,725 for the construction of pathways for improved wheelchair access at The Glen Museum

This funding injection is great for the local community as it will also support jobs and businesses during these tough times. I’m delighted that the Australian Government has been able to turbocharge this program with the State Government so we can get shovels in the ground sooner for critical road projects.

√ $796,800 under the Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program

√ MRI Licence for Lithgow √ $7,600 for restoration of the Tarana Village Recreation Reserve Andrew with Mayor Ray Thompson, Jonathan Edgecombe and Craig Butler, from Lithgow City Council, and Greg Noble, owner of the Comet Inn at Hartley Vale

DON’T MESS WITH LITHGOW

UPDATE ON LITHGOW SMALL ARMS MANUFACTURING Good news on the future of Lithgow Small Arms Factory! The Australian Government will boost the Australian Army’s weapon systems capability with the purchase of an additional 8,500 world-class, Australian made Enhanced F88 (EF88) rifles and the rifles will be manufactured at the Thales Australia site in Lithgow, New South Wales which employs around 130 Australians. Furthermore, the CEO of Thales has now publicly confirmed that if Thales wins the future rifle contract for the Australian Defence Force it will continue manufacturing rifles at Lithgow.

The Lithgow Small Arms Factory has been supporting the Australian Defence Force for over a century and they and the broader Lithgow community need certainty about the future of manufacturing in Lithgow, particularly during these tough economic times. Nioa now needs to put its cards on the table. The community of Lithgow is entitled to an answer. I also have a message for Nioa: don’t mess with Lithgow!

√ $64.3 million for the Forty Bends road upgrade √ $55.62 million for the Hartley Valley road upgrade √ $8.28 Lithgow Aged Care Expansion √ $8 million to investigate fast rail for the Central West √ $2 million to Lithgow through the Drought Communities Program √ $1.5 million towards Stage 1 of the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway project √ $1.135 million for Lithgow Blast Furnace

That just leaves Nioa to publicly state their position with respect to the future of local arms manufacturing and the Small Arms Factory in Lithgow. Nioa and Thales are believed to be competing for the rifle component of a recent Department of Defence tender for the provision a wide array of defence equipment. I will personally oppose and campaign against any company that does not categorically and publicly confirm that, if they win the contract, they will be manufacturing in Lithgow.

√ $6,375 for the Portland District Motor Club

√ $1.24 million for the extension of Three Tree Lodge √ $1.06 million for headspace services in Lithgow Image of the Enhanced F88 rifle from army.gov.au

BUSHFIRE ROYAL COMMISSION The Bushfire Royal Commission is well into it’s second block of hearings. Recently, the Commission has been addressing the potential extra challenges that could exist with firefighting during the COVID-19 pandemic, not least of which maybe difficulties in obtaining international or even interstate assistance. I have made a submission to the Royal Commission which can be viewed here: www.naturaldisaster. royalcommission.gov.au/submissions/read-public-submissions/published-submissions I will also be continuing to monitor the hearings. You can follow along too at: www.naturaldisaster.royalcommission.gov.au

√ $480,000 towards renovations and upgrades at the Wallerawang Community & Sports Club √ $300,000 for the Wallerawang Holistic Wellness Centre √ $201,000 for the Pipers Flat and Range Road upgrade at Wallerawang √ $60,000 for upgrades at Marjorie Jackson Oval √ $38,000 for the Lithgow Information and Neighbourhood Centre

Deadpool 2, Sunday 19th July at 9:00pm on Prime7 While this one might not be for everyone, it is however a ridiculously funny action flick starring Hollywood hunk Ryan Reynolds. This sequel of the 2016 hit, is certainly part of the Marvel universe - albeit slightly to the left though with its very graphic action sequences and potty-mouth humour. Still - there is something undeniably endearing to this iconic franchise. After losing Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), the love of his life, 4th-wall breaking mercenary Wade Wilson aka Deadpool (Reynolds) must assemble a team and protect a young, full-figured mutant Russell Collins aka Firefist (Julian Dennison) from Cable (Josh Brolin), a no-nonsense, dangerous cyborg from the future, and must also learn the most important lesson of all: to be part of a family again.

