A

t the time of writing this (14th February – yes, I know I should be enjoying a candle-lit dinner, albeit at home, but press deadlines wait for no one) we are still in lockdown. However, the R number is now below the magic 1 and there is talk of all children returning to school on 8th March, followed by easing of restrictions.

This being the case, hopefully all our local businesses – including shops, pubs and leisure centres – will be able to reopen soon.

We might then begin to feel almost normal again. Fingers crossed!

Until then, stay safe!

Art Club Competition

e have pleasure announcing winners of the February Art Club children’s competition, launched in January by Billingshurst Community Partnership and Village Tweet.

Each month there will be a prize for each of the two age groups: 5-9 years wins a £10 Amazon voucher, 1014 years a £15 Amazon voucher.

You will remember February’s theme was Winter Fun. The winner in the 5-9-year-old category is Patrick Barry (8) for his entry, ‘Snow and Sleighs’ (left). The winner in the 10-14-year-old category is Joel Caballero (10) for his entry, ‘Sledging’ (right). Well done Patrick and Joel and thank you to all the other children who entered.

The theme for March’s competition is A view from my Window, very apt for lockdown!

E-mail a good quality photo of the artwork to Village Tweet (editor@villagetweet.co.uk) with the words ‘Art Club March’ in the e-mail subject box by 7th March with the artist’s name, age, picture title and an e-mail address by which they can be contacted.

The artwork can be in any medium: paint, pastels, embroidery, collage, charcoal, pen & ink pencils (black or coloured), felt pens, etc.

The winning entries will be published in next month’s Village Tweet and the judges’ decisions will be final. Prize vouchers will be sent via e-mail after the winners are announced.

A view from my Window

Local teacher supports young genocide survivors with vibrant lockdown art very day, throughout 2020 and lockdown, country filled with overwhelmingly positive

David Hart, former Weald School teacher and education adviser, created a small (A5 or A4) drawing or painting. His mission? To sell them for £10 each to raise vital funds for Rwandan charity Acts of Gratitude (AOG) which trains and supports young survivors of the 1994 genocide in setting up social enterprises.

David volunteered in Rwanda – where the average earnings are below £1 a day – for six months to help set up AOG’s social enterprise training programme.

The programme, now supported by the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, is responsible for training 200 social entrepreneurs who have created 1,000 jobs in a country affected by high youth unemployment. The charity is dedicated to helping young people start businesses that will create 10,000 more. And David is determined to help them on their way.

“It was an incredible privilege for me to help develop and deliver the first Acts of Gratitude social enterprise training course alongside skilled Rwandan partners. I am awestruck by this beautiful,

people who continue to overcome unimaginable past suffering and hardship. Their creativity, hard work and dedication is behind every piece of art I created in 2020.”

Young people given the courage and support by AOG to set up their own businesses include pharmacists, coffee farmers and clothes designers.

David has achieved a massive £3,500 in sales and donations since his online gallery was launched in January 2021 and has shipped his £10 artwork all over the world.

“It was a great focus for me during our first lockdown and has really been wonderful bright spot during this second one. The feedback has been so positive, and it’s been heartwarming connecting with friends old and new.

Mother’s Day… My perspective

M

y mother left home when I was seven. It always struck me as particularly cruel that teachers insisted we made Mother's Day cards. I pointed out once that my mother had left us. “Do you know her address?” teacher asked. When I nodded she told me I could post it. The irony of posting a card to ‘The World’s Best Mother’ notable mainly by her absence seemed lost on Miss Marriot.

A few years ago my friend’s mother died from bowel cancer, and she said she would punch the next shop assistant who enquired whether she needed a Mother’s Day card.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Mother’s Day is a lovely tradition but many of us may not realise that Mother’s Day is an emotional time of year for those who have lost their mother, those who can’t conceive, or those who have miscarried or lost a child.

Perhaps Mother’s Day needs a make-over.

Currently it seems to be about wish-lists, hints to spouses about booking the perfect restaurant and a barrage of adverts featuring the perfect nuclear family.

Our children – and maybe the rest of us – need to understand that Mother’s Day isn’t about spending lots of money or being pressured into meeting crazy expectations.

In the UK it originated when children, mainly daughters (often as young as ten), who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and family. This grew from the centuries-old tradition of people to returning to their home or ‘mother’ church once a year. This return grew into an occasion for family reunions.

As there is no tradition of gift-giving on Mother’s Day we are free to invent our own variation and I think it’s the perfect chance to inspire kindness, compassion and giving of time rather than possessions.

I would love to see an ‘alternative’ Mother’s Day focussed on less material things. I want to talk to my children about what Motherhood means to me and what having a mother means to them.

I want all of us to think about the people around us, at school, or work, in our social circle and community who might be having a hard time in the midst of Mother’s Day celebrations, made all the harder this year with COVID-19 restrictions.

How can we reach out and share a little kindness or hope? With a card? A note? A phone call?

A few years ago my children and I chose to sponsor a girl at an orphanage in Uganda. It gives us pleasure to know that someone who has no mother of her own is receiving care and education.

