The Dare County GIS website is not like any other GIS website we’ve seen— the site actually makes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) maps fun to research and explore. Of course, all the important stuff that’s expected is there. That’s in the Parcel Data Map—property value, tax information, who owns what and for how long. And, in almost every case there is a picture of the property as well.

The information on the properties is straightforward, easy to follow and interesting. Click on a beachfront property, especially in Nags Head, and the path to how the Outer Banks grew from a smattering of beach cottages to one of the most popular tourist destination on the East Coast becomes pretty clear.
There are homes along the Nags Head beachfront that date to the 1880s; a few in the 1920s and 1930s, and in every decade right up to present time more homes and buildings appear.
The practical information doesn’t stop there.

The Flood Zone Swipe Map may have some of the most important information that property owners can use. When new flood risk assessments were established for Dare County by FEMA in 2020 there was some controversy surrounding it,
There’s a lot more useful data on the site. The OBX Trash Map, as an example, lets property owners and guests know what days are trash days for an address. It’s one of the most popular maps in the summer according to the GIS folks.
The Dare County Community Map may be the most practical map on the site. Enter a home address when prompted and distances to health services, police and fire stations are given when clicking on the icons along the left side. For EV car owners, there’s even a link to a website with charging station locations.
Dare County, it seems, has had longer than any other county in the state to get their GIS reporting right. The county began mapping properties with GIS beginning in 1995 and when they put the information online, they were the first in North Carolina. Much of that was to help Hatters Island residents who, if they needed property information, had, to drive to Manteo, which could be up to a two-and-a-half hour round trip—and that didn’t include the time to research a property.
The site was always filled with practical information, and the information that users have come to expect from any government GIS website is still very much there, but beginning in 2019 GIS Specialist Kristin Stilson with the blessing of her supervisor Greg Ball started having some fun.
2019 was when the first map came out that was simply fun to explore. Entitled the Dare County Look Back Map, it features side-by-side aerial imagery of Dare County in 1996 and 2019 showing how much development has occurred between those years.
Although the map was not interactive, it was a precursor of what was to follow.
The first interactive map, the 150th Anniversary Timeline Map, gives a great overview of the history of the county. At the bottom of the page is a timeline. Click on a date and an information box pops up and the map moves to the location of the event. There are also blue dots indicating the location of the timeline events. Click on the blue dot, and the information box appears and the cursor on the timeline adjusts.
For the past few years in mid-November in conjunction with GIS Day—November 15 this year—a new interactive map appears. The first was the OBX Shipwrecks Map. The page highlights a number of shipwrecks that have happened in Outer
Banks waters, although with best estimates of the total number of shipwrecks in local waters ranging into the thousands, it’s a snapshot of history.
That was followed by two of our favorite maps.
The 2021 Outer Banks Trivia Map gives users a chance to “…test your knowledge of Dare County with this trivia map…” with easy or hard questions.
A hard question: “Which Lifesaving Station was the first US Lifesaving Station in North Carolina?”
Answer correctly and the map shifts to the location and some additional information.
Last year, the OBX Days Gone By Map took visitors around the Outer Banks to iconic businesses that no longer exist. This is where the mystery of the miniature golf castle in the Jockey’s Ridge sand is explained. Or the story of the Nags Head Casino, a legendary dance hall that brought some of the biggest names in music to the Outer Banks from the 1930s through the 1970s is told. Quagmire’s is part of the trip back in time as well. The food was good, the drinks ok, but the outdoor deck overlooking the Kill Devil Hills beach was spectacular.
Visitors may find the Dare County Recreation Map invaluable. Shower and restroom facilities along the beach are noted; playgrounds, important information to have for parents with toddlers are shown; there’s even an icon that when selected shows all the trails, multi-use paths and boardwalks in the Dare County. There are a lot.
An easy question would be, ”In 1903, two brothers changed the world forever, where did they do this?”
Finally, we don’t want to forget the Duck Blind Map. For hunters it’s invaluable—and it gives a window into the extraordinary history of the area, perhaps a different and interesting way to explore the Outer Banks.