CELEBRATION FOR KAY MARTIN Story and Photo Supplied

Wallerawang/Lidsdale CWA had an early celebration with Kay Martin who will turn 90 years young next week.

President Margaret Henning presented Kay with a beautiful potted Cyclamen and for something different a Cheese Cake. Over Kay’s 30 years as a member of CWA she has held many positions within the group, her main passion being International Officer where she would organise Wallerawang School Children, with their teachers, to study a certain country each year then invite parents and CWA members to view their projects they had studied.

PAD THAI WITH A TWIST The addition of bacon to this recipe adds a fresh take to the traditional pad Thai.

TAFE NSW Tourism and Hospitality Teacher Robyn Ward said you’ll be impressed by the flavours in this perfect mid-week meal.

“It’s a lighter version of the popular Thai noodle dish and only calls for a few ingredients, which are mostly staples in your pantry. “While everyone still has some more time on their side, now is the perfect time to consider learning new cooking skills at TAFE NSW.”

INGREDIENTS 150g dried rice noodles 2 tbsp vegetable oil 4 rashers streaky bacon, finely chopped 4 spring onions, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tbsp fresh ginger, coarsely grated 3 eggs, lightly whisked with a little salt and ground black pepper 1 cup beansprouts or finely shredded cabbage 1 tbsp sesame oil 2 tsp soy sauce 2 tsp sugar ½ cup coarsely chopped roasted peanuts ¼ cup coriander leaves Hoisin sauce or siracha sauce, to serve Lime cheeks, to serve (optional)

20

METHOD

Visit tafensw.edu. au or phone 131 601 for more information about the range of courses available in semester 2 at TAFE NSW.

1. Cook or soak rice noodles according to packet instructions, drain, and rinse under cold water before setting aside. 2. Heat oil in a wok or large frypan over medium-high heat. Add bacon and cook until starting to crisp. Add spring onions, garlic and ginger and cook until they smell aromatic (30-40 seconds). 3. Add eggs, stirring to break up as they set. Add drained noodles, beansprouts or cabbage, sesame oil, soy sauce, sugar, most of the peanuts and most of the coriander. 4. Stir-fry for about a minute, then transfer to a serving platter and garnish with the remaining peanuts and coriander. Serve with a drizzle of either hoisin or sriracha sauce and a squeeze of lime juice, if desired.

BATHURST STROKE SURVIVOR HELPS OTHERS FIND THEIR ‘NEW NORMAL’ Local Bathurst woman Sue Bowden is determined to make life after stroke easier for fellow stroke survivors of working age.

The 50 year old has been selected to join the Lived Experience Working Group, as part of the Stroke Foundation Young Stroke Project. The project is funded by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). It will help working-age Australians (18-65) find their ‘new normal’ after stroke by determining their unique needs and developing information and resources to better meet those needs. Sue said she was thrilled to be part of the group guiding this innovative and much needed project. “I was 22 when I had a stroke. Initially, I was unable walk, talk or eat and I had to communicate by using my eyes,” Sue explained. “At the time, there was no information about stroke given to me or my husband which included any detail about what I may have been experiencing, what to do and where to find support. “There was a disconnect from what I needed and what was offered.” Like Sue, many younger stroke survivors have much of their lives ahead of them, including managing careers, family, roles in the community and financial responsibilities. Stroke is an additional complexity. Stroke Foundation National Manager StrokeConnect Jude Czerenkowski said there was currently little age-appropriate information available for younger stroke survivors. “Almost 90 percent of younger stroke survivors have specific needs relevant to their stage of life, they are telling us these needs are not being met,’’ Ms Czerenkowski said. “Stroke Foundation’s Young Stroke Project will aim to close those gaps and give younger people with stroke tools to empower them to live well.

“Information will be available when, where and how it is needed – including videos, podcasts and blogs.” The Lived Experience Working Group would be help guide the project, including facilitating engagement with the wider community, developing project themes and content. Sue said was determined to ensure fellow stroke survivors did not feel alone in their recovery and were able to navigate the health system effectively. “This could be achieved through innovative ideas to educate, reach and influence how stroke is seen and heard by the community,” she said. The Stroke Foundation is seeking stroke survivors of working age, their partners, families and friends along with health professionals and researchers to be involved in the Young Stroke Project. Participants can help determine needs and provide feedback on a range of topics including study and employment, relationships and parenting, recreation and self-care, grief and acceptance and navigating the health system. To find out more about the project or to register your interest visit: https://youngstrokeproject.org.au/ Stroke Foundation’s Young Stroke Project builds on the Stroke Foundation’s recovery website, EnableMe and telephone service StrokeLine (1800 787 653).