This year my friend and her children made a food parcel for their local food bank and donated it in her mother’s name. Her mother volunteered at a foodbank before she became ill so this seemed a fitting way to remember her.

If you are struggling with Mother’s Day this year, please know that you are not alone. Reach out and talk to a friend; look for others with whom to share.

Be kind to yourself, and if there is no-one you feel you can share your thoughts with consider starting with you and reach out to others who might need support.

Mother’s Day is on 14th March.

Classic Steak and Ale Pie METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 170°C or 150°C fan / gas mark 3.

2. Place the seasoned flour into a large plastic bag.

Add the beef in small batches and shake thoroughly to coat evenly. Reserve the floured pieces to a plate.

Heat a generous chunk of lard or dripping a large frying pan over a high heat. Brown the beef pieces in small batches, transferring them to an ovenproof casserole dish as you go.

3. Reduce the heat a little and add the chopped bacon or lardons and the onions to the pan. Cook until the bacon fat begins to render, and the onions are brown on all sides, then add into the casserole.

4. Pour a small amount of the beer into the pan and bring to a simmer, scraping the bottom to incorporate all the flavoured meat scraps and flour. Pour this into the casserole too, then pour in the rest of the ale, and add the stock, herbs, sugar, vinegar, and cocoa (or chocolate squares) and bring to a simmer.

5. Cover, and place into the oven for about 2 hours, then uncover and cook, stirring occasionally, for another 1½ -2 hours (depends on your oven), until the meat is tender. Set on one side to cool then transfer to a pie dish.

6. To make the pastry place the flour, baking powder and mustard powder in a bowl with ½ tsp salt. Stir in the suet, and then add just enough iced water to bring it together into a dough. Wrap in cling film and refrigerate for an hour or so.

7. Preheat the oven to 190°C / 170°C (fan) / Gas mark 5.

8. Roll out the pastry on a floured surface to about 1cm thick. Place over the filled pie dish, sealing the edges tightly. Cut vent slits to allow the steam to escape. Brush with beaten egg or milk and then bake for 45-50 minutes until golden.

Pie Filling Lard or dripping (you can use sunflower oil) 700g boneless beef shin – cut into mouth size chunks 25g plain flour, seasoned 200g smoked bacon (diced) or lardons 225g whole baby onions 400ml sweet dark brown ale (Theakston’s Old Peculier works well!)

400ml beef stock 1 tsp dried thyme 1 bay leaf 1 tbsp dark muscovado sugar 1 tsp red wine vinegar 1 tsp cocoa or 1-2 squares of very dark (80%+) chocolate For the pastry 400g plain flour, plus extra for rolling 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp mustard powder (optional) ½ tsp salt 175g suet Iced water A little milk or egg, to glaze

omorrow will be a good day” was one of the messages Captain Sir Tom Moore left us in his legacy of example and resilience. In the challenging and arduous months of pandemic life many have found that hope can keep us company. In fact, for many hope has a strength and persistence that has indeed been a surprise in spite of everything.

Those of us who have found in nature a real tonic and source of cheer will have found the arrival of brave spring exciting and refreshing. Those first snowdrops and shoots of life breaking through.

Bulbs that were planted long ago and hold life when there is nothing to see on the surface. I wonder what spring flower arriving gives you the most joy? Perhaps even as you read this there is a bunch of bright daffodils on your kitchen windowsill. If you are a dog-walker who enjoys Billi woods, those amazing bluebells will be waiting to give your senses a boost as spring deepens.

Hope can be found in so much. The ‘good

news’ stories from the radio, television and newspapers. Remember the excitement when the vaccines were ready, and we had our ‘light at the end of the tunnel’? Hope is no lightweight and can be found in the hearts of many who have suffered deeply. It is not a blind pretence that everything is alright but a deep reassurance that light beats dark.

Easter offers the deepest of hope for mankind. When all seemed darkness and defeat the power of Christ’s resurrection made all right again. Death had been defeated and in the midst of suffering hope and life are forever present. The existence of hope is a sign of God’s presence amongst us.

As colourful buds start to appear with the promise of new life in what was once a bleak and barren landscape, so too we are pushing through and looking forward to what God is going to do.

If you don’t know us, we are Billingshurst Family Church! We usually meet each Sunday in the Community Centre but like most everyone else we are currently ‘working from home’. Thank goodness for Zoom meetings and social media! We are still meeting, and in some ways being online has made it easier for people to come and visit us as they can anonymously follow us on Facebook or YouTube! We’d love to invite you to check us out too, contact us for how to login if you fancy joining our live zoom every Sun at 10am, or every Sunday at 11.15 we’ll be staying on zoom to hang out and have coffee and chat.

There is always something going on at BFC, from money management courses with CAP (see ad opposite) to the Parenting Course (a lifeline at this time of homeschooling), as well as the Alpha Course and Marriage Course.

You are probably already familiar with folk from BFC, we are regular local residents, you’ll usually see us working at our local schools, shops, running Rainbow Toddlers, hosting school quizzes etc. We can’t wait to get back to seeing you all in person but until then, come and say hi, we’d love to catch up.

Eat a good quality tomato pasta sauce!

Simple tomato pasta sauce is loaded with potassium which aids lowering of blood pressure.

Floss!

Most people don’t know that your oral health has an effect on arterial health so make sure those pearly whites stay clean and flossed.

Limit saturated fat and avoid trans fats Try to keep saturated fat below 20g per day. Both saturated fat and trans fats (found in many processed foods) lead to inflammation of the arteries.

Read labels and avoid foods which list sugar as one of the first five ingredients In particular don’t be fooled by foods which claim to be ‘low fat’ because often they contain extra sugar instead. Healthy fats such as olive oil are better than empty sugar calories.

Drink wine But not too much! It’s a slightly bizarre (but consistent scientific truth) that teetotal folk have a higher risk of heart disease than those who drink in moderation. But a glass of red wine occasionally is very different to binge drinking once a week so be careful with this tip.

Eat a rainbow of fruit and veg Five to nine servings a day will help to keep your heart in tip-top condition. It may sound a lot but if you add chopped veg to pie fillings and casseroles and eat fruit at breakfast and salad stuff for snacks it all adds up.

Those are the scary statistics but what can you do to improve the health of your heart?

Below are the top tips according to leading cardiologists.

Walk 30 minutes every day, no matter what!

A half-hour walk every day decreases an individual’s chances of a heart attack by 30%. If you think you’ll skip days find a walking buddy and hold each other accountable.

Find out your blood pressure and take steps to bring it down Your blood pressure may be a more important factor than your cholesterol! If the doctor prescribes medication take it, but you can also take steps to lower it yourself and maybe reduce the need for medication. The best ways are to exercise and lose some belly fat. Individuals with high levels of fat in the abdominal cavity (belly fat) and around their abdominal organs are more likely to develop high blood pressure because this fat interferes with the function of the kidneys, which regulate the blood pressure.

Know what your HDL number is and then do what you can to raise it to 1.3 mmol/l In women especially it seems that a higher HDL (good cholesterol) number is more important than a low LDL (bad cholesterol) number. Eat about 25g of raw, fresh, unsalted nuts per day – especially walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, pistachios and almonds. Nuts are packed with omega 3 oils, raise levels of HDL good cholesterol, decrease inflammation and have a good effect

A Good Read March’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – Stieg Larsson First published in English just over a decade ago this Swedish thriller – the first of a trilogy – was a huge hit. It was a time when Nordic Noir was just starting to take off in this country and remains a classic of the genre. So I was interested to see if it stood up to a re-read 12 years later, and it certainly does.

Mikael Blomkvist is an investigative journalist but a recent article about the wealthy Swedish financier Wennerstrom has landed him with a two-month prison sentence for libel.

But while waiting for his sentence to begin Blomkvist receives an unusual job offer from millionaire industrialist Henrik Vanger. He wants Blomkvist to investigate the murder of his greatniece, Harriet, forty years earlier. He takes the job, moving to the island where the Vangers live. He ends up turning to computer hacker Lisbeth Slanader for help, a young woman who has no tolerance for others, society, or the law.

What appears to be a simple thriller on the surface offers so much more. From corruption in Swedish society to attitudes towards women in Sweden, this evocative novel is satisfying, if violent. As a reader you feel part of the action as you move with the characters from Sweden to Hebdy Island. Here, more than in many other

novels, the geography of Sweden feels like a character in its own right and the mood of the characters and the pace itself cleverly switches as we move from one to the other. For me, this was the most satisfying part of this exemplar of the Nordic Noir genre.

The Werepuppy – Jacqueline Wilson Mickey has four sisters, and three of them are older than him. He doesn’t get on with them and is frequently teased. Then, one night his parents go out, leaving the three older girls, Meryl, Mandy, and Mona, in charge. Delighted to have the house to themselves the girls decide to watch Savage Snarl, a scary werewolf movie. And it really IS scary. Even the older girls think so.

But for Mickey it has a lasting effect: he becomes scared of dogs. Unsure what to do, his mum decides that the only real solution is to buy Mickey a puppy of his own!

Dragged to the dog rescue home Mickey would rather be anywhere else until he encounters one puppy who bites his younger sister’s finger.

Could this be Mickey’s very own werewolf – or werepuppy!

Wolfie, as he is called, is no ordinary puppy and turns out to be the best pet that any boy could ask for!

“I was delighted to come back and help”

H

elen Pointer is part of a crucial team of volunteers at St Catherine’s Hospice who have been doing visitor screening checks so patients on the ward can still safely see their essential visitors at a time it matters most. Here, Helen shares more about her experience volunteering with the local charity.

“I’ve been volunteering doing visitor temperature checks and screening at the hospice on Wednesday afternoons. I welcome each visitor and invite them to wash their hands before proceeding with a temperature check and asking a series of questions regarding their health, COVID-19 symptoms, contact with anyone isolating, or a journey from an area in lockdown. If all the above is clear and negative I provide them with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and guide them towards the room for their loved one.

“After months away, it’s been so good to come back to the hospice and connect with St Catherine’s and everyone here. In this role, there’s vital support from the hospice receptionists, and they’ve been absolutely brilliant. They’ve given all the screening volunteers valued guidance and help through ongoing changes. They’re constantly busy but always find the time to support us.