Working age stroke statistics

• Around 20 strokes a day impact Australians under the age of 65. • 142,000 stroke survivors are of working age. • 96 percent of young stroke survivors report having ongoing needs after their stroke. • 88 percent of young stroke survivors report unmet needs across health, everyday living, leisure activities, employment and finance – greater than older stroke survivors.

Stroke Foundation’s Lived Experience Working Group member and stroke survivor Sue Bowden.

STATEWIDE SEARCH FOR YEAR 6 NSW STUDENT TO BE FRED HOLLOWS’ JUNIOR AMBASSADOR The Fred Hollows Foundation is calling for nominations for the Fred Hollows Humanity Award, which recognises Year 6 students who demonstrate compassion, integrity and kindness towards others.

“One blanket was donated to the children’s ward and another to the cancer centre, where the girls met the recipient of their large blanket in person. “The 24-year-old cancer patient was emotional and said she would never forget this moment. These two live every day with others in mind.” All nominees will receive a certificate and be recognised at a virtual presentation ceremony later in the year.

Parents, teachers, principals and community members around the country can nominate a child in Year 6 who has made a difference at www.hollows.org/ fredhollowshumanityaward before 11.59pm, Friday 11 September. One Junior Ambassador from each state and territory will be selected. Honouring children for their kindness, compassion and integrity is more relevant than ever in 2020, which has underscored the importance of these values. “Fred used to say the basic attribute of mankind is to look after each other,” said Gabi Hollows, Founding Director of The Fred Hollows Foundation. “He would be so proud to know the Fred Hollows Humanity Award is recognising students who are demonstrating this belief in their own lives. “To see students honouring these words by showing compassion, kindness and integrity during such a challenging year is incredibly inspiring. “I urge people to nominate a Year 6 student for the Humanity Award and together we can continue to help spread compassion and kindness during this trying time.” Two students recognised at last year’s ceremony were Kate Longley and Kate Dallinger, of St Patricks Parish School, Albury. The girls were nominated for their altruistic and compassionate nature. “These ladies, off their own merit, raised money by baking rainbow biscuits and then using the funds raised to make blankets for our local hospital,” teacher Jo Good said.

A Junior Ambassador from NSW will be recognised and will be able to extend their humanity by allocating $5,000, donated by the award’s charity partner Specsavers, to one of The Foundation’s programs to end avoidable blindness. Since 2012, the Fred Hollows Humanity Award has recognised more than 1,500 students who follow in Fred’s footsteps by making a positive difference in the lives of others.

TOUGH NEW COVID-19 COMPLIANCE MEASURES FOR PUBS

New rules will be introduced to pubs across NSW that will limit group bookings to a maximum of 10 people and cap the number of customers inside a venue to 300 people following a concerning rise in COVID-19 cases. Tough new compliance measures will also see dedicated Hygiene Marshalls patrol venues to keep customers safe and ensure the mandatory implementation of a COVID-Safe plan. The new measures, agreed to by the NSW Australian Hotels Association, will come into force at 12:01am Friday, 17 July. We are at a crucial stage of the pandemic in NSW – we want venues strictly implementing their COVID-Safe plans and customers abiding by the rules of the venue they are in. It is critical people remember when they are at a venue they remain seated. This reduces the risk of transmission. These new measures strike the right balance in protecting the health and safety of the people of NSW and ensuring venues remain operational. There will be random inspections and there will be zero tolerance for non- compliance.

REMINDER TO DRIVE SAFELY THIS SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Motorists are being reminded to drive safely and monitor road conditions these school holidays after a worrying rise in crashes over the last week. There has been 12 fatal crashes since the start of the school holidays, which had tragically resulted in the deaths of 14 people. Last year there were 16 fatal crashes and 16 people killed over the entire July school holiday period. Frighteningly this means that with still a few days to go, this year NSW has almost recorded as many fatalities as last year’s entire July holiday period. School holidays are meant to be a time of fun with family and friends - instead 14 people have lost their lives. Every life lost on our roads is a tragedy and has a devastating ripple effect on local communities.