The catering team at the hospice have really looked after us too, offering us cups of tea and cake even though we’re sat separately to others.

“I really missed the camaraderie of being around people during the first lockdown, and it was palpable coming back to volunteer at the hospice after spending so much time on my own in isolation.

“Around this time last year I was very poorly with coronavirus myself. I had it at the same time as Boris and the Prince of Wales! But I coped far better than I ever would have imagined. The isolation increased my awareness and the importance of human connection.

“I’m used to interacting with hospice patients from my time in my normal volunteer role, pre-COVID-19, as an artist drawing ‘bucket list’ caricature portraits. I can’t do them in the usual way at the moment because of COVID-19 but I’m still doing them for patients and relatives via Zoom. I even do some drawings in between visitors. In the past I’ve been fortunate to sit with many patients at St Catherine’s and draw them and their families. It’s a real joy. Now, I’m drawing caricature portraits with patients where we write a list of all the things they have achieved during their lifetime and draw that in – almost like a reverse bucket list.

“It’s a privilege to be part of this crucial time for the visitors to St Catherine’s and instead of meeting just patients as I did before, I’m meeting their families now.

During the time people are visiting the hospice, I develop quite a connection with them, and the families and visitors I meet are so inspiring. They all have an incredible outlook. To be there at the time when they need support the most and offer virtual hugs through words and body language is fulfilling.

“Visitors talk to us as we screen them, and we’re always there to listen. I treasure this time as a rapport

develops over the weeks, and it’s all about judging what I can offer someone in the present climate. There’s been a young man staying at the hospice recently and his wife and young children often visit. I heard one of the young children ask their Mum, ‘Will Daddy wake up?’ It’s so difficult, but I do whatever I can to make things easier. I drew a happy, little face on one of the masks for the child.

“I always try to make the screening process as easy as I can for people. We have a chat about the crazy world we’re in at the moment, and how they’re coping. I demonstrate the PPE gently as first-time visitors can be distracted, emotional and overwhelmed by something new and invasive.

“It’s about dealing with things realistically and helping people to understand the changes. We get a lot of questions, but everyone appreciates what we’re doing to keep them safe.

“I find not being able to hug people difficult though, especially when they’re upset. It’s difficult that I have to stand back, instead of comfort, but I can still listen to people and empathise. People always rally and find the strength to pull themselves together and go back into the wards to the person they love.

“They’re not at peace – they’re having an excruciating wait for the inevitable. They know they can’t put off what’s coming, but they still come back day after day, sometimes week after week, because they know that the time with their loved one is so precious. I often wonder how on earth they remain so buoyant and positive for the patient. It must be so hard.

“After someone has passed away, people obviously react in different ways. There’s been the anticipation for such a long time, and sometimes, people have been visiting the hospice for months. Really, their life has been on hold.

“One week when I was on shift, a husband whose wife had died at the hospice, came back to do a drive through. He couldn’t come inside, but we stood in the car park socially distanced and talked. He felt he could come back to the hospice and be himself. Sometimes in the outside world, people avoid someone recently bereaved because they don’t know what to say, but at the hospice there’s an understanding and familiarity that’s comforting in the initial days and weeks.

“It’s been so positive helping in this role. My friends often ask me if it’s upsetting, and it can be. People do share their emotions and that can stay with me. I always listen, try to distract them for a few moments, and say something comforting.

“Volunteering at the hospice reminds me not to put anything off in my own life. I’m ticking off my bucket list.

And now, I don’t ever put off the words I should say more often – Thank you and I love you.”

“I’m proud of all the students I mentor”

M

onika is a nurse at St Catherine’s Hospice in Crawley. As well as working on the wards, she acts as a mentor to student nurses on placement at the hospice, helping to train the next generation. Here she shares her experiences and what she gains from mentoring.

“I was first inspired to work in a hospice when I was training as a nurse in Poland. We had a visit from a lady who worked in a Polish hospice, and I was really moved by the way she spoke about the care she gave patients; it was very personal and almost family like. She spoke about how she helped patients fulfil their wishes and I’ve never forgotten the story she told us about a lady whose dying wish was to buy a red dress. She had always wanted one.

Staff did a collection and brought her a red dress, which she ended up being buried in.

“Later, I came across some Polish books written by someone who founded a hospice, and as I was qualifying, I became more interested in working in palliative care.

“As well as working at St Catherine’s I do some shifts at a local hospital.”

“Misconceptions about hospices and the care we provide are prevalent there. It’s quite common for people to think hospices are all about people dying and a depressing place to work, but I always focus on what I can do for people, not what I can’t.

“It’s so important for students to spend time at St Catherine’s because when they’re here, they see hospices aren’t like they imagine. I’m passionate about raising awareness of hospices and their work and when you’re newly qualified you need to see what palliative care in this setting is like.

“Hospice care is very much about dignity in dying.”

“Working in a hospice you learn about symptom control and see the dignity and personalised care that people are given.

“Students can be at St Catherine’s Hospice from two weeks to two months and during their time with us, they work across all our hospice teams. I try to support them in all aspects of their learning as a lot of our students have other commitments alongside their studying.

“I put myself in a student’s shoes and think how would I like to be taught.”

“I like to make students think on their feet. To try and help them understand anatomy and physiology related to a specific condition, and I ask them to question themselves as they work: What does that particular patient need? What treatment would they suggest for them? That way, I teach them that routine can’t ever take over. Each person we care for is different so I remind them that they always need to think, What can I do? How can I do this? And I like it when they make their own corrections as they go.

“Students spend time working on the wards alongside me, but also spend time with our occupational therapists, physios, emotional, spiritual and welfare teams, and community nurses as well as with other nurses and nursing assistants.

“Mentoring is very much about teamwork.”

“It’s important to give students the chance to spend time with all of our teams so that they get a rounded learning opportunity and experience every part of our hospice.

“I like to teach people and pass on my knowledge. I enjoy making connections with students and I try to understand them individually. Everyone learns differently so I adapt my teaching style to meet each person’s needs, and give them protected time as it can be hard juggling their time when they’re here.

The hospice is an emotionally loaded environment so I’m there for students’ emotions too. I or another member of staff will always make time to have a conversation with a student who may be struggling – we’ve all been there. I find ways to help them the best I can. That could be taking them off the ward for a few hours or the whole day.

“You have to be aware that each person has different triggers.

Recent bereavement, for example. Once, I was working with a student who lost her father to a brain tumour. If they’re then caring for someone with a similar condition that can make things hard for them.

“Working at a hospice is different to working in other places.”

“It can sometimes be a challenging environment, so I’m always honest with students, but in a way that doesn’t discourage them. I pass on tips and advice. For example, lots of families have questions for us, so I tell students to explain to each family what they’re doing and show them their loved one’s drug charts so people understand why we’re doing what we’re doing. It’s understandable that some people are going to question the care we’re giving. Many of them have been looking after their loved one at home before they come to the hospice, and some of them find it hard to give up control over their care. Teaching students to do things like show people drugs charts also teaches them to protect themselves when they’re delivering care.

“Students needs your time.”

“In Poland when I was training, I had a very good, kind teacher and they were quite inspirational for me. I hope I’m the same for the students I teach here.

“Whenever I’m able to sign off a student I always get a feeling of achievement. I like thinking that someone may remember an experience I’ve shared with them when they go on in their career, like I remember the experience the lady shared in my training about her patient’s red dress.

“I’m always very proud of all the students I mentor” “They’re very brave, communicating with new patients and families, and taking on new challenges, some that they’ve never done before. I’ve had some lovely students and find mentoring them, getting them from A to B and seeing them learn very rewarding. It’s rewarding to see them get more confident and independent as they go.”

Cliff Griffin (RIP)

Goodbye & Thank you

The Council is very sad to report that former councillor Cliff Griffin recently passed away.

Cliff served as a local councillor for many years, both at parish and former Rural District level and was a well-known figure in Five Oaks and the wider area.

Cliff was a passionate and committed councillor, sometimes outspoken but much respected and admired by his fellow councillors, parish office staff and members of the community. Although Cliff was not a councillor in recent years, he kept in regular touch with council staff and would often visit the parish office. Cliff was a dedicated public servant who will be missed. The Council sends its sincere condolences to Cliff’s family.

The Council says goodbye and thank you to Jon Perks for the service he has offered the community since joining the Council back in 2017. Jon was a very active member of the Council and will be greatly missed, especially given his vast knowledge and experience especially with regards to public footpaths and rights of way. Jon also led the Neighbourhood Plan effort in recent years.

At the time of going to press, the vacancy has been publicised. Please keep an eye out on the council’s website or social media for updates.

Wheelie Bins on pavements The Parish Council has received complaints about wheelie bins being left on the roadside or blocking pavements and this can be particularly difficult for disabled residents and those with poor eyesight. It can also look unsightly and in windy conditions bins may get blown over causing even more obstructions. When bins are left to block

pavements it can force pedestrians to walk in the road. We would encourage all residents to return their bins to their properties or storage areas once they have been emptied and not leave them on the road or pavements for any longer than necessary.

Horsham District Council (HDC) Local Plan 2019-2036 This time last year, HDC commenced a review of the Local Plan which will be used to guide future development in the District.

HDC is now in the process of preparing the next stage in its Local Plan called a Regulation 19 document. Once agreed, hopefully during spring of this year, this document will be published for a formal ‘period of representation’ where comments can be made on HDC’s proposals. The Wild Roadshow evening with 2nd Billingshurst Guides’ first guest speaker on Zoom!

I

n one of our February meetings, Andrea from The Wild Roadshow met 2nd Billingshurst Guides over Zoom to show us her exotic animals.

We saw five different types of unusual animals: A Brazilian snake, bearded dragon, gecko, tarantula, and a millipede.

My favourite animals that she showed us were ‘Flame’ the flamecrested Gecko and ‘Rosie’, a Chile-Rose tarantula. Rosie is so called because she is from Chile and has a slight pinkish tint to the hairs on her back.

Alexandra (11), a fellow Guide, said, “It was fun to see all the unusual creatures and to learn about them”.