TIME TO CELEBRATE OUR RURAL WOMEN VOLUNTEERS

Make no mistake, volunteers are heroes in the bush and we need you to tell us about the incredible women in your community and the stories of their tireless work and achievements. In times of drought, devastating bushfires and now the COVID-19

pandemic, female volunteers have made invaluable contributions and the annual Hidden Treasures Honour Roll celebrates that. Nominations for the 2020 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll have officially opened, giving members of rural and regional communities a chance to recognise the outstanding achievements of local female volunteers. Women and girls play a pivotal role in our regions all year round, with many generously donating their time to make life better for others. The Honour Roll is a fantastic way of recognising the incredible impact they have and to thank them for their selfless contributions. So many volunteers have stood tall during these testing times over the last twelve months and it’s important to recognise their selfless contribution and their countless hours of service. To nominate a Hidden Treasures volunteer, complete a nomination online: www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/about-us/ rural-support/rural-womens-network/hidden-treasures or download a nomination form. Nominations close on 24 July 2020. NEW RULES: You can still enjoy a visit to the pub, but with a maximum of 10 people on a table. Paul Toole MP and Deputy Premier John Barilaro at the Knickerbocker Hotel.

IT’S TIME FOR KICK OFF!

The much-anticipated start to the Midwest rugby league season begins tomorrow, with number of memorable moments at a number of the games. Story and Photo By John Fitzgerald

Lithgow Bears are at home to Oberon, CSU play their grand final re-match with Orange Barbarians, and Kandos Waratahs line up against new club Cargo. After 99 years of rugby league in Kandos, the 2020 Kandos team will this week achieve a couple of milestones when they play their first game of the Midwest Rugby

League’s flagship competition, the Wallerawang Landscaping Cup. Cargo is the venue, against former Woodbridge Cup team Cargo Blue Heelers. Kandos Waratahs have Kevin Large in their side, a fourth-generation Kandos player, son of Chris Large from the 1980s. Also in the Kandos side are father/son duo Glenn Osgood, to play their first game together. Another new club, Orange Warriors have the bye this week, but alto have a father and son to play alongside each other for the first time, Chris Jones and Tyren Dixon. Cargo, Oberon and the Orange Warriors are all unknown quantities in the Wallerawang Landscaping Cup, but they will undoubtedly bring a vibrance to the competition that was missing last season, and their strength will soon be made known after the first couple of games.

CSU’s Jacob Watkin and Billy Dickinson celebrate their club’s 2019 success

community "THOUGHT OF THE WEEK" By Roz Townsend

It’s time for THAT conversation We are certainly living in challenging times right now with Covid-19. As a funeral celebrant, may I strongly suggest that it is time to consider THAT conversation. You know, the one where you talk to the people around you about your end-of-life wishes. Actually, it would make more sense if everyone had this conversation at 18 or 21 years of age as part of their movement into adulthood rather than wait until a threat arises. Most of us would like to know the details of when and how we will die – although we may be reluctant to admit it. The only details and choices we do have in death are how we will prepare for its inevitability. Dear reader there are some important questions to consider. The questions are best considered when you are of sound mind and healthy rather than when emotions and ill health might dominate. You need to consider that those around you will be overwhelmed in grief and the last thing they need is a mountain of paperwork to deal with on your demise. The situation is made even worse if they don’t know what your wishes are. It’s crazy to think that people put more time into planning their holidays than their end of life. Here are just some of the key things to act on: • Write a will or update the one you have, let others know your wishes for your assets and responsibilities. If you don’t have one, the government and courts will have to deal with it. • Have you nominated a power of attorney to act on your behalf if needed? • Write a living will – let others know what you want to have happen in case you become incapacitated. What medical care would you want? Would you wish for your organs to be donated? • What type of funeral would you want? Would you prefer to be buried or cremated? The internet, your local funeral director and solicitor can help you with all of this. The key point is to act now on these issues and share the important information with those who need to know.