Andrea travels with her animals to different places so children can see her unique creatures and have the opportunity to learn about something new. For example, did you know that female

tarantulas generally live for about 25 years, but males rarely make their 5th birthday? I did not know that before the meeting.

We have kept persevering during lockdown, holding our meetings over Zoom and continuing to work together as a unit.

As part of Girlguiding, Guides are for 10-14year-old girls, who learn new skills, meet challenges, earn badges and have fun. And in a girl-only environment are given the space to develop their potential.

Down the Bowling Alley (Childhood memories of Hammonds Mill) My new school friend knocked for me to go with her to the ‘bowling alley’.

I’d never been to one but thought of finding giant mechanisms to reset the ninepins after spares and strikes, like in films on VHS. I was surprised when mum said yes, learned that playing till dusk was the rule for year-round going out after school.

I wore clean socks and pocketed a shiny twenty pence piece to spend.

Through a wooded twitten came an open glade at the foot of a steep bank by a decayed sail-free tower. It was striking and spare: a tree sprung from the bricks in the threadbare brambled branches that hid brown glass bottles. My socks got muddy in long grass.

There was nowhere to squander my coin only slot machines for childhood time where we spent wildly, toppling forward through dreams and games and awkward hurtling down that slope screaming symphonic swearwords on top of an upturned car bonnet.

Today just a small wooded slope remains beneath meandering landscaped lanes that gravel their way in neat striations. by the old windmill’s preserved foundations.

And finally a long-felt mystery is solved about how our bowling alley evolved: first named as neutral ground for skittles’ club fixtures between the high street’s rival pubs a century before we played as kings of that childhood castle, and outdoor pins.

Lockdown Three – Part Two

Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…

N

anny having finally received the main materials began the major project for Lockdown 3 (see photo from February). With the kids help, the old chicken house cum woodstore was moved out of the proposed area. Then, because it was cold the edging which was plastic had to be warmed so it didn’t snap. (Well it still snapped on several occasions – easily remedied by overlapping.) Over several cold days on hands and knees the edging was laid. Next was the ground cover. Again, a hands and knees job and some was laid. Not enough pegs so more ordered. The wind blew it about a bit.

Needed relaying.

It was in the laying of the ground cover that Nanny discovered two more problems to be overcome – blackberry in the corner of the chicken pen fence (and old blackberry runners running up the boundary fence which was also very wobbly) and the tyre for the tree was in the wrong place.

First things first. Move the tyre. It was full of compost; dig compost out; Izzie helped to move tyre – very heavy; groundcover slashed and compost put back. Much better Not bad, eh? Well, the placing. Ready for its tree.

A more major problem: remove the old blackberry. With Sara’s help and thick gloves it was stripped down and put in the fire pit. They tried to burn it. Not successful. They tried again and again.

or two on hands and knees with the electric foxproofing fence turned off, Nanny managed to clear the corner of chicken pen fence. The groundcover pegs arrived.

After a couple of days’ rest, and before the ground cover around the fire pit could be laid, Nanny had to burn the blackberry. Success at last and the groundcover was relaid with fancy pleating (thanks to sewing experience) around the fire pit. It was beginning to take shape.

Next was laying the bark.

Fortunately, Mole had some landscape bark in stock and Nanny bought two. Hardly enough. Six more were bought and Sam trundled them (100 litres each) over to the park area and spread each bag out over the area making it much more easily laid. The ground was very wet and so was the bark but it was beginning to look good. Two more bags were purchased and transported by Sam. The bark was laid.

Meantime Nanny had found an old fencepost in the hayshed clear out and Izzie cut it into three to put them around the fire pit. After planting the trees so very kindly given in 2019 by her hens like it. friend Barbara the project itself was completed. Nanny and the children were indeed vey proud of themselves.

But, as usual, projects are always an evolving event on that small farm near Billingshurst.

Mum is really pleased as she hates the dark nights, the cold and the wet, although the gin factory will be sad as mum seems to have got a taste for the stuff and the weather is her excuse! Personally I can’t wait as she may stop giving us baths. I don’t mind being dirty, not one jot, but she hates it and we have to be showered off and dried before we are allowed to settle down.

I’m perfectly happy to just wipe myself on a rug but, nope, mum freaks out and chucks us in a shower.

I’m still on a diet and no amount of whining seems to be getting me any extra food, Mav the idiot thinks it’s hilarious as he gets extra dinner and takes his time eating it just to rub it in.

Well, I managed to get my own back by burying his favourite tennis ball in the garden! I shall keep doing this until he has nothing. To add insult to injury Mav gets bigger chews than me too; I shall plan a revenge for that.

We have been to the beach more too, it’s quite exciting – we get to have a really good run, Mav really is an idiot and runs in all the water retrieving things. If mum thinks I’m doing that she can think again, if she throws something in the sea – she can go and get it! I have far more important things to do such as rolling on a dead fish; I mean they smell absolutely amazing don’t they – well, don’t they? Must be just us dogs then… We have to learn to share the beach with other people, there were lots of big grass munchers being ridden there at the weekend. We are good dogs – even if Mav is an idiot he comes back when called and we keep well away from the grass munchers as they do get frightened

easily. I think so many people are enjoying the beach at the moment because everywhere else is covered in mud!

I’m really hoping we can do those pub lunch things again this year. Mav has never been on one and doesn’t believe me when I say we have two glorious hours of walking and sniffing and then get a morsel or two when the humans have theirs. I really miss those days.

I overheard mum saying the other day that we will have something called a ‘staycation’ and said it’ll be great because the boys can come – I’m pretty sure that means us dogs! I can’t wait as it means a whole world of new sniffs!

Both mum and dad have been a bit worried lately by all the news of dogs getting stolen, mum is extra vigilant when she walks us and we don’t have our names on our tags just her telephone number and email; apparently there are even nasty people pretending to be from the RSPCA trying to take people’s dogs. we have our microchips and the details are up to date, dad has also installed cameras outside the house and bought new locks for the gates; we are NEVER left unattended in the garden anyway nor tied up outside shops. I would hate to be stolen by nasty people, and I wouldn’t let anyone steal Mav either – even though I think he is the biggest idiot ever I would still miss him. Mum says if she sees anyone acting suspiciously she will call the police as they are taking it really seriously.

Hopefully the sun will poke his head out soon and we can get out and enjoy our local countryside even more this spring – stay safe everyone, Billy.

Tools of the trade

T

he right tools make gardening easier, and in my opinion you should buy the best you can afford then look after them so they will last many years. But which tools are essential?

Gloves. Gardening is hard on the hands.

Weeds, roots and digging are brutal on the skin.

Buy a thick, good quality multi-purpose pair to begin with. Make sure they fit. My first pair were too large and cumbersome. I was so naïve I didn’t realise they came in different sizes… much like gardens…and gardeners!

Secateurs. The task of pruning comes around with alarming regularity, so a good pair of secateurs is one of the most used items in my garden tool kit. Find a pair that feel good to hold, are wellbalanced and easy to operate with one hand. Keep them clean and sharp and they will serve you well for many seasons.

Trowel. Useful for hand weeding, dividing smaller plants, planting, potting on, and seed sowing.

Hand Fork. A hand fork is essential for breaking up compacted soil. Sometimes it’s easier to use than a trowel and is less likely to damage roots in more densely planted areas or when separating smaller plants.

I like a comfort handle for my hand tools but make sure to choose tools where the shaft of the handle and trowel (or fork) are one unit, not welded or rivetted together, as they are not as strong and snap with repeated use. I choose stainless-steel tools because they are rust resistant.

Watering can. A large watering can is great, but very heavy when full so if you have arthritis or not much upper body strength choose a smaller watering can that you can handle easily and make a few more trips to the tap. A rose allows for a gentle sprinkler effect on tiny seeds and seedlings. You can use a hose if you garden a larger area. Choose a multitasking one with misting and sprinkler attachments Spade. You can’t dig large areas without one. As with hand tools, I prefer stainlesssteel. Keep it clean, with a sharp edge for digging, planting, and edging beds.

Choose one that feels right for your height.

Fork. A stainless-steel fork is great for stony soil, and for breaking up compacted earth.

It’s also good for lifting shrubs without damaging the root system too much.

Dutch hoe. Weeding is a necessary task (and a somewhat relentless one during the growing season). The Dutch hoe has a shallow angled blade with a front cutting edge for keeping weeds down between seedlings and established shrubs and plants.

Ground rake. Use this for breaking down the soil to that fine tilth gardening books go on about. Use the wide head and teeth to open and level the top surface of the soil, then use the back of the rake to firm it down. It makes seedsowing easier and more likely to produce healthy seedlings.

illingshurst & District Lions provide financial and practical support to ten Primary and PreSchools in Barns Green, Billingshurst, Loxwood, Plaistow & Kirdford, Rudgwick, Shipley CE, Slinfold CE, St Mary’s (aided) C of E, in Pulborough, William Penn, in Coolham and Wisborough Green. Typical examples include: ROAR is an annual education programme, supported and funded

by Lions and run by 7 Billion Ideas, an award winning education company. Pupils aged 7-11 are challenged to imagine ideas they believe could improve the world.

The winning group selected by each class then make a presentation to the whole school with an explanation, model, jingle and poster. Pupils then vote an overall winner going forward to a final, later in the year.

Poster for Peace is a Lions regional art competition for children aged 8, 9 and 10 with prizes.

Book Giveaways is held every two years, each child in all the schools receive a free book of their choice.

Lions Lifeskills are teacher packs available to all schools, providing lesson plans in supporting personal, social, health, and citizen education.

Support outside main curriculum includes funding for books, music tuition, instruments, Forest schools, outdoor learning, out of school experiences and

outdoor equipment.

Practical support has included planting 100 trees at Loxwood, repairing a greenhouse and timber gazebo at Wisborough Green, laying new lawns at Barns Green, book sales at Billingshurst summer fete, supplying and erecting gated fencing for a secure outdoor classroom at Shipley, ground levelling at St Mary’s, clearing planters for pupils to replant at Rudgwick and pruning trees and erecting a fence for Plaistow and Kirdford.

Kevin Ridgeway, our Projects Committee Chairman, says, “It’s more important than ever before that we provide additional support to schools in broadening children’s experiences for the future.”

Schools Helping the Lions – clothes collections. The Lions help support orphanages and schools in Gomel, Belarus, one of the poorest countries in Europe. Schools and parents kindly support us by collecting donated children's clothes, which are then sent to Belarus.

Canal volunteers keep up the good work

W

ey & Arun Canal Trust volunteers clocked up an impressive 21,807 hours of work in 2020, despite the limitations of lockdown.

The figure was just 5,614 down on the previous year, showing the dedication from working party members, boat crew and back office volunteers to the Trust and its aims.

Working parties were stood down during the spring lockdown and again at the end of the year, and the Trust also missed the visiting working party camps it benefited from in 2019 when three week-long camps were held, along with numerous weekend visits.

When regular working parties were able to resume, teams were kept to small groups to manage the restrictions, but several working parties increased the number of days they operated. The EWG, which usually operates on a Thursday, began working across five days a week with reduced numbers to make up for lost time on the Harsfold Bridge project at Wisborough Green.

Despite winter storms, flooding and the pandemic hampering construction, the team managed to complete the project on time in the late summer as a result.

Volunteers were also able to work across several days at the latest major project, the Tickner’s Heath road crossing at Alfold, Surrey.

Operating during the pandemic also created extra hours for the directors and back office volunteers, as

they worked on how to operate the Canal Centre, boat trips and working parties safely. Their efforts meant the Canal Centre operated and boat cruises were able to run from August through to the end of December, bringing in much needed funds.

Chairman Sally Schupke thanked all those involved in the Trust for their hard work in such difficult times. “The thousands of hours put in by our loyal volunteers is truly inspiring. Without them we wouldn’t be able to achieve the successes we continue to make.

The past year has been challenging for so many, and our volunteers have stepped up and carried on, and I thank them for that.”

Volunteers carry out many varied tasks for Trust, from outside physical jobs such as maintenance and restoration, to behind-the-scenes roles such as helping with admin, marketing and publicity, accounts and fundraising. Volunteers are also needed to help in the Canal Centre in Loxwood, and as cabin crew for the boat operation.

ost people spend many hours in their car each week, but none of us expects to have to live in it! But in the face of a major incident or in the event of a breakdown or bad weather, you could be forced to rely on your car for short-term shelter and survival. With a properly equipped car emergency kit, you could survive in your vehicle for days if necessary.

If you get into trouble and you are in your car, studies have shown that you are most likely to survive if you stay with your vehicle rather than venture out looking for help, especially if you are in a remote area. But if you do decide to leave your vehicle only do so if it’s safe to do so, the weather clears and you have proper protective clothing. In addition, make sure the vehicle is parked well off the road and leave a note indicating what has happened, where you have gone, and your health situation.

Lockdown – how it might affect your car With fewer journeys being made during lockdown you

might be forgiven in thinking your car will be as reliable as it was pre-pandemic. The simple fact is, cars like to be driven. An infrequently driven car is far more likely to let you down.

When putting your car back into regular use after months of inactivity it would be prudent to give it a service or at least a thorough checkover.

While standing unused in lockdown, doing the following will also be beneficial to the car’s health: Push or drive the car back and forth a few feet to a new parking position every week to avoid flat spots developing on the tyres. Driving a car with flat spotted tyres can be unnerving at best, dangerous at worst. And remember to check tyre pressures every few weeks.

Start the car every couple of weeks and drive it a couple of car lengths to ensure the clutch doesn’t stick to the flywheel – particularly important in damp weather.

Similarly the brakes can stick on if the handbrake is left applied for weeks on end. Consider chocking the wheels with bricks instead – but only if on level ground and safe to do so – you might also leave it in gear.

Look after the battery either by running the engine or trickle-charging the battery every couple of weeks.

And, at the end of lockdown, be sure to check all fluids before driving your car. Leaks have a habit of developing when not in use.

What a year!

John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

For those who continue to serve in the NHS, or as workers in the public services, we can never thank them enough. Also the whole raft of men and women who still work daily among us in shops, on transport, and delivering the goods and food that allows us oldies to stay in the safety of our homes.

Households across Horsham District will soon be asked to take part in Census 2021

T

he census is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It has been carried out every decade since 1801, with the exception of 1941.

This year it will be the first census to be run predominantly online, with households receiving a letter with a unique access code, allowing them to complete the questionnaire on their computers, phones or tablets. Additionally, there will be an initial census postcard delivered to every household from around 22nd February, which will flag up the upcoming Census.

Census day will officially be on Sunday 21st March, but there will be an extensive window in which to complete the survey for households both locally and across the country, who will receive letters with online codes allowing them to take part from early March up to the beginning of May. The census will include questions about your sex, age, work, health, education, household size and ethnicity.

And, for the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and

gender identity.

Results will be available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, to be kept safe for future generations.

The Office for National Statistics aim to make things as easy as possible for everyone, but if you need help taking part in the census, there’s a wide range of support services available. You can request support for yourself, or someone else, including: • Guidance and help in many languages and formats • A paper version of the questionnaire, if you prefer • Accessible census guidance, for example, in braille.
